A South Street Italian Eatery La Fourno Has Closed its Doors | Eater Philly

"A BYOB Queen Village Italian eatery that served Philly customers for nearly 25 years, I remember La Fourno for its brick-oven pizzas and homey Italian dishes; it prided itself on serving authentic Italian eats and operating daily as a BYOB with no uncorking fees, and was a highly regarded, down-to-earth spot for unpretentious pizzas and pastas. Building owner Tom Vasiliades told The Inquirer the restaurant could no longer compete in the area and plans to renovate the space and re-open a simple pizza and salad spot next year." - Audrey Carleton

Incredible … amazing food, great crew. Atmosphere is so cool- like being in Rome Desserts are out of this world We’ll be back for sure!! Hopefully sooner than later! Also- loved the little book that the bill came in. Spent a few minutes reading it- gotta get myself a copy haha

Google
I think everything was great in my own experience. The pasta and food came out fairly quick. The pasta was cooked to perfection, not too chewy or soft. The bills for 5 people was around 160 including tips which is not bad at all. We got the mussels appetizer, it has a clean taste, pretty light appetizer to get started with. I also got the special gnocchi of the restaurant, and all of my other friends got the carbonara and spaghetti meatballs, eggolant parm. They said it was good, I think my gnocchi and carbornara was the best one out of all the dish. The atmosphere and the decorations in here is very chill and cozy. Would be a cute date for the couples.

My dish tastes like Home! The homemade pasta was light and smooth. The sauce was just right, not too thick and not too thin. The sweet small restaurant made you feel like you were visiting someone’s home. I would definitely return to experience true homemade Italian dishes.

Google
The food here is absolutely amazing and the staff is so friendly. We come here probably 2 times a month on date night and have yet to have anything but a world class meal. The gnocchi here is maybe the best I’ve had inside or outside of the USA and eggplant parm is spectacular! It’s BYOB as well which makes significantly less expensive compared to other Italian restaurants. Highly recommend everyone put this on your list if you are visiting Philadelphia!

A Delightful Dining Experience La Nonna Ristorante BYOB, located at 214 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147, is a family-owned gem where fresh pasta is made daily. The light and pillowy gnocchi come in a variety of imaginative sauces. We tried the Garlic Alfredo Gnocchi, which was very filling and tasted terrific. The veal parmigiana was a standout, with a crisp, flavorful crust and a light homemade sauce. The Pompano special was another highlight, perfectly cooked with gnocchi and vegetables in a delicate white wine and garlic sauce. For appetizers, we enjoyed the crispy but not oily calamari, grilled octopus with capers and garlic for a salty-lemony taste, and Burrata with soft cheese, grilled peppers, and tomato. Our meal ended on a high note with their light and flavorful tiramisu, lemon cake, and ricotta pistachio cake, the perfect finale to a satisfying dining experience. Stepping into La Nonna Ristorante BYOB, you're not just a guest, you're part of the family. The owner, a beautiful young woman, has inherited her father’s legacy of hospitality and a keen eye for quality. Her dedication to ensuring every guest feels welcomed and valued is evident in every aspect of the dining experience.

Google
Delicious | Fresh Ingredients | BYOB La Nonna is now one of favourite Italian restaurants I’ve been to! All ingredients/dishes were so fresh, delicious and high quality. Service was attentive without being annoying and very nice. The restaurant itself is super cute inside. For apps we enjoyed the Bruschetta & Burrata. Both were great, in particular the Burrata was so delicious - probably the best we’ve ever had. For mains, we had the lasagne and meatball. I’d highly recommend the lasagne, meat balls were still good but definitely not as tasty. We had an espresso to finish which was yum. It’s very reasonable priced once you add the BYOB factor. Overall, a fantastic evening!

Google
I loved La Nonna. The service and food were much better than I expected. Is it the best Italian restaurant in the city? I don't think so, but I would definitely put them in the top 5. Primary reason for that is the homemade pasta. Most restaurants use the commercial boxed pasta but not here...and you can really taste the difference. I highly recommend checking this place out. Especially if you like BYOBs. 2 things to note: They only take cash and venmo. No credit cards. Also, do not confuse this place with Little Nonna (do not go there).

