La Fuente Restaurant Review - Highland Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"La Fuente is the kind of old-school Mexican restaurant that cures your soul as soon as you walk through the door. The place is miniature, but between the boisterous waitstaff and the plates of food larger than your torso, you feel right at home immediately. Don’t come looking for modern takes on the tamale here. This is your cheese and sauce-doused enchilada combo paradise, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Order the El Rey burrito and have enough food for three separate meals." - Brant Cox

Went on a Friday night. Seated quickly, but service wasn’t great. Server had too many tables and disappeared for long stretches. Took a while to get drinks and refills. Food was solid. Fajitas were generous and came out hot. Chimichanga was fine. Two Diet Cokes ended up at $12—charged for refills, which felt excessive. Also charged extra for sour cream and cheese. Bar was loud. A group of eight made conversation almost impossible for a while—acoustics are rough. Better once they sat down, but still noisy. Patio looks big and nice but ate inside. More personality than Don Julio’s or a chain, though it doesn’t feel fully authentic. The building has character. Decent spot if you’re not in a hurry and don’t mind the noise.

While I would not recommend the patio on a windy day, I always recommend the food and certainly the ambiance. Great staff that is just a pleasure to work with. While I miss my seafood enchiladas, the chicken ones were spectacular. Consistently good for years and I will always come back.

Google
Bad and expensive, that is a $7.5 steak (asada) taco. The meat is dry and over cooked. Probably prepare in advance and then reheat or kept warm during the day. Anyway, this place is more like a wanna be Mexican place with high prices targeting Americans. I’m from Mexico and been in several Mexican, Tex-Mex, Cal-Mex restaurants in Milwaukee and sadly this one is one to avoid. Rice was also bad, little dry and not best texture we order enchiladas de mole and not the best. The only good thing about this place was the service specifically Berenice.

Google
Horribly nasty, thrown together slop! Spent $40 on two meals we could not eat. They should be ashamed. They didn't toast the empty ass burrito. All I got was a mouth full of ungrilled dough. They don't ever have to worry about getting my business ever again.

Google
This place has such a colourful fun vibe, with great Latino music playing and so much detail in all of the decorations. The staff were friendly, attentive and quick to serve. The food came out at an incredible pace… so let them know if you need it to go a bit slower. The food was tasty and portion size good… especially the guacamole bowls which were HUGE. After dinner join the dance floor for a great night out.

We went on a Saturday afternoon, and we definitely went at the perfect time. We had a very sweet waitress who was new. She did an excellent job. The food was amazing. The chips and salsa was outstanding. We also had the chimichanga and a soft taco with beans, rice and guacamole. We also had a combination plate that included a chimichanga and enchiladas with rice and beans. We also had a strawberry margarita and a gold margarita. Everything was wonderful and delicious. The only thing is that it looks like they automatically put all the Black people in the back. I hope I’m wrong; however, I doubt it. Do better La Fuentes . . . We are watching! I would hate to be right, but I’ll pay closer attention the next time I go.

Google
Ordered a spicy steak dish. When it came out, it was not spicy at all, even to my wife's sensitive palette. I asked them to remake it spicy, even after one of the waiters confirmed visually that I did not get a spicy dish. The other waitress mentioned how the owner would have to charge me extra to make it again. Eventually got the spicy dish, which only tasted like it had Valentina hot sauce drenched in it.

Google
Good spot for quick food. Comfortable patio. Nice servers. Prices are okay, depending on the item, though they have gone up quite a bit recently. Portions are decent.

Yelp
La Fuente is a super cute spot, I loved the decor & all of the bright colors. The folks who helped us were also excellent, they were friendly & fast! I ordered the Tacos de Pescado, which come with a side of rice & beans. Everything was tasty, if not a bit too salty. I did really appreciate the slaw on the tacos, since it helped balance out the saltiness. I also had the house margarita, which was served in a cute cactus glass & was very good! In all, I would absolutely come back here; it's exactly what I look for in an American Mexican restaurant :)

Yelp
We love La Fuente, excellent margaritas great service good food.... Great service. Yum yum yum

Yelp
This place is not what I used to be. There was only one other car in the parking lot and now I see why. There was about 1 tablespoon of meat in the chimichanga and the enchilada. The chips are a tiny basket as well as a tiny cup of salsa. After that they charge you service friendly but very slow...too because location is great. But that's not enough to get me to go back $15 for a stuffed pepper? No thanks.

