We went to a NASCAR event at the Coliseum. Everyone was great. From the woman that saw our group gathering, to the police and vendors - EVERYONE was nice.
It's such a historic building and I was happy to see it being cared for. I mean, I look at the ceiling and iron supports, no rust, just paint. I look at the floors, clean, sealed, and smooth - no chips.
Had to ask where our gate was, so I asked the police. One was not certain, but got me in the general direction. And he was nice. We had a long wait to get in, until the gate woman came out and gave us some great recommendations on things to do that were close by. Then, for this review I thought, I'll ask for a picture with the police. And again, really nice. Like, people that I felt were good cops. No shady eyes, or "let me see your ID," no "step over here and tell me your name." Nope, a shared smile and a thank you, then I went to the next nice and very important person, the bartender. And again, she was nice. I go to the bartenders that are not the prime spots. We even got to chat with one of the drivers, who was nice and a driver for Ally. Found our seats, thank you nice attendant, and watched the races.
Btw, the Coliseum really isn't made to be a racetrack for 27 cars. The qualification races were fun, 9 cars. But, the main heat got boring, after restarting every minute for a spin-out. After the first hour of the main race, we left.
Now, I took away the star because it was like watching an environmental terrorism show. The station field was covered with asphalt - just for this event. A track and pit area that rivaled any other What a waste, knowing it would all be torn up and hauled away soon.
Then, the fuel and tires. Seriously, do those get 2 gallons a mile? The whole event just felt wasteful. Maybe an electric NASCAR? Technology has come a long way and I think electric could hold its own.
It was fun, because of the people. I'll also be fine when these events go away. The impact on the environment obviously doesn't matter to the Coliseum, but it does to me.
NASCAR needs to clean it up.
