La Maruca - López de Hoyos

"In keeping with the focus in its sister restaurants along the city’s Castellana and Velázquez streets, the region of Cantabria takes complete centre-stage here. The standout features in this spacious, contemporary eatery with its large windows looking out onto the street are the welcoming terrace to the rear and an unwavering focus on time-honoured Cantabrian cooking. The latter is based around quality ingredients and simply prepared dishes that retain a strong emphasis on detail. Specialities include anchovies, Santander-style fried squid, brandade fritters, stews (mountain stew and Lebaniego stew from the town of Liébana), and Cachopo, a typical dish combining steak, ham and cheese." - Michelin Inspector

Absolutely adore this restaurant. The food is phenomenal. The service is great. They have a lot of vegetarian options, which I really appreciate. And a great wine list. The people who work there are really warm and welcoming. Even though this restaurant is typically packed as it’s super popular, The staff make sure that you are given great service and great care.

This spot is a gem for anyone who loves real Spanish tapas. The tortilla española was just right—soft, slightly runny in the middle, and packed with flavor. No overcooked, dry eggs here—just smooth, perfectly balanced goodness. The croquetas were on another level. Both the fish and meat versions had the perfect crunch on the outside and a creamy, rich filling inside. The flavors were bold but not overpowering, making them impossible to stop eating. With a cozy atmosphere (though quite crowded I have to admit), this place is a must-visit for anyone craving good, well-executed tapas.

Food here is so good. And the place buzzing. Tortilla sublime - soft and sweet. Fish soup had perfectly tender fish pieces, prawns and clams within, lamb shoulder moist and with beautiful potatoes under. Cheese flan deleiciously light. Service at bar superb.

Beautiful food, we had the clamps and they were amazing good. Really big and fleshy. The hake looks and tastes super. The gluten free brownie also perfect And finally a restaurant that serves camomile tea with real flowers.

Unfortunately not a very pleasant experience. The burrata salad was not seasoned, sauced and mixed properly. Most of the greens were dry. The taste was okay however I would prefer a good mix with more seasoning. The second dish was fried squid/calamari. It was quite greasy and stiff. Most probably the squid was frozen and deep fried with low temperature. The last dish was a cheesecake (tarta de queso). It was a bit too sweet especially with the caramel sauce however it was the best dish of the night. Inside of the cake was runny like the way that make it in San Sebastian. The overall ambiance was nice, service was good.

One of the best restaurants. The food is tasty and well presented. The service is friendly and quick. A beautifully decorated restaurant which also has a nice terrace. We first had lunch here and breakfast on another day. The cheesecake is divine. Breakfast was very good too and worth the price which was not high. Cannot wait to come back on my next visit to Madrid.
