Best Detroit Restaurant Tamales | Eater Detroit

"People flock to the family-owned La Gloria Bakery on Bagley for its variety of conchas, churros, cookies, and other Mexican sweets, but also because of its tamales. The narrow tamales here are available with pork, chicken, and cheese and jalapeno, and during the holidays also come with bean and cheese. Like any bakery, items here are made fresh daily so don’t wait until late in the day to pick up a bag, which are available by the dozen." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Great little bakery. Everything tastes so good. We used to go to the mexican town bakery but the taste of the goods got worse and the prices went up. So we discovered la Gloria now we will drive from st clair shores just to go there.

Google
The ladies were so nice and friendly. Great prices! HUGE selection soooooo many beautiful cookies! My cookies tasted like clay but they were some festive colored cookie which I find even remember the flavor The turnover was AMAZING

Google
Absolutely delicious and very good prices in this old school bakery in Mexican town. The strawberry yo-yos and strawberry filled rolled cake with coconut were the best! Great prices and friendly service. The cookies and baked goods were really tasty as well! Will definitely return! Yummy!

Google
Awesome little Mexican bakery. Everything I've had from here was absolutely fantastic. Churros are perfect, empanadas are great, the jelly roll is yummy!

Yelp
Cool little Mexican bakery that literally had EVERYTHING. Happy we stopped in on our short visit to Mexican Town. Got some cookies, empanadas, and little cakes. Will be back

Yelp
La Gloria Bakery is our go-to bakery in Southwest Detroit for churros served warm! There is an array of Mexican baked goods you may grab with tongs and put on your tray while you mosey around the store looking at all the beautiful edible colors and shapes. La Gloria is located on Bagley & The Fisher Freeway service drive.

Yelp
Always a stop after a night in Detroit. I haven't tried anything I didn't like. Churros are delicious! Cases and cases of tasty treats. Take them down the street to the park and have a breakfast picnic.

Yelp
Two words. CHOCOLATE CANNOLI. The yelp Detroit page posted their cannolis on their instragrm page and I HAD to grab them. The shop is really small but they have a wide variety of fresh baked goods. The prices were reasonable, and you can grab an amazing picture of the bridge to Canada.

Yelp
Fun. Good cheap self service baked goods. Friendly staff I'm am Curious what kind of Grade the health department would give than place.

Yelp
I love their chicken tamales! We also get their coconut macaroons & churros.

Yelp
Great food and great service, cudos to Ms. Jaunita! I've been going here since 2013. I learned from a coworker that you unravel the corn shell off tamales, lol - don't eat the corn shell. Been in love ever since. Baked goodies are top notch! Open early!
google avatar

Yelp
I visited La Gloria with tamales in mind. I used to get these pretty regularly years ago, and remembered them as some of the best I've ever had. I'm happy to report that they were every bit as good as I remembered. You can choose chicken or pork filling, and they are sold in groups of 6 or 12. I got the pork, and the meat was delicious and flavorful. It's hard not to pick up a pastry or two when visiting, and I chose a caramel pastry and an apple turnover. Of the two, I absolutely loved the caramel pastry. It was a tender little pocket filled with dulce de leche. Mmm! I wouldn't get the apple turnover again, as I didn't care for the filling.

Yelp
I live on the West coast. I tried so many places but nothing compared to this store's Tres Leches! Every year, I visit Michigan, I drive 40 mins to get Tres Leches from here. It is amazing! They seem to have increased the price and size. The portions are huge now.
google avatar

Damien O.

Yelp
I like this place. The food is pretty good, but not outstanding. I usually get the apple or cherry turnover, a sprinkle cookie, and a bag of cinnamon sugar tortilla chips. The people who run this place are very sweet and helpful.

Yelp
I've been going to La Gloria for years now. It's a must-stop when you're in or near MexicanTown. Upon entering, your senses are overloaded with the smells and sights. Grab a tray, piece of paper and tongs (no hands!), and get ready for an experience. There are so many baked goods, yummy stuff (including my wife's favorite - choco flan) in the cooler, and don't forget churros if you're there on the weekend. They don't have the other flavors anymore, but cinnamon is great. There is also a selection of great tamales, both hot and chilled. And if your cholesterol is OK, they also have chicharonnes on the weekend that you buy by weight. Those are awesome, just don't get any two days before your next physical! Seriously, you have to stop in here!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
If you are in Mexicantown it is worth a gander for the wide assortment of baked goods. However, everytime we order something it is lacking in taste and texture. They do have a refrigerated dessert section, so that might be worth a try.