Google
We arrived with serious appetites fresh off the plane - my husband was dressed down to say the least and the crew were still welcoming ! The food was outstanding - the artichokes , the ceasar salad, the fried calamari some of the best we have had ! And the pasta special with shrimp and crab was light and delicious ! Highly recommend ❤️ and we could hear one another speak ! And - not a lick of foodie pretentiousness tho a foodie would be well satisfied with the meal !

Yelp
Loved the food and service was great. We got burrata and calamari for appetizers. Both excellent. The linguini with crab and shrimp was my favorite. The eggplant parmigiana was also very yummy. Also got the gnocchi bolognese and shrimp fra diablo also very tasty. I would give 5 stars if the focaccia bread was served warm and soft. Maybe just my preference though.

Yelp
BYOB! Location: 2nd and South Street - Plenty of street parking available. Inside/Decor: The space is small and intimate. You might have to squeeze past tables, but it adds to the cozy vibe. Service: The service was excellent! I visited on a Friday night, so it took a little longer to be seated and take our order, but the staff was friendly and attentive. Food: Generous portions! Most entrees can easily be shared between two people, so keep that in mind when ordering. Food Breakdown: APPS: -Burrata: I enjoyed this appetizer. The portion was great, and the cheese tasted fresh. -Roman Artichokes: These are perfect if you enjoy a tangy sauce. I liked them a lot. PASTA: -Linguine Shrimp Fra Diavolo: I highly recommend this. The shrimp were jumbo, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The sauce was just right. My only wish is that they had sprinkled some Parmigiano Reggiano on top. -Eggplant Parmesan: This was nothing special. We ordered it because the one we initially wanted wasn't available, so it didn't stand out much. DESSERT: -Panna Cotta: The thickest panna cotta I've ever had. I'm not usually a fan of panna cotta, so I can't judge it too harshly, but it was rich and creamy. 7.9/10

Yelp
Where do I begin with this absolute gem!! Everything about La Nonna was on point. Appetizers and entrees were delicious. The burrata was tasty and perfect for sharing. The bolognese had one of the best sauces i've ever tried, perfect balance of tangy with strong hits of fresh tomato. And the portions?!? Insane for the price. This might have been the first time I left an italian spot in philly with a takeout box! The service was honestly one of the absolute best i've seen. Our server was incredibly sweet and attentive!! The space is also beautiful, very cozy and decorated creatively. I cannot wait to come back and try more dishes!

Yelp
Easily one of the loveliest restaurant experience I have had in Philly. This place is small, cozy, feels like family business. The appetizers were all spectacular - burrata, caesar salad and calamari with marinara sauce are all delicious. We ordered so much appetizers that we are actually half full when the pasta came out. I love my fettuccine bolognese, it came out piping hot and so flavorful. My bf loves his lasagna too. They are BYOB so bring a bottle of wine! The staffs are very pleasant and attentive. We were too full to try desserts but they have tiramisu and panna cotta. Would def come back here.

Yelp
Cancel your flight to Italy and come here instead!!!! What a gem in the city. First of all, the atmosphere is so romantic and the lighting, decor, and music makes you feel like you just transported to Italy. The food was phenomenal. Every dish was mouth watering and even though i'm so full, i'm still thinking about how soon i can eat my leftovers. The gnocchi bolognese was the best dish by far, the chicken parm being right behind it with their rich marina sauce. The ricotta gnocchi in pink sauce with shrimp was extremely dense and in my opinion is better to share since it's so heavy but the blush sauce was heavenly and had me taking a spoon to it. The caesar salad was a little anchovy heavy for my liking but it was still good. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Really lovely quiet dinner before a show. Service was quick and friendly, with delicious dishes all around. Short rib risotto did not disappoint, will definitely come by again when we're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Rula R.

Yelp
Love the ambiance and the authentic, simple Italian restaurant vibe. I highly recommended La Nonna for a cozy byob night.

