My best friend from childhood was Peruvian. As an honorary member of her family, I grew up learning how to cook classic Peruvian recipes--lomo saltado, anticuchos, yucca, ceviche, and (my favorite) aji de gallina. I had the pleasure of dining at La Lena last Friday, and it immediately brought me back. The food, the dining room, and the friendly staff are warm and inviting. The ceviche was light and citrusy; the veggie empanada earthy, hearty, and cravingly flaky; and the aji de gallina instantaneously comforting. I'm excited to try the pollo a la brasa, chupa de camarones, alfajores... the list goes on. Given the diversity of food offerings in Portland, it can be difficult to think of a cuisine the city is missing. But after many drives to Gresham for Peruvian food, La Lena is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I can't wait to go back!
P.S. Tried both versions of their pisco sour. Where has this drink been my whole life? Hooked.
