The Best Hotels in Cape Town for a Truly Local Stay - AFAR

"Set in a 19th-century farm building in a buzzy pocket near Kloof Street, this intimate hotel evokes a Provençal farmstead with a shaded courtyard planted with pomegranate, guava, avocado, and olive trees. With five rooms and a two-bedroom cottage clustered around the garden, interiors are unfussy and inviting—white hand-embroidered linens, vintage furniture, clawfoot bathtubs—and morning service of fresh croissants, pain au chocolat, baguette, and homemade jams reinforces the French-country-house feel." - Mary Holland

La Grenadine

"Set the scene for us: Where is this hotel, and what does it look like? What's the vibe?Stumbling across a quirky little hotel (five rooms and a self-contained cottage), squeezed into a restored 19th-century farmhouse in a walled garden, seems too good to be true. It’s down a quiet cul-de-sac, but minutes from Kloof Street’s hopping nightlife and restaurant scene. Through a wooden gate, you enter La Grenadine’s private garden with vintage garden chairs in the shade of an old orchard of guava, avocado, pomegranate, and lemon trees. The French owners, creative couple Maxime & Mélodie, have recreated a little piece of Provence oozing with Gallic charm in the middle of Cape Town. Edith Piaf vinyl on the record player wafts across the shady garden, terra cotta pots overflow with flowers and herbs, and a couple of barefoot children frolic on the grass. It’s rather idyllic! Sounds divine! Who's staying here?European models and families with young children. Well, those are two opposite ends of the spectrum. But we digress—how was check-in?The place is owner run, so don’t expect a seamless hotel check-in. You may have to holler to get someone’s attention, but that's part of the attraction—it feels like you’re staying with friends. There's always someone around to answer questions or point you in the direction of a lunch spot or yoga class. That's helpful. Now, onto the good stuff: Tell us about your room. Two of the five rooms are upstairs, so obviously have the best outlook. From Room 4, you can walk out onto a shared terrace and gaze at Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. Furnishings are the owners' picks of secondhand, vintage, and contemporary pieces that work to create a charming whole. A revitalized cast-iron Victorian bath has pride of place alongside a dreamy looking bed made up in French hand-embroidered white linen. We can't wait to see it ourselves; that sounds so cute. How about the room service, and the food, more generally?A traditional French breakfast is included, and shouldn’t be missed as almost everything is homemade. Croissants, pain au chocolat and baguette are all freshly baked, there are French cheeses, ham from Hartlief, the local German deli, fruit salad, homemade muesli and yoghurt, freshly squeezed juices, jams and good coffee. It’s all served on antique Meakin crockery. The Meakin crockery really does it for us. Any other services or features you'd like to shout out? There’s no pool, but the city’s beaches are close enough to take a dip. The garden is sometimes used for modeling shoots, and the owners occasionally organize tango evenings, poetry or literature readings, or outdoor movie nights. The two-bedroom cottage is ideal for families. They can frolic safely in the walled garden. Parking is limited, so it’s best to Uber or take a cab, but there is so much within walking distance you may not need to." - Jane Broughton

La Grenadine, Cape Town, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Having met and fallen in love in, and with, Cape Town, Parisian couple Melodie and Maxime elevated Franco-African chic to a whole new level with this unique ‘petit hotel’. It’s rustic yet stylish, urban yet tranquil - and we were made to feel at home within minutes. Originally stables, and subsequently a school and private residence, La Grenadine has been transformed with sensitivity and style by its artist owners. While retaining the charm and history of the old architecture, the thick, cool walls, high ceilings and wooden beams are now offset with an airy colour palette, arty décor, and touches of Africa. Metal and glass verriere walls reminiscent of Parisian apartments separate bathrooms from the 5 bedrooms; there's also a charming 2-bedroom cottage. Chairs upholstered in funky African prints and bold protea flowers in vases remind you that you’re in Cape Town. The peaceful, slightly wild, scented and fruit-laden garden is a rare find in the city centre; step out of this hidden oasis and you’re within walking distance of Cape Town’s hippest bars, restaurants, galleries, museums and sights. This is ideal for urban explorers and nature lovers alike; beaches and Table Mountain are only a 10-15 min drive away. Highs A fabulous location: tucked away so you'll get a good night’s sleep, but walking distance from Cape Town’s social buzz Fantastic pricesThe garden: jasmine scents the air, and pomegranate, guava and avocado trees create pools of shadeMaxime and Melodie are warm, friendly, helpful and interestingInstagram-worthy vignettes at every turn Lows No poolOnly the Mountain View Rooms have air con, and only The Cottage has a TVBathrooms are semi open-plan so lack privacy, and showers over baths or open to the room make everything a bit wetOff-street parking is limited and tight, but you can do without a car here (an additional High!)" - Jo Duxbury

