How José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen Is Feeding Migrants at the Border - Eater Austin

"World Central Kitchen typically partners with local restaurants to help prep and serve food as an additional way of supporting the local food scenes. This time included regular partner McAllen restaurant Koko’s and Del Rio restaurants La Hacienda and El Patio Del Rio, the latter of which closed down in order to focus on cooking for the camp." - Nadia Chaudhury

Yelp
Well, keeds, this is in the old Elks Club, to which my granddaddy belonged, so it was nostalgic. Kinda. Where did those women's bathrooms come from?! I was there at lunch during the week, and it was pretty slow. So slow, the servers were hard to find. They didn't come around too often. Chips were fried flour, they may have been homemade, but they were pretty uniform. Tasty though, as was the red salsa that came with. Margaritas were only on the rocks, but fine and dandy. I got the beef chile relleno. It was fried well, had plenty of beef with melted cheese on top... but what is it with the places I've hit in Del Rio so far?! They don't believe in spices? Very bland meat in the poblano. A shame. Rice and beans were ok, nothing to recommend. Ah well, if they have fifty things in Del Rio, it's Mexican restaurants. We'll get to them. Laterdays, weekenders!

Yelp
Walked in a few minutes before 1:00 and had the place to myself. The greeter didn't seem to be in a good mood (no smile, no welcome) but the place is old-timey authentic in decor and furnishings. Was served good salsa and tortilla chips - the chips...I'm sure they mean for them to look rather burnt, but they didn't taste all bad. I ordered a chili relleno, which was passable. Server never checked on me, never asked if I needed a refill, etc. Food was meh. Service was meh. Overall - a total meh. Maybe if I went back when alcohol was flowing, this would be a happening place, but yeah - I won't be going back since neither the service or food made an impression.

Yelp
The outside and the inside of the restaurant is very nice. Tables are a Mexican tradition giving it a nice look and vibe. Food was delicious and good portion on my plate. I really enjoyed the rice and beans that came with my plate some places have them really hard. The service was excellent our waitress was very kind and checked on us multiple times. Will be trying this restaurant again.

Yelp
This authentic restaurant is located in an old historic Lions Club building. The setting is very cool. The menu is basic and no frills. Enough beers are on their list for all tastes. The chips and salsa came out with my ice cold Miller Lite. The red smoky salsa was delicious, and one of the best I have ever had in a Mexican restaurant. The chips were homemade and fresh. My enchilada plate came out quick and hot. The rice and beans tasted like they were made in Mama J's kitchen, which is always a plus. The enchiladas were stuffed well, and covered in just the right amount of cheese and sauce. I also ordered some chiles toreados, which were fried just right to keep their crunch and freshness. They weren't too spicy, and the flavor was good. I would come back here my next time in Del Rio. For the service, the food, and the price - it was quite the find.

Yelp
the Enchiladas were greasy the service did not get the tea refilled until we asked plus the food need seasoning

Yelp
Simple menu. Authentic flavors and taste. They only speak Spanish (love it). I got beef enchiladas. Amazing. Strong margs. Will be back before i rotate home. Support small business owners.

Yelp
Excellent service in a classic location. Food was a good value and we'd definitely return.

Yelp
I refuse to eat Tex-Amex ever again. I want my authentic Mexican from here on out. Staff very friendly. I should have know it was goi g to be a blessing to my stomach when I walked in and English is the second language. I think I will identify as Mexican because I want to cook with the soul these people cook with. I never ever clean my plate. Even eating good food. I am embarrassed to say that I "literally" wanted to lick my plate.

Yelp
The service was excellent.. Quick, efficient, and accommodating. The salsa they bring to the table is awesome, enough heat to make you happy. I poured it over my Huevos Ranchero. Before putting the salsa on the eggs ìt, it was a little bland, but after YUM! My sister got the Ticino y Huevos and thought the bacon was too well done. Their sodas come in ice cold cans, not fountain, served with a glass of ice.

Yelp
I was hesitant because we were the only ones there at lunch time. They do not have a buffet anymore like some of the photos represent. But the food off the menu was absolutely amazing! The best enchiladas I've ever had and I've had a lot of enchiladas.

Yelp
The restaurant itself is a beautiful old building that brings you into a hauntingly beautiful time in history that no longer exists. It's for this reason it's a tragedy the food does not live up to its ambiance. I wish it did, I really do, but the food was barely "ok" and would not warrant more than 2 stars save its beautiful historical building.

