La Luna Review - Pilsen - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If La Luna’s bright orange facade isn’t enough to catch your attention, then the quesabirria or horchata espresso martinis should do the trick. This Latina-owned restaurant serves classic Mexican dishes like enchiladas, flautas, and carne asada, but also does a Sunday brunch with things like an excellent chihuahua cheese and egg-topped chorizo breakfast sandwich, which goes great with any of their micheladas. You can also stop by for Happy Hour from Tuesday-Thursday with $10 margaritas and $3 tacos - you might even catch some live music." - Alyssa Reyes

Ordered some chicharrones(mostly fat) and yuca, the fatty chicharrones were not seasoned, the oil used for the food left an unpleasant after taste. Also ordered a very disappointing tres “leches” that was dry and had an old expired after taste. Sad

Definitely a modest and unassuming whole in the wall....a hidden gem that provides exceptional tex mex and El Salvadoran cuisine at a steal. Super authentic....order in Spanish to show respect for this delectable and bonafide cuisine.

I used to love this place, but unfortunately it's taken a turn for the worst when it comes to the food. Let me start off by saying that there were 4 of us in our party and I'm the only one that was dissatisfied. Although we all agree it was too expensive. Service was just fine, no complaints there. Friendly and attentive enough. I just found the food to be a little too much on the flavorless side, but this is the first time it's been like this out of a handful of times that I've been here.

The food was delicious which is the reason I gave it two stars instead of one. The service however was not good. The waitress was not attentive and took too long. I would have understood if it was busy but that was not the case. I will definitely be getting take out next time!

Not good experience.

I wish I would have checked Yelp like I normally do prior to going to Selena's Grill. I usually do, but we were doing some shopping at Lowe's (next door practically) and we decided to give this place a shot. Here's our experience on a nutshell. My family and I went for lunch on Sunday. We were the only customers in the restaurant, which immediately raise a red flag but didn't walk out. 1. Customer Service: We were greeted by the only staff there, she was also our waitress. She was cold and gave us the impression that we were bothering her with our presence. My mother had a question about an item on the menu...again cold, acted like her question was a bother (like we should know). 2. Atmosphere: It was OK...if you want to go watch a soccer game and have beer. I saw Happy Hour specials signs which were appealing for that type of thing. 3. Food: My kids ordered the mini-burritos, they got this HUGE burritos Chiptle size...we asked the waitress if that is a "mini", she said yes. They were all rice, not very flavorful at all (Chipotle far superior). My dish, my wife's dish and my mom's dish were not any better, too salty, didn't look fresh, didn't taste fresh, and yes still a cold waitress that seemed to be more annoyed every time we asked her questions. Keep long story short, this was our worst lunch experience ever! And to top it all off, my 4 year old daughter and wife, got FOOD POISING!!! STAY AWAY!!

Ordered fajitas and got no flour tortillas. Food itself lacked seasoning. Been here several times, but this is the first time I really feel they dropped the ball. It's also quite pricey.

Yelp
My husband and I have been moving so just trying the last few places we haven't in the area and tried these guys today. Pretty fast and easy good food. Got the 1/2 chicken with yucca and rice. Tasted pretty typical. The employees were nice and the area from what we saw was clean and sanitized after we moved away from the counter.

Yelp
Best food served, returned day after for different meal. Amazing meat is tender and so far no issues. Servers are great. Drinks are a bit pricey. Margaritas $10 each. Plato típico was amazing

Yelp
Authentic Central American family restaurant. Recently remodeled throughout, plenty of lighting, friendly female servers. including bathrooms. Dine in and takeout commencing at 10AM. Full bar and plentiful Variety of refreshments, beverages, juices, sodas, and beer. Juke box. Ample well lit parking. shared with Lowe's, Aldi's supermarket and other small businesses.

Yelp
Very poor service. Our waitress forgot drinks, our orders, and took plates before we were done eating. The food is overpriced considering it's quality. The rice was incredibly dry and the beans were cold. Steak and chicken were on point though.

Yelp
The food was horrible... I read the reviews before I went but I wanted to give it a chance anyway. Bad decision. I got some form of chicken Alfredo- the Alfredo sauce was like milk poured over the noodles and the grilled chicken breast was definitely the frozen kind. It also came with garlic bread which was topped with some kind of oil and a slight garlic flavor. It was like biting into a oil soaked sponge My friend got the carne asada.. the steak looked freezer burnt and the tomatoes were some kind of mash with a few peppers. Overall.. not good food. Waste of money.

