Yelp
The service is spot-on, and they are very attentive throughout the meal without interfering, just like our grandparents enjoyed before everything went to... YOU know. Maggie is an absolute darling who remembers you and your family.
The ambience is nice, starting with a very clean space and comfortable seating, both against the walls and in the center with the large-tops. They take a lot of pride in this place.
The food... I think it's best that I give you my take on some of the dishes I've enjoyed here.
SPICY SLICED BEEF SZECHUAN STYLE
They "velvet" the beef and then swim it in a hot bath of spicy rich red Szechuan broth. If your mouth's been complaining that you don't take it out on the town like you used to, start here.
LAMB WITH LEEKS AND CILANTRO IN HOT BEAN SAUCE
I love it when the leeks are of substantial size to tell your taste buds "This tastes like leek!" And it's in perfect balance with the cilantro and onions. This is one of my favorites.
MA PO TOFU
They certainly did not forget the Szechuan peppercorns! So many other Chinese restaurants completely omit them, but La Mei Zi sprinkles in just the right amount to make your tongue tingle a little. And the backing of red heat in the sauce really balances out everything.
HOUSE FRIED RICE
One of the first things I order in a new Chinese restaurant because it tells me so much about them. Shrimp are properly warmed through as they should be rather than cooked solid, the beef is perfectly browned on the outside and tender on the inside, the rice is properly dried and seasoned with chicken powder, and the eggs are never scorched.
BEEF W/ CILANTRO, LEEKS IN SPICY SAUCE
This is not just the beef analog to the similar-sounding lamb dish above, but it's just as good. This one is a drier dish, sauce-wise.
EGGPLANT IN GARLIC SAUCE WITH PORK
Not the cloyingly sweet junk you get everywhere else. This one has good acid balance and it not overcooked. I hate too-sweet dishes; I loved this.
STIR FRIED STRING BEANS WITH PORK
This version doesn't go gonzo on the salinity like many do, so it's not just an "accent dish" meant to accompany other dishes. The beans are cooked perfectly tender-crisp.
TOFU SZECHUAN STYLE
Not a very spicy dish, mind you, but a tasty one nonetheless. Lots of great veggies and a nice sauce that flavors everything well.
SCALLION BEEF, SCALLION PORK
Like a Mongolian Beef (or pork), except not nearly as sweet, which is nice.
TWICE-COOKED PORK
A full measure of pork belly, but they slice it thin so you get more surface area to hold spices and deliver them to your tongue AND they can cook it at a higher temperature to make a greater flavor on the surfaces without rendering out any of that delicious flavored fat.
KUNG PAO CHICKEN
Thank goodness they use dark meat chicken! Making this with white meat is an abomination. The sauce is not in a thick pool at the bottom of your plate, rather it is a thin glaze that imparts a lot of flavor with a measure of sweetness.
3 CUPS CHICKEN
This is a sweet dish by design, but I had to try it anyway because everyone is kvelling about it. Yes, it's delicious for a sweet dish, but you'll really enjoy how they cook the chicken. Again, it's dark meat chicken, so it tastes great and has a luxurious mouth feel. If I liked sweet dishes I would get this every time.
TANGERINE CHICKEN
Not that gloopy-sweet fake-orange-flavored junk sauce poured over batter-fried white meat chicken! This is carefully crisped chicken in a semi-sweet tangerine sauce that is actually made using authentic dried tangerine peel. The photos on Yelp do not do this dish justice.
DAN DAN DRY NOODLES
An appetizer-size portion with a truly spicy dan dan sauce. MIX WELL before eating! The noodles are cooked just right, with just the slightest bite remaining, as they should.
HOT AND SOUR SOUP
A very good rendition. I wish it was available as a single portion.
WONTON IN HOT SICHUAN SAUCE
My favorite appetizer. Very smooth filling, nice and savory, with a hot chili oil-based sauce that has a real depth of flavor.
GINGER AND SCALLION FISH FILET
This dish in general is my wife's favorite, but La Mei Zi's version is just a bit too spicy for her. The rest of us loved it.
Each of my family members independently discovered La Mei Zi. We found out that we all knew about it when asking where we should all get together for a birthday dinner for one of the siblings and everyone independently texted me "La Mei Zi."
That's a pretty powerful endorsement.
Folks, I really do hope my review helps you choose La Mei Zi, and that you love it like we do.