Yelp
I discovered this place while searching Yelp and I'm so glad we were able to stop in while we were visiting Detroit. The building is very easy to find, right in Mexicantown. When we walked in, we were told to take a tray and tongs and we could walk around to and pick out the items we wanted. A lot of the items were things ive never heard of/seen before, so I just tried a variety of items. We had a tray full of goodies and a bottle of water and everything only came to $11.50. You cannot beat these prices! I will definitely stop back in here the next time in Detroit. We want to try the tamales the next time we're in town! This place was so cute!!

Yelp
Every trip possible that I am in Detroit near Mexican Town, I stop by for these delicious treats! These cookies are always a hit with the family. My favorite is the pink heart shaped one. La Gloria Bakery never disappoints me. I have been going there for as long as I can remember. Evie's Tamales on the same block would provide these cookies for dessert when we were there and is how we found this lovely family owned establishment! The best part of La Gloria's to me is being able to walk around the bakery, opening the cases and using the tongs to pick out my own cookies and treats, then carrying a tray of delightful smelling favorites up to the counter to be boxed up. It is fun to bring the family in and have them peaking into the windows of the cases to pick out their own sweets. This trip, I also bought their chicken tamales to try. The chicken tamales were really moist and tasty. I highly recommend trying them. I will definitely be getting them again!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Come in and be overwhelmed by sweet Mexican delights! We purchased a glazed lemon turnover, a glazed cherry turnover, a caramel turnover dusted with sugar and lastly a warm churro. My wife had to eat half the churro before we got to the counter. They were all excellent and we enjoyed them for a couple days, still tasting fresh and delicious. But be ready to be tempted with last minute purchases. As we turned to corner to pay there were bundled bags a tamales! The prose is wonderful and are already planning our return! Ps this was our first time here.

Yelp
Pork tamales were fresh ,hot and delicious I think I found my new tamales spot . The salsa that came with it was delicious as well . I also decided to treat myself to a canoli while there and my god was it amazing .....highly recommend you try this place it's the little pink bakery in mexicantown try it out

Yelp
Awesome food and service. They have a wide variety of fruit-filled turnovers and donuts, churros, and many types of cookies. The service is fantastic; the cashiers were extremely kind, helpful, and understanding. Would totally recommend!
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Ok, this place is as old as me but there food is consistently good and reasonably priced! We been there twice before before I gave them this outstanding evaluation! Their tamales are $13/dozen with complimentary salsa. Generous portions, homemade and very meaty. Heck, I though I died and went to Mexico. Homemade tortillas are absolutely delicious! In fact so good i kept looking for my mom. They have quite an assortment of Mexican pastries but we didn't try any with my covid waist and all! Covid practices in place. We drove 25 minutes from Livonia to support Mexican town restaurants and now carryouts. All I can say is "OLE".
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
La Gloria is definitely more "mom and pop" type store compared to Mexicantown Bakery, but that's part of the charm. You walk in and grab a tray, and some tongs, and grab baked goods and add them to your tray and then check out at the end of the circular aisle. The baked goods are great Mexican baked good, and are also super inexpensive. A MUST for anyone looking to have some thing sweet. Some of their baked good are tailored to the Mexican pallet and others to the American pallet, so don't be surprised if there's a bit of variety between the items.