Yelp
Always like this place its clean, service is great always plenty of elbow space, The food is tasty, Margherita's are good. I've had alot of different dishes here, all have been good

Yelp
Ambience. Nasty tile floor. Tables have this blue vinyl cover that is sticky and gross No free refills. A 4oz cup of salsa free with one basket of chips for four people. Then it's $4.10 for more each refill with the 4oz cup They changed their chips and salsa. No flavor on either - used to be amazing Came here to sit outside on a Saturday - the patio is closed for power washing lol. On maybe their busiest day ? Odd Tostada was wet and gross. Not impressed with this place at all. Never will we be back. We just paid $95 for four crappy lunches - chips and salsa and four drinks - next time we will go to Taco Bell - better food I hate to say Do yourself a favor - just dont come here. I'm serious.

Yelp
0/10 experience. This used to be one of the more acceptable and affordable places to get quality Mexican food in Milwaukee. Overpriced, bad food is what they serve now. There were fruit flies everywhere and what appeared to be melted plastic in a taco we were served. Overall not worth your time or money.

Yelp
Honestly surprised that La Fuente doesn't have a higher Yelp rating... hands down some of the best service I've had at a restaurant establishment. Everyone is so kind and prompt and seems to really care about the experience you are having. The food is also wonderful and yummy, as well as the drinks! Overall a great spot to grab Mexican food with family and friends in the area!!

Yelp
This place, as in the physical location, brings back so many memories of my college days... when it was El Matador and Carey's... so when it initially evolved into La Fuente, I was not a fan simply because of the change. Now, many years have passed and I just recently revisited. While I long for the simplicity of the early/mid 00's, I decided that La Fuente is a-okay in my book! We came on a Friday, early evening and it wasn't too busy. Most people were seated on the nice patio. Each table has a big umbrella to provide some shade from the summer sun. We were seated within a minute or two of our arrival. We were served chips and salsa almost immediately after being seated. I liked the salsa! It wasn't anything exceptional but I prefer the more blended salsa over chunky. Chips were decent, again not like "woah!" but decent, standard tortilla chip. We ordered a pitcher or house margaritas on the rocks and it came out quickly. It was so good on this warm, but not too hot, summer day. I decided to order something totally different than the standard burrito or enchilada... the Plate Lunch with chunky beef (mechata, I believe). It was served with rice, beans, the typical garnish (lettuce, tomatoes), and flour tortillas. Basically, build your own taco or mix it together for a tortilla-less taco. This was a good decision, the beef was so good! And it was a large portion - I would definitely order this again. My husband ordered the Papi Poppers, which are a spin on Jalapeño Poppers - deep fried jalapeño halves with chicken, avocado, and cheese. Muy bein! There were so many, he had it as a meal. I tried one and it was delicious - a little zip but not too much. Like a 1.5 out of 5. My friend ordered a chicken quesadilla, which came with guacamole and sour cream. She said it was amazing! Service was fantastic - our server introduced himself right away and checked on us several times. He made sure our chips and salsa was refilled and even gave me a "doggy bag" to take home the chips we did not eat for my pup ;) (I said they were for Roxy lol). We did take some leftover home, but not much as we were "grazing" for a period of time. They did get busier but did not rush us out - it was fantastic as it was my husband and my 4 yr anniversary, so it was like a fun little party. Parking can be a bit stressful as the lot is small. There is parking down the street and across Bluemound (at your own risk during rush hour). Overall, great service, great food, good times!! :D

Yelp
This is my go to Mexican place in the Brookfield / Wauwatosa area. We always get great service. We like to sit on the patio. It has a romantic feel. In the winter sit inside by the fireplace !! The tacos Al pastor are delicious with pineapples. I got a jalapeño margarita which isn't on the menu but they will make it fit you. No complaints

Beth C.