Yelp
Food was okay, portion of the steak not equal, when u ask they told all plates are the same. (16 dollar plate ) Bringing not even half of the steak they offered and just fill the plate with rice, after complaining only answer we got is, it is what it is! I don't recommend this place to nobody. El lugar no es familiar y mienten con las porciones de la comida! Te llenan el plato de arroz y cuando te quejas, te dicen es lo qué hay, no recomiendo este lugar a nadie!

Yelp
We walked in like a evening in the wild wild west the place was almost deserted The chips and salsa look great but the salsa taste like tomatoes paste and water! The chips and guacamole look off and that's because the tomatoes, onions all the confetti awesomeness is missing! The chips are thin and bland. The fajita came out sizzling the chicken was well seasoned but chewy and full of fat and the shrimp was as chewy as a dog treat. The waitress was very nice and helpful

Yelp
I agree with many of the other comments. Sad. Food is quite good. However, initial greeting with directions whee to sit never happened. Sal so is indeed watery and below par as others have noted. Service is inattentive as well. Maybe it's a gringo thing, but didn't feel particularly welcome. On second thought, abd after some ti E passed waiting on the check. 10-15 minutes, I was likely too generous in my review. They just don't understand the concept of service at all! Finally walked to bar to get check

Yelp

Yelp
3.5 stars for food 2 stars for ambience 3 stars for service We had a Restaurant.com certificate to use so decided to give it a try. There are two doors and the one we picked was the bar. Ther patrons looked at us as we looked around for assistance. Getting none, we wandered in a bit and realized there was a restaurant section through a doorway. Entering there, it took a few minutes for someone to come out and tell us to sit anywhere. There was a table leaving as we were sitting down and then we were the only table the whole time we were there. There were a handful of people at the bar. The ambience is a bit of a mess. There's odd artwork (a metal painting and a paining of a giant flower that I could see). It was already a little dark inside and they turned the lights down more once we were there. It's apparently also a nightclub so there are disco and light balls and a DJ booth in the back corner--in addition to the 8 or so TVs (all tuned to some gangster movie on SpikeTv?!). But the food was a happy surprise. After the mediocre chips (tasted a bit stale) and salsa (tasted fresh but was quite watery and needed some more salt), the dinners were quite tasty. I had the carne asada and was expecting a tiny pile of meat. Instead, I got a huge amount of grilled steak cooked pretty close to what I requested (medium rare; it was bit towards medium) and was quite tasty. Hubby got the La Luna Special and it was decent. The shrimp was a bit overcooked but the chicken and steak were good. They each came with "salads" with fresh avocado, cucumber, shredded lettuce, and a salsa mix on top--everything was fresh and tasty. The beans were meh at best but the rice was very tasty--not red Mexican rice but a yellow rice. Be aware you get large portions. They special made tacos for our son which was nice, but I'm surprised there wasn't a kids menu with kid-friendly items. We got a side of French fries for our daughter and they were your basic fries but they were hot and tasted decent. She was happy. We also got a pork pupusa which was my first experience with one but it was gooey cheesy and yummy. The service was...good and bad. A girl brought our drinks, then a man took our orders, then she brought the food, he came out to check on us, and she brought boxes but forgot our to-go dessert, and he took our payment. It wasn't a big deal overall, but it was a bit of a let-down to wait 10 minutes after we paid to get the dessert figured out. We assumed the gentleman was the owner and he was super nice and friendly; I don't think we had two words from her the whole time. Overall, I'd say three stars. It was decent but there's room for improvement.

Yelp
Sketch; from the vibe to the ambience. - The food: three tacos and an order of mini nachos, took 40 minutes... The salsa for the chips were great, but the beef was really oily. Although I did appreciate the fresh radish slices, cilantro, and slice of avocado on my tacos :) When my friend wanted an extra shot of tequila in his half drank margarita, the lady took a straw, put it into his drink, and then put the straw in her mouth to see which tequila was used. Weird. - Staff: Highly recommend you know Español, as the staff doesn't fully understand English. The lady that reluctantly greeted us from behind the bar dressed like she was at a club. A risqué club ;) ... (So don't bring the Padres or go for your first date. Don't bring the family. Go to the restaurant side for that, if you have patience. Which is to the left of the bar). The entire time we were eating, all the staff was huddled in the corner singing the songs. So maybe it's a great place if you're a local at the baror if you know the staff. Meh. - Ambience: You might think you're at a reggaeton club...they play the music to the highest decibel. A very neglected, old bar. I felt dirty walking out of there. I wouldn't go there alone. Just an overall sketch place. I swear they have something illegal going on there. Working girls or something. But hey, that's my opinion. Check it out yourself. ;) We also saw what appeared to be a pimp there. With the whole white fur coat and fedora. So maybe go for the experience? Oh. This place is also known as "Selena's Grill."