Yelp
Never disappointed Always multiple bags or boxes Great food at great prices Friendly staff too

Yelp
The pumpkin empanadas are to die for. Just like my Granmother G used to make. Oh my gosh!
google avatar

Yelp
Best.Tortillas.EVER!! We buy 3-4 bags of them at a time. All their other baked goods we've gotten have been amazing as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Nothing beats grabbing a tray of pink cake some cookies 6 grapefruit Jarritos and a dozen or three of tamales

Yelp
I've been here a gazillion million trillion times to the 16th power. The only reason why I didn't wanna review it is because I wanted to keep it a best kept secret. Best place to keep an Authentic panaderia right in the middle of the Tourist sector of Mexican town. If you haven't visited this joint. Shame on you! There's always plenty of desert joints in Detroit, but the only one that can really hold a candle to Astoria is this spot right here. I don't care who you are or where you come from. This bakery will and can destroy all bakeries in Metro detroit. Things I regularly get here... top of my list would have to be the Tres Leche. Second would be their churros. Third would be the custard horn or the cannoli. They make seasonal things as well, I seen them slinging king cakes as well. Remember, these guys do some good tamales too. They sell em by the dozen. Service is good and direct. You pick your stuff, bring it to the counter, they wrap it up, bag it then you pay for it. Take it home or to a park and enjoy. The simple things in life is the best things. La Gloria is exactly just that.

Yelp
This used to be the place where my kids and I would go out of our way to get a special treat. It was a 30 minute destination excursion. A few months ago, pre covid we went and my son found mold on his MnM chocolate doughnut. We told the the guys who worked there. They saw them, picked off the MnM's on the doughnut and told us to grab something else. I thought nothing of it. Fast forward 4 months. We went today and the place is a dump. The attached picture is a a pic of my cream filled pastry. My son ran right for the MnM doughnuts and oddly enough, a chocolate doughnut with moldy MnM's picked off over to the side was hanging out on the shelf. Obviously there is no way this can be the same doughnut? We are talking 4 months. I know I sound like a total crazy person right now but something tells me this bakery is in some serious trouble.

Yelp
We walked in after lunch and found only 1 other family in the bakery at that time. We weren't greeted but could see someone behind the counter. We decided on a churro and chocolate flan. Only the plain churros were available. We attempted to make small talk with the guy behind the counter but he wasn't interested. We asked for spoons for our flan. He said "Sure." It was raining so we went to the car to enjoy our goodies. He only gave us 1 spoon, but OK we will deal with it. I want to start with the churro so that I can end on a positive note. The churro was hard and chewy. It had a taste of old fryer oil. There was very little sugar or cinnamon on it. It was plain awful, nothing else I can say about it. The chocolate flan on the other hand was amazing. The flan was creamy and delicate, and perfectly sweetened. The chocolate cake was moist and full of chocolate goodness. When you put the 2 together it is an amazing combination that I am craving already. It was a 45 minute drive for us and we had hoped for more. I've been there before and had a better experience. I will return if only for the chocolate flan.

Yelp
Lived in this area for 30 years. I was raised here. I get that this is the ONE bakery in the tourist "Mexican town" part of Detroit. But, how high are your standards?? This is the WORST bakery in Southwest Detroit. Sheila's bakery on Springwells, and Mexican Town Bakery on Vernor, are MUCH better options for just a short drive. The prices are the same but the quality is so much better. Can we talk about sanitation here? I try almost every year to buy something here, but its always covered in FLIES! Things aren't covered properly. They get stale quicker. Hence, the bread that is always stale! Sure, they've got some "neat" things for the gringos, but cute sugar skulls aren't going to make me eat fly cookies. They use be ok. But now it's just not even OK.
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
I was so excited when I walked into this place. There's quite the variety. I got a few different things to try- a couple pastries, a cookie, and a turnover. Everything tasted like it had sat around for quite some time- dry and bland. The cookie was the most edible but still very hard and stale. Sadly threw everything away after a couple bites.
google avatar

Matthew J.

Yelp
Very nice people in this southwest Detroit bakery. That being said, I've gone here on two separate occasions and both times the baked goods were stale. I'm not sure when they bake; but even late at night their shelves are stocked with baked products. I would hope they don't leave them out for days at a time ... but who knows?
google avatar

