La Mexicana

The decor and atmosphere of this restaurant is wonderful however our food was tasting bland. I was expecting a lot more flavor. Thankfully in Houston there are plenty of choices for great Mexican cuisine.

We celebrated my dad’s birthday. The service was great, our server was attentive as well as other staff that kept an eye out. Loved the decor and memorabilia. Food 4stars only because my kids did not enjoy the rice and they typically love rice.

Had a 20 min wait when they had a whole section empty. Food was not worth the money. I had a BYO Combo with a taco, tostada and tamale. My sister had a tamale plate and my friend had the red chilaquilles...tamales were dry, beans were already starting to turn, they forgot to give us salsa, the taco meat had no seasoning...VERY bland. My friend said her chilaquilles were not good either.

Had a great lunch at La Mexicana. The Green Salsa is great as are the Tortillas. Very good Fajitas. The service and atmosphere is really good. I'll be back soon.

Not many people here on a Saturday night should have been a clue, the chips were about a 4 out of 10 neither the green or the red sauce was to our liking.. I ordered the 3 enchiladas plate 1 beef 1 cheese 1 chicken … my wife ordered the flautas. Neither of of finished our food, it was Luke warm and the flautas were bland. The enchiladas were basic at best solid 3 out of 10.

La Mexicana offers delicious food and a vibrant atmosphere. The authentic flavors and lively ambiance make it a great spot for any occasion.

What a great experience at La Mexicana, the homemade tortillas banner outside drew me in. Came in wanting to try their breakfast, but opted for the carna guisada plate, it was around 8 pm, so this made more sense. It was tender and very delicious.

Thumbs Up: This is a nice, traditional Mexican restaurant that has been a staple in the Montrose neighborhood for decades. If I want to meet friends for breakfast or lunch, I just say, "Let's meet at the Mexican Woman," and they know exactly where to go. Neutral: The menudo is good, but I've noticed that it often contains more bones than I'd like. Thumbs Up: The lunch and dinner plates are much better, and I particularly enjoy the enchiladas and tamales. Their refried beans taste better than those at many other Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants. Thumbs Up: The waitstaff finalize your check at the table, but there's also a register at the front. I appreciate that they sell candy at the register. I don't eat it myself, but my cat loves the "leche" candy--though I worry she might become diabetic if I'm not careful!

This is my go to Mexican restaurant! I love their lunch special with a soup and salad. I always take one home for dinner as it's so much food. The servers are very on top of it no matter how many people I am with!

Easily one of the worst meals I have ever had. The service was mediocre. I would not recommend. I ordered a pork taco and it was chewy and weird with a strange sauce that was not delicious and the other person with me ordered cheese enchiladas and the cheese was hard... our queso was a gelatinous and not "cheese" like tasting. Just yuck.

Second time coming here and it was way better ! Service was really fast and attentive. Ordered 1 lb of beef fajita a double rice, shredded cheese. They offer a lot of different fajita plates but I got the basic meat by the lb. The beef coulda been more juicy but it was well over 1lb. Queso was good and had options to add meat on there as well. Overall great because of the service I had.

Great service always quick with my order & the menudo is always great. Authentic Mexican food no Tex mex food here! Homemade flour tortillas & the servers do remember you if you visit frequently like we do.

Food is good but the prices are ridiculous. I'll Always pay for a good taco, but $6 for this is insane. All their meat tacos are small and way over priced.

Returning to Houston after 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised to find La Mexicana still thriving. The quality remains modest, aligning with its no-frills approach to traditional cuisine. However, it's important to note that prices have risen over the years. This might be a bit off-putting considering the quality hasn't seen a similar elevation. But for those of us who have a history with this place, La Mexicana holds a special spot. It's a repository of memories and a symbol of continuity in a city that's constantly evolving. In sum, while La Mexicana may not dazzle with its culinary offerings, its value lies in its nostalgia and the sense of community it fosters among long-time Houstonians. It's a reminder of the old Montrose, a slice of history that's worth revisiting for those who shared in its past.

This used to be our go to but prices have gone up so much recently. We used to pay around $20 for a Tampiqueña plate and now it's $32. How do you explain that? A 10oz cup of fideo soup is $15... how? I do appreciate that they serve breakfast all day and their coffee is very good but prices shouldn't have gone up this much.

I drove by this restaurant so many times and finally decided to stop by. The restaurant has nice ambiance , food and service was OK. Price range is quite affordable.

If you really want to enjoy some flavorful Mexican food in Houston... then La Mexicana is the place to go. La Mexicana is simply... Mexican food with great flavor! We had a great time lunching a Saturday there. Also, don't forget to try some Mexican traditional candy very fresh! The staff is friendly and helpful. Also the environment is nice and traditional!

