"My burrito jam of 2018 was La Mission on University Ave because I love the carnitas and how artfully they have transformed an old Taco Bell into an all-around terrific non-chain taqueria." - Ellen Fort

Google
Drove by this place for years but never came in until this week. We loved our experience here: I had tacos 2 kinds and my husband had a burrito. Friendly staff took our order and we sat outside on picnic benches in the sun in a pretty setting. We will be back-there is more to try!

Google
Delicious tasting Mexican food with a lovely patio in the back. Prices are a little more expensive than other Mexican places but they do have quality food. Recommend going to try their breakfast menu!

Google
La Mission has excellent Mexican food with big portions. You would never know from looking at it because it looks like a fast food Mexican restaurant that has been renovated, in fact, long ago, it used to be other places. I wish they had more seating inside, there’s only enough room for maybe 10 people, and outside is usually too cold in Berkeley to go and hang out. But there is a lot of outdoor seating if the weather is decent. While everything I’ve had here has been good, the Baja fish taco might be my favorite. The posole is also good, but the portion is so huge. I felt like it was enough for five people. I wish the inside of the restaurant or a little bit warmer, but on the other hand, it stays open later than almost any place else around that has decent food.

Google
I came here on a whim and I liked it. The food was good and generous portions. They mainly have outdoor seating and limited indoor seating. Very friendly staff and a nice chill vibe with families and couples.

Google
Big Mexican menu with great options. The chipotle chicken sandwich is amazing! It's a generous amount of food and the chipotle sauce is the perfect flavor and right amount of spice. Each time I stay out here for work I stop here for dinner. They have a nice patio area to chill out on. Definitely worth a stop!

Google
I always enjoy eating at La Mission! When I stopped by yesterday, I tried the green breakfast enchiladas with chorizo which was so so good. The burritos are always generous and delicious. You order at the counter inside and then take a number and find a seat- my favorite ordering system. Plenty of outdoor seating as well, some of which is covered by a roof.

Google
i've had your mole before and it was excellent, last night. You gave me a plate that was dry and uninspired?I don't know how you get a hard enchilada. It was firm like it had been premade and frozen. You can do better. I'll give you one more shot and get it to eat there and if you're good on it, I'll remove this, but you didn't represent the culture or mole as a specialty at all, very disappointed.

Google
I never regretted a burrito purchase until tonight… $20 for a burrito ($19.73 with tax), you gotta be kidding me… I thought at least it’s a hefty burrito, nope just wrapped up in two layers of foil. Like fully wrapped with two distinct sheets of aluminum foil. Unfortunately it appears that the same wrapping enthusiasm was missing during the construction of the burrito as it began to unwrap with the first bite and fell apart entirely by the end. The disappointments did not end there. They put salsa in the burrito, but you might be better off sucking on a handful of jalapeno seeds which probably have more flavor. Usually there is great reward with hot salsa as it packs so much flavor with the punch. This was just the punch again and again. Ask for the salsa on the side if you would like to taste your food. And you know what, I could let it all go if it was a $14 burrito but nope paid $20 for what exactly? What’s next? $30 burritos will be the norm before the end of the decade? This has to stop somewhere. So many good spots for a burrito in east bay and this is NOT one of t hem.

Yelp
===TL;DR=== - Pozole - Chipotle chicken sandwich ===TMI=== Let me telllllllll you. If you're around the area and you're craving pozole? Search no further. Their pozole here is bomb dot com with a generous proportion! I recommend to share or you get 2 in 1. Eat some there and take home the rest cause it gets better the next day. The chipotle chicken sandwich was also fire. The telera roll is perfection, warm and crunchy on the outside and pillow soft as you bite down. The sandwich gets so stuffed, get ready to have sauces oozing out. Oh also don't sleep on their red and green sauces near the counter, they're addicting with your food or your chips! Cute & small interior but large outdoor patio outside surrounded by large umbrellas and greens. Honorable mention, their burrito was bomb also. Literally anything on their menu is a hit.