T. W.

Yelp
Have been going to this place sporadically over 40 years. Never improved. Simply put, ALL of their baked goods SUCK!! And for goodness sake DO NOT PURCHASE TAMALES from them they lack in flavor, are very dry and the content and size is miniscule. TAMALES totally SUCK!!! Why stay away? Hum Let me count the ways... Days old pastries/cookies/sweet breads, No quality ingredients, Sanitation is questionable--you decide if you go. Always felt a need to support small businesses but this is ridiculous. They put forth zero effort to please the customer's palate. La Gloria is a full MEH to FAIL.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
This bakery is phenomenal! They have a grand variety of baked goods and are baked fresh daily. Most of the treats here are no more than $2, so being broke isn't a problem here :p. It's an awesome spot to go to for dessert after a meal at one of the restaurants in Mexico town, so make sure to stop by! Ps: a fresh warm churro is $1, but they also have day old bag of churros (5?) that go for a $1 as well! They're located at the left of the entrance and are easy to miss, so keep your eyes open if you're into quantity over quality!
google avatar

Jenny P.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. They informed us where to get this candy today and we found them! The baked goods I was interested in was like $1 each. Which is a pretty good price for a bakery in my opinion. They had a wide varieties of goodies. Got to try the 3 milk cake for the first time! Delicious. I do wish it was more than mainly sweets. They do have their own chicharon though! Which I thought was fascinating. Can't wait to share my cookies!

Christopher J.

Yelp
Watch em. They'll overcharge you if you're not paying attention. Bought 3 dozen tamales and 2 pops, tried to charge me $70. Are you kidding me. Will never go back there. It's Evie's for now on. Bigger and better tasting.

Ed L.

Yelp
Tamales. Get a couple dozen and a box of pastries. Working class treats that hit the sweet spot of value and deliciousness. Stop in this week! You won't regret it.
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick minute after lunch at Los Galanes this weekend. I got three treats, including a strawberry tart of sorts, a huge cookie (two cookies stuck together with cream), and a caramel turnover. It's $5 minimum for credit card purchases, mine was $3.75 but he let me charge it which was nice. So far the cookie was amazing, and the caramel turnover was good too. I'll eat the tart tomorrow sometime. Good selection of cookies and baked goods.
google avatar

Jacob K.

Yelp
The eat me cookie tasted bad and after I putted dated milk on it it tasted better and the last thing, IT SUCKS !!!!!!!!
google avatar

Despina T.

Yelp
Freshly baked Mexican goodies all day every day! I always make it a point to stop at La Gloria every time I'm in Mexicantown. Everything related to Mexican baked goods can be found here...this includes pastries, bread, cookies, churros, flan...they also sell fresh tortilas and corn husks. My favorite item from here are the chocolate-filled churros. The cookies are awesome, they sell tons of sugar cookies with clever sayings on them, like "blah blah blah" or "bite me", or pretty much anything that's clever right now, like music lyrics. Upon walking in to La Gloria, you can grab tongs & a tray, and the entire bakery is self-served, so you can pick out Mexican baked goods to your liking. I can't ever get enough of La Gloria...the aroma of fresh baked bread keeps me hangin' around.
google avatar

Kanita A.

Yelp
I was afraid to try anything because nothing looked fresh. The pastries are all kept in these cabinets. Everything was made in bulk and left to sit. I decided to try the churros since they were in a hot box. I love churros so I got 5, a dollar each. I got to my car to try the churros and they were the worst churros I've ever had. Not only were they old they were bland, hard and greasy. Why display old pastries for people to buy? I left feeling so disappointed. I googled other bakeries in the area and found Shielas bakery which made me feel much better.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
A must visit! Awesome staff and super good baked goods. They have something for everyone, no matter how picky:)
google avatar

Real A.

Yelp
This has gotta be a sister-bakery to Sheila's Bakery in Pontiac - as I recognized a lot of the same offerings. Although not grabbing anything - everything looked super delicious and it was definitely busy for a Saturday morning.

Michelle W.

Yelp
Maybe I just don't understand Mexican baking, but I am certain they use the same dough for almost every single cookie, aside from the seashell or nut cookies. Between 3 adults and 3 kids we bought one or two of almost everything in the bakery, and all the cookies were the same cookie dough with different toppings. They weren't bad, but I wont make a special trip to stop here. And I certainly wont buy one of everything to try it all out next time! The pastries and cookies are not sweet like traditional american bakery items, so my kids were unimpressed but I liked the first couple I tried, and the cherry turnover. After one or two cookies, you realize it's all the same and pretty much lose interest. We threw out over half of what we bought. And if you're expecting items baked same day, don't. We were there just before closing time and everything was pretty much fully stocked for the next day or three.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This place is pretty good, though I prefer Sheilas. Mostly the same pastries you see in the Mexicantown bakeries. They didn't have regular tres leches though, only a fruit flavored one. It is right across from a good restaurant so I would stop in again if in the area.
google avatar

Deborah R.

