16 Options for an Amazing Portland Dining Month | Eater Portland

"A modernist hotel lobby with full tables and booths acts as La Neta’s dining room, and the relatively new Mexican restaurant is going all out for its first Portland Dining Month. Two or three items are available with each course, including a lovely looking pork shoulder pibil, and the dinner ends with ice cream sandwiches. For those looking to make a full night of it, there’s also a wine pairing offered for $17." - Alex Frane

A Newbury Street favorite for Mexico City–style tacos, quesadillas, and griddled burritos. Frequently cited by the Boston Globe and local guides, it’s a relaxed, independent counter-service spot ideal for a quick, flavorful meal.

Ordered the queso dip for an appetizer and was brought cheap concession stand nacho cheese…. Also the enchiladas did not have shredded chicken and the green sauce was watery. Cannot recommend these items. Waitstaff were nice, but overall slow and it wasn’t very busy.

Google
Had an allergy but trouble with staff understanding. Was charge 10 dollars more and did not provide a print out acting as if they did not understand. Order corn and one taco . We also order platter but waitress was hard to understand. Portions are small. Taste was not bad.

Google
Exceptionally good gourmet tacos. Creative and delicious recipes and ingredients. It was bustling when we went on a Saturday night, with lots of happy people munching away and socializing with their friends. Free water would have been nice, but I understand their reluctance to add to their dish load--unless they are just trying to make more money. But I doubt that because the prices per taco were modest and excellent value given their quality. Lots of people seemed interested in getting fancy drinks from their expansive menu too. It was a very satisfying meal and I'm so glad I went.

Google
La Neta on Newbury St. serves up some really tasty, authentic Mexican food. The free chips and salsa were a nice touch—fresh and flavorful. I ordered the Al Pastor Quesadilla Sonoran-style, which was delicious, though the portion felt a bit small for the price. If you are hungry, I recommend the burrito or chilaquiles, which my friends got and made me slightly a little jealous! The atmosphere is cozy and well-decorated—think warm, inviting, and not overly flashy or "Instagram-bait." I do wish they offered Mexican Coke, but their agua fresca was refreshing and well-made. Having tried their sister restaurant, I do think their portion and food quality is worth the price, especially on Newbury St. We came with a big group on a Sunday morning, and it wasn’t too crowded, but I can imagine it gets packed (and maybe hard to find seating) on weekend nights. Overall, I’d return and recommend for others to try.

Google
A bit pricey but my Mexican wife approves. Good selection of food and drinks. In the summer time ii is worth waiting for a sidewalk table to eat and people watch.

Google
Great vibes and good service! La Neta is a small and cozy spot. The food was amazing and I like how the guac is not charged extra. However, I would not recommend the quesadilla. It was $16 compared to a $14 burrito yet the burrito seemed to be a substantially larger portion. Would recommend tacos or burritos. Also, free chips were a huge bonus too!!

Google
Stopped by La Neta after a long run with a big crew, and they were super accommodating, which we really appreciated. I had the carnitas burrito—solid choice with good flavor—and the salsa had a nice little kick to it. The fresh jamaica juice was refreshing and not overly sweet. Overall, a good experience and a spot I’d definitely hit up again.

Google
Great tacos! Tried the chicken, carne asada, and pinche taco. The chicken was by far the best. I also got hot sauce on their side. Looked like something they made. Was spicy but good flavor. Also got a mocktail margarita that was pretty decent. A great place in Boston to get good tacos.

Yelp

Yelp
Stop by as we were looking for a quick snack on a Sunday afternoon. Had a seat on the sidewalk, friendly service for sure. The margarita was delicious with fresh lime juice and the queso dip and chips perfect for a snack.

