"La Gran Uruguaya Cafe, Jackson Heights by Diane Shaw. Uruguayans have a deep love for their baked goods, clear to see here at La Gran. In order to truly get how special this place is, you have to grab a seat and soak it in. Fútbol paraphernalia and yerba mate gourds of all shapes and sizes line the walls. Buzz of locals chatting while waiting in the ever-present line (no matter the time of day) fills the air along with the sweet, unmistakable smell of freshly baked pastries. The demand for their huge assortment of traditional Uruguayan desserts and bizcochos is so high, it's enough to keep two storefronts open and constantly bustling. La Nueva, their sister bakery, is just down the block and offers the same items. Snack on bizcochos salados (savory pastries), empanadas, sandwiches de miga (a perfect stack of crustless tea sandwiches) and dulce de leche-laden alfajores. Or go all out and order a postre chajá, an extreme creation of sponge cake and peaches covered in chards of merengue."

Great. Enjoyed it. Nice bartenders. Cocktails were a little pricey but worth it for the experience. Nice ambiance as well.

Been coming here since I was a kid. I absolutely love this place. I've been away from the city for years, and it's just as I remember it. The nostalgia is palpable. Thanks for making my trip back home a memorable one.

I went with my family for the second time to celebrate a couple of birthdays. At the beginning the service was excellent, they took care of us and after singing happy birthday they kept asking if we wanted more pitchers of sangria, we said no thanks and from there their attention changed a little bit. They stopped going to our table to see if we needed anything else. It was ok so far but when we get the check. We noticed some extra charges. 🤔 We were embarrassed to ask but we did anyway because we didn't order coffee or vodka shots. They updated our bill but it was wrong to do that. The food was excellent tho ... 😋but I don't think we will come back. At least not with my family, they deserve better experiences.

I had a very good experience. The food was delicious.

Google
Clean and spacious interior with a simple layout, bar situated on the left side as we entered. We were greeted warmly and promptly seated by Fabian. Folks craving seafood have come to the right place. Warm bread with butter to start. We tried Sea Bass and Paella for one. Paella is packed to the brim with shrimps, clams, mussels, squid and fish. Delicious! Sea Bass was a bit salty but Fabian and Paola took steps to resolve immediately. Fine examples of customer service culture, really appreciate and very grateful!! Highly recommended and we will come back for more!

Great food but the sandwiches was a bit dry

Google
Amazing food! I always return for the Bandeja paisa, Rainbow cookies, and the sandwiches! Service is friendly and professional. Bilingual staff who pride in their work. Staff wear masks, cleans continuously, and practice social distancing in the dining area. Highly recommend!

Google
An awesome family owned restaurant with Uruguayan food. Great place for a drink or quick bite at the bar or have dinner or lunch at a table. They're variety of dishes and also good wines to choose on the menu. The food is fresh generous portion sizes and served by their friendly and attentive staff. The decor is elegant and is a great experience. I recommend the parrillada since it's a restaurant with Uruguayan. The best and favorite restaurant in Jackson Heights, Queens New York.

Yelp
Soups are just perfect for these cold winter days/ nights. Flavorful and lots of veggies and chicken could be a meal in its self the pasta dishes are on point Since I'm usually a afternoon person The staff is very friendly and helpful Never to crowded The place is spotless and inviting Very long sleek bar with tables looking out on to 37th ave. Like a live person fish tank I'm sure it's great on a winter afternoon or evening when the snow is falling Some days I just come in for a few beers and it's ok. Music is a medley of America and Spanish at a level you can hear your self think. A nice place.

Excellent wine selection Love the parillada Uruguay Great service I highly recommend this restaurant

Yelp
I usually get the parillada when I come here... You get a variety of meats, sides, a little bit of everything, it's delicious ! Their Skirt steak is also really good and the empanadas are the best .

Zaydee F.

