"Like Antigua Casa Crespo in Madrid, La Manual is where you want to go for authentic Spanish espadrilles. With roots that go back to the Spanish Civil War, it’s really no wonder the handmade slip-ons, slides, lace-ups, and wedges have amassed a cult-like following among locals. Tourists tend to get a little overwhelmed at the sight of floor-to-ceiling cubbies packed with shoes, but at under $50 a pop, leaving with multiple pairs is totally justifiable. "

"La Manual Alpargatera, a living room–size espadrille workshop, is such a flurry of activity that it reminds you of a Disney animation—the fairy godmothers scurrying about getting Cinderella ready for the ball. Or, in your case, a stylish day of city strolling. The store sits proudly down an old-town side street between the Cathedral and Las Ramblas. It’s traditional-looking, inside and out, and a real institution on the historic Barcelona shopping scene." - Gemma Askham

Google
Amazing customer service. Great experience, don't be fooled by other shoe stores. These espadrilles are authentic and custom made if you don't see the color or style you like. We bought 8 pairs and prices were good.

Very nice selection and various price points. Gentleman in the back area working his craft

My favourite shop in all of Barcelona. Exceptional customer service, extensive range, or can custom make. We purchased 8 pairs & found their prices actually cheaper than others. A cherished holiday memory & beautiful unique & comfortable shoes.

After doing some research, I wanted to go to La Manual Alpargatera for a unique and traditional purchase. Aurora was so patient as I selected the right pair and honestly left with two pairs because I was so happy with not only the feel of the shoe but also the service. Actually, she showed me how to lace up the shoes and I got a pair that the maker just finished which was truly a cherry on top. If you are looking to shop, then stop here for the experience. A short walk from La Boqueria and rich with history.

Google
One of those historical artesanal shop selling the typical Spanish style of shoes known in all the world. It's so beautiful inside too! Ideal to buy here your presents for yourself or loved ones from Spain with love. I bought the Dali style !

Google
Today I had the worst experience in this store. To the female sales person who clearly smokes a pack or two a day. You are seriously mean. I get it, you are really over having to deal with customers, but come on, at least be courteous.

Eunie Linden

Google
The shop is inviting and the employees are kind. I bought 3 pairs and wish I bought more. The shoes are very comfortable and look great. I highly recommend this great store.

Google
The staff are very friendly and explain in many languages. It is a place where tourists visit Manoi, so the tax refund process is smooth. However, compared to its reputation, the designs of men's espadrilles are not diverse, and there are cases where there are no sizes. Price is reasonable. Worth a visit if you're in the area, but you don't have to travel for the purpose of visiting it.

Yelp
LOVEEEEE! the whole family is super helpful and kind! shoes are very comfortable and well priced (remember to bring a pic of ur passport for tax refund)

Yelp
Handmade esperadilles shop. They had many selections and various prices. The shop attendant was super helpful in determining sizing and if it was correct for my foot. Shoes are very comfortable.

Yelp
The store opens at 10am and I was here around 11am on Thursday 12/14/2023. I was the only customer, but I am not complaining. They were making espadrilles inside the store and one of them came up as I entered the store. She was able to speak English as well and I tried on two sizes of the design that I liked. I wear mens US 11, she recommended EU 44. Tried it on, but I do have a wide feet and it was too tight. She did mention that over time, espadrilles will stretch out, however, I chose to go one size up to EU 45. Fit perfect! Some of the designs were not available in my size but I was lucky enough to get the espadrilles that I liked. They are very comfortable and reasonably priced for hand-made shoes. Can get tax refund at the airport as well! But I recommend to get the refund to the credit card if paying with a card. The store must be very popular to Korean tourists as well. Store owner was able to speak somewhat Korean! It was interesting but yet good shopping experience.

Yelp
This is such a lovely shoe shop in Barcelona, traditional style and friendly staff. Highly recommended (but busy depending on when you go).

Yelp
My advice to you is arrive here early or don't at all. They observe siesta, so I came early to be there for reopening after siesta. I waited for about 30 minutes and was the first one waiting. They have such an astounding reputation. Soon, more people came trickling near me. Once they opened, it. was. absolute. madness. Some people weren't so gracious and cut me, but I don't like to lose my cool, so I just shot a look of contempt and moved on. They give you a number, sort of like at a deli counter, and that's the order in which you'll be helped. So you better pick out what shoes you like quickly! I chose a few espadrilles I liked, but the tricky thing is I'm usually a 5.5, and they don't make half sizes. The woman was accommodating and helped find a perfect fit, since no one shoe fits the same. I found my favorite espadrilles and left happy. Beware, this store is not for people who are claustrophobic and dislike crowds. It's like Black Friday!