Yelp
This is the worst "Mexican" restaurant I have ever been to. The staff was rude and inattentive, and made me feel like I was ruining their day by being there. The food took forever to come out and once served, was nothing more than warmed up food from a box or can. No flavor, completely bland, and waaaay over priced. $12 or three tacos... seriously? To top it all off, I got violently ill a few hours later. Do not recommend you waste your time here. Horrible food, horrible atmosphere, horrible staff.

Yelp
One of the worst delivery experiences. Ever. An item was missing from the order. Management claims that the delivery driver forgot it. He probably would have remembered it if it was actually packed for delivery. Another item was incorrect and the other inedible. Someone answering the phone actually hung up when I asked to speak with the manager. The only plus is that Grubhub refunded my money. My first night living a new in town and I'll be looking for new restaurants. This one isn't worth a second chance.

Frank R.

Yelp
Our first trip to this restaurant. We had the beef fajitas and seafood soup with cream. Beef fajitas were tasty. It's brought to your table sizzling. Served with pepper strips and sliced onions. Menu says it includes tortillas and guacamole. We were given plain pupusas and guacamole mixed with shredded lettuce. Had not seen that style of guac before. The seafood soup was also tasty. I ordered it with cream. It included half shelled shrimp, much smaller shelled shrimp, mussels on half shell and some unshelled, firm white fish which I took to be cod. I didn't think it had as much seafood as I've had in other locations, but I enjoyed it. We went there on Friday evening shortly after 7PM. DJ started playing music around 820 which got progressively louder while we waited for our check. A large speaker was above our table. We could hear the music outside when we left. If it had been that loud when we arrived, we would had not walked in. Might return for an earlier in the day meal when we expect it might be quieter.

Yelp
Would rate a negative stars if I could The food was ,barely edible and the service was horrible. The staff (including manager) was very rude and unwelcoming. Made us feel as we were an inconvience to them. The wait time was insane. I can't honestly say anything positive about the place. Worst place ever. Will NEVER set foot in there again.what a horrible experience and disgrace to that community. Save your $$ go somewhere else.

Yelp
Basic menu with Mexican and Salvadoran cuisine, food is pretty bland. Last couple times they did not have a large variety of sauce options that were listed on the menu. They do have daily specials on food and drinks. And a happy hour that lasts until 8pm on weekdays. Ladies bathroom could be better maintained and clearly needs some updating.

Yelp
I was cruising the parking lot by Lowe's (or is it My Lowe's) hunting for Dave's Dogs. No Dave's Dogs but spotted the La Luna sign showing tamales. So being tamale hungry I wandered into the restaurant. It was totally deserted save for one lady in the bar area. I asked her what kind of tamales they had and she said something unintelligible. So I said TAMALES again and she looked lost. So then I pointed to the sign and she said "We have chicken tamales." I wanted beef or pork, not chicken so I left. Now that I look at the Yelp ratings I guess I won't return.

Yelp
The food is incredible! This will be a new family spot for us. I love the authentic cuisine. Super fresh and flavored to perfection! Yum:)

Shazia H.

Yelp
I recommend La Luna to everyone!! They have a bar side separated by restaurant side. All the workers are friendly and helped us quickly. Food came out fast and the margaritas were on point!! Definitely will be going back!!!!!!

Yelp
I used to LOVE their pupusas- mostly bc the repollo complemented it so well. They changed their repollo and the taste is off now. Their pupusas are decent. Tacos are good. Nachos are okay. Horchata is the best!

Yelp
Place is a bust, food was ok, service was slow, not worth the wait, should have checked other reviews before trying this place out.

Gladys V.

Yelp
Worst Service ever The Food was ok the waitress was mean and horrible if I could give a minus star I would

Nefarious N.

Yelp
Great food at decent prices. Plenty of space and all the servers were happy to help and refill our drinks. Went on a busy Friday night and they got everyone's order right. This place has been around for a long time, but this was my first time ever visiting. Would recommend to friends

Helen L.

Yelp
After Church today my family and I decided to try some food, this restaurant was recommended to us and we tried it...however the service was truly horrible. We didn't get the server's name but she was very rude and at the end had included a 20% tip in the check. We know how it is to be a waitress but you have to earn the tip and be kind and respectful at least to the clients...this server even said she included that tip because we wouldn't tip otherwise which she's wrong. She ended with an attitude and threw the to go bag and containers on the table, as well as said we are the type to like everything for free. I continue with saying I have been a waitress and know how it is but my family and I were not close to being rude or inconsiderate. Do not recommend at all. The food was okay but the service ruined our lunch. The only nice person was the manager on duty, that genuinely apologized.