Yelp
Quick take: the portion sizes and staff are their best selling points. My wife enjoyed their Baja fish tacos. Nicely fried and huge too! My wife couldn't finish both so I ended up with more food than intended lol. I'll need to try their burrito again before I give my opinion. The chicharron was crispy but felt a bit too dry. The horchata wasn't the typical flavor or appearance I'm used to either. Kinda tasted a bit like chocolate milk. Not my thing but hey it's still hit the spot. Didn't get to sit inside due to limited seating. They have a lot of tables and benches outside. Dress warmly!

Yelp
Fast casual, kid-friendly and parking... granted it's limited, but it's there. I'm upgrading La Mission for the sake of dine-in. Their seating is all outdoor, so weather permitting, with kids in hand, it's a great option. Food isn't cheap taqueria prices, but it's quality and if your situation is anything like mine, it's not fast food hamburgers, and therefore take the W. Recently my husband and I shared the steak enchiladas and the chicken fajitas and it was a ton of food and so good - the accompanying rice and beans were delicious and I found the quality of the protein to be there. My kids ate up the kids burrito and flautas and everyone was happy. The guac (at least on top of the enchiladas) was still a little flavorless and not super thick and creamy, but everything else was really good. Overall, if we need a kid-friendly, fast casual spot that isn't hamburgers (if the children allow it; I know, I know, we're owned), this is it for my fam!

Yelp
Ordered some takeout from this place and wasn't disappointed! The portion sizes were surprisingly big and the food was very filling. It's usually pretty hard finding food in Berkeley that is filling for $15-20 but the food pricing here is reasonably tame. I loved the variety of food on the menu as well, it was my first time trying out the mole burritos and i really liked them! The food tastes good and isn't too salty or too sweet just perfect :) The food was done very quickly in about 10-15 minutes and everything was packaged nicely for takeout :) I really loved this place and would love to order from here again in the future :)! It's important to note, it is on one of the busier streets in Berkeley so traffic may be busy!

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Sunday around 1:30pm! Found parking in the small lot attached to the restaurant. They don't take reservations, but we were able to get seating with our party of 10 . There is some indoor seating and then there is a cute patio outside with some tables. Veggie burrito (3.5/5): Hefty burrito! I added the mix-ins (sour cream, guacamole, cheese), each for an additional charge, but I wish they came with the veggie burrito by default. The fillings weren't layered evenly - half of the burrito had all the refried beans and rice, and the other half had everything else. But good flavors overall! Desserts (5/5): Was not expecting the desserts to be so good! Chocolate flan and strawberry tres leches were delicious - small but very tasty. Overall, the burrito fillings could have been layered more evenly, but the desserts were great! I would come back to La Mission for the desserts.

Yelp
I appreciate that the restaurant has a parking lot and both indoor and outdoor seating. (Seating indoors was limited, but I had no trouble finding a table.) You order at the counter and then they bring the food to your table. I got the pozole which I really enjoyed! The flavor of the soup was exactly what I was looking for and I appreciated the garnishes that came with the dish. My only feedback would be to include more meat, but maybe I just got unlucky with my bowl in particular.
google avatar

Emma N.

Yelp
The tres leches was the highlight of the meal: it was super moist, delicious, and the perfect amount of sweetness. The al pastor burrito was really flavorful too, and there was a good portion of meat with the tasty pineapple marinade. The workers were super kind, and the outside patio is pretty cute with the lights.

Yelp
I was curious to try La Mission with my friend for dinner, and we were satisfied with our experience! The place is super homey, with a nice outdoor area, back parking, and lots of flowers. We ordered at the front, and my server helped me a lot through my order. I wanted to try a mole burrito for the first time, and he recommended me adjustments to make all the items complement each other. Our order was given not soon after, and the burritos were great! It was a standard burrito, with rice, beans, and meat. I feel it was not too special, but it was a great meal regardless!