Yelp
One of my new favorite places! Great food and drinks, the churrasco was the best I've had for sure. Live music and karaoke makes for a fun family night. Super friendly staff from the moment you walk in!

Yelp
I work at a school nearby and will order in from time to time when I don't bring my own lunch. Love the steak milanesa sandwich and the empanadas. Food always arrives warm and is super tasty!

Yelp
La Gran Uruguaya is one of our favorite places for dinner. The food, drinks, and staff is amazing. Desserts are to die for. The dulce de leche pancake are delicious! I We love the vibe at La Gran Uruguaya - never disappoints

Yelp
Fuimos de Miami y llegamos a este restaurant y grata sorpresa nos llevamos, la comida deliciosa, la atencion impecable, es muy recomendable para pasar un momento en familia.

Yelp
My first few times here even though I didn't actually go there. They do deliver for a fee but it was worth the fee. I believe I ordered thru Seamless. Pretty much the same menu as if you dine which I will confirm one of these days when I do so. Delivery was easy and fast and the food was packaged well from the restaurant and the delivery guy because every thing came at the right temperature. I've ordered the same thing both times, which was the Mixed Grill with Fries. Both times were delicious. I'll end up trying one of their other dishes soon as well. Definitely will be back.

Pelham P.

Yelp
The meat? Shockingly, was not good. Tough and fatty. On top of that, it was amateur night, I guess, and the live music they offered was loud. Like, really loud. Service was very nice.

Fernando C.

Yelp
Been coming to this restaurant for a long time already and it's always been great. I definitely recommend "El chivito al Plato" it's plenty enough for two people.

Yelp
Stopped In This Space Randomly. It Was Alil Lively & People Looked Like They Were Enjoying Themselves. Since It Was A Saturday. There Was A 25 Minute Wait However, The Manager / Host Told Me My Wait Was Right Away (5 Minutes). That Was A Good Look & Pretty Smooth; Since I Was Trying To Impress Someone . Wasn't Doing Dinner, So We Got APP's & Drinks. Not To Expensive. Very Flavorful. The Wait Was Alil Long; But I Understand How It Is On A Saturday In Jackson Heights, Queens. All & All I Would Go Back To Try More. Looking At Those Other Meals On Everyone's Elses Table Had Me Starving On My Lil Date . Will Be Back.

Yelp
This place is not 100% good with service and specially with the food. I made an order of parrillada for two and it only came with a lot of chinchulines and only one steak and one beef ribs.

Giovanni R.

Yelp
I ordered my Christmas dinner at this restaurant and it was a very bad experience. Beef jerky and a side that is definitely not worthy of a 24 dollar Christmas menu.
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
The plate had a smear on it, and got attitude for asking for a clean one! The margarita I had was good but the wings too hot! Was just slapped on a plate! Sauce only was on one side of my wing!!! The worst, NO TOILET SEAT IN THE WOMENS BATHROOM!!

Paula S.

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant in Jackson Heights. The food is excellent and the service is terrific. My husband and I have been going there for 7 years and we are never disappointed. Treat yourself!

Yelp
Found this place by googling. Decided to come for my mother's b-day. The food was delicious and they served a lot. For the price it was worth it. The waiter could have came around a little more but either than that it was a great experience and I would definitely return. Right next to it was the bakery with so much goodies but by the time we were done eating the place wss closed so we didn't get to eat any dessert. Will come back.
google avatar

Nat A.

Yelp
Their red sangria is a must. Great flavor and packs a punch. We had the parrillada for one (enough for 2 people). The yuca fries and chicken empanada tasted great. The beef empanada lacked seasoning but everything else was amazing. We'll be back.

Yelp
I haven't come here for a full meal or for drinks, but the baked goods fulfill the cravings instilled in me from visiting Buenos Aires, even if the proprietors here hail from across the Río de la Plata. That means dulce de leche on just about everything, from alfajores to medialunas (similara to croissants). Even the churros come in a variety doused in dulce, which is pretty much the only time I will actively seek out a churro. The quality of the baked goods is excellent across the board.