My husband and I are just back from our first trip to Capetown and staying at La Grenadine for seven nights made our trip - it was like home away from home. Maxime and his staff were brilliant. We were made so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was situated on the top floor and was absolutely beautiful - large bedroom with plenty of windows and large bathroom. There was also a lovely terrace with a partial view of Table Mountain. Breakfast each morning was excellent and eating same out in the garden was a bonus. The hotel was so central within walking distance of everything. Maxime organized two day trips for us - one to Cape Hope and one to the vineyards with Talent as our driver. No matter what question you had Maxime was always there to help you as were his staff. Thanks once again for a memorable and magnificent stay in Capetown. It was an oasis in a busy city. Ray and Patricia.

We really enjoyed our stay. We were given a warm welcome unlike any other hotel and felt like we were visiting friends or family. The rooms were large and beautifully dressed in a shabby chic style. The breakfast was hand selected quality foods. The owner and staff were genuinely interested in us and gave relevant and quality local guidelines and recommendations on restaurants and attractions suitable for the duration of our stay. We will definitely book again if we stay in Cape Town.

We had such a lovely four-night stay at La Grenadine - we loved the central location off of Kloof street - a short walk to lots of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and for groceries or pharmacy. La Grenadine itself is beautiful and thoughtfully designed with lots of charm and attention to detail. Our room was large and had beautiful views. We slept well and enjoyed the large bathtub. Zephora and Natasha were extremely helpful and friendly throughout our stay and we were sad to say goodbye to them!

La Grenadine is small boutique hotel on a quiet side street near the buzzling Kloof Street in Gardens. It has a bout 10 rooms, a lovely court yard garden and the most attentive and helpful staff that anyone could imagine. We felt a personal touch from the first minute of our 4 day stay in October. It was clear that our personal comfort was at the center of the team. From the freshly prepared breakfast in the morning to tea and cookies after a long day the staff attended to all of our needs. We enjoyed the quirky decor in the main living space, the comfortable room and the excellent food.

Really lovely guest house style b&b in a fantastic location. Parking was a little tricky but available when needed. The room was comfortable and had really interesting character. We found breakfast a little lacking as a few things were finished such as eggs/croissants (perhaps we arrived towards the end of breakfast service). Would stay again if in the area and would recommend.

An amazing place to stay in Cape Town, a hidden gem right in the middle of the city. Located in a nice street, walking distance to cafes and shops. Set in a beautiful garden, we had a lovely, spacious room with nice views on both sides and a view of table mountain. Incredibly friendly, warm, welcoming staff!

We are a family of 3….senior married couple traveling with adult daughter. Extensive travel around the world. First time in Cape Town. Spent 6 nights at the Petit. Would echo many of the comments here regarding location, cleanliness, staff and breakfast. For us , what first set the Petit apart was the recommendations for restaurants and curated wine tastings offered by the hosts well before our arrival-all of which were spot on. Secondly, when one of our party fell ill for a few days, the staff (especially Natasha!) went above and beyond in taking care of our every need (including going into town to purchase food as soon as she heard we were in need of chicken soup!) and directing us to a local pharmacy for medicines. Lovely place and people-highly recommend the Petit Grenadine!

This place is full of charm. Comfortable, Romantic and quiet, lots of attention is put into the details and you will feel at home as the people are so kind and thoughtful. We also loved the homemade breakfast, so tasty ! So great to start the day. Location is also very central and convenient to go anywhere in cape town. Thank you Natasha and Sephora