Yelp
I saw great reviews on this place and decided to check it out while I was in Barcelona. I can definitely tell you I wasn't disappointed! I got two pairs of espadrilles from this place, one pair of flats (12 euros) and a pair of wedged heels (19 euros). You can also see someone sitting there hand-make the shoes right before your eyes. The sales experience was really great too, because it was one on one. You go in, you get a number, and when you get called there is a salesperson that is with you the whole time to help you find your perfect size, give you suggestions, etc. They will stay with you until you are ready to check out. Definitely check this place out if you are looking for a fair priced, unique pair of espadrilles. I went down the street to look at costs in a similar store and it was maybe double if not more. So you're getting your money's worth here for sure!

Yelp
This delightful espadrille superstar is an Instagram dream. Jammed with colorful selections of espadrilles, the staff are accommodating and friendly. With so many to drool over, it's hard to pick just one pair. It's a unique gift to bring back these comfortable and stylish shoes. Go, have a look and try them on!

Yelp
The lure of this place is the price (10 euros for a pair of basic flat espadrilles) and the fact that its handmade. Located in the gothic district (yelp address is entirely correct), this place is on a small street and easy to miss. However the owner sits outside making espadrilles to entice visitors to check it out. There were 3 people working that day (all related). They don't move onto the next customer until the customer they're helping is done and ready to pay. Therefore you just sit there and wait your turn. I'd recommend you know what shoes you want to try on so you're ready to tell them what you want. They speak limited English but I got lucky and the granddaughter of the owner was able to help me out since I had a flight that evening and limited time to try to explain what I was looking for. I ended up buying 2 pairs - a basic flat one and one that had two tones that allows you to wrap a ribbon around your ankle. Both purchases were around $45. She told me that the shoes stretch out so I went with my normal European size (the size I usually purchase for high heels). Overall very happy with my purchase and I might come back next year and will def pay this shop a visit. Also makes for great presents.

Yelp
What a fun experience. We showed up at 4:20.... about 10minutes after they reopen after lunch. We ended up being 18th in line (numbers are handed out as you enter) only took about 20 minutes until our turn, enough time to look at all the styles and decide which ones we liked best. My son ended up with a handsome pair of men's shoes for €50 and my daughter with large feet (size 41-42) hand only a few styles to choose from but fell in love with the ones she got anyway at €38. They fit them to your feet and you can expect a snug fit as they will stretch out a bit with wear. standard style was €12 but so many cute styles. Love that they are handmade and you can always have them made to order if they do not have the color you choose if you are willing to wait a day or two for pick up. Great souvenir that you get to wear and enjoy.

Yelp
La Manual Alpargatera is a Barcelona staple, and you must go! Walls of unique, hand crafted shoes and accessories await. I stopped by on Thursday mid-morning, and while it was we busy, it was nowhere near the weekend mayhem that likely ensues. The staff was able to assist quickly and extremely accommodating. It felt like a family business. I walked in with the intention of buy 1 pair of espadrilles for my MIL and walked out with 3 and a daring straw bag. As I type this now, I am headed back for a fourth pair. If it fights, buy it in every color

Yelp
A must visit place on your trip to Barcelona. Reasonable priced hand made shoes. Loved being able to watch several of the local women making shoes. Wide selection of color, sizes, and styles of espadrilles. Credit cards are accepted and they also have English speaking staff. Would highly recommend

Yelp
Espadrilles is once again supertrendy this summer (at least in Norway where I come from) and instead of buying a pricy pair of low quality in home you should spend your money on something authentic, handmade, and from its country of origin. This is the place to go! When entering the place for the first time the whole prosess might seem a bit confusing. There is no self-serve here. Just go to the cashier, get a number and keep your size and preferred shoe-design in mind and your dedicated salesperson will find them for you from the impressive wall of shoes. If you are, like me, a Scandinavian girl with big feet prepare to have less girly deigns to choose from. Be also aware that your salesperson will try to force you to try a pair 5 sizes to small as a woman can not have a size 41 (EU). After all I ended up with a fantastic pair in plain green and a funny and authentic experience to recommend to everybody i know. Well worth the time and the money!

Yelp
I bought 2.pairs of espadrilles at the store about a week ago. One pair has a patchwork top and the other a glitter combination of pink, blue & gold hearts. I love them as they are comfortable and so beautifully unique. I wear a US size 7 and bought size 38 in European sizes so be sure you purchase the correct European size The 2 pairs only costed about $50 USD which is so reasonable and I also purchased several key chains with dangling mini-size espadrilles. I look forward to their starting an online store as friends of mine want to make purchases too without traveling to Spain !!!