Yelp
Best take out grilled platter. So surprised at how well the meat was prepared. Sides of tostones, maduros did not disappoint. Empanzado carne sandwich hit the spot.
google avatar

Marjorie S.

Yelp
The bakery is just great. Went there because some friends took me and I'm in love. Tried a couple of Uruguayan sweets and bread and everything was just delicious. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
I highly recommend this restaurant, I sat at the bar and the bartender Johana was very attentive, professional and made great recommendations about food and wine, I had the Uruguay's Tannat 2011, a delicious wine that I enjoyed a lot. If you want to stopped by I suggest to sit at the bar and ask for Johana, I am sure she will give you a 5 star service.

Yelp
They have the remoteless idea of how to make a decent Coffee. A shame because Uruguayans are know for rich and flavorful Coffee. The "Asado de Tira" Grill Ribs. I rated 6 on the scale of 1 to 10 and service is far from what you pay. I love a good South American restaurant, but this one did not make any of my expectations. Many others in the area with better, food, better service and specially BETTER COFFEE. Sorry Guys, you have to improve a lot to gain your customers

Yelp
Dont listen to these other morons, this place is great. Portions are massive, quality of food is great. Their skirt steak dish is excellent, Bandeja paisa is better here than any Colombian place in the neighborhood and their not even Colombian. Its like a sports bar/ restaurant nice atmosphere, service is slow just like in miami and south America, that's normal. For the price and the quality and size of portions cant be beat. highly recommend entrana (skirt steak) I've eaten at top steakhouses blt prime meats, delfrisco's, ect.... sometimes id rather just eat here. bakery is awesome too, but I like the one on the next block alittle more. Its Uruguayan as well

Yelp
Yes! Great food, warm & very welcoming place.. if you like steaks, tapas & sangrias, this is the right choice! And if you appreciate soccer, you'll love it even more!

Yelp
I love this place. They have the best grill and a great variety of food. The place is clean and the service was excellent. I'll recommend it.

Yelp
I love this place. I always get the churrasco with tostones when I go & a big portion to . The service here is kind of like in nyc, even tough in queens is hard to get a good service this guy's have found the recipe to put a team together. Is a team work effort, everyone who was on the floor approach my table to see if my son and I were ok. This is the kind of employees I would like to have when I have my place. Great jobs guys. Thank you

Yelp
I think it was a little overpriced for a meal that didn't even have rice included. The sauces were really good, the service was great and the owner was super sweet. We watched the final game in there for the World Cup. There was a confusion. Originally we put down the cash and tip included but since we stayed longer, after and the people who treated us to the meal left before us we thought they didn't put the tip down. We gave an additional tip, now I don't know if the guy knew or not. But I don't appreciate this double tip situation

Buckles And Strap S.

Yelp
The food here is pretty bad..there might be one or two dishes that are ok but really just a place to have a drink..prices are high for what you are getting..the service was attentive considering they automatically include the tip on the check nice outdoor seating.

Yelp
Good food but very slow service. Not a quite restaurant to enjoy your meal. Many T.V's with people hanging at the bar drinking watching soccer making weird woohoo sounds as a goal was made or something. Some of the men at the bar kept staring at my friend and I and was a little creepy. More like a half way sports bar half way restaurant. Not a place that I would run to return to. Okay sangria I've had a lot better. They weren't busy so that's usual a sign of a business but I was willing to give them a try. Oh well...there's many other restaurants near by for me to try.

Yelp
Love the customer service and delicious food and drinks... always our go to spot for something casual and yet still awesome!

Sofia M.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant. Even though I live far away from here it is still so delicious. Having a Uruguayan background myself this place really hits home. Every time I come I order a Chivito. It is absolutely delicious. After I usually go to their bakery which is conveniently located next to the restaurant. I very much enjoy this place and is by far my favorite place to eat. Would suggest for everyone to go and eat some delicious Uruguayan cuisine.

