La Métairie

"La Métairie makes the perfect Ardennes escape. The rustic character of this former farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and the building transformed into an auberge boasting beautifully kept guestrooms. The cuisine is just as traditional, with a menu which includes trout and game (in season), as well other typical regional dishes." - Michelin Inspector

Lovely little hotel in a quiet, picturesque village. Modern, spotless rooms and excellent breakfasts. Just a heads-up: the bathrooms have no doors, so you’ll need to really trust your travel companion if you’re sharing a room! :)

After seeing such a lovely restaurant I decided I would enquire about a table, I was unfortunately we could be seated due to reservations upon leaving I thought it would be a shame to leave such a lovely location without a drink, the 8+ empty tables outside would indicate this surely wouldn't be an issue but after enquiring I was told by the presumed owner "No, this is my house do you think I know what I am doing, I said No!" I have never received such a sour response and can only presume this was due to my age and possibly attire. Shame as it really did look like a nice place to stop and enjoy a drink or something to eat however this behaviour will not be entertained and there are plenty of other places that would be happy to have us and with a smile and nice service!

We were in Belgium for the Formula 1, and had looked for somewhere that was within driving distance but which was also in a quiet location. This hotel ticked both boxes very well, as we were just 15 minutes from the circuit but also in the centre of a tranquil and picturesque village.||Our hosts were friendly and attentive, the food was imaginative, well cooked and attractively presented. The room was modern, light and airy, the bed really comfortable and a really nice bathroom/shower. ||We have never really considered exploring Belgium before, but after seeing the historical charm of Stavelot, and enjoying this hotel, we will be back, for sure.

We often escape to the Ardennes in the weekend. We love the region mainly for 3 reasons : beautiful green landscapes, good food and the friendliest people. ||La Métairie scores high on all these aspects. Situated in a charming little village, church in the middle and some beautiful houses and old trees around it... the village (Wanne) counts approx 60 inhabitants, so the landlady told us. The nearest town (at 8 km) is Stavelot, with some interesting sights and shopping. La Métairie started as a restaurant in 1992 and in 2005 the annex with guestrooms were build. These guestrooms are truly comfortable and charming in an Ardenner kind of way... You'll have the choice between small and large double rooms. Since we did not intend to spend much time in our room, we opted for the small room which was not really smaller than an average hotel room in our opinion (around 22 sqm).||But the true reason we chose this place was its restaurant : we have read many positive reviews and the food did certainly not disappoint. You will have the choice between a 'menu of the month' (33 euro - 3 courses), the special menu (50 euro - 4 courses) or à la carte. Value for money is excellent ! But the best of all is the chatty, adorable, always smiling and available landlady... although the restaurant was really busy, she took the time to connect to people and knew exactly how to make the whole experience perfect to us. ||Really a good address in the Ardennes. Try it out, you won't be disappointed ! ||By the way, there are always some great walking and biking trails laid out... Enjoy !

Just returned from our 3rd visit. Great place, very friendly owners, huge breakfast - we had dinner one evening at their Michelin rated restaurant - it was excellent! Location is perfect for road cycling if you like the climbs like my husband does. Also perfect location for exploring the Battle of the Bulge WW2 sites.||||Since the last review was done in 2008, I thought I would provide a few updates the owners have put in place since then:||- Nearest self service laundry located in Malmedy if you don't want to pay to have it done for you.||- Coffee/Tea (with heating thermos) & bottled water are complimentary in the room. ||- The owner's English was almost non-existent the first time we stayed (2010). She does extremely well with it now.

My husband and I stayed here a couple of nights earlier this month, as we had a wedding in nearby Grand-Halleux. We could not have been happier with La Metairie, what a wonderful find! Our room on the second floor was large, very clean with extremely comfortable beds. This lovely place exceeded our expectations.||||The owner who greeted us was so delightful, and so friendly in the mornings when we came for breakfast. What a delicious breakfast of eggs (prepared to order), plus an assortment of mini croissants/pain au chocolat, bread, cheese, yogurt, ham, etc. Wonderful way to start the day. ||||My husband and I were so disappointed we didn't have an opportunity to have dinner here, as we heard from other guests that it was absolutely amazing. I think I read somewhere that the restaurant has a Michelin star. ||||We Americans were enamored with the beautiful green landscape in and around Wanne. La Metairie was so perfectly located. We enjoyed driving the winding roads and seeing the beautiful vistas during the day. There is also so much WW2 history here - the December 1944 Historical Museum is nearby. There is a small monument across the street from La Metairie erected by the USA 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team honoring the Belgians who fought with them during the Battle of the Bulge to defend Trois-Ponts. ||||Although I never before thought of the Ardennes as somewhere to come visit, we were stunned by the comfort of La Metairie and the beauty and history in the area. We hope to come back one day.