Yelp
Any time I am near Berkeley I make it a point to visit La Mission. Good Mexican food is a must for any visit to California, and La Mission delivers. This time we ordered three tacos (Baja fish, chicken, steak) and the lamb barbacoa platter. I also ordered a horchata, a sangria, and flan. I'll start by saying the flan is the best flan I have ever had. The lamb barbacoa as also phenomenal. The tacos were each HUGE and were were incredibly satisfying. The ambiance of La Mission is lovely. There is a pretty outdoor patio, or if it is cold, there is plenty of indoor seating as well. I love the casual Mexican vibes of the interior. The restaurant is counter service only, but the staff was incredibly friendly and helped me pick out my drinks and desert.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Casual and c uterestaurant which has outside seating. Heaters present if you visit during winter. Employees were approachable and friendly. Food: steak fajita was dry and it didn't have taste. I did enjoy the guacamole and the fajita veggies. Also I ordered corn tortilla and I was given flour. Or is it that I don't know how to tell the difference. I know it was white and smelled like flour. The burrito was good. Big size and the ratio of the ingredients, including the meat (carnitas) was good. Parking: they have a small parking at the back of the restaurant, otherwise it's street parking.
google avatar

Yelp
The restaurant is very homey w/ a few tables inside and lots of patio seating outside. The service was nice and gave us salsa condiments on the side. I got a Carne Asada Burrito w/ Black Beans, Medium Salsa, Fajita Style. Carne Asada Burrito - 5/10 (this was a pretty average burrito with lots of filler inside. i felt like the rice and beans MASKED the flavor of the actual steak. the burrito itself was dry and lacked salsa. with each bite i took, i had to add more on myself. the fajita veggies could've been grilled for longer as it was a bit firm still. for $17 i would say the portion is quite small and not worth the price. i have had better carne asada, especially in burritos without all the filler stuff. i also think it's a bit outrageous how adding anything extra to the burrito is an up-charge) Overall I had to pay an extra $2.5 to add fajita veggies, which was still very underwhelming. This place is definitely overpriced for burritos and I respectfully would say that Chipotle would've been the better option...
google avatar

Loella D.

Yelp
Yumm! Love the fish tacos and plantains here. I've had the veggie burrito for takeout in the past and it's good. Seating and dining areas are really really beautiful and adds to the experience, and service is great.

Jessica G.

Yelp
SO GOOD!!! I got the poblano mole burrito super good. They charged extra for cheese but I could've done without it, the flavors of the mole were amazing
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
My company ordered this to go and honestly wasn't bad, but i felt it lacked a bit of flavor. I wouldn't be mad if they ordered again, but personally would explore other options.
google avatar

Fleur S.

Yelp
Nice place with outdoor seating. Sangria wasn't very good. Small glass and served warm with small pieces of apple in it. Homemade tortillas and tortilla chips were delicious. Had the pozole which was good but not enough side stuff for it. Pico de gallo lacked flavor. Large portions though and the nopales were delicious. Service was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally had the chance to stop by here again today for lunch with my girlfriend. This visit, I got a pork Mole Poblano burrito that was absolute perfection - the lightly sweet / spiced flavor profile of the mole combined with the pickled onions, jalapenos and carrots was absolutely delightful. Also, based on my experience last time, I opted out of getting guac and sour cream in my burrito and instead decided to get guac on the side. This was absolutely the right call. It definitely fixed the issues I had with my burrito last time and made the eating experience all the more enjoyable. Updating to a 5/5 because my gripes last time were my own fault. Would definitely recommend stopping by here - I will be back again for sure!

Marina D.

Yelp
very friendly staff! I had the 2 baja fish tacos and a pineapple agua fresca. yum! love the patio too
google avatar

Evelyn J.