Yelp
All the reviews telling you to stop into La Manual Alpargatera while on a Gothic Quarter shopping spree are NOT to be overlooked. It's everything this flats-loving shoe-addict could want. Comfy, hand-made, and in all sorts of colors and totally affordable. We purchased two of the more simple pairs in bright colors, a pair for my husband, a lace up fancy pair for me, and a unique pair that was almost boot like all for 135 Euros. The salesperson was very patient in helping us size them just right and teaching me how to lace them up.

Yelp
Read up on the web about where to go for hand made shoes before coming. They seem to be the most popular place go to for your Spanish made espradrilles. I was not disappointed. There are many styles to choose from and the prices are better than other "hand made" shoe stores. The girl working there was nice and even showed me how to tie one of the shoes with ribbons the traditional way. I tried about 7 or 8 different shoes (ranging in sizes) and she was patient with helping me with them. The shoes felt very comfortable when I walked around in the store with them, some styles were true to size while some I had to go down a size. I got 3 for myself and then another 3 pairs as gifts for family. They give you a little sheet about their history (the first "fashion" espradrilles store after the civil war in 1940). I also saw the shoes being made there which is really nice to see and experience!

Yelp
Beautiful espadrilles in a wide assortment of patterns and colors. Great prices! After reading the reviews on Yelp I had to make a trip here. I purchased two pairs (one flat in a Barcelona print and the other in a slight raised heel in stripe) and can't wait to wear them this summer!

Yelp
This is a must visit spot in Barcelona. At first, I saw plenty of people on naver blogging about this place. I went on a busy Saturday afternoon, but it didn't take too long (less than half an hour) after I grabbed my ticket and one of the staff dedicated his attention to me. The prices are very affordable and I've received a lot of compliments wearing their espadrilles back in Toronto.
google avatar

Ruggy J.

Yelp
Word on the street is La Manual Alpargatera makes the best espadrilles in the world. I have no frame of reference being that I typically wear Nikes, but so far I have to imagine the claim runs true. The process for getting a pair is somewhat maddening. It's like a meat market for footwear. But once you've got a dedicated salesperson assisting you, it's quite accommodating. And the shoes? Well, I've received nothing but compliments every time I wear them around New York City. For $35, that's a small price to pay for a one of a kind, handmade pair of shoes. The hours are a little funky, but so are most of Barcelona's shops, restaurants, and cafes.

Yelp
Great selection of shoes ^_^ I bought several pairs of shoes from different stores, when I was in Barcelona, & 1 of my fave pairs turned out to be the low espadrille wedges I bought from La Manual Alpargatera. Basically, I was looking for a somewhat fashionable pair to wear that won't make my feet hurt in different places, after walking 3, 4 hours or so, & the wedges I bought from La Manual turned out to be that pair. My only regret is that I didn't buy these lovely black espadrille wedges sooner, so I was pretty much stuck wearing comfy yet unfashionable shoes throughout my trip, hehe. It's true what the other reviewers say, that they won't help you until they're done helping someone get their pair of shoes, at La Manual. That's fine, though. When I asked for a specific pair of wedges, the girl got me the pair I wanted in my size, in 2 different colors, plus another pair that was somewhat similar in design, shown to me as an option. She was really nice. My pair of low espadrille wedges, I only bought for €18, I think it was on sale, but as I Google the history of the store (it dates back to the 1940's, wartime), I'm finding out that others managed to get 3 pairs for a total of €20. If I had more luggage space, I definitely would've bought maybe 2, 3 pairs more from LMA. Love their shoes. They also sell purses, belts, handmade leather stuff, I think. As with any pair of shoes, not all pairs I tried, I felt would turn out to be comfy after walking a few hours, so if you're looking for walking shoes, make sure you get a good pair that won't leave your feet bleeding in specific places. This was what happened to me. Hehe.

Yelp
Poor service in addition to being extremely crowded. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait too long after I got my number to be helped. However, the salesperson couldn't be bothered when I tried asking if they had other styles in leather other than the few pairs of shoes I held in my hands. As the store is extremely crowded, it's not easy to browse so I wanted to double check with the salesperson that there weren't other styles in leather I had missed accidentally. This salesperson (an Asian woman -- try to avoid her if you can) was extremely rude. Other salespeople looked to be friendlier though the service still looked hurried. FYI in case it's helpful -- La Manual only carries very few styles in leather. I personally much prefer wearing shoes lined with leather as it helps my feet breathe. (I unfortunately can't wear shoes with canvas linings for this reason.) I left promptly and ended up buying a gorgeous pair of espadrille wedges about a block or so away at Toni Pons. The shoes at Toni Pons looked much more stylish and in the end I'm glad that I didn't end up getting anything at La Manual!