Yelp
I was disappointed. The dish that I always get, was smaller and it was noticable right away. Smaller beans & rice and the nice little salad you get. One basket of chips, and salsa...then after that it's an upcharge. I jwas disappointed because I pay the same, just for less now.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for ever but the 2.5 stars have kept me away until today when I said let's see if it's reality 2.5 stars and it definitely is. The place is huge with a downstairs and rooms all over including a bar room. I sat in the dining room across from the fireplace and I was promptly given chips and salsa with the menu but no napkin, salsa is messy come on. I ordered a strawberry margarita blended to start which was ok and average. The chips were fresh and warm but not seasoned at all while the salsa had a little kick to it but it was like a purée with no chunks of vegetables. I ordered the #3 combination plate which is a tostada, burrito and enchilada with choice of meat that comes with rice and beans. The rice and beans were not seasoned and bland so I mixed them together with the salsa which made them better. The pork burrito looked like a taco and was a flour tortilla with cheese and tender white pork chunks, not red al pastor and not seasoned. The ground beef enchilada was a corn tortilla covered in cheese with no sauce on top like most places and not seasoned again. The chunky beef tostada had the tastier meat with tender chunks of beef but not seasoned again. The chunky beef tostada was the best part of the plate and it was average. Overall if your looking for bland Americanized Mexican food that grandma can eat then you found the right place, all the older people eating should be a dead give away. It's very average and not seasoned or flavorful and can't hold a candle to National or Lincoln area Mexican restaurants at all.

Yelp
Service was nice, the food was just ok. The building is old and you can tell by the outdated look inside. No horchata or any other Agua frescas. Which is like a sin for a Mexican restaurant lol. Owners definitely seem like cheapskates, no free soda refills and only one complimentary chip basket with a tiny cup of salsa? No thanks. It gives off the place is in financial trouble. Won't go here again. There are other decent Mexican restaurants around the area.

Yelp
Worst Mexican restaurant ever. Went there for dinner on 5-31-24. Group of six. Waiter didn't understand us, advised chips and salsa come with a fee. Worst part ever was I had to ask for a refill on my Diet Coke. He then stated no free refills. It's no wonder why this is only 2.5 stars. Never ever will we be back.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is horrible. Extremely overpaid for low Quality service and we paid over $7.50 per taco.. do not go here.

Debra P.

Yelp
Very racist establishment, I was called a britches and hung up on when I tried to phone in an oder on Friday evening 6_10/24 This is the time they have been extremely rude Customer service is awful Will never patronize them again, they should a sign up that says we don't like black people a d stop with the unnecessary bullshit

Yelp
My favorite Mexican restaurant in town! Tons of seating, fabulous service, great outdoor patio! I love the salsa and lime margaritas. I request fajita veggies in enchiladas to enjoy a vegetarian option. This is my go to Bday spot!

Jesse R.

Yelp
This place changed their menu The Timmy Tonga's are very small now unless you order a big one in charge you 20 bucks for the plate visit this place

Erin H.

Yelp
The place has gone downhill. Food was bland, basic, and way too much up-charging. My chicken enchilada tasted old, like refrigerator. Ate only one bite. Menu stated no send backs, so I did not say anything. Margaritas were so sour and chemically tasting. Never ever going back.

Clarisse A.

Yelp
Worst food ever!!! I ordered a mini combo with an enchilada and chimichanga. I was told to make it shrimp it was an up charge of $3 per item. I ordered the chimichanga with shrimp, when it came I opened it up and I had 3/4 a shrimp in the chimichanga. I spoke to the waiter and requested the manager. The manager refused to come out and offered me two more shrimp. The cheese enchilada didn't really have enchilada sauce. And the Shrimp soup was sweet!!! Definitely not worth the money spent and they don't have rainbow margaritas

Heidi S.

Yelp
We were patrons for years but tonights experience very disappointing to say the least Ordered chicken quesadilla small and it was 2 small pieces for 8.95, ordered chicken fajitas, had to ask for dinner plates, also was supposed to come with sour cream, lettuce, cheese, beans and rice that never came along with the meal, had to ask and they only brought a small snack plate containing beans and rice and acted upset that we asked We won't be back unfortunately

Kate M.