I came to La Mexicana for a afternoon bite to eat. One thing I appreciate about this establishment, is there is plenty of free parking available. Once inside, I was greeted and seated pretty quickly. My server Juan was attentive and let me know what specials they currently had going. Since it was during lunch, I decided on my favorite meal, chicken enchiladas with their El Jimador Rita for my beverage to wash things down. The meal was delicious, hot and full of flavor. I was very impressed with how well the team here worked together to make sure the customers were handled well. I can see myself becoming a repeat customer of this place. Unfortunately trending down. It's tragic when you let otherwise really great food get hampered by poor decisions. All through the pandemic, even though they nickel and dimed us all the time on jalapeños, we tried to frequent local mom and pops, even here, to help them through a rough time. Even when prices went up, and it was takeout, we always left 20% or more for tip. Then out of the blue one day, they didn't include the usual bag of chips and a little salsa. I asked for it, the lady that usually rings us out said they charge $4 for it now. That was it. Haven't been back since.

A favorite for years. I only wish they took reservations. It's very popular for a reason. Try the green rice.

We are visiting Houston,and my sister has recommended this restaurant menudo was good Enchiladas de mole are good to Los huevos rancheros with tamales tasted yummy with some home made flower tortillas. Service host was not very friendly but the waiter did a good job getting our order. Ambiance- the place is nice and makes you feel you are in Mexico.

After being a very loyal customer for the past 20 years, I will no longer visit this restaurant. Today tables sat uncleared while we patiently waited for a place to sit. Waitstaff ignored the people that were waiting and were rude when politely asked if they were going to clear the tables. Honestly they appeared to not want additional customers. Prices have gone up and quality has gone down but we always returned. Not again. One star because zero stars are not allowed.

So this was our first time here the place is nice love the vibe. So I forgot to take pictures of food but I got the quesadillas and I have to say they were pretty good and had a nice amount of cheese. I also noticed that they served breakfast tacos so I knew that I was going to have that in morning and let me tell you the next morning I had the barbacoa tacos and they were so delicious no fat just meat which I love. Overall the food has been on point.

I was looking for a new breakfast spot to try and decided on La Mexicana. The food was overall decent; I got a couple breakfast tacos and felt the filling was tasty but the tortillas were a bit hard and not fresh. Some friends got the breakfast platters and those looked better, so I'd recommend those over the tacos alone. The chips and salsa were good! They had one green (not the creamy green kind) and one red salsa. The restaurant's interior is pretty big, and they were fast to seat you. The atmosphere is very casual.

the food had 0 flavor, it's pricey, and honestly just was not good. i read the reviews before we came and they were pretty good. But I dont Recommend coming here if you're looking for good, tasty, food.

We got Là Mexicana because we were craving fajitas! Ordered it on Uber Eats & it was delivered & packaged nicely. Our typical place is El Tiempo but honestly it's so pricey so we wanted to try something reasonable. We ordered chicken & beef, and I was disappointed because we wanted steak and weren't given the option, however the protein was great. The sides of bean, rice & chips were a good portion and good. Guacamole was amazing and my husband finished it all lol. They gave plenty of corn tortillas and the tacos turned out great. Definitely helped our craving!

$6 for a taco. On flour. What you get is the (1) flour tortilla, and the meat and onions. That's it, no cilantro, no raw onions, no avocado, no queso. Which is insane to me, because let's say you do get these extras? All of a sudden your $6 taco becomes a $9 taco. And all I did was add sliced avocado and cheese! That's $9 for a single taco. I mean the rice is good. The meat is seasoned. But come on, this isn't the middle of small town Arkansas where there's only a Walmart, Luby's and La Mex for a fun night out. This is Houston mf'ing Texas, this is where Mexican food come to live out their delicious lives and die. What reason do we have for this taco being $9? How do you look people in the eye after eating this and say it's the best taco you've ever had in your life? Even the gringo tacos at Torchy's or velvet is substantially cheaper. Why is a taco place that originated in Austin somehow more affordable? In what world does that make sense.

If I could give zero stars I would. Worse beef fajita enchiladas I've ever had. Sauce was not good, meat looked like it was boiled, just worse I've ever had. I hated that I wasted money on this place. Do not recommend at all!!

Wow! Go try this place haven't been in years brought back so many memories. Great staff don't be in a rush They have you covered. Very open tables not to close to other that others don't hear your conversations Go hungry !!

Food just OK, margaritas don't have any tequila on it but you get charged like they do!

