La Locanda del Capitano

Once again, we had the pleasure of dining at La Locanda del Capitano... this time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Having lived in Umbria for the past four and a half years, we have grown to truly appreciate fine food and wine, and for me as a passionate food and wine lover, there is simply no better place than this culinary jewel in Montone. Chef Giancarlo Polito is more than just a master in the kitchen... he is a true gentleman. His genuine care for his guests and his dedication to creating unforgettable dining experiences set this restaurant apart. Every visit feels special, thanks to the perfect combination of exquisite cuisine, warm hospitality, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay much longer. We absolutely love it here, and La Locanda del Capitano continues to be one of the highlights of our life in Umbria.

Me and my family are staying next to Motone. Our hoste highly recommended us to have dinner at this place. And seeing it has a « bib michelin » we were very excited about our evening. The entire dinner was such a disappointment. We should have been alarmed that the chef welcomed us and was taking care of service. A chef should be in his kitchen, not front of the house. First they offered champagne. We all took a glass, not a single glass had the same amount poured. My brother in law had a glass of rosé… the bottle was surely opened for a decade, it was undrinkable. Then came the complementary hors d’oeuvres. Feels like they were ready to be served three days ago. Soggy, cold, stale buns. The chef was selling us the steak for two: i mean, the basic of a chef should know how to cook well a steak, it was over cooked. Moving forward to desserts, worst thing we ever ate. Service was so bad. I rarely post bad reviews but when it’s a pretentious restaurant and as expensive, i just can’t stand beeing so badly served really bad food. Just don’t go.

The restaurant here is truly exceptional and we had the best meal of our week in Italy. The setting is lovely just off the main square of Montone, a delightful hilltop town with stunning views all round. We were seated on the terrace and warmly welcomed by the chef patron. We opted for the a la carte as we couldn’t agree as a table all to have the tasting menu. If I went back I would definitely have this in order to sample more of the food! The starter of roe deer carpaccio was lovely and came covered in a dome with smoke, theatrically removed on serving. Main was fillet of lamb, which one of our party reckons is the best lamb they have ever tasted. It was special indeed. Dessert may well have been the highlight with the chocolate square absolutely knockout. All in all an absolutely special meal. The hotel itself is fairly ordinary with basic rooms.

Beautiful, charming, wonderful, friendly people and hotel. The whole town is like a step back in time. People know each other, they are not on their phones all the time and everyone is friendly. The Locanda was a special delight, with a good breakfast and excellent dinners in the evening. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and the beds are great. Hopefully we will soon return.❤

We weren’t sure if the hotel had a restaurant or if the restaurant had a hotel above it, but we were fortunate enough to experience both. We stayed here in July 2024 as part of our honeymoon during the Umbria Film Festival. The hotel exudes an absolutely charming vibe, with hospitality that’s second to none. The rooms are comfortable and spotless. Pro tip: upgrade to a superior room, and you’ll be treated to a lovely terrace where you can soak in the village's sights and sounds while sipping a glass of prosecco, waiting for your wife to get ready for dinner. And trust me, the dinner will be nothing short of magnificent—possibly the best I’ve ever had in Italy, and that’s saying something. We’ll be planning our future trips to Italy to ensure Montone and La Locanda del Capitano are always on the itinerary. With love, Pintyő and Daniel

My husband and I discovered La Locanda Del Capitano on a day visit to Montone. Taken by the beauty of the town we sought out a hotel so that we could stay over. Giancarlo and his wife Carma welcomed us and advised us of the local festival Donazione Della Santa Spina, they even organised us tickets for the local event. ||||The hotel is picturesque, a multi layered courtyard off of the main square. The room with balcony had wonderful views over the terracotta and the valley below. A beautiful sunset. The hotel decor is pure Italian, just what we wanted a true Italian experience. ||||The hotel is wonderful but it is the owners who perfect it! They could not have been more accommodating, from advising us on local events, recommending food and wine and helping us when we broke down!||||Not only were they amazing their ethos was felt through the staff, the twin brothers and Martina who all went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Don’t miss out on staying at this hotel, as you get a true taste of Italian hospitality. The highlight of our two weeks. We have promised ourselves we will return.||||We notice that that people have commented breakfast. We found this to be more than adequate. A typical Italian breakfast, a choice of freshly baked pastries . Perfect!

This place is a little hard to find, but worth it. The waiter was super friendly and explained the menu well. The wine selection is good, serving local as well a regional wines. The food is very good we had steak fillet and pasta and I can honestly say one of the best steaks I have eaten. It is romantic place and has lovely artifacts. Highly recommend for a personal meal

Dined here one evening with a family party. My son ordered various bottles of wine on the charming proprietor Giancarlo's advice, and we enjoyed them all. The food was delicate and refined, and delicious. I should note in particular the assemblage of raw fish and seafood which I had as a first course, really unique. It was followed by a classic thick cut steak, charred on the outside and tender and pink inside-as it should be. A good job I didn't try driving back to the hotel. A must.
