Café Madeleine Review - South Park - San Diego - The Infatuation

"Sit under the red umbrellas on Café Madeleine’s patio for a relaxed breakfast while joggers dash by headed to Balboa. This spot has a much better food selection than your average coffee shop, like lamb merguez sausage sandwiches and crepes smothered in nutella and fresh fruit. It’s also a solid move for a meal a little later in the day—go with the spinach or prosciutto crepe, which have a creamy bechamel sauce so smooth it could talk its way out of a speeding ticket. Everything goes down well with their refreshing, mint-spiked French lemonade." - Sabrina Medora

Wanted to grab something quick on my work break and liked the menu offerings. I was not disappointed. The restaurant is a cross between a cafeteria style/bakery ordering and a cozy rustic atmosphere, with lots of seating in different rooms that make it feel more private and personal away from other crowds. The employees were super kind and gave me recommendations on dinner choices. I got the croque monsieur and seasonal chicken salad and both were delicious and exactly what I was looking for. The pricing was affordable. And the bakery still had dessert options despite being 1 hour to close. I really liked this place for my first time there, will definitely be back as there were so many options on their menu and bakery that I wanted to try. Definitely recommend.

This French cafe chain in the Spectrum at Reston Town Center delivers an outstanding breakfast experience, a fantastic selection of espresso beverages, and delectable French countryside fare, all at very reasonable prices. The charming old-country-style interior with a fireplace and captivating posters creates a warm atmosphere that enhanced our visit. The service is impressively quick and friendly. The avocado toast is a standout, topped with smashed avocado and balsamic vinaigrette on Turano bread, while the French country breakfast is hearty and satisfying. The lattes are creamy and satisfying. The waffle was soft, fluffy, and tasted perfect with blueberry syrup and cream cheese filling. Plus, the ample parking right in front of the cafe makes it convenient to enjoy breakfast here. I can’t wait to return and indulge in their French pastries and sweet treats soon!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ La Madeleine in Reston is a hidden gem for French-inspired comfort food! The fruit tarts were fresh and absolutely divine sweet, tart, and buttery perfection. The Chicken Madeleine was rich and flavorful, and both the French onion soup and vegetable soup hit the spot, savory, hearty, and full of depth. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the seating layout, some tables are a bit too close together, which can feel cramped during busier hours when everyone is trying to get by with their food trays. But overall, the food service and cozy vibe make it worth the visit. I’ll definitely be back! 🍽️🇫🇷

Google
La Madeleine left a great first impression. I enjoyed the meal, atmosphere, and service. I really felt as though I could be in a French café in France. This is an excellent choice for a relaxing and unique breakfast experience.

Great place. We came here to grab a cake. The atmosphere was very welcoming.

Google
I ordered La Madeleine for 35 people for an office lunch. An assortment of sandwiches, tomato pesto pasta salad, chips and mini desserts. It was great and everyone loved it! La Madeleine is consistently good. The delivered on time, set it up and the food was delicious. Highly recommend for any corporate lunches!!!

Google
This is my favorite place to eat breakfast when we lived here 7 years ago. I came 7 years later, still there and still have good atmosphere inside. Free breads service was gone but without kids, I don’t need it so that’s ok. I got latte which was delicious! Strawberry crape was a little too sweet and too much cream inside but it was ok.my husband’s omelette was good. I still like the place because it feels cozy and looks like a little cafe in France!

Google
The ordering process is confusing, I'm still not sure I fully understand how it works. Some signage would be helpful for us first time visitors. I ordered a Lorraine Quiche and Chai Tea Latte. The latte was delicious! I was disappointed with the quiche because the bottom crust was either undercooked or soggy. I ate the filling only, which was also under seasoned for me. Despite my first visit not being the best, I would like to give them another try.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try La Madeleine since I first discovered it and I just so happened to be in the mood for a coffee and something sweet and remembered that I was close to it so decided to pop in. Definitely a little confusing when you walk in as you're not really sure where to go or where to stand for both dining in and takeout but I promptly figured it out. I ordered a few baked goods to go and a small cold brew and let me tell you that the coffee was DELICIOUS as were both the palmier and the linzer cookie ... literally had to stop myself from eating them all because they were that good! I'll definitely be back to dine in and try lunch.

