Labors of Love in the French Countryside

"La Maison Pavie provides a picture of what Brittany must have looked like during the Middle Ages. The original owners meticulously restored a 15th-century building — the birthplace of explorer Auguste Pavie — treasuring such features as the wattle-and-daub walls, massive exposed beams, and even a “pattes de lion” fireplace. For current owner and your host Sophie Bannier, this boutique bed and breakfast in Dinan is no less a personal passion." - Mark Fedeli

La Maison Pavie, Dinan, Brittany, France - Explore & Book

"You’re never far from history at La Maison Pavie. It occupies a 15th-century house opposite a honey-hued basilica in central Dinan; wander inside and you’ll find ancient wattle-and-daub walls, stone hearths and delightfully wonky floors. Even the furnishings take their inspiration from the building’s past, with the travels of famed explorer Auguste Pavie (born within its walls in 1847) forming a continuous decorative thread. Oriental antiques are dotted around the 5 rooms and suites, all named after Far Eastern cities visited by Pavie, and Asian figurines preside over the dining table. But don’t be fooled into thinking a stay here means stepping back in time: this is one stylish B&B indeed, stuffed full of 21st-century comforts and contemporary classics from the likes of Philippe Starck and Paola Navone. Dinan itself is one of Brittany’s gems, a busy market town whose half-timbered buildings, cobbled lanes and medieval ramparts look like they’ve been lifted straight from a swashbuckling Hollywood blockbuster. There’s a pretty port to potter around, fabulous restaurants and boutiques to indulge yourself in, and beautiful beaches within striking distance. At the end of the day, head back to the B&B and sink into a fireside sofa, then slip upstairs to your raftered room, where snazzy showers and heavenly beds await. We loved it, and we can’t wait to return. Highs An imaginative fusion of old and new: perspex ‘Ghost’ chairs sit by carved tables, sleek shower heads hang from gnarled beams, and the lounge’s 18th-century panelling is painted a striking petrol-blueTasty breakfast goodies include just-baked bread, sweet brioches and excellent coffee, and you can pre-book 4-course feasts for dinnerFantastic hosts, who know when to chat and when to be discreetGreat-value rates that include plenty of little extras - free tea and coffee, bottled water and delicious Breton biscuits, even a pre-paid pass for a secure car park nearbyThere’s a lovely little garden for summer drinks (bring your own wine and they’ll chill it for you) Lows You’ll need to negotiate a steep, narrow staircase to reach rooms on the upper floors, though manager Ghislain will help with luggageBest suited to couples - there are no twin beds, and the open-plan bathrooms mean you’ll need to be on very good terms with your travelling companion The house's period charm makes for a few creaks and groans - plus occasional bumped headsYou can hear the church bells, but they only toll from 8am to 7pmCentral Dinan is tricky to negotiate by car, with tight streets and a complicated one-way system that bamboozled our sat-nav" - Abi Dare

"Standing opposite the Basilique Saint-Sauveur, La Maison Pavie provides a picture of what Brittany must have looked like during the Middle Ages. Set in a meticulously restored 15th-century building, this boutique bed and breakfast features historic architectural details inside and out, such as wattle-and-daub walls, massive exposed beams, and even a “pattes de lion” fireplace, along with all the modern comforts you’d expect. Each one is inspired by a town visited by the famous French explorer Auguste Pavie, who was born in the house in 1847. Guests can enjoy their lavish breakfast, including traditional Breton galettes and home-made jams, inside the dining room or in a romantic walled garden." - Tablet Hotels

Sweet dreams, silent nights, awoken by birds, surrounded by the aroma of high-end Breton soaps and lotions, and immersed in thoughtful architecture and Asian inspired decor. A fabulous experience with very caring and welcoming hosts (Léa and Catherine) and a delectable breakfast spread. I especially liked the Saint Malo yogurt, local fruit jams and salted butter caramel spread, and Mariage Frères teas. The sitting room was very enjoyable for reading or relaxing with a cup of tea. What a find!! Merci for a perfect stay in the Champassack Room!