Save your money and go somewhere else because this is not authentic Mexican food. The food tastes like it came out the can and the tortillas were hard. The enchiladas are garbage. There are many ingredients missing from there so called authentic Mexican dishes. Just because it's been around for a long time doesn't mean it's authentic Let's talk about the waiter, the waiter is very quiet and serious. I asked him if there was a kids plate with just plain meat beans and rice. he recommended me a fajita plate and we went with it. After the food arrived we realized how big my son's plate was compared to ours and how much more expensive it was. ( the money was no real issue) it was the fact that his recommendation was way off. We criticized his recommendation and he insulted us by saying you have the menu you can read it. after going back and forth with him we found that there is a kids plate with exactly what we asked for and it was a fraction of the price of what he recommended. This place is insane.

Came here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and was easily able to get a table and parking spot in their attached lot. Service was very attentive and fast and the food was good, I just didn't feel like the price point was warranted for what was served. I ordered their two beef fajita quesadilla plate that came with rice and beans and it was $16. Again, it was yummy, but $13 would have been a better price point (or less even) for what was given.

Been coming to this restaurant since I was 5 years old !! The restaurant and it's kitchen has definitely passed the time of all times. I can remember eating here with my parents every Sunday morning and to this day decades later that plates still tastes the same! I love the barbacoa plate and the enchiladas.

The lines are massive but move quickly. The food is fresh and authentic. If you are in the mood for Menudo then then this is the location. The ambiance during Sunday brunch time is fussy. Loud conversations, children and vast arrays of noises. If you are in a festive mood, then hooray!!! This is it.

Tex mex breakfast food and open early! Started off with a frozen marg with tajin on the edge. Tasted like a standard mixed marg, nothing really special, but fun to order when you've just worked a long shift. For my meal, I got the chilaquiles. To put it quite simply, it's tortilla chips covered in a tomato based sauce and slathered in cheese. It tastes pretty simple and there's nothing to rave about here. But it's tortilla chips covered in cheese so of course I ate all of it. Refried beans are ok, not the best I've had. Overall, this is an ok option if you're looking for a Tex mex breakfast option.

I enjoy eating here because the food is always delicious. The servers we have had are always so nice and attentive and the whole place is decorated so nicely. Check this place out if you have not yet!

I hope the next time I get the idea to stop for some queso and margarita, that I read my own Yelp! Service was good and queso was yellow! Just say NO!

The food is always excellent & authentic!! The service is very good with wait staff knowledgeable & most pleasant!! The only criticism is that the prices have increased too much! The plates do not warrant such high prices & it makes us go to other Mexican restaurants with more reasonable prices.

Probably the worst Mexican food I've had in Houston, would not recommend. Everything tasted like it came from a can and was very overpriced.

Working in the medical field, especially during the pandemic can be pretty stressful. After a night shift, my coworkers and I just want to have a drink and unwind sometimes. Luckily there are a few spots in and around the Medical Center that serve breakfast as well as some adult beverages. We have a few go to spots, but recently started coming here. Like our other spots, this place is full of people in scrubs early in the morning. Service is always great, no complaints there. I was told the margaritas are great here. I started off with a small guava marg and quickly wished I got the big one. This drink was so delicious and refreshing and a perfect compliment to a breakfast meal. Be careful as these things will sneak up on you. Their chips and salsas were good, but they definitely need bigger bowls for the salsa. I couldn't decide on food so I just got a variety of tacos. These were very tasty and hit the spot. I will definitely be back!

Surprised at the relatively low reviews here - but selfish part of me says that's more tacos for me! A couple of my Mexican friends recommended this place as some of the best barbacoa in town, and after having tried it I am inclined to believe them. The barbacoa has that unctuousness that coats your mouth with an oily richness, just the right amount of saltiness, and extremely moist - that, coupled with the freshly made flour tortillas = heaven. Also, their green salsa is my favorite over the red. Not sure why all the haters, but this place is legit!

On my first visit, I was very impressed of the food. Was always happy to go back and try different menu items. That being said, my last two visits were very disappointing, food wasn't as delicious as before, (new cook?). Had dinner there past Sunday. Had the Chile Rellenos, with sauce on side, and Charro Beans. My plate was served and never saw such a unappetizing looking plate. The rice was in one Lump! (could have spread it out), and the Naked Rellenos. If they had put the small dish of sauce on the plate, and added the small bowl of beans on it also. It would make the dish more appealing. The food was also not as delicious as before. Management take note, How the food is plated is very important. The plate should look pleasant to the eye. Not an eyesore! And if you have a different cook,,,, well you know what to do!