Yelp
Bought Kish was not warm and was not fresh It was around 8 pm It used to be very good place Maybe because I arrived at 8 pm But it should not be like that at all

Yelp
FOOD We ordered a whole Chicken Parisien sandwich to-go, and it was ready within fifteen minutes. It was delicious-- the chicken, bacon, mayo, and cheddar meshed well wonderfully together with a rich, umami taste. La Madeleine is one of our favorite places to visit for fast casual dining, and it lives up to our expectations every time! (Especially their bakery items that are great for get-togethers or parties) SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly. There are two different counters to order-- one for dining in (left) and one for carry-out (right). AMBIANCE There are a variety of tables available throughout the store for 2s, 4s, and more. The decor is neatly organized and fits the theme. PARKING There is ample parking available in the lot in front of the establishment that is shared with neighboring stores.

Yelp
Hopefully you get lucky . Do not go at lunch on weekends. Over toasted, overcooked, bland. A waste of money.

Piyarat P.

Yelp
Sooo good. I love to have breakfast and croissants here, service is nice. The atmosphere is very good. It gives a feeling like being in France.
google avatar

Yelp
A little unorganized. Staff was not very helpful to us first-timers - even after we said we didn't know how this worked. Maybe we just caught the wrong shift, or they're so used to regulars they don't reach out to ask if help is needed, or they are just tired of their jobs... ‍ That being said, I loved the decor. It felt like a cozy, warm, "underground" cafe with a touch of library/study tones which invited one to sit and linger - alone, maybe to read while eating; or with friends, to chat and visit over comforting food... And we loved the food. The eggs, where applicable, were light and fluffy. The dishes flavourful, and the dish selection was varied. This was also where the not knowing how this place worked kind of bit us. What I ordered was apparently on the "cafeteria line" and therefore was given to me immediately at the cash register after paying. My husband's meal was made to order, so it came out to our table a good bit later. If I wanted to eat my food hot, I had to start eating right away while my husband sat and waited for his food. Or, I could wait for him and then eat my food cold. I don't understand, their knowing his food would take a bit longer, (and the fact we were together) why they didn't just wait and bring all our food out together when his was ready. Is this a French Cafe thing I just don't about? We would definitely come back for the food and atmosphere. The staff? We would hope to encounter a more friendly, helpful group the next time around...

Yelp
Súper cozy and friendly staff. A nice retreat for lunch by the fire on a cold December Day

Yelp
I got baked potato soup, French dip and crème brûlée. Holy moly it was sooo good. The crème brûlée was fantastic. The store is very French rustic, super cute. And the manager was very very nice.

Sharon T.

Yelp
We've been going to La Madeleine many years and this is the first time I've ever felt need to leave a bad review. The management may have changed or something but the last 2 times we've been there the soup was lukewarm, spinach quiche lukewarm also, water glasses weren't out and they offered plastic cup. Just in general not the same.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
My experience at this establishment was disappointing from the start. Upon entering, I found myself navigating the ordering process without any help from the staff--only another customer stepped in to assist. The staff's demeanor was quite unwelcoming, and the food was just average at best. The ambience was nothing special either. Overall, I can't recommend this place due to the rude service I encountered.
google avatar

Alyssa K.

Yelp
The food is excellent, I can't comment on the ambience because I'm only doing takeout, I feel like the service is good. However, I think the prices are extremely high for what you get. There's no reason why a small takeout container of soup should be as expensive as it is. It's terrific, don't get me wrong, but it's not a good value

Yelp
So Disappointing! I've been eating at La Madeleine for years. We stopped in to grab a chicken ceaser salad and a cup of french onion soup. The romaine lettuce was limp and I'm not sure what kind of chicken I tasted. It certainly was not the yummy white poached chicken breast I remembered. Very dissatisfied and out $40. Plus dollars.
google avatar

Jay P.