Yelp
Carne asada tacos were tasty, margs were good and the service was great! Food comes out fast. Perfect spot for a quick bite if you're craving authentic Mexican

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Hands down the best taco I have ever had. Carne Asada was so flavorful. Fun casual atmosphere inside or out

Yelp
I took my daughter on a quick trip to Newbury Street in Boston and we found this little hole in the wall taco shop. Our server was awesome - he was so good to my 4 year old who is certainly going through a shy phase. He gave her some candy to go along with her meal and was super friendly. We just wanted to make a quick stop, so I just ordered 2 tacos - 1 Barbacoa and 1 Chicken... if I remember correctly. What I do remember is both of them were very good - super flavorful with perfectly cooked tortillas. My daughter got a shredded beef taco with cheese, and that was also really good (she didn't finish hers, so I did the honors). If you're looking for a quick stop for tacos while walking through Newbury, I'd definitely recommend this place. Fast, friendly, and good food!

Yelp
Decent spot to stop at when you're shopping. The chips and salsa were quite addicting and they are generous with guacamole! The horchata was pretty good too. Food is nothing to write home about but overall I did have a good filling meal! Cramped space with not much seating (especially winter with no outdoor seating).

Yelp
I visited La Neta on a Sunday evening around 6pm and it wasn't too packed. Located on Newbury St., I wasn't looking to wait in any lines and just wanted to grab a simple dinner to-go. I ordered 2 carne asada tacos ($6 each). The service was quite fast and my order was ready in under 10 minutes. The employees were quite nice as well. I really enjoyed my taco and it was the perfect size to sate my appetite. Overall, a nice place to go for a casual, quick bite to eat.

Yelp
Excellent service. Our waiter was super personable and gave us great information. Food was delicious. Two California girls eating Mexican food in Boston and thoroughly enjoyed. Loved the Mezcal margarita!

Yelp
Had come back after a good experience a few years ago. Was super regretful unfortunately. Ordered a corona, they were all out so we had to get a corona light and it did not come with a lime (big bummer). Then when I went to get a water they only offer bottled. So not only is it bad for the environment, it's just a money making scheme so I don't love that. I ordered a coke and was expecting Mexican coke from a Mexican restaurant but was disappointed when I was brought out a standard can. The complimentary dip was not very good and queso dip was a bad version of nacho cheese. The churros were the only redeeming quality of the evening however half of them were hollow inside. Such a bummer because I really enjoyed this place prior

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
The tacos are amazing, great flavor and a good variety to pick from, they may be a little pricey but worth the taste. Service is good and so are the vibes.

Yelp
Yummy tacos right in the middle of Newbury, so a great reprieve from the overpriced patio experiences on Newbury. $6 tacos and horchata? Definitely a vibe when you're starving from shopping / window shopping. It's not mind blowing but they do have horchata which is so hard to find at most Mexican restaurants in the area - so major points for that!
google avatar

Julianne W.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a couple tacos on a long day out, and they were good! The chips and salsa were to die for, the salsa was unique and seemed to have corn in it. The tacos were good, Barbacoa flavoring was interesting and not my favorite...seemed like there was an added spice that I wasn't expecting. I would definitely come back, because it was reasonably priced for good quality tacos! The service was mediocre, but it was a slightly busy day out on Newbury.
google avatar

Salma S.

Yelp
La Neta is my favorite restaurant in Boston. The food is to die for - every time I go, I'm blown away. I always order the tacos, and my go to are the pollo, birria, and carne asada tacos. The flavor is always perfect and the food tastes so fresh. Something I also really love about this place is that you order each piece individually, so you can mix and match. The vibe of the restaurant is also so cute - I just wish it was a bit bigger, because it's so popular and can get super crowded! The staff are very friendly, and the food comes out quite quick. La Neta is always the first restaurant I take anyone visiting Boston to, and I 100% recommend it to anyone looking for authentic, delicious Mexican food.

Yelp
If you want a quick and affordable lunch on Newbury St, La Neta is a solid option. Despite declaring occupancy in just a small room, seating is adequate and the decor is vibrant. The service was exceptional, especially for how small the restaurant was. The staff is very friendly and are happy to answer any questions regarding the menu. I didn't expect to be served as most burrito joints have the self-serve routine going on, so this was a pleasant surprise! As for the food, I've definitely had better burritos, but because of how good the service was it almost made it seem like it tasted better. I liiiiike this psychology. I went for the classic chicken burrito, and the ingredients were all very fresh, though it was a bit on the dry side (specifically the chicken). The complimentary chips and yellow salsa were pretty good, and I liked the heat from the salsa. The portions are also very good for the price, which bumps up the value in my book. We finished lunch off with a slice of Tres Leches cake (my first time trying it), and it was amazing! Pretty reasonable price wise and not overwhelming sweet for the sugar content.