TL;DR(Too Long; Didn't Read): The hostesses were mean and had constant RBF(Resting B!%ch Face) while being generally inattentive(understandably upset given the clientele of that area), the food left a lot to be desired(and made me feel sick), got whacked in the back a few times when in the bathroom by the door, and generally unpleasant save for the atmosphere of the dining area which was kinda nice. To start: Food. I ordered the fajita plate. It came with chicken, onions, pico, guacamole, refined beans, and rice, with a side of tortillas(they also charge $2.50 for extra tortillas... not as bad as other places). The chicken was dry. Dry enough to absorb the saliva from your mouth, and it was bland. Had it been moist it probably would have been tasty... but eventually it made me feel sick and like I was holding down vomit when I started to digest it. The refried beans tasted purely of starch. I had never tasted beans like that before and I did not like it. It was like I was choking in starch. Bland flavor. The rice wasn't bad. Good job on that! The guac was... unfortunately bland. It didn't have much flavor and tasted akin to biting into a raw avocado... but not the worst. The service wasn't bad. The men who served us were attentive, nice, smiling, and (rightfully) got upset at the hostesses for being so unattentive. They got us chips and refills on our drinks fast, and they were model servers. I wish I got their names! The atmosphere and ambience is enjoyable. It's got a nice vibe to it, even if it's small, but the pictures and paintings around the place were very nice to see. Just disappointing generally. The food made myself and my mother feel sick, and it wasn't pleasant eating. Servers were nice, at least.

I'm upset. Barely ate half my tostada before I started to pick at it and scavenge for good pieces. Literally the worst Mexican restaurant I've been to in Houston. Don't bother coming!! Worse than mid.

Came for the first time on a random Tuesday afternoon for dinner and received shockingly awful service. The restaurant was totally empty, but our server was seemingly irritated by having to wait on us. I don't think I've ever had a server interact with me with such disrespect and unkindness. I mean literally smacking his lips and deep sighing. He was so directly and intentionally rude, as soon as we sat down. It was surreal. We were so uncomfortable, we left before we could even order food. Another employee was sincerely apologetic but made it seem like that's how our server behaved often. Not okay. Telling everyone I know to never eat here.

I brought my boyfriend here two years ago and he fell in love with the food! We started coming very often. Decent price, delicious, real tortillas, and great drinks. If you want a dessert, the sopapillas are THE BEST!

this place definitely would've been fine in 1995, but in 2023 food has simply evolved to be way danker, because the market demands ever danker food. 2023 has too many dank options for this place to continue to thrive. It will certainly survive because the owners own the land and will continue to make a profit, but the majority of ppl know there are much danker tex mex options out there and the reviews on Yelp reflect that. Get with the times and increase dankness of food or understand that you will eventually fade into obscurity. They've had a nice long run but need to reinvent themselves asap.

Came here for brunch on a Sunday and this place was busy! Service was great and attentive. For the table they serve you chips with red and green salsa. Neither of the salsas were spicy to me and I preferred the red salsa as the green one was watery to me. For my meal I got the huevos rancheros with barbacoa. The dish was just ok, nothing special to rave about. What I really thought was strange was that they didn't have any hot sauce. They offered Tabasco but who eats Mexican food with Tabasco sauce?! They didn't even have habanero which I thought was the weirdest thing. My husband and I shared the Menudo soup which was inedible. It was very oily and had no taste to it. I liked that they sell sweets up front to take home. That was the best part of the restaurant. If I do come back, maybe I'll try their tacos and will know to bring my own hot sauce. Parking: Decent sized private lots that extend to across the street. No valet.

Came in after work on a weekday, it wasn't too busy so we got seated quickly and they brought out food to us within 10 minutes. The server was good at following up and making sure everything was okay. I ordered chicken fajitas and my girlfriend ordered a cup of the tortilla soup. The chicken fajitas were okay, nothing too special about them. The rice and beans tasted premade as they didn't have much flavor to them. My girlfriend said the same thing about the tortilla soup and the lemonade agua that she got. Overall our experience was just okay because of the food. Most likely won't come back just because I know there's way better out there.

Low priced Tex-Mex to fill you up inexpensively! Can't go wrong with simple, delicious meals, down to earth ambience. No need to get too dressed up - don't be grungy either. Nice folks working their, anything on the menu is delicious.

The margaritas are terrible. I don't mean just the house margaritas. Even the $15 margaritas are bad. The food here has really gone downhill over the past couple of years. What happened?? Sad

Well prices and very good. Service is always very quick and helpful. A staple of the community and the best texas breakfast tacos in Montrose.

Not to be confused with La Messi-cana, or La Ronaldo-cana, or La Salah-cana or La Mane-cana for that matter. We ate here a long time ago, and we liked it. Nothing was amazing, but it was your typical homestyle Tex Mex, a little pricy, with good service. It's cute on the inside and out, and is more expensive than Cha-Cho's, but probably better quality ingredients, if a little less authentic (not that Cha-Cho's is particularly authentic, but it's very homestyle Tex Mex), and a much trendier crowd here too. We'll be coming back here again eventually, but we're not sure when, as we have a very long list of things to try first, and we prefer real Mexican rather than Texican.

This is a really tasty treat! We both enjoyed the restaurant, the food and the service. Good place - go there!