Yelp
Let me start with a positIve: this is one of my favorite local breakfast spots; it has a good ambience and great prices (better than most competitors). However, this place is dirty. The tables are not clean and are filled with crumbs, as the windows, too. Also, customer service especially from the gentlemen who's takes the food orders in the morning is terrible; he's unfriendly, hard to understand, and doesn't seem to care to be there. He is off putting. Also, the food and drink/coffee temperature aren't hot. Yes, this place can get busy and have a high volume of people (after 9am), and that might be a reasoning for the accumulated dirt, lukewarm food and testy service, but if the restaurant is serious about improving and holding it to its brand, changes need to be made such as: + Hire more employees so they're not spread too thin + Replace the gentlemen at the front who's taking food orders in the morning with someone who's happy to be there, positive and, inviting. This gentlemen is the first opinion and introduction to the restaurant and his lack of interest, care, and unfriendly attitude spoils the experience of the place from the get go. + Lastly, have a routine and scheduled clean ups. Perhaps with additional (quality) hires these changes can be made, but until then, this place needs work. * Because I care about the uniqueness of La Madeleine I write this 2nd (stronger) review. I've included pictures as examples, too. If changes are made, I'll be happy to remove this review, but until then, this my assessment.

Coco O.

Yelp
They have a much better system for online ordering now and it's been a better experience. Thanks for making improvements to the operations.

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Rude staff, making fun of my accent while pretending to be French. Way to be inclusive.

Michael N.

Yelp
This bakery is beautiful and the pastries are delicious , I haven't tried the full menu, but everything has been delicious so far , quick service and friendly staff

Yelp
Very rude person name Daniella works here She messed up my order for 3 meals to take out. I called her after I got home she never apologized and said come back and get the right stuff. I said it's too far . Then she all of the sudden used the familiar excuse saying she didn't understand me and yelled and very rudely hung up the phone on me. All she had to do was apologize and be understanding. It was very disrespectful and stressful because my quests dinner was ruined. I will make sure to contact the main office .

Yelp
I went to this place for breakfast because a friend said it was good, order some food and sat down . Then i saw a little mouse running under our table , couldnt take any picture cuz it happened really fast, At first i thought it was my imagination but told and employee and she ignored what i told her. A moment later other people saw them and told the manager and he was acting like whatever. I cant believe this is the first review about this.

Yelp
Parking: there is a ton of parking! It is located in a shopping center, near the container store! It is in the corner of the mall strip. Seating: there is a ton of tables and seats! I like how there are different areas, away from other people. You can enjoy your conversation without feeling so exposed. The French vibe is very cute! Food: there is a variety of things on the menu! I like their choices of soup and sandwiches. My friends did not like their hot chocolate, they said it just tasted like warm milk. Bathroom: there are bathrooms in the back. The ladies room has two stalls. The fun part is they teach you French in the bathroom! Haha Price: I think it's a good price for what you get. Service: our cashier was very nice and patient! :)

Yelp
I went at 7pm on a Wednesday and got a bowl of corn chowder. The soup was cold. For over $7, I could get a whole tub of soup from grocery stores that tastes much better...

Amy D.

Yelp
I've been coming to this restaurant for years and I can't understand the bad reviews. I love coming here. The food is delicious and there's a big variety. Today the young lady who greeted me was kind, as well as was the man who made my salad. As others have said, the first time I came here I didn't know what to expect either. But I stood back and watched others to learn that it was cafeteria style, not waitress service. I find that how we treat others often dictates how they respond to us. I never come here expecting people to cater to me. I've always gotten smiles back when I enter with a smile. This La Madeleine is also a great place to come if you're eating alone because there's plenty of seating in different little rooms, and the ambiance is very cozy.

Yelp
Was actually so good got the salad n croissant n strawberry crepe yum pls make one in Frederick Md

Yelp
My husband has fond memories of eating at La Madeleine so he treated me to lunch! I've never been to one, but it's a cute fast casual spot. I ordered the chicken Parisian with tomato basil pasta salad and my husband ordered the Chicken Riviera with a cup of tomato basil soup. We split everything so we could try it all. The food was great and came out super fast. The whole sandwich and a side is pretty hearty so I would recommend ordering the half sandwich and side. The pastries looked good and I will definitely order one next time.
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
Came her for lunch for the first time. Had half a French dip and a fresh cranberry and pecan salad The food was great, the atmosphere quaint and was a great lunch. The only negative was the male cashier was abrupt and rude. Work on his public service attitude and you would have had 5 stars.
google avatar

Cassy W.