Yelp
The food was so so and expensive. The service was truly terrible. We usually tip well and are very understanding of service providers, but it was really bad. There were plenty of workers around as well so we were confused as to why it was so slow. We weren't offered drinks for a very long time. We won't be back.
google avatar

Madeline O.

Yelp
Yeah this place is mid.... Said the outside was closed but then sat someone outside when we were sat??? BFFR Margaritas are bussin' and it's cold in here Bruhhh I gave it 3 stars but literally changed it to 1 MIDDDDD ASFFFFFF
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
Food was ok at best. Low portion sizes not much variety and extremely over priced. Plus after the first basket of chips it's $4.10. Seriously it's gotten worse over the years but this is definitely the last time we will come in. I would have gotten better food service and all better price from any of the food trucks around. Their margaritas were so over priced I didn't even get one on the mere fact that they were super small and it just all made me lose my appetite on how they charge. We should have left. This restaurant is not worth going to. My opinion but it angered me enough to write this review.
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
I've had several great meals here. My last visit was no exception. Great warm chips and good salsa. I always ask for some hotter stuff to add to their nice tasting salsa. I understand they can't serve hot stuff to mid westerners with "delicate" mouths. I had an enchilada combo, my partner had tacos. Both were delicious. Reason for the 4 star and not 5 is the picture in front of me was not "flavor enhancing"! Don't get me wrong, I really like the décor of the restaurant, but this one picture was not pleasant (for me). I'm probably too sensitive but dang... Definitely will return. But if I get seated near this picture I will ask for another table :)

Victoria F.

Yelp
Food was good. However, no one told us that they wouldn't give us our correct change back. So, we ended up getting shorted. So just an FYI to anyone paying in cash, do not expect to get your correct change back.

June V.

Yelp
LaFuente on Bluemound. Terrible. Didn't eat anything we got. Arrived cold, no sour cream, silverware or guacamole or tortillas. By time got, everything was getting worse . No offer from waitress to warm things up or if we wanted a drink? We left, paid (Ididn't want to pay) told manager and she said "if you don't want to come back don't"

Yelp
La Fuente is doing a great job burning their brand to the ground. We have been frequenting La Fuente since they were located just off 5th and National for over 20 years but man have they gone down hill. The location on Bluemound is no where near the size of comfort of the old location. The phone number and hours listed on goolge are incorrect as we went a few weeks ago at 8:30 on a Tuesday and were told the kitchen was closed, also tried to call number to place to go order and number was disconnected. Weve returned a few times since and had poor experiences both times prompting me to write this review. The most recent visit we had a party of 3 arrive on a quiet Thursday evening and 2 of the party of of 3 were told the entire party had to arrive before being seated. I told the hostess my wife was parking the car and would be in shortly and asked if we could be seated as we had my elderly grandparent with us that had trouble standing/walking but nope policy is policy at La Fuente so dont expect to be seated unless your entire party is present (even if the place is empty). The food was sub par compared to past dining experiences. The thing we noticed the most though was the price changes and add ons for everything. We ordered 3 foutain sodas, a full order of chicken fajita and a chicken quesadilla and the bill was over $55. We ran out of chips at the table and we were told there would be an extra charge for more chips, when we asked for a refill on our $3 foutain drink we were told refills would cost $2 per, when we asked for an additional sour cream with the fajitas we were told additional cost as well. I completely understand that the cost of food, packaging etc have all gone up in price but these extras were never charged for in the past and after seeing what we were charged for what we got it certainly seemed these costs should have been baked into the menu prices. As much as we hate to do it La Fuente is off our favorites list which is a bummer as we have been visiting monthly for the last 20 years. Maybe the changes are new management or something but whomever is responsible for these changes should rethink your approach for the sake of your brand.