Yelp
Their pozole is absolutely delicious - we come here just for that! Wouldn't recommend their steak burritos as the tortilla and meat were a little too dry for my taste. Their steak tacos were just okay as well. The people are super friendly and if you want to dine in, it's a nice place to that as well on a warm day since their dining area's mostly outdoors. Even though it's a smaller parking lot, I've usually always been able to find parking still.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
La Mission is delicious. Always on point. The patio and indoor seating was perfect for any time of the day. Great service and perfect ambiance. Had some crispy fish tacos and enchiladas and left with a smile. There's also free parking in the back. Can't wait to be back.

Jarof L.

Yelp
Went here for the first time today with a friend, and was not disappointed. Delicious food, super fast, and friendly. Patio space is beautiful and huge with good vibes. Very good portions - I got 2 baja fish tacos and they were excellent for less than $15. Hope to go back soon!

Yelp
Great Mexican food in the heart of Berkeley. On University Ave. Looks like a converted Taco Bell from the street. They du have a parking lot which is a plus Menu ha a lot to offer. Last time I tried the chicken mole enchiladas which were tasty. This time we got a couple different huge burritos which were quite yummy They offer 3 different bean choices. The pinto beans w/chorizo have a good spicy kick to them.Outside patio is nice surrounded by a bit of foliage Only a couple tables inside. Order at the counter. Quick service. Frequently has lines if you go during busy times of the day. Serves beer Cookies behind the counter looked inviting! Pet friendly. A must visit if you are in the area with a hankering for Mexican food.

Yelp
There are not enough late night restaurants open in Berkeley. I stopped by La Mission for a late 9:00 p.m. dinner and there were quite a few people at the restaurant. After putting in my order, I waited around 15 minutes before I received my food. Not too bad considering how swamped they were with their phone-in and app orders. My wife and I shared their mole poblano flautas plate. We opted for rice and refried beans for an addition $6, and went for four flautas, so each person could have two. The flautas are fried to perfection. However, the chicken inside ate a bit dry. I really wish there was more mole on top, because it was delicious: such a wonderful depth of flavor of dried chilies and Mexican spices. The pickled onions and peppers are a nice compliment to the dish and definitely brings a nice acidity to the dish. If you're craving Mexican late night, La Mission is a satisfying meal.
google avatar

Heidy C.

Yelp
This is my favorite go to for some mole. It is delicious. They have the best chips and salsa. I always order the mole and add plantains. They are consistent and we travel to come here to enjoy their delicious food. We enjoy it most in the summer out on their patio. Been coming here for years and we enjoy every visit
google avatar

Phil M.

Yelp
One of the first restaraunts I visited when I moved to Berkeley CA. Wondeful Steak Tacos and the grand kids loved the Nachos. Reasnobly prices and delicious.

Ibin R.

Yelp
The service was meh, the guy was annoyed I was asking questions. A 13$ burrito is actually 21$ once you add cheese, sour cream, guacamole... and it wasn't even wrapped properly. And no free side chips ? Won't be going here again.

Eric T.

Yelp
Great burritos, fresh ingredients, friendly people, good service. Love the chicken tortilla, pozole soups.Oh so good. Will most certainly go back.
google avatar

Isabella I.

Yelp
Spent like 15$ on two large tacos and they came in basically a puddle of sour cream. I'm talking just absolutely DRENCHED in sour cream. I've literally never seen so much sour cream on a taco before. Who would want this? Honestly borderline inedible
google avatar

Dhestiny R.

Yelp
Fantastic food, flavors are great, back patio is way too cute and very relaxing, the salsa is A1 top tier Are a breakfast burrito and it was everything I had hoped for
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Great food excellent service. Never had a bad meal or experience. This is our go place on the weekends.
google avatar

Ed G.

Yelp
They always mess up orders. The portions are so small. So ur not getting worth the money you pay for barely any meat in their burritos and taste is meh. This is a second review after giving them another chance I will never come back again
google avatar

Ray B.