Yelp
Dined in here several times after shopping on Newbury- we enjoyed their tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chips and salsa. Ambiance is casual and cheerfully decorated. Wait staff can be a bit distant especially when it's busy, but generally the service is efficient. That said, when we ordered delivery, they missed our $14 chips and guac Big sad!!!

Yelp
We started with drinks: a passion fruit mojito and two margaritas with salt. They were decent but didn't quite hit the mark. For food, we ordered tacos and an Al Pastor burrito. The tacos were alright, but the burrito was disappointing. Though the meat was tender, the seasoning lacked depth, the rice was hard and flavorless, and the guacamole was bland. Thankfully, the churros were a nice surprise - perfectly crispy and sweet. Overall, not worth the price, but at least we ended on a good note with dessert.

Yelp
The tacos here at La Neta are solid. Everything I ordered came out pretty well. The steak plate was plentiful with rice, beans, pico de gallo, and guacamole. The shrimp chipotle and fish tacos are yum, I had fillings fall out from all sides of my mouth, which gave me a chuckle. Plus you get complimentary chips and salsa, which is always a plus. The space is limited and tight, and no RSVPs, so get there early if you want a seat inside. Plus because this spot is on Newbury Street, prices aren't cheap.

Yelp
Walking on Newbury St in the rain and we ducked into La Neta for a quick bite. I absolutely loved the Mezcal-Rita - they even made it spicy for me with a jalapeño and tajin on the rim. The complimentary chips and salsa were very good. Kids liked the Birria and fish tacos. Would definitely come back to try some of their other cocktails. Impressive tequila and mezcal collection on the wall. Quirky, fun decor.

Marie C.

Yelp
The food was so yummy, first time trying tacos and it was SOOO good. Highly recommend.

Maria D.

Yelp
Moving here from SoCal the worst tacos ever! And so rude not welcomed at all. Charge for chips and salsa?!! Take a page out the most hospitable and talented Mexican restaurants and people in Cali. You will not make it in Boston. Seriously very bad and rude experience!!
google avatar

Pooja K.

Yelp
Terribly dry and insipid chicken taco. Only things that were okay were the accompanied pico de gallo and guacamole sauce. Behind the register you can see all the cooks putting the ingredients together and I saw one reach for their phone with the gloves on, then back to making food without changing gloves. Cell phones are full of bacteria. Anyway would've ignored the rest of the food was good but it was not. Also 4$ for a can of coke ?!
google avatar

Nikita S.

Yelp
Didn't particularly enjoy your experience here. The menu offers decent options, both for food and drink, and there are a couple of vegetarian options parentheses which are all grilled vegetable based). The service, overall was pretty subpar. Our waiter took a while to take our order and seem to have a really difficult time taking our order even though we were ordering off the menu with no substitutions. The food did come out quickly but didn't come with any napkins or silverware (which we had to ask for after some time). Then, it took a while for us to get the check before leaving. We got the nachos which had really fresh and delicious tortilla chips, but the toppings were pretty sparse and the cheese felt like it could've come out of a can. we probably won't be back. P.s. there are tortilla chips and salsa for the table which is always a perk
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Outstanding fish taco and steak taco. Owner let us try some different hot sauces and shared the secret to the amazing warm salsa served when you arrive at the table. Service was outstanding and the inside of the restaurant is really fun. Feels like you are in a different country.
google avatar

Alison R.

Yelp
Great spot with colorful metal stools, long tables, and painted brick (of course) wall. Fab mezcal margarita, just-right-amount-of-spice salsa, and delicious tacos (pinche and pork achiote). Friendly server. Would definitely recommend to taco fans.
google avatar

Hallie L.

Yelp
Both the wait to enter the restaurant and the wait to get our food was very long. They offered no tap water, only bottled water priced at 2 dollars. We were then overcharged for 3 water bottles when we only ordered and received 1 bottle. The tacos themselves were good but underwhelming compared to the price and the service was good, but the reasons above made the overall experience very unpleasant.