Yelp
I can't even. I can't even go to Mexican town without walking through their door. I can't even leave here without an entitre tray of pastries. And I can't even go a few days without all of it being eaten. There is so much selection. This is the mexican version of an Astoria and I am all about it. Hands down, this is my main spot in Mexicantown. It offers everything you'd want in a food location: great service, consistency in great products, great atmosphere, a nice variety of selections. And as far as that goes, I am literally paralyzed by selection when I walk in the place. I try to get new things every time I come here and I always wonder how many times I will have to drop in in order to try everything once. This is a must for anyone going to Mexicantown and they are very inexpensive. It takes away at least some of the guilt of leaving with a heaping tray of their goodies.
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
I love the tray system! I also am a big fan of the tres leches cake and caramel turnovers. Give me anything caramelly and I am all over it. Mmmm. The hot churros were good as were the cookies. My husband basically filled most of our tray without consulting me. I let him though because in regards to sweets, his is the better palate (yes that is tough for me to admit). He also unfortunately ate most of what we got too. This place is unbelieveably cheap and my California transplant hubby who knows his Mexican pastries was happy. Everything seemed fresh and goodness cheap cheap cheap.
google avatar

Liz R.

Yelp
We saw 'Tamales' advertised on the building, and Ken wanted some to go... but I was not expecting what we found inside! Immediately upon entering, you're surrounded by shelf after shelf of Mexican pastries. Dozens of different kinds! You pick up a tray and tongs at the entrance and walk clockwise through the small place, choosing individual pieces, then head to the register to pay. Descriptions are a bit lacking, but choose based on if that specific pastry looks good to you or not. I bet it'll taste delicious no matter what. I went with a 6" round, lacey cookie that was made with the churro batter and dusted with cinnamon sugar, for about $1. Ken got a bag of still-warm chicken tamales. They also sell fresh tortillas and pre-made barbacoa (shredded beef) by the pound. La Gloria is now on my list of must do's any time we're in Mexicantown.
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
LOVE this place! What an amazing selection and at the prices there is no reason not to load up! Pick up a tray and chose exactly which pastry you want, nothing is more than $1! No idea what we were getting, we grabbed everything that looked good to us and everything was good! Amazing actually, so simple yet so tasty, an explosion of flavors, from hot churros, good creamy filled pastries, sugared, fruit filled, everything you heart desires! My favoriite the snowflake looking fried churro, so sweet crunchy and simple! Actually everything there is the best, I will stop here and seriously stock up on this stuff! We also got some fresh pork rinds, only knowing the ones out of the bag we were in for a suprise. These are served of course fried with the crispy side that we all know, but also with the layer of meat and the thickk skin layer! Way too porky and touch for our taste, that was pretty nasty actually, but that is the way they are supposed to be and if you are a real meat eater (though my husband is and he couldn't get himself to have more than a bite) the thick layer of pork might be tasty but the tough skin a real turn off. In all the perfect example of what mexican village in Detroit has to offer and my favorite part of the trip!
google avatar

Melody X.

Yelp
They have a wide variety of Mexican donuts and cookies. There's cute cookies with cute edible gel writings on them. Their sweets are shareable in size, other than their churros which are 1.99. About 2x the amount of a donut or cookie..I say a bit too pricey for its size. I wasn't too thrilled with anything there, but it's good to have a Mexican bakery around :)
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
I found the cookie assortments fascinating and thus I had to go and check it out. The big cookies with the messy scroll on them are mildly amusing. The churros looked good and I got the caramel one. My bf selected the apple turnover as his dessert. The churro was a nice chewy texture that I like about them, although I couldn't taste the caramel much, it was so subtle. I think it could have used a bit more caramel after taste and taste to it, but it was still not bad. My bf liked his apple turnover. The other cookies looked decent in the display but not that appealing to me. I would take my niece and nephew here to pick out a fun cookie and I know they would enjoy the sugar skulls, this look amazingly sweet.