Yelp
Over 20+ years living in California has turned me into a bit of a taco connoisseur/snob, and with that finely honed skill, I set out to find the best taco in my area. I ended up stumbling across one of Berkeley's best Mexican restaurants - maybe the best in the East Bay. I mean, this place has it all: Delicious food - check! Great outdoor patio - check! Dog-friendly - check! Free parking lot - check! The best salsa verde - check! Thick, well-seasoned chips - check! Tasty street tacos - check! Only thing missing--there is no Taco Tuesday special, but I can live without that. BB
google avatar

Gaby S.

Yelp
This is my go to place! I love their burritos. Service is always super quick. They have generous portions. Their patio area is dog friendly and a chill place to enjoy your meal.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Chilaquiles with the green sauce no meat was delicious. And the whole beans go perfectly.
google avatar

John Charles Q.

Yelp
I ordered the baja fish taco. It was delicious. The service was good. My order came within 30 minutes. The ambiance was decent. The leg of the table I was assigned to was uneven, so the table keeps on moving. Would go again!
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
Love this place! In my top 2 taco places ever, chicken tacos de plaza are my go to. Their green salsa is spectacular. They're always very friendly here. Comfortably close to the university, I go out of my way when I have the time before or after class to come here.
google avatar

Priyanka S.

Yelp
Only got tacos, but almost every single one of them. The Baja fish was very light and airy similar to Baja, all the meat was very good. Great neighborhood spot with very cute backyard al fresco seating
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
La Mission is a casual spot for Mexican eats in Berkeley. The menu was quite diverse, but they seemed especially proud of their moles. To try out these sauces, we got the Chicken Pipian Mole Burrito, which came with chicken, rice, beans, pickled onions, jalapeños, and a spicy mole guajillo sauce, all wrapped in a large flour tortilla. We also had the simple Green Salad, made of chopped romaine, carrots, jicama, cabbage, radishes, and toasted pumpkin seeds in a cilantro lime vinaigrette. But my favorite dishes were the Barbacoa Taco, made of tender shredded leg of lamb on double corn tortillas; and the Baja Fish Taco, an oversized battered fillet of cod dressed with chipotle crema, pico de gallo, cabbage, and lime, all served in a tortilla. Overall, the food here was tasty and came at a great value, though the restaurant could have been cleaner.
google avatar

Miguel G.

Yelp
First time in here, I got a Ceviche plate but I been around Bay Area trying seafood And I can tell when place deserves a good review but isn't the case , ceviche overcooked due to exaggerated lemon juice .
google avatar

Jem T.

Yelp
This place never ever fails. Happy to report that they serve breakfast burritos! We also ordered a chicharron burrito and chicken flautas and they didn't disappoint. They serve generous portions and the servings are proportional. It's quick and friendly service too. You can easily find seating inside and on the patio, though parking can be a bit tricky. Their agua frescas and mineragua complement each dish perfectly. They also service complimentary infused water. Please don't forget to put your dishes in the designated bins once you've enjoyed your delicious meal.
google avatar

Yelp
How could my first review of 2024 NOT be for La Mission? This place is consistently delicious, great service (even with super long lines!), and has a beautiful seating area. Though it can get packed and the seating is right off the sidewalk (not in the street, just close to it), the turnover is quick. Try the pozole (my faaaave) or for breakfast, the chilaquiles (also my faaaaaaaaave). You really can't go wrong with this menu! Also omg I've reviewed this place 4 times?? Whoops. Still gets 5 stars from me!!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Seen this place it always seemed to be packed every time we passed by so we had to give this place a try! Right when I walked in, I was greeted right away and there was sooo much to choose from and it was hard for me to make a decision on what I wanted lol. We weren't that hungry but still wanted to try this spot out. Decided to order us some carne asada tacos and carnitas taco with a horchata.....yum! I totally forgot to tell them plain but it's ok I just picked out the onions and cilantro. The food overall was ok nothing outstanding about it. Definitely would like to try their dessert I looovveee me some cheesecake and carrot cake!!! My next visit I would definitely check out their desserts!
google avatar

Harlow L.