Tali R.

Yelp
We were told they had no tapwater, even though they clearly had plastic cups and ice. This was clearly just a ploy to make us buy drinks. We were also not told until after the meal that there was a 20% gratuity included for larger parties. Dishonesty reigns at La Neta.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Atmosphere: both indoor and outdoor seating available. The service was good considering it's on a busy part of Newbury -- we were seated pretty much immediately upon arrival. But they didn't give us napkins until we explicitly asked for them. Food: Considering my 2 tacos ended up being $15 with tax and tip included, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of flavor. The food also got cold pretty fast. By the time I was halfway through my first taco it'd already turned cold. The birria was a bit underwhelming and the taco skin fell apart in my hands immediately upon contact.

Darris A.

Yelp
They use movie theatre cheese for their nachos with stale chips and dont even offer cup of waters at a sit down restaurant. Horrible experience and never coming back here again
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
Great food and wonderful service! Surprised by the lower reviews because it was wonderful! I had a salad and my husband had the carne asada tacos. We will be back!
google avatar

Toni R.

Yelp
Loved the vibes inside the restaurant and the drinks were phenomenal. We called just 15mins yes before arriving and we were seated without issues. We were a party of 6 and it was good we came a little early cause the restaurant got fully packed an hour in. The service was good and I really wanted to love this restaurant more but the food was a little bland. Particularly disappointed with the birria as the broth for it was also quite tasteless. Burrito was a little better maybe because there were more stuff inside. Would probably come back for the margaritas and their burrito but will skip the tacos next time.

Ione D.

Yelp
For such a low price, the food is delicious and you get a lot of it! Service was fast and good. It's a small little place, but it packs a punch.

Patricia M.

Yelp
Servers are nice and attentive. Seating options are outside and inside the restaurant. The vibe is calm and is a nice place for a quick lunch with a friend. The steak taco was nice and fresh, the birria tacos were good, not the best but still tasty.
google avatar

Alexia J.

Yelp
Really disappointing. We ordered their "queso" and it turned out to be the nacho cheese you get when you buy "nacho" lunchables... a complete disgrace to Mexican cuisine. I ordered the Lorenza taco and it was just alright. Nothing special. My friend ordered barbacoa burrito and she rated it 4/10. My other friend ordered barbacoa tacos and would rate it 3/10. Waaay too much meat. And $5 per taco!? Not good. Do better La Neta
google avatar

Araceli C.

Yelp
Afther I saw in Instagram I decide come from chicago and try it I order chilaquiles and taco Dorado ahogado And my friend 2 asada tacos whit cheese on a flour tortilla and also 1 Jamaica margarota and 1a traditional margarita Tacos ok Chilaquiles gringo style dry on the sauce black avocado and lot of beans I Also saw one of the line cooks try use the batroom whit the apron on wth.......

Sandor K.

Yelp
Have to been to La Neta a few times. Positives are definitely their capri-sun like margaritas which can be taken to go. And their unique protein fillings. With that said, today's burrito and chips/guac were not great! While everyone is allowed bad days, the chips were stale, the burrito meat fillings were cold and overall this was a below average burrito experience. If you're into Boston - looking for a quick burrito I would target Los Amigos (Surf & Turf burrito), El Pelon (get the El Guapo burrito).
google avatar

Tyler J.

Yelp
Omg get the hot hot sauce!!! The pastor is amazing. The service was great. We really enjoyed eating on the patio.

Frank W.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and head to pizza across the street. Queso is simply nacho cheese like a concession stand. Put chips and salsa on table immediately not telling you it's a charge. Bottled water. $4 soda water. Below avg food and service. Bummer.

Burt R.

Yelp
Greasy. Multiple items missing from the order. Lower quality than Taco Bell. Stay away
google avatar

Annie F.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick Mexican meal with a margarita on Newbury that won't have a wait, this place is for you. However, we thought the food was underwhelming. I frankly have had better, cheaper food at Chipotle. We didn't go into the restaurant, but the atmosphere sitting outside on Newbury was excellent, which is why I'm giving this three stars. It has good people watching, and I've never seen someone wait for a table. The tacos were fine, the meat was reasonably seasoned, but they overbaked the tortillas. The avocado and corn salad was average, the flavors and ingredients didn't really meld together. What was surprising is that they don't have tap water! It was bottled water only which I found off-putting.
google avatar

Deondre J.