Yelp
Sorry to all the soccer fans and much respect. But because there was a game we were made to wait, then the food was ok nothing special I mean it's BBQ really can't mess that up. But wait really makes me give them a low score is I hate when restaurants think they can self impose the tip on the bill. It's as to say who cars how my service will be I'll get my tip either way. NOT A FAN OF THIS ACTION.
google avatar

Alan M.

Yelp
I am from Colombian descent and my wife is from Uruguay so I understand what the food on the menu should taste like. The food is average and not seasoned very well. Portion size is good but not a bargain and service is extremely slow. Place looks like it was updated but more to the style of a sports bar. Not a place to have a conversation or classy dinner with the obnoxiously loud music and karaoke singer on staff. This place is designed for the lonely drunk older male still trying to be cool. Stereotypes the lower levels of the Latino community but maybe it suits the locals.

Victor B.

Yelp
I called at 10pm to place an order for food... I have 5 people that are coming over in the next 15 minutes and we were about to order over $100 worth of food... After speaking to the waiter at 10 I told him that I was going to call back at 10:30 to place an order since they told me last call was at 10:40... I called back at around 10:30 to place the order and the waiter told me that the kitchen was closed half an hour before their set closing time, I got to the restaurant at around 10:50 to speak to a manager and when asked for one they told me that the manager was on vacation and wouldn't be coming back for another 10 days... This is completely unacceptable especially when I gave them half an hour notice that we were going to be placing an order. Oh well, nice to know that they wouldn't want my business anymore and time to order from cositas ricas instead

eldon a.

Yelp
Amazing food, the portion was amazing! The meat are so good that I have to eat more than I can normally eat. The avocado from the ceviche was awesome! Too bad im allergic to shrimp but all i can say is bien!

Yelp
Wow very special and unique place! I love it! The food was great and service is 5 stars ++

Catherine V.

Yelp
My husband and I are hosting a party in the next 30 minutes and now we don't have any food for it because they decided to close the kitchen half an hour before they're closing time... Granted, we wanted a lot of food but most of it was fried and a few skirt steaks to go along with it, not that big of a deal to make and wouldn't be too time-consuming, we called them at 10 o'clock to tell them to place the order and then again at 10:30 to confirm the order... When we spoke to them at 10:30 they already told us the kitchen was closed so we assumed that the food was already prepared... When we got there, it turns out that they did not prepare the food and they did not place the order so my husband asked to speak to a manager, They told him that the manager was not there and that they wouldn't be coming back for another 10 days... How could you run a restaurant without any form of management!? Fortunately there are other places that is properly staffed with management and are happy to take our money would notRecommend again to anybody

Yvette G.

Yelp
The music is low the ambiance is not great they have happy hour and it's good but you have to have music for you to want more drinks and keep on drinking and invite friends to have a good time . There is a lot of competition in the area.

Andres M.

Yelp
Well I've been living in the area for many years now, A lot new restaurants are popinng up in this area , La nueva Urugualla have been there for many yrs now , used to be like the classic south American cafe/restaurant, I went there last night after so many years, that place looks like a "sport bar/night club/ restaurant loud music playing, cant even talk to the person sitting next to you, service its kind of slow, I asked for a glass of water.. they came after almost 7 minutes with a class of water, food was ok from 1-10 at 6 will be ok! Waited almost 40min to get the food to the table.. food was getting cold already. There is a group of men hanging and drinking at the bar, they were chasing every lady at the restaurant, this guy even was asking table to table if they would like to dance with him, so loud, I was about to leave, he came to my wife and asked her out to dance, thats is really unrespecteful I just gave him a dirty look! As it seem this guy looks like he go to the bar every weekends there! Anyway. If you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy a good south American meal with your love one , no you place.and if you dont want this Dominican guy to ask you wife or date to dance with him, go somewhere else a lot places near by!