Yelp
My wife and I spent 4 days in Barcelona and everyday we would walk by this shop not really knowing what a gem it was until one day we decided to walk in to see what all the fuss was all about. The place was pretty full, once we figured out that we needed a number to get service we were pleasantly surprised by all the different styles of shoes they had and now affordable they were. We ended up getting 4 pairs of shoes and the quality seems to be pretty decent. If your in the area I would definitely recommend stopping by to take a look.

Yelp
If you're looking for an authentic pair of espadrilles while visiting Barcelona this is the spot to visit. Unlike the other stores along the same street, this store offered the most fair and reasonable prices and so much variety! When we first walked in there were several others already in the store that were being helped. I had to wait my turn, because the staff only helps one customer at a time which is nice because you get the undivided attention you need! After about 10 minutes of waiting they finally came to assist me. One of the ladies working there was kind of enough to to bring me out several pairs to try and gave me an honest option on what looked good and what didn't. I walked out with two pairs of wedges, both 49 euros each. The flats were only 12 euros which is such an amazing steal! Loved my experience here and will visit again next time I'm in Barcelona.

Yelp
If you're like me and tend to fall for local wares while on vacation, then you know it's sometimes challenging to find where where the locals actually shop for their stuff. In the case of our time in Barcelona, I noticed all the cool kids were rocking espadrilles like it was Miami, a la '80s Sonny Crockett. Upon further research, I found out that espadrilles are actually from the Pyrenees area and are popular throughout Catalonia and the Basque Country. Next step, find an authentic local maker. Enter La Manual Alpargatera. In operation since the '40s, the store carries every color and style of espadrille imagineable. I chose a pair with a slight wedge and pretty stripes. Prices are reasonable and it's nice to buy local.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
So from cursory research, this is THE place espadrille shop in town -- if not all of Spain. Honestly you will see espadrilles everywhere in BCN, more varieties (probably made in China, wink) and for cheaper and it is not like you can not get some form of the espadrille in the US... BUT you get a cool reminder of your trip and bragging rights when someone compliments your handmade shoes. ;) Get a number from the window lady in the back, then browse until they call your number in Spanish. For the amt of limited shoe selection, it is amazing how busy this place is.
google avatar

Grace P.

Yelp
Such nice store owners! This is one of the older handmade espadrilles shops in Barcelona. They were closed on Sunday, but since it was the only day my brother could make it, they agreed to meet him there and allow him to shop while they did their weekend store cleaning. Basic handmade espadrilles start at 12€. The fancier materials, colors, styles go upwards of 45€. They will help you with sizing and the fit and also tell you a history of the shoes and the store, which makes it fun.

Fifi L.

Yelp
We visited the store when we were traveling in Barcelona. Thanks to the other yelpers' advice, we took the number at the counter right after we got there. It wasn't as crowded at that time so we were served in 5 min. It was me who wanted the shoes, but two of my kids joined and wanted to get some shoes from them too, so the lady was in and out of the back room several times trying to find the right size to fit us. We appreciate the service they provided and we love the shoes we got from them! Every time we wear them, it brings sweet memories of Barcelona!!

Yelp
Came mid morning during the week in January and we were the only customers! A salesperson took her time to help us try several styles. Bought two pairs! Great selection and service.

Yelp
As good as it gets. The shoes are a blast and handmade. So far so good. Now, when you go in go to the cashier on the right hand side and get a number right away. they will call your number and while you were waiting you picked out everything you want to try. The salespeople make all the chaos go away as they pay attention to you and what you need. Enjoy this experience.
google avatar

Chandra J.

Yelp
This is the specialty store in Barcelona to make wedges. They have a great variety of shorter and flat wedges with a handful of high platform models. The sales personnel will not speak to you until they have finished with the previous client, which can be annoying, but what is nice is that when he's taking care of you, he will not help anyone else. The prices are around 50-70 euros for ladies wedges. The quality is good, not great. Mine hurt my feet the first day and I think the leather is a bit rigid. The model is nonetheless beautiful.
google avatar

Debbie S.

Yelp
The best spot for espadrilles in Barcelona. There are other shops, but this is as authentic as it gets. I waked away with three pairs and am regretting not getting more.

Yelp
This place is fantastic - had a little difficulty bc I don't speak Spanish or Catalan but we still managed to communicate. Beautiful well made espadrilles at a reasonable price. Love this shop!

Vicky K.

Yelp
Great selection of shoes, especially espadrilles; very good service and very reasonable prices. Go early or right after siesta, because it gets crowded! If it's crowded, get a number at the cash register.
