La Mesa Opens in Bryn Mawr with Ecuadorian-Inspired Food | Eater Twin Cities

"I discovered the long, slim restaurant at 230 Cedar Lake Road South in Minneapolis' Bryn Mawr is now called La Mesa. The new venture comes from Juan Yunga and Ann Carlson‑Yunga, a couple who met 19 years ago while working at the Nicollet Island Inn. Yunga is the chef, using the large wood‑fire oven that dominates the room to serve food inspired by his upbringing in Cuenca, Ecuador—mahi‑mahi tacos, guajillo‑spiced wings, half chickens roasted in that oven and served with choloula aioli, ceviche and more. In addition to a beer and wine list, I noted a selection of non‑alcoholic drinks like Andean flower tea (traditionally made with amaranth flowers, lime and sugar) and Fioravanti, an Ecuadorian strawberry soda said to be one of the world’s first commercial sodas, according to a profile in the Southwest Journal. La Mesa is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner." - Joy Summers

We were able to secure a somewhat spontaeneous reservation to LaMesa Sat. night. It did not disappoint. We had delicious Hibiscus spritzers, Bryn Mawr Burger, Mahi-Mahi Tacos and the Winter Salad special. All were very flavorful, delicious & freshly prepared. Service by Sadie was spot-on! And was very accommodating. The only reason we didn’t give it 5 stars in the “atmosphere” category was that the music was ever so slightly a bit loud. But that will not deter us from returning. We look forward to indulging in their mid-week date night and/or live music events.

This is a great little restaurant in the neighborhood. Delicious food, great service and a wonderful atmosphere. I would love to come back during the summer for their patio.

Food is top notch. I don’t know how or why but this place had the best burger I’ve eaten all year and it’s not even an American restaurant. I don’t recommend the wings but I only tried one version of them. Everything else on the menu is above par. The Cheese and every dish containing cheese is phenomenal. Atmosphere is as good as it gets and being able to observe the kitchen out of the corner of your eye without needing to stare at it is cool. Service is good. Please note that every restaurant gets 5 stars for service unless something awful happens. I would give it a perfect 5 stars, but the prices are a little high, not egregiously high but high. And their hours are weird.

The food was good but a little muted. The timing and pace of service was slow. Overall, they are not quite up to their price points, but drinks are good and the double garage door patio will be nice in the Summer.

Very delicious! Had the Mahi Mahi tacos, beans and rice and it was so good! Super fresh ingredients and so flavorful. Staff was friendly. Wasn't loud so we could have a nice conversation over dinner.

We had a wonderful dinner celebrating our daughter and son-in-law's birthdays. Delicious food, lovely waitress, and great live music. A memorable evening. Looking forward to a return visit! We had hornados, the winter salad and the burger from the specials menu. All were delicious. We shared the 3 desserts which were all beautifully plated and delightful - complete with candles for the birthday couple.

Im ecuadorian and the food doesn’t taste very authentic and it’s kinda expensive for what you get. The host was kind of rude, not very helpful. They had live music and the patio is nice, but wouldn’t come back.

I was excited to check out this neighborhood spot, but left a bit disappointed. The portions were quite lacking. I shouldn’t leave hungry after eating a $26 entree. It’s redeeming quality is the patio. Nice lighting and tree covering. This would be a great spot to stop by for a quick drink and then go get dinner elsewhere.