Yelp
I like this place, even tho it was late. They made me breakfast, I had a Machacado con huevo and refried Beans. Portions were generous and had a good flavor, coffee was made fresh and they also served me milk since I like my coffee with milk. I will definitely be back on my next trip to Del Rio. The place was clean, the had a buffet that look delicious (but me being me, I can't skip breakfast), the Mexican music was soft classic and pleasing to the hear. Money wise is good, this is one of those places you pay and get good food and good service.

Yelp
Been here in Del Rio for a couple of months now, and this has been my go to for breakfast tacos and chimichangas. The service is very good and building very clean, very happy with my experiences here.

Yelp
The food was mediocre at best and the service was terrible. The enchiladas were bland and served without cream. The margaritas were severely weak and when my wife ordered a soda they brought the can without a straw or cup with ice and didn't even offer. Just set the can down and walked away. We had to wait until they brought the bill to ask for ice. All that being said, the bathroom was clean.

Yelp
Very good food and amazing architecture of the building. We've been there multiple times and have had an amazing experience each time.

Yelp
We really enjoy this place in this one hundred year old brick building. The service is great and the restaurant is clean. The chips could be thinner and fresher, but most of the food is very good. I like the gorditas and the rice pudding a lot. We would go a couple times a month at least till the virus hit. We miss it but just can't go till this virus is over.

Yelp
A must for the weary travelers. Comforting friendly atmosphere with a homey feel. The service was top notch and our waitress offered good suggestions. She never let our drinks go dry. The fajitas were very tasty. I had the combo fajitas and would have them again in a heartbeat. The carmelized onions were done perfectly. The three meats (chicken, shrimp and steak) didn't disappoint. THE PRICES MAKE THIS THE BEST VALUE IN DEL RIO.

Yelp
Service is good, food is buffet or you can order plates. No issues. Gets packed during lunch hours.

Jocquetta F.

Yelp
The food was amazing! So far the best enchiladas I've had before and the margaritas were super! I'll definitely be back a few more times.

Yelp
Best cheese enchiladas! I love, love the sauce on them! Everything tastes cooked from scratch. Hot sauce had a kick! Sign of a great Mexican restaurant! Fast and friendly service.
google avatar

Yelp
Not the place to go for dinner. The tortilla were stale, the beef meet for the beef fajitas was sub par. The chicken was ok but nothing I couldn't make myself. The chips although they may have been homemade weren't good. The rice and beans were tolerable and the salsa seemed fresh.

Yelp
What good Mexican food! The cheesy enchiladas, 2-3 kinds of soups ((so tasty), their mole' chicken, and still more dishes on their buffet. And of course, they serve the standard tostada chips with a tasty hot sauce(which i could drink). Also they have a salad, condiment and fruit bar. And their salad leaves are an upgrade to assorted spring greens ( i just use their hot sauce for a dressing). Their delightful rice pudding should be called 3 treasure pudding, the treasures being vanilla bean, cocanut flakes, and raisins. Also the ssrvice is terrific!

Yelp
Great takeouts on Wednesdays and Fridays! Specials vary from week to week... great posole, Caldo, chicken fried steak, beef tacos, chicken tacos, etc.... Always hot and delicious! Great, friendly customer service!

Yelp
Went to La Hacienda for lunch today and I was impressed. We had the lunch buffet along with many other locals. There was standard enchiladas, caldo, rice, beans, etc. but hey also had very tasty chicken mole, chicharrones, and some really good carne guisada. I'm not really a fan of mole sauce but La Hacienda's was on point. My friend said it was very mild tasting--meaning the chocolate flavor didn't overpower the dish. I agree. This was the first time that I've tried chicharrones as a dish and I like it. I wish mine were more crispy but my friend said he enjoyed he texture, so I'm not sure how they ought to be prepared. In any event, they were good! Service was fine and friendly. What more do you need? I'd have no qualms recommending this place to anyone in the area; stop in for lunch and you'll not be disappointed.

