La Mesa Opens in Bryn Mawr with Ecuadorian-Inspired Food - Eater Twin Cities

"The long, slim restaurant at 230 Cedar Lake Road South in Minneapolis’ Bryn Mawr is now called La Mesa. The new venture comes from Juan Yunga and Ann Carlson-Yunga, a couple who met 19 years ago while working at the Nicollet Island Inn. Yunga is the chef, using the large wood-fire oven that dominates the room to serve food inspired by his upbringing in Cuenca, Ecuador. That means mahi-mahi tacos, guajillo spiced wings, half chickens roasted in that oven and served with choloula aioli, ceviche and more. In addition to a beer and wine list, there is also a selection of non-alcohol drinks like Andean flower tea, traditionally made with amaranth flowers, lime and sugar; and Fioravanti, an Ecuadorian strawberry soda that’s said to be one of the world’s first commercial sodas, according to a profile on the couple in the Southwest Journal. La Mesa is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner." - Joy Summers

Food is top notch. I don’t know how or why but this place had the best burger I’ve eaten all year and it’s not even an American restaurant. I don’t recommend the wings but I only tried one version of them. Everything else on the menu is above par. The Cheese and every dish containing cheese is phenomenal. Atmosphere is as good as it gets and being able to observe the kitchen out of the corner of your eye without needing to stare at it is cool. Service is good. Please note that every restaurant gets 5 stars for service unless something awful happens. I would give it a perfect 5 stars, but the prices are a little high, not egregiously high but high. And their hours are weird.

The food was good but a little muted. The timing and pace of service was slow. Overall, they are not quite up to their price points, but drinks are good and the double garage door patio will be nice in the Summer.

Im ecuadorian and the food doesn’t taste very authentic and it’s kinda expensive for what you get. The host was kind of rude, not very helpful. They had live music and the patio is nice, but wouldn’t come back.

We had a wonderful dinner celebrating our daughter and son-in-law's birthdays. Delicious food, lovely waitress, and great live music. A memorable evening. Looking forward to a return visit! We had hornados, the winter salad and the burger from the specials menu. All were delicious. We shared the 3 desserts which were all beautifully plated and delightful - complete with candles for the birthday couple.

I was excited to check out this neighborhood spot, but left a bit disappointed. The portions were quite lacking. I shouldn’t leave hungry after eating a $26 entree. It’s redeeming quality is the patio. Nice lighting and tree covering. This would be a great spot to stop by for a quick drink and then go get dinner elsewhere.

Excellent drinks, really spectacular. I got what seemed like an Ecudorian martini. My wife liked her meal, my burger (a special) was delicious and perfectly cooked, if messy. We shared a very salad, see picture, clearly an upscale, if casual, place. It was a pleasant place to be on a spectacular evening. The service was really the only downside. We had to flag down our waitress 3 times, and the hostess seemed [correction: tired].

Food is very good. The chef puts his heart and soul in it! The hostess hasn't been that friendly, and it's a nice neighborhood spot.

I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately my experience was deeply disappointing. This was my second time visiting. The first time, I came with my dad—the food was solid, but the restaurant was clearly understaffed with only two servers working the entire restaurant. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, hoping it was just a rough day. Today, I came with a friend and was excited to show her this spot. Same issue—only two servers, both visibly overwhelmed. It took a long time just to get our entrée orders in, though the guac and queso came out fairly quickly. I even told our server I felt for her, and that it was unfair she was left to handle so much. She looked like she was fighting back tears, and it was heartbreaking. When our food finally arrived, it was cold. I politely asked to speak with the manager—who I later found out is actually the owner of the restaurant. I asked why they were so consistently understaffed, since this was now the second time I’d experienced this. Her response? She told me it was “none of my concern.” I was shocked. I wasn’t attacking her—I was trying to give honest feedback about how the understaffing was affecting both guests and staff. Instead of hearing that, she got defensive and told me she should have waited to seat us (she had been working the host stand too). She offered to remake the tacos, but they came back even colder than before. The entire experience felt chaotic and poorly managed—and not because the servers weren’t doing their jobs, but because they were being set up to fail. Eventually, she asked if I wanted the tacos taken off the bill, which I appreciated—but by then, the damage was done. The staff are clearly trying their best, but the way this place is run makes it hard to enjoy. Until the owner takes responsibility and invests in proper staffing and support, I can’t recommend this place—no matter how much potential it has.