Yelp
Came here and got the avocado toast, with a side of bacon and an iced mocha. The food was okay, but the mocha tasted like chocolate milk and did not even seem to have espresso in it. The interior seemed a little run-down overall and ordering was a little difficult as the person working the register had a hard time understanding anything I asked for. I would probably not come back, but it was not horrible for a relatively cheap breakfast.

John N.

Yelp
This morning 12/20/23; my wife hosted a Ladies' Holiday Breakfast here at La Madeleine and we were impressed. Our host Jamila met our expectations and every need. The venue, food, and service will bring us back. Thank you again Jamila for all that you did. John K Nusbaum Reston.

Yelp
This place has been on a slow and steady decline since the pandemic. The food quality has gone down as the prices have gone up. Now they are also charging an 8% "commodity fee" on any order. Most places want to keep customers happy - la Madeline it seems wants to chase them away. You get less and poorer quality food then you used to get for higher prices and now a hefty fee on top of that as well. I won't be back ever again, I'll go somewhere that values their customers and doesn't try to fleece them. Also the "commodity fee" is not posted anywhere, which if this was in DC, would be against the law.

Olga L.

Yelp
This is the worst La Madeleine ever! The man who takes orders (blue hair) wears dirty glows with holes! He doesn't change them when he's serving food or takes payments. Kitchen entrance is located next to the restroom. If I saw kitchen before our order I would never ever stayed there! Kitchen is dirty! Restroom is unbelievable! It's wet everywhere! Covered with puddles, smells horrible! The same man was giving us somebody's checks to leave a good review for a slice of cake! What a shame!
google avatar

Meg C.

Yelp
I has always loved this place. They are on a skeleton crew for COVID and doing their best! I had hoped to find some macarons but the chocolate tart was still delicious. I always recommend the tomato soup it's amazing! The interior is cute and quiet with a fireplace. The staff is good but could be a bit friendlier. Easy parking out front.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
I order from this location a lot and have been coming here since I was a kid but lately I've noticed that the quality of the meals have definitely gone downhill. The crust of the quiche is a bit soggy and the pesto pasta which has been an absolute favorite is completely bland in flavor. I'm not sure if it's because they use less sauce so the pasta is more on the dry side?.. But the staff also disregarded my requests. The soups however, are still delicious and on par. My favorite is the tomato and baked potato soup. Might be ordering only those from now on.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
The good: 1. Any baked goods 2. Chicken La Madeleine is amazing. Balsamic-marinated chicken topped with creamy wild mushroom sauce!! 3. The potato galette. I'm not a big potato guy, but this is super tasty. It's like a latke on steroids. A potato cake with Parmesan, green onions & spices baked golden brown and crispy on the outside. The ok: 1. Coffee isn't bad. It's not that great either. The bad: 1. Bacon is over cooked. Every time and every location. WTF?!? 2. Service is almost always slow.

Yelp
Wonderful employees. They made the experience wonderful and worked hard. Kid friendly and good food. Everyone enjoyed it.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
While the food was amazing, my mother and I had never encountered such horrible service. The cashier was incredibly demeaning to my mother, who, although she has an accent, speaks nearly perfect english. His tone and the faces he would make at her while she was ordering are unacceptable, and they make me wonder if he had ever encountered an immigrant before. The 2 stars are solely due to the food, because I would rate the service 0/5.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
First timer. Lemon tart: 1 Star. NOT memorable, bland, and simple. It does taste like lemon but it needs more. A friend had the creme brûlée cheesecake and it was not so good. Both have unique flavors that were competing and both are lost in translation. Will not repeat!
google avatar

Piyawan L.

Yelp
Food was horrible! Today I ordered Custom Eggs, and it turn out to be a pool of oil, disgusting! I used all napkins to soak the oil out, hope at least I can eat some but no! Ended up trash them all. Very disappointed!

Mehdi H.

Yelp
Super simple. Wouldn't come here again. Poor quality coffee. My espresso wasn't good at all.
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
American Breakfast was so good! Staff nice and helpful. I havent had good croissants in a while and this hit the spot. Generous American breakfast. Pleasantly surprised that bacon was not deep fried. as well as the sausages. Cappucino was ok not strong enough for me. Spacious dining area with outdoor tables. Will return!
google avatar

Hoss C.