Yelp
It's sad to see a restaurant that used to be so much better go so down hill. I ordered the shrimp soup and fish tacos. After they moved out party from one set of tables to another because two people did not show up, we got to sit next to the garbage. But then the food shows up, my soup was like warm at best, asked for it to be warmed up, apparently it's not realized there that nuked shrimp become hard and rubbery. Also the fish taco after I moved the mountain of lettuce there were 2 tiny Luke warm strips at the bottom. Service was the only redeeming feature. Will never need to go back there again.
google avatar

Patrice P.

Yelp
Ambiance was so so and I was a bit put off by the sign right when you walk in that one one basket of chips complementary and they charge for any additional baskets . Not so much so for the cost, but that that's the first thing you read when you walk in. Not very welcoming. Our server was very polite and attentive. Drinks were watered down and so so but the food was surprisingly delicious. Not sure I'll be back but if you're looking for solid traditional Mexican, this is your place.
google avatar

L B.

Yelp
The food is good. But now they charge you $4.75 for a 2nd baskets of chips and salsa. That's ridiculous. Won't go back.
google avatar

Casey L.

Yelp
Used to be my go to place for dinner. The last month it has been awful. Something has changed - the chicken used to be the BEST. The salsa used to be amazing. Now it's mediocre. Also their website says open Mondays and tuesdays and the last few times I have driven by hoping to go it has been closed. Update your damn hours it's so irritating. Will find another Mexican restaurant to visit
google avatar

Norman B.

Yelp
Love the food and chips. Service is great. No idea why given it's July we can eat on the patio outside for two days in a row. Given it's early July and weather is great and the patio looks so nice

Annie W.

Yelp
I live right down the street so I've been to La Fuente a hand full of times. Im giving the review 2 stars only for the fact that the food is good. The customer service has been poor more often than not and is a big reason we won't return anymore (tables have been worse than the bar). Also, the price is way too high for almost everything. A good example is the cheese that comes with the fajitas. It's a tiny amount, so I asked for another tiny thing of it. I was shocked when the bartender went to ring in for such a tiny amount of shredded cheese (nothing special). THEN, proceeded to see $3 on the bill! I obviously said something about it, he said they get a lot of complaints about it and that it's ridiculous, and proceeded to do nothing about it. Sad that we live so close and will not be returning due to overly priced and subpar customer service :(

Stephanie E.

Yelp
If I could give them a zero stars I definitely would. I ordered a big tray of fajitas with shrimp and it seemed as if they counted 1 shrimp for each person, there was like 10 pieces of shrimp in the big tray, and to add to that there was also hair inside of the food. Definitely not worth the price or even a penny at that. Worst experience I've had, definitely do not recommend and will not be back!

Nadia H.

Yelp
Got tricked into $30 for 4 a la cart steak tacos. When I called and asked why they said it was $3 extra a taco for steak which is weird cause it doesn't say anything like that on the menu
google avatar

Marcie A.

Yelp
first of all i would like to. apologize for no pics. the food came out so very quick and steaming hot that i ate it all up i had the mini combo, which consisted of one large tortilla, beans, lettuce. tomato, and 3 kinds of cheese and a small chimichanga. choice of meat, beef, chicken, pork and for $2.50 extra you can get steak (i chose the pork), my husband ordered the enchiladas tomatillo (green sauce) then beans and rice on the side of each dish. the bowl of chips and salsa they sent out as apps were great. served warm, they were light and crispy and noy greasy at all . as usual we shared a half-pitcher of mango margaritas. price for the whole meal $47.00

Sydney L.

Yelp
Absolutely love this restaurant. My friends and I have been going here for years. The food is always delicious and the margaritas are amazing! The restaurant is large so even when it's busy the service is fast.
google avatar

Lynn H.

Yelp
Recently had an order for pick up. I chose 3 enchiladas with beans and rice. I opened it up to find a plate of mush. I love a lot of sauce, but it covered everything! I had to excavate to uncover the enchiladas and then they were small and tasteless. It was as if everything was put into a dish and just stirred around...which I'm sure it wasn't, but the appearance and taste were awful. No distinction between the three items. It was a plate of mush covered in enchilada sauce. Made me remember why I hadn't gone there for a couple of years! Definitely won't be returning anytime soon!