Marissa R.

Yelp
The fresh pasta was awesome! They had some great specials, tho for certain specials like the pre fixe menu, the whole table has to order it. I really enjoyed the smaller and more intimate setting of this place. It is BYOB which is a nice touch
google avatar

Carlos M.

Yelp
Came here after originally wanting sushi and not wanting to wait 2 hours at the Royal Izakaya. We found it walking around South Street and came in with no reservations and were seated within 5 minutes. It is BYOB, so we could not have any wine as we were not prepared, but I guess it really saved us some money. The BEST Lasagna I've ever had anywhere! Wow, the past was cooked to perfection and the sauce was amazing with nice chunks of meat. Great portion, great texture! My wife had the Cacio e Pepe which was also delicious! Very small cozy ambiance, no credit cards accepted but they do take Venmo, so that helped.
google avatar

Jim R.

Yelp
Overall I was not impressed. The place looks great - the staff very nice - the food was good but nothing that would have me returning soon. The complimentary pickled string beans with cheese to sprinkle on top was good as was the Artichoke appetizer. The entrees (Eggplant involtini, Eggplant Parmigiana and the Special Gnocchi with Shrimp) all looked great but for me weren't really anything special. Byo - cash or Venmo.
google avatar

Connor H.

Yelp
Should preface this review by saying the real issue is I don't really enjoy byob. Something about having to bring your own wine or beer that kinda cheapens the experience for me. This place is ok. It doesn't wow like some of the other Italian places in Philly. But it'll do.
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
Authentic Italian, simple, and delicious food. It really tastes like your nonna's recipes. The service was great too.
google avatar

Tyler D.

Yelp
Our dinner at this lil Italian spot La Nonna was great. The space is cute and well decorated, it's great for a night out. Our service was friendly and the food came out fast. The food was great and a nice portion. I got lasagna, its meat sauce was really good. The lasagna was layered well. My date got gnocchis and said the texture of the noodles were perfect. 4/5 sfor the food. Depending on what time you come the place can fill up so make sure you have a reservation. If you do just walk-in it needs to be right when the restaurant opens. We had tried to walk in in the past and couldn't get a table. This place is BYOB, they only take cash or Venmo.

Patrick Z.

Yelp
Amazing food and ambience. Had a Caesar Salad and a veal chop. Excellent service Strongly recommend anytime k

Yelp
Excellent food and service. BYO and kid friendly. Will be back. Gnocchi were perfect and short rib special was melt in your mouth!
google avatar

Melanie J.

Yelp
Best Italian I had in Philly, authentic and hearty. I got the lobster ravioli which was light on the lobster but tasty nevertheless.
google avatar

Alana K.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here on a Sunday night for dinner. The restaurant is BYOB, so we brought a bottle of wine with us. The inside of the restaurant is cozy and homey. Our waitress was really nice and everyone in the restaurant seemed to be in good spirits. I ordered the short rib off the specials menu. It was good, but not outstanding. It came with risotto and broccoli, which were good, but a little plain. Overall, the ambiance of the restaurant and the service were the best parts.

Alain D.

Yelp
Very average quality Italian food for a very overpriced restaurant. We were seated in the patio that is located at the end of a convoluted narrow alley, very claustrophobic for an outside space. .
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
Went with my gorgeous husband for dinner. I got the special, rigatoni pesto, and he got La Nonna's Gnocchi. Both dishes were fabulous. Nice staff, nice inside. To be honest, the bread they served was stale and crumbly, not good. But for a date night with my favorite human being I couldn't have asked for more.
google avatar

Bradley C.

Yelp
this restaurant has a remarkably excellent level of service. The staff is kind helpful and has good advice on what to select on the menu in my opinion. The best dishes we had included the Parmesan and linguine with clam sauce. 5 star outstanding!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Understand the great reviews. Service, vibe, and cost were all outstanding. Icing on the cake was the beautiful lady sitting at the back table.
google avatar

Marcel M.