Google
The best hotel of our holiday. Good location right in the centre of Dinan and lovely comfy room. Breakfast buffet was also excellent. But what really made it was the lovely lady running the place who was so friendly and helpful - and her english was excellent.|Word of warning - we were on the top floor which was up an old and wonky spiral staircase which some people might struggle with.

Not enough superlatives to describe this gem of a place a beautifully restored 15th century city house. Hotel is in front of Saint Sauveur church and you can’t beat the location. The suite was very spacious, with all the amenities you would find in an upscale establishment. The staircase was quirky and yet you have to expect this when you are in such environment. The breakfast was exquisite and very varied in a very large dining room. What makes the difference between good and excellent? In this case Ghyslain an extremely friendly host who spoke a perfect English and who not only carried out suitcases but also helped us get to the parking which is available to guests at no charge. He even recommended a crêperie not that you have no choice however, always trust your host. Ghyslain you are a gem thank you for making our stay exceptional.

Search no further for a unique and friendly place to stay in Dinan! From the moment Jerome opened the door, we felt welcomed and at home. He helped us with our bags as we followed him up the stairs to see where we would stay. The colors and the decor that they used were so refined, and elegant! The view out the window was breathtaking!||It was quiet, private, however there was an area where you could meet other visitors for glass of wine if you’d like. The breakfast was delicious and healthy. I highly recommend this place to stay if you are visiting Dinan! We will definitely be back.

Google
Quite possibly the best hotel I have stayed in. Was here with my partner for a night and could not recommend it enough. Everything was exceptional and I could not say a bad word about the place. Ghislain was fantastic in his kindness and in giving us advice on what to do/where to go in Dinan. Really made us feel like we were at home. Would recommend to all

We LOVED this hotel. We were traveling in France and mostly stayed in conventional hotels so this place definitely made an impression on us. The building is, as one can see, ancient so it is very much typical of most of medieval Dinan. Our room, however, had every modern convenience and was exceedingly comfortable. Ghislane was a perfect host and has done an excellent job keeping the charm and character of the structure but updating the rooms to be both beautiful and functional. We stayed in the most difficult and least accessible room (one almost needs both hands and feet to get up the stairs) but the effort was WELL worth it. If you book the Luang Prabang room, definitely accept Ghislane’s offer to deliver your luggage to and from the room. We would recommend the hotel to anyone who really wants to experience old France and feel real history along with warm hospitality and a delicious breakfast.

We were able to walk from the train station to La Maison Pavie. It was maybe a 20 min walk but would of been shorter if we had follow signs for the "Basiique St. Sauveur". The church is right across from La Maison Pavie. We stayed on the top floor in the largest suite (Angkor Room). The room has a nice view from the window which I moved the chairs so I could admire it. The room has a very nice modern shower outside the bed area and the toilet is separate with a very tall heavy cement? door. The staircase is very tiny and you do have to hold on the ropes going up the steps. We were fine but carrying our suitcases was a bit challenging. Ghislain helped my DH with my suitcase. He was a very kind host. The breakfast was nice and served in a community kitchen. ||This was a great location and within walking distance to the stores and restaurants. IMO, better than staying near the river. ||There is a nice walk through the country side to next town called Leron. (About a hr. walk) and Leron has a beautiful abbey. Surprisingly, there is a public restroom next to the abbey. It was one of my favorite things we did in Dinan. ||||||| |We loved our stay here. Thank you.

Wonderful 16th century building sympathetically and stylishly repurposed as a guest house. Very quiet and peaceful. Everything was superb from the aesthetically pleasing large rooms, comfortable bed, great buffet breakfast. Ghislaine and Katherine made us very welcome. Exceptional

Yelp
Perfect location for touring the city on foot. Close to everything. Room was so clean and comfortable. Breakfast is in included. Parking is included and it is in a garage around the block. Keep in mind that this place has some serious stairs. Tiny little adorable stairs that wouldn't be great for everyone. I highly recommend this place!