Tyler D.

Yelp
Poor management, we had to ask for our chips and water while the tables where white people sat got there service even when we were there well before them. The manager didn't apologize and we left before even getting food. Will NOT be returning.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican. The only Mexican I pay for. Possibly the last of the great Milwaukee authentic places. Great service 90% of the time. I demand to eat next to the beautiful fountain in the back dining room. Best salsa i've ever had.

Selena G.

Yelp
Bad service (Leonarda) was super RUDE She did not want to accommodate me after being sat inside and given our food my baby got fussy (crying) She never checked on us so I asked a male waiter if I could move outside and he said yes , so I did She came outside and said we were not able to move outside even after explaining my baby was crying .
google avatar

Joey M.

Yelp
I'm a native Chicagoan. And I appreciated the vibe of this Tosa spot. You go here for the energy and you know what to expect here Warmed chips. Lots of melted cheese on everything possible. And unlimited refills of fountain coke-which I prefer to drink with Mexican food. Great service. Our server/bartender moved with precise efficiency. Reasonable prices. Family friendly. I saw a large family Celebrating an special occasion. Also a date spot. I will be back!
google avatar

Alyssa F.

Yelp
So far, this place has served up the most authentic Mexican food I have had in Milwaukee / the local area. The refried beans are delicious and comes with most of the dishes on the menu, as a side with rice. There wasn't a single vegetarian item listed on the menu. I asked for vegetarian enchiladas with vegetables (not cheese). They had no problem serving up enchiladas with the grilled veggies they serve with their fajitas. Complimentary chips and salsa were provided once we were seated. The salsa had a kick and the bussers had no problem bringing multiple salsa refills to our table when we asked. [Thank you!] The wait staff is incredibly kind and accommodating. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. Very good customer service. The hostess told us the wait would be 35 mins when we arrived which bummed me out because there were many open tables, but it turns out that this establishment is still practicing social distancing. Tables are spaced out nicely and we waited no more than 10 mins. We just grabbed a chair at the bar and ordered a drink while waiting. There were TVs on at the bar space & chairs were grouped and spread out at the bar as well. The parking lot was on the smaller side, but we managed to find a spot easily. The inside of the place also has that traditional Mexican flare/décor throughout the space.

Yelp
Made an impromptu stop on a Sunday. We haven't been to this location before. The downtown location was our preference. We were seated, received delicious chips and salsa. We ordered margaritas. We forgot how good their margaritas were! I had a combo with a small burrito, tostada and enchilada. My husband had the wet burrito which was also amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Was just here again before my flight on june 15th. Had the fish tacos and they were perfect! I can never find good Mexican anymore but this place was awesome! Highly recommend

Yelp
Stopped by for some classic Mexican food. Chips were good and warm, but salsa was a bit too much cilantro for me. We got the combination plate, Mexican pizza, and the tortilla soup. I'd recommend the Mexican pizza, it was delicious. Wasn't a huge fan of the tortilla soup but my friend seemed to like the chimichanga/enchilada combo. I do with the Mexican pizza had sauce on it, it was just missing something small.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Amazing. I had the combination plate which had an enchilada, taco and chimichanga. The enchilada I had with Chicken and the other 2 items with steak. Their chicken with the enchilada was ok but what was amazing was the steak they had. It was very well seasoned and made both the taco and chimichanga phenomenal. It was so good I ordered a 3 steak taco plate to go. All the plates typically come with rice and beans but for steak they do charge extra. If you also eat inside the restaurant you get plenty of chips and salsa. The waiter was very friendly and the overall atmosphere seemed very welcoming. I will be back to try something else with their steak for sure. That's something I just cannot have now that I've tried. I haven't been to many taco places in Milwaukee but so far this might be up there in my top steak taco places. Keep up the great work La Fuente!

Yelp
On January 2, 2022... we came into the restaurant as a party of four... we ate guacamole, had food and margaritas... 3 out of the 4 of us got sick... we puke and had diarrhea and headaches.... we believe something was wrong with the guacamole or the tequila was old... we will not be coming back....