Yelp
Order delivery from here often and it's always consistent and duhlicious. Highly recommend the rigatoni and the arancini is to die for

Devon M.

Yelp
This was a fantastic little BYOB that we found! The arancini was great to share and bread was so fresh. The gnocchi bolognese did not disappoint - the gnocchi was some of the best I've ever had!! Perfectly doughy yet fluffy at the same time. Service was quick as well!

Michael K.

Yelp
Excellent scallops and octopus appetizers on special. Very nice presentations and accoutrements. Exceedingly nice staff and excellent service.

Yelp
We had an early reservation on Saturday at La Nonna and it did not disappoint! The servers were very friendly and attentive. Since it is Valentine's Day weekend they had a special menu. We started with the arugula salad which was super fresh and a great portion. I had the linguine with shrimp and crab and my boyfriend had the wild boar ragu. Both were absolutely delicious! Great portions as well. I hate when I receive a very small portion of pasta and that was not the case at La Nonna's. I had a small portion to bring home but ended up finishing it later that night! All of the pasta is homemade as well which was great and one of the reasons I had wanted to try it! The place itself is very quaint and Italian feeling. There were a few things in the restaurant that bothered me, there is an ATM right in the middle of everything and there was an extension cord under our table. There was also a shelving area next to our table with little decorations on it and the light was kind of shining into my eyes. Overall, would definitely go back!
google avatar

Gilberto E.

Yelp
The place brought me back to the city of Florence with their chicken Parma and their gnocchi. The softness of the gnocchi exploded their flavors on my taste buds as if the gnocchi was a sort of aphrodisiac. The pink sauce was trickling and dribbled with goodness. The smell of the entre also brought me back to my time Italy. Service was outstanding. Both waitresses were very kind. 5/5 10/10. Highly recommend.

Bella S.

Yelp
Got the linguine shrimp dish would 100% recommend. Such a fun hole in the wall place.

Richard P.

Yelp
Just a marvelous food experience. I did not finish this review when I started it but all the food was excellent. The waiter was a gem. The place feels like someone's rustic and friendly home. Just go. You will not regret it.

Miranda B.

Yelp
Tonight was my first time eating at La Nonna and it was excellent. I had the eggplant parm which came with spaghetti and homemade sauce. This dish was perfect, the eggplant was cut thinly and the sauce was delicious. The tiramisu was probably the best tiramisu I've ever had. I could literally eat an entire tray. I'll definitely be back!

Sharon I.

Yelp
Our family and friends enjoyed a beautiful wedding shower at the beautiful La Nonna and we were all completely thrilled with the food and service. The owner, Anna, could not have been more gracious and accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious. And our waitstaff were just the best, never did an empty dish or empty glass stayed long on a table. Such a special day. Thank you La Nonna in Williamsburg
google avatar

Eddie K.

Yelp
The calamari taste great and the service awesome! I enjoyed chatting with the owner who is very hospitable.
google avatar

Diane R.

Yelp
This restaurant saved Christmas Eve 2023. With no reservation, my Dad decided he wanted to go out for dinner (not originally planned). La Nonna squeezed us in. We had the fresh fish Mediterranean style(red sauce, onions, olives) For me- this would have been more enjoyable with chicken and pasta. But it was tasty. My Dad had the clams and linguine (white)..., the aroma was to die for and the taste- superb. Appetizer was burrata salad which we split. Most definitely the highlight for me. This is a CA$H only BYOB. ATM inside the restaurant. Oh.. the decaf coffee was hot and smooth.
google avatar

Melanie T.

Yelp
Stopped in for restaurant week with a friend. The place is right on south street, very cozy and BYOB! The servers were fairly attentive. We ordered one appetizer, pasta and entree each. We got the arancini and eggplant dish for apps, wild mushroom ravioli and gnocchi for the pasta and pork osso bucco and white fish for entree. The gnocchi was the biggest gnocchi I've ever seen. The pork was a bit on the saltier side and the fish was delicious. Overall I thought the food was good but nothing really stood out aside from dessert. Dessert is not included on the restaurant week menu and is an extra charge but the chocolate hazelnut cake and limoncello cake were amazing !! Not sure if it was because it was restaurant week that the food was just average because the reviews for this place were really good. Also this place is cash only and they have an ATM inside the restaurant
google avatar

Helene M.