Yelp
Ate there on Tuesday evening around six and ordered the combination fajitas and an appetizer that was chili can case so but it was chorizo and cheese on nachos. We also had a margarita each. I've had a better margarita with a bottle of Mrs. teas and that's about the cheapest worst margarita mix I've ever had. For Mexican food place I think they should have a little better margarita. The appetizer was good. The fajitas were pretty good. We actually had the owner and someone else working with him who couldn't speak English but he was sweet. The owner himself was curt and not very friendly at all. He never smiled or made us feel welcome at all. Probably not going to recommend this as a wonderful place to go and have a nice dinner.

Yelp
Food was very good and the atmosphere was nice. I got the chicken enchiladas, which were good. The server was kind and attentive. I'd recommend coming here!

Yelp
Have been frequenting this establishment for many years now. I refuse to go anywhere else for our meat market needs. Best cuts and prices in town.

Yelp
THE REAL DEAL! Outstanding Mexican restaurant in downtown Del Rio, Texas. Great authentic atmosphere, very courteous and friendly staff. Chips and salsa are fresh and homemade. This will definitely be my favorite restaurant in town. Sorry I ate my nachos before I could take a picture for yall. Don't take my word for it..go try it for yourselves.

Yelp
We stopped while driving through town. The food, particularly the steak fajitas, was delicious and the service was fast and friendly. We were also able to park our travel trailer across the street in a large empty parking lot!

Yelp
Really tasty and affordable lunch buffet. The enchiladas are good! Large enough place to have a get together. Staff is always nice.

Yelp
I first went here for lunch about 8 years ago and it was really good. Went last night and it wasn't even close. Dinner started out with the toilet being clogged, then I was informed that they didn't have about 90% of the beers on the menu. Had to ask for chips and salsa twice and when the chips did come out they were cold. Chimichangas were decent, but the rice tasted kind of bleachy. Perhaps it was an off night, but this time around I wasn't very pleased.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised!! I have driven past this place for years, finally took a chance. The buffet was available, and we just lucked out, getting here for the second wave of lunch. I am looking forward to coming back, ordering from the menu.

David R.

Yelp
Great food and service. Their lunch buffet cost only $7.99 and has every type of Mexican food imaginable.

Yelp
Lunch was A OK. Good chips and salsa, good guacamole (although more tomatoes, onion and peppers than avocado but very tasty). Good cheese enchiladas. I would return. It was good.

Yelp
They quite literally had one of the best burritos I've ever eaten. We went with a group of 12 and everyone was thoroughly pleased with the meal they received, ranging from the ostensibly grease-saturated chimis (they weren't) to the Hacienda platter to fajitas. Certainly, it was pretty difficult to work out the reservation because the preferred language of the staff is clearly Spanish, but the payoff of the outstanding meal is definitely worth the effort. Also, if you go with a large group, you can expect a wait, but that's anticipated. This restaurant is fantastic and deserves more business than it currently enjoys; I would recommend it to anyone in Del Rio.

Yelp
We were first time visitors to Del Rio a couple weeks ago and stumbled upon La Hacienda. It's on the quiet side of town and there were few cars outside but we're very glad we ventured in. Cool rooms, great guacamole &!chips, my chile rellano was amazing and my wife really enjoyed her brisket burrito. Excellent service and price too. We have reason to be back in town this weekend and are planning to bring family.

Yelp
Only b/c you can't 0 star. So I know I live within shouting distance of the border, but I couldn't get anyone on the phone that spoke English, so thanks to a few years of spanish, I ordered in their native tongue. We ordered chimi's, one of beef and one of chicken. I thought the chicken were chicken nuggets b/c they were fried so bad. The chips and chimi's were saturated with grease, and there was nothing in the chimis except meat, and probably an ounce worth. It was down right awful. If I ever go there again it will be because it's close, the beer is cheap the salsa was pretty tasty, and I won't order anything from the menu that is an actual meal...

Yelp
Not bad at all, I enjoyed a sea food platter dish that has rice, beans, shrimps, tilapia & a chicken taco it was super delish, to quench my sweet after salty tooth I had the arroz con leche it was yummy. Also very vegetarian friendly delicious cheese enchilidas with rice & beans.

Daisy M.

Yelp
This restaurant could easily go up one or two stars if they cut down on the salt in their food. We had the lunch time buffet. The variety was good, the food was fresh, the flavors authentic (Mexican and some Tex-Mex), but the sodium was too high. If they cut back to half the salt their food will taste so much better. I loved the arroz con leche dessert.