Yelp
The Larenzo taco was my favorite! The other 2 tacos was good! The gac was okay, and the cheese dip taste like movie theater cheese. Personally, that's not a bad thing, but for $6 I can honestly say I will go back there again! I want to try the other tacos, and see what the cocktails is talking about! P.S. there's no Taco Tuesday special, maybe one day in the future

Yelp
This spot has a great outdoor seating area on newbury street. When the sun is shining and it's warm, it is a very fun looking spot. The staff were quite nice and got me seated pretty quickly. They have a nice contactless menu and I was able to pay quickly as well on a card swipe they brought to my table which was nice. I got the chips and salsa to start with. The salsa was quite interesting, it was on the more watery side of salsa with little to no chunks of anything in it. It was quite mild on the spice level as well. It was good but don't think I would get it aga I got the al pastor, caramelo and chorizo tacos. The al pastor was really flavorful. The meat was very well seasoned and the tomato and guacamole on it went well with every bite. The caramelo taco was alright. I was expecting it to be cheesier but the beef did go well with everything else added to the taco. The chorizo taco is one I don't think I'd get again. The meat itself didn't seem that flavorful compared to other chorizos I've had and the toppings were not as complimentary as the other two. I might come here again if the weather is nice out and there is no wait but I think I would only get the al pastor again and try two different tacos when I do.
google avatar

Emma M.

Yelp
Cute and pretty good food / alcoholic drinks but they do not serve tap water. You must purchase a plastic water bottle if you want any.

Georgiana G.

Yelp
Received incorrect drinks order. The Al Pastor was oily/salty without much other flavor. The shrimp taco was worse--the taste of shrimp was masked by the amount of cheese.

Magali G.

Yelp
As a Mexican who grew up on the US-Mexico border, it's so hard to find authentic and good tacos in the Boston area--but I found that at La Neta! The flour tortillas are some of the best I've had in the area, and I almost cried when I had the cochinita pibil. Plus, the drink menu is top notch--we got a carajillo (where else can you get one in Boston?!) and tamarindo margarita and both were excellent. The salsa that came with the complimentary chips and salsa was so good. Can't wait to come back here!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Probably the best Burrito place in Boston. Try it if you have a craving for carnitas.
google avatar

Andres D.

Yelp
High quality but pricey Mexican food. I got a taco and a quesadilla since the servings are pretty small (you only get one taco in an order instead of the standard two tortilla thing and the quesadilla entre is still just two small tortillas in top of each other). Both items were excellent! I also got a michelada which was good and tried the margaritas (which they have many varieties of)--also good. For Boston I feel it is quite good Mexican food. The service was a bit slow but the food came out fast after we ordered. The indoor vibes looked nice and the outdoor patio was very cute. Great spot at the end of newbury street!
google avatar

Karindy L.

Yelp
Food here is awesome! Everything is really tasty and good quality! The staff is really funny, and they care about you
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
For tacos, my reference is other tacos I've had in Boston. As a Los Angeles native, it would not make sense to use southwest US/Mexican tacos as my reference...because I would be disappointed every time. La Neta joined back bay in the past year. It's in a great location on Newbury St. with plenty of outdoor space. The food is okaaaaaay. I had the fish taco, Lorenza taco, and the "corn on the cob." - The corn I loved since it was covered with a chipotle crema. - The fish in the fish taco needed more seasoning. Any bite that didn't have a lot of the chipotle dressing was very blah. - The Lorenza taco came with a very generous portion of steak, but the steak itself was meh.

Yelp
Obviously we're as far from the border as possible-- in the middle of liberal America , in New England weather. But , as a Chicano this place reminds me of that taco truck my younger cousin opened -- still original -- experimented a lil . Got the salsa down , got the Jamaica (hibiscus water) down . The vibes are quaint -- the music needs to stay what it is . Easy eat, for back bay. Demolished my food so no Pic ):
