The 24 Best Restaurants In Rome - Rome - The Infatuation

"La Matriciana is old-school Rome at its finest. It encapsulates both the historic elegance of 1870 (when it opened) and the slick, suit-and-tie vibe of the ’60s. The waiters are as sharply dressed as the white-clothed tables, and the food is just as classic. The prosciutto and mozzarella here are unmatched—ham sliced fresh from the bone and extra-creamy cheese delivered daily from Campania. While the name might suggest ordering the amatriciana, we’d go for the velvety gricia or a steaming bowl of tortellini in brodo when the weather turns cool. The crowd is mostly locals: date nights, business dinners, and big family gatherings. And since it’s right across from Rome’s Opera House, it’s the perfect place for before or after the theater." - annie replogle

La Matriciana Dal 1870 - Review - Esquilino - Rome - The Infatuation

"La Matriciana is old-school Rome at its finest. It encapsulates both the historic elegance of 1870 (when it opened) and the slick, suit-and-tie vibe of the ’60s. The waiters are as sharply dressed as the white-clothed tables, and the food is just as classic. While the name might suggest ordering the amatriciana, we’d go for the velvety gricia or a steaming bowl of tortellini in brodo when the weather turns cool. The saltimbocca alla Romana is also flawlessly executed and tastes even better when paired with a side of sautéed chicory greens. The crowd is mostly locals: date nights, business dinners, and big family gatherings. Still one of the best and only places to go for a classic, traditional restaurant atmosphere. Old-school and elegant without being outdated. Good, straightforward food. Go for one of the Roman pastas, they do all of them really well. Do not skip the cheesecake for dessert. Service is generally excellent if you’re lucky with your waiter, though the family owners are extremely pleasant. Lovely for both lunch and dinner, but always book in advance.

The hype is real. The food is outstanding. I ordered the jewish Artichoke (5/5), the Pasta Matriciana (5/5) and the Tiramisu (5/5). The drinks were excellent and service was speedy, although a bit cold. Wonderful ambiance. Would gladly go back.

So, so delicious! We specifically went to try Roman dishes, and thoroughly enjoyed all of them: cacio e pepe, carbonara, veal saltimbocca, oxtail, fried artichoke, chicory, and the tiramisu! Good to note, though, is that we lined up outside shortly before opening on a Thursday night and barely got a table (people after us were waiting ~45 to be seated), so reservations are recommended.

I think this place got famous on TikTok but don’t be fooled, when I went at least half the clientele was locals. The food was great. Amazing pastas and appetizers and one of the best tiramisus of my life (and as a tiramisu lover I had many) it was perfectly balanced and creamy and the biscotti was just the right amount of wet without being soggy. Service was very attentive and quick without being pushy. Make a reservation because it’s impossible to get a table as a walk in.

Unfortunately, had a terrible experience. I was promptly seated but it went downhill from there. I was basically ignored for 20 minutes Before I even got water and the waiter looked like he was annoyed to even serve me. He took my order and then one whole hour later (no exaggeration) my pasta arrived. It took another hour for me to even get out of there because he was taking his time getting me the check. Then I found items on there that I didn’t order on top of it all. Unfortunately, won’t return and will tell others to avoid this place and spend money in a place where they don’t treat you like garbage. So disappointing I was so excited to try this place. I do appreciate the owner reaching out to me to make it right. The food was great. It’s just that service was just awful And honestly, I would return to a restaurant that had better servers and a friendlier staff, even if the food wasn’t amazing.

Came here after a long day walking, in jeans, sneakers, and a hoodie, and immediately felt judged — probably because we couldn’t afford their $25 per plate look. lol Service was confusing: the guy bringing water looked shocked when we said we didn’t want it, since apparently it’s “obligatory” and you have to pay for it — we even had to request it be removed from the bill. The wine guy then moved the bottle on purpose from glass to glass, spilling it everywhere and leaving our table covered in wine spots (we didn’t even make the mess!). Food was okay, nothing special, and prices were normal to high. If you’re a tourist and want to feel how differently they treat you when you don’t “dress the part,” this is the place. Not terrible, just not worth the hype!

Had to wait twenty minutes to be seated during lunch rush but it was absolutely worth it. Service was excellent, quick and very attentive. The carbonara is truly amazing, one of the best ever. The atmosphere is great, feels like you are transported to a better time.

⸻ This restaurant had been on my must-visit list for ages — and it did not disappoint. We arrived just after opening, and the waiter immediately found us a lovely outdoor table. From the very beginning, we felt genuinely taken care of: the entire staff was kind, helpful, and never overbearing. We ordered sparkling water and a bottle of red wine. To start, they brought delicious bread, grissini, and olives — a perfect opening. Then came burrata with cherry tomatoes, followed by cacio e pepe and rigatoni con ragù — all beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. For dessert: espresso and tiramisu. I asked the waiter for a birthday candle, as it was my husband’s birthday — he brought out a festive tiramisu, singing “Happy Birthday” with a smile. 🎂😊 Every dish was a delight, the service was flawless, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Truly the best dining experience we’ve had in Rome so far. 💗👌🏼
