La Locanda del Cardinale

Outstanding experience. I chose this place for my husband’s love of history and the Roman ruins below the clear flooring of the restaurant. Ruins are also displayed in the restaurant from the excavation of the site. The staff were amazingly friendly and being that we were the first there, gave us a tour below the floor explaining the site. The restaurant itself is a charming juxtaposition of modern and old. The food was outstanding as was the service and hospitality.

Fresh cannolis where they fill the cream when served rather than having it pre-filled. The cannoli and cappuccino were delicious and the barista was very welcoming!

Monday evening so quiet night, hence score on atmosphere, not a criticism. Food was really excellent, well presented & tasty. It is definitely lives up to fine dining experience.

absolutely worth the trip - sitting in a room with so much history was incredible. they were even kind enough to let us in a bit early because we were wandering around in the rain. the staff was very helpful and courteous. we enjoyed the tasting menu and several bottles from their expansive wine list.

Great place and amazing food! The restaurant is based on an ancient Roman Villa. Highly recommended and worth the trip.

We had a really warm, relaxed, enjoyable meal at La Locanda. The location is far better than the photos on the website would suggest, the service was top notch, that wonderful blend of friendly, warm and welcoming with absolute professionalism that is so difficult to get right and the food was superb, taking the traditional and magnifying it just enough to make it really special.

We did just that, in the magical restaurant "la locanda del cardinale" castle like bldg. built in the 15th Century over Roman Qtrs. from A.D., seen below on a floor of glass. We drank white and red delicious wines and fed ourselves to satisfaction on a succulent duck appy, W. the the Misses dining on Rabbit and the Lad on Black Garlic Spaghetti w. lentils & chimichurri. Both meals were very enjoyable. The Black garlic spaghetti was wickedly good..:) Then we shared an elegant chocolate desert. Dance, dance, dance the night away Uh, come on baby, baby, dance the night away oh, ooh, yeah..:) Ciao mi Amicas, Avram V. Halen Jr.

The restaurant is housed in a medieval structure that was owned by the local cardinal. The original Roman house was revealed during construction and magnificently preserved by suspending a glass floor above the ruins. You may descend to the Roman grade and have a look around. The food was good, but the dining experience is profound. I would recommend a meal here just to see the architectural preservation, and the use of old and new structures. The chef came out to greet us and spoke decent English. A terrific experience.

The manager Marco is a pedantic ass (perhaps appropriate in Assisi but to be honest I've not before experienced his level of affected, supercilious behavior anywhere in Italy much less Umbria) who makes up reasons not to help his customers. The food may be fine but why waste your time with a jackass?

Upscale Italian food. Excellent service. Italian Design meets roman architecture. Actually build on the foundation of a roman Castello. You can see the Ruins and Fundaments through the glass bottom.