Yelp
Extremely rude service, from the cashier, to the cleanup staff, everyone was too busy to provide basic customer service, in an empty restaurant... hard pass next time. In this area, people are generally very kind and to see this level of rudeness was just so jarring, especially when the expectation was to have a quick getaway to have brunch with a friend. I've never been to France, but I hope its nothing like this.

Ben B.

Yelp
Delicious food, relaxing atmosphere, and friendly employees. The coffee was strong, just how it should be. I like how they (mostly) avoid single-use plastic.

Dan F.

Yelp
You have to self-serve yourself to the menu, and then request audience with the counter girl/boy to place your order. They don't come to you - that is the French way and you'll just have to get over it . The croissant was the best in the business. Last time I had croissant this light was in the Netherlands.

Lilly V.

Yelp
it's a weird system they have and no heads up whatsoever. The food, pastr and coffee are good, lots of good stuff to choose from, but they have no service! Tables were dirty, we had to come back to find utensils, napkins, and we've ordered the food at the register after we were sitting for someone to come for a long time. It was our first time, didn't know what to expect. We are thinking about coming back, but not sure yet. Mixed feelings!
google avatar

Christina Y.

Yelp
Why do y'all even have an "Order Notes" section if you never even read it? This is the 3rd time La Madeleine did not include bread with my soup order.

Lola T.

Yelp
First time visiting this location while in Reston running an errand. The man taking my order was very kind and thoughtful to prepare my order efficiently; I think he might have been the manager. Great attitude that stood out to me as a customer!
google avatar

Susan H.

Yelp
La Madeleine is A-Ok. I hadn't been to this location in years and had wanted to visit again...but so many restaurants so little time. The thing that finally got us here was the coupon we got in the mail for $3 off our meals, which was a great incentive to go. We were here on a Sunday night around 5 p.m. The place wasn't busy so we were able to order our meals without having a wait. I had forgotten how the ordering system worked and the young woman at the counter explained it to us. She was friendly and patient. I wish that they had their menu on the wall as it would have made things easier. Instead, you are handed a menu which puts some pressure on you to decide quickly. Good thing I looked online so I knew what I wanted. My husband had taken a look but he forgot the name of the sandwich he wanted. Once he figured it out, we placed our order and gave her our coupon. We were then given a number to put on our table. It was rather creative---a wooden spoon on a stand. I ordered the French dip sandwich while my husband got a cup of French lentil soup plus a chicken croissant salade sandwich. We shared a bottle of Perrier water to drink. With the coupon, all this cost $20 + change. I liked the roll that the French dip sandwich was on as it had a nice crust on it. It was just right as it gave enough crunch without being very hard. The meat was good quality. I also liked that they used a mild provolone cheese on it. What I didn't like was that the au jus for dipping was very bland with little flavor. My husband really liked the French lentil soup saying that it had a generous amount stock in it plus the broth had good flavor. He didn't really care for his sandwich. He said that they put too much mayo on it. In addition to the chicken salad, the sandwich had a tomato slice and some lettuce. Plus he ended up adding some salt and pepper to it. We don't regret going but at the same time we're not in any rush to return.

Yelp
I mean who doesn't like la Madeleine! The coffee is decent, interior is beautiful, the menu always has new and seasonal items, and boi that unlimited jam/bread station is simple, fresh, and delicious! The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. I can't remember the exact name, but I got their cranberry turkey sandwich. It was super delicious and made to order.

Cassandra C.

Yelp
Excellent service and great food! Always delicious on any selection that I've made. The pastries are to die for!
google avatar

Alvarez S.

Yelp
I use to come to this place from time to time because I enjoy the environment and the food of course. Today, I went with my wife and the only negative was the male cashier person who was very rude and hard to be understood. The manager in charge was very helpful as well as Mercedes the server. I like to return again.
google avatar

Lorenna P.

Yelp
I don't understand why so many bad reviews! I just moved in here from California and I think this place is spectacular! The BEST quiche I ever had ( also tomato soup) , very sweet and helpful staff and gorgeous decor! Honestly, I think sometimes people just complain way too much for the minimum things. Life is beautiful and this place it is as well!
google avatar

Abraham K.

Yelp
My wife got violently ill with food poisoning after eating at this location. It had been a long time since being at this location but the quiche and crepe were less than desirable. My wife's illness reflects the lack of freshness and safety of the food here.