Yelp
The burritos are excellent. Very generous portions served in a quaint low key setting.
google avatar

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
I've been going nearly weekly for about four years now to grab a to-go burrito because when I first started, the food was so dang good. My experience of late has been that when the food is well-prepared, it's super yummy. But you just can't count on it, perhaps depending on the cook that day. All too often over the last year and a half, when I have gotten home with a to-go burrito, it has been missing all the extras I ordered and paid for (guacamole, Mexican cheese, etc.). Same with the food quality - it has been really uneven lately. I drive a bit out of my way to go here, but I notice that I have been going less and less.
google avatar

joe m.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but there were several areas needing improvement. Namely the cleanliness and the area outside.
google avatar

Iris R.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday night on a while. Ordered the ceviche based on previous reviews and OMG it was fantastic!!! Very fresh. Also ordered plantains that were soft, sweet and lightly crisped edges. The plate came with warm flavorful black beans and topped with a sour cream sauce. My partner had an asada burrito and said it was very good. Good enough to return for. The place is a small inside but has wonderful, plentiful outdoor seating with fantastic tropical plants and flowers and heaters. Oh...and a small parking lot. Definitely coming back to try more things since everything we had was delicious.
google avatar

Genny M.

Yelp
This place is so cute! Little corner restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating on their patio. If you're looking to eat indoors, they only have 2 tables, so come prepared to wait. We ordered at the counter and found a table. The food quickly came out. Their servings a huge and fairly priced. Definitely try the flautas de mole. So good.
google avatar

Yelp
Where to start... I had been meaning to stop by La Mission for a while now. Berkeley isn't knows for having good Mexican food and as a Mexican myself, I am often disappointed. This time, however, was different! My friend and I placed our order indoors with the very sweet and helpful staff. I opted for the tacos dorados de papa with an horchata and side of rice and beans and he went for the chicken burrito. They have a beautiful section outdoors for seating and we chose to sit at one of the picnic style benches. The tacos dorados were SOOOOOOOO good! The potatoes were soft and and fluffy, the tortilla was perfectly fried and crispy. The sour cream and queso fresco were both super fresh and gave the dish a nice touch of acidity. The vegetables brought a fresh element to the dish that can easily taste greasy. These were a 12/10 I loved them. The rice and beans were super yummy too! The horchata was also spectacular. I haven't had a good horchata in Berkeley in my 4 years living here till I had this one. It's absolutely creamy and delicious. My friend also really enjoyed his burrito and said it was one of the better ones he's had here. I definitely suggest checking this place out! I can't wait to come back for the tacos and horchata! Keep it up!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
I discovered after ordering that they are known for their burritos and mole. I messed up by getting Al Pastor tacos. They tasted fine but definitely not what i expected because their pastor was braised. The guac and chips is the real star. The freshly made chips were some of the best I've had. Portions are huge! They have really cute outdoor seating. I would definitely come back again but order something else.
google avatar

Sydney J.

Yelp
I ordered a vegetarian burrito with black beans and mild salsa, which when you added in tax and 15% tip, came out to $11.97 The quantity was big and service was friendly, but the burrito was rather underwhelming in flavor. I didn't add cheese or other toppings due to the extra cost associated with them so that could've been part of it, but I expected more flavoring to be included by default, at least just from the vegetables or salsa included. I could barely taste salsa, so overall it was a bit on the drier side (not a bad thing to me because it at least reduced the chance of getting soggy, but could be a minus to you). I wish Yelp allowed half-star reviews because technically I'd want to give this a 3.5 star, reduced rating due to it being weak in flavor, but I still can appreciate the price was reasonable for the big quantity.
