La Joya Cantina - Review - São Bento - Lisbon - The Infatuation

"La Joya Cantina is the rare Argentinian and Portuguese mash-up in Lisbon we didn’t know we needed. This intimate bistrot, located between São Bento and Chiado, is packed nightly with locals chasing what might be the city’s best milanesa, or meat empanadas that are punchy, and equally crunchy and soft. They’ve crammed in as many tables as possible, but you’ll still fight for a seat just to ensure their dulce de leche pancakes are in the cards for the night. The food smartly blends Argentine roots with Portuguese (and broader European) touches. Think grilled octopus and roasted leeks with almond purée." - Rita Geraldes

My friends and I had a delightful dining experience here! Yes the space is a bit tight (think cute and intimate vibe), but we loveddd the food (get the anchovies - trust me) and house wine, and the service from our lovely servers was super kind and friendly! ☺️ We would definitely come back the next time we’re in Lisbon. 🥰

I'll start by saying the staff is amazing here, very attentive since we walked in and super helpful. The table situation didn't feel ideal, they might have one too many - it’s quite crammed to the point where the person sat next to us almost knocked our water bottle while getting up to leave. The food was good, some dishes better than the others. The leek was good as was the empanada and Milanese, but the polenta on the other hand, was amazing, and so were the pancakes with dulce de leche and the flan. Some good wine selections, we tried a few and liked them all. I’d go back for the pancake :)

My partner and I visited here for our first meal out in Lisbon. We received a very warm welcome from the servers here, whose service was incredible the whole evening. The vibe in the restaurant is stylish, classy and not overdone, and has a fun and unpretentious atmosphere. The food was incredible, special shout out to the octopus and polenta which were our favourite dishes. No notes at all, an exceptional experience, thank you!

We passed by Joya to reach the restaurant where we had reservation but arriving to the destination we just go back and we had the chance to found a place because it was full ! We enjoyed our dinner. Simple place but Perfect vibe . Staff was very nice, kind and smiley. We really recommend you to have dinner or lunch their to discover the deli dishes designed by the chef… We took the anchovies and leeks the. Followed by the octopus and gnocchi and we finish with te pancakes and chocolate mousse

Booked La Joya for valentine’s dinner. Best choice I have ever made. The ambience of the restaurant is cozy and lit by candles on the tables. It’s the perfect romantic and intimate setting. The food is something else. We did not have a lot of expectations as the options and combos on the menu were quite simple and not surprising but oh my were we wrong. Everything, although simple, was delicious and we loved every plate. First, we ordered the ricotta and empanadas. The ricotta was such a pleasant surprise, we just kept on eating it throughout the whole meal. The empanadas were excellent as well with an incredible and authentic argentinian taste. For mains, we had the lemon and stevia gnocchi plus the milanese. The gnocchi was incredible, not too strong of a flavor but just perfectly balanced to eat with the milanese. The meat on the milanese was just on the right point! For dessert, we had the dulce de leche crepes with cream ice cream and let me tell you, I still have dreams about those. What a simple but delicious combination. Overall, a pleasant surprise and a true 10/10. Only flaws were the wine options weren’t very extensive if you don’t like natural wines or foreign. But apart from that, everything was excellent. Will be back!!!!!

I visited this restaurant last night, curious to see if it lived up to the buzz. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver. The interior leans into the now-familiar “dark and minimalistic” aesthetic—candles, moody lighting, and sparse decor—but instead of feeling atmospheric, it came across as dull and lacking in character. The space felt noticeably cramped, with tightly packed tables that made it hard to enjoy a private conversation. When the restaurant was full, the absence of any real sound insulation made the noise level quite overwhelming. My friend and I ordered the asparagus, Milanese, and gnocchi. None were bad, but none left a lasting impression on me—each dish was underwhelming and fairly bland. The wine list was another letdown, with prices ranging from €36 to €90, which is excessive for a venue of this style and setting. Service was fine, but nothing special. A suggested tip was added to the bill—something that’s becoming more common in Lisbon, but still feels presumptive when the experience is average. All in all, it felt more like a place following a trend than setting one. It may work for some, but for me, it missed the mark.
