I have never left a negative review for a restaurant. Also, we always leave 20%, and we did tonight too.
We've lived and traveled all over the world, and this was a terrible experience for fine dining. To the restaurant's credit, they comped some of our bill. At least for us, we are willing to pay for good food and a great experience, which wasn't provided tonight. We don't want a couple of comped cocktails, we want a great dinner experience.
We made reservations. Ten minute wait once we arrived...no problem whatsoever, as the place was busy. I want to reiterate, we are generally happy and positive people. A little wait or other issues, no problem!
Unfortunately, that's where the many problems started. Our hostess told us she would sit us at a table two feet from the door and right next to the bar. Mind you, it's about 10 degrees outside. Very cold. I asked if we could move tables, or wait longer for a table actually inside the place to open. Hostess coldly replies, "This is what we have available." Ok, more on that later.
We sit at the cold entrance-table. Wait 20 minutes without menus or even a simple acknowledgement from the waitstaff. The place is busy since it is Friday night, so people waiting for their table to open are standing around our table, leaving the door open to the 10 degree weather outside.
People are standing right next to us throughout our meal (our view was mostly people's backsides) and someone even sat at my seat when I went to the restroom. Wife had to tell her that she was sitting at our dinner table. Although I haven't been there in 10 years, Applebee's doesn't even sit you in the WAITING AREA. Come on.
As we wait, order and eat, we notice tables opening at the main area of the restaurant. "This is what we have available" becomes less and less believable as the dinner goes on.
Worse yet, our food was forgettable at a memorable price. Not terrible, but not great either. Oysters and wine were great, but the restaurant has little to do with that other than carrying it out.
Recommendation to the restaurant: get rid of the cold entrance table. It's that simple.
Recommendation to travelers looking for a good meal: if you arrive and they still have the cold entrance table immediately to your right upon entrance, politely leave and head on down to Brown Dog Pizza for a more enjoyable experience. Even if you don't sit there, the table is representative of the experience.