Yelp
Upon entering La Nonna, we were met by the owner's lovely wife that gave us a great table in the back near the kitchen and it was perfect. The food came out in generous portions and excellent taste and the menu had so many yummy choices my friend and I both ordered different entrees so we could share them. everything was amazing. Our servers were friendly and made sure everything was perfect. Five stars for sure!!
google avatar

Allie R.

Yelp
fantastic meal!!! i came for restaurant week and even with the full house the waitstaff was awesome. all kind and attentive. and such a cute interior- cozy and inviting with a gorgeous stained glass window. i got the burrata, the gnocchi, and the eggplant. all great but the gnocchi was the stand out for me. i hope to return so i can try some of the other dishes :-) byob and cash/venmo only- there's an atm inside.
google avatar

Victor J.

Yelp
Great food with attentive service. Bring your own bottle. Food comes out hot sand quickly.
google avatar

Tng L.

Yelp
Food is geeat, flavored, come out a little slow but it's okay. Good amount of portion, I like their carbonara, it is not dry and very flavorful, their gnocchi was really good as well. Service was great, ambiance, atmosphere so chill and cozy. Would recommend.

E W.

Yelp
Really good. Nice people. I enjoy my meal everytime. Excellent value also. The gnocchi is great with blush sauce

Dennis D.

Yelp
La Nonna is just what you want an Italian restaurant to be! Simple but very nice, I wish we had this place in Los Angeles, my wife and I would be there weekly. I went with the Veal Piccata, it was served with broccoli and some artichoke hearts. The veal was tender and the sauce that went with it very nice. Can't wait till I am buck in Philly for work again. I'll be back.

Malik W.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant!!! 10/10 whenever I'm in Philly or have friends in the area will definitely recommend! Food taste was impeccable and the service is elite!!

Liz B.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Delicious bread basket. My daughter got the spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs are so tender and delicious. I got the chicken picatta and they added gnocchi which was insanely good. Tiramisu for dessert was literally perfect amd im very picky about my tiramisu. Will return soon!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Food was out of this world!! Was fortunate enough to go here for restaurant week. The only thing that wasn't pictured was dessert. Everything came out super quick! The service was so exceptionally nice and made it truly feel like we were not being rushed even though we did have a later reservation. The food was so good and I ate until I was so full and continued eating. I was very glad to have wore a dress that day. Not pictured was the affacado to finish this meal. I will definitely be back here for a date as it was so cute inside. Must have: Burrata or ravioli and the sauce the mussels were in was to die for.
google avatar

Manta K.

Yelp
If you have a picture in your head of what a friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant with good food would be, it would be La Nonna. La Nonna in a previous life was a meatball restaurant called "me and mo" however a few years ago the owner changed up the menu and renamed to LN. The food is fantastic, my personal favorite which I never deviate from is the gnocchi. It is home made (you can tell) and never disappoints. I have ordered gnocchi from all different restaurants and La Nonna is hands down the best. My partner enjoyed everything they have tried. The servers are friendly and remember you! A few things to know: -cash or Venmo only (atm machine available) -reservations available on OpenTable -for special occasions there usually is a special limited menu -BYOB -hours are Tuesday - Sunday 5-9:30, closed Mondays -no WiFi
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
Delicious!!!!! Love this place! Gnocchi with the blush sauce is amazing!!! The Shirley temples are also one of the best!!
google avatar

Luba P.

Yelp
Wow, super impressive little Italian BYOB. Everything was seriously fantastic, some of the best gnocchi I ever had (and biggest!). The burrata salad was excellent. It is super cozy and a little rustic. Great atmosphere and service. Highly recommend! Ooo and must get the lemon cake!
google avatar

Irene M.

Yelp
I was looking for a cozy Italian place after another favorite closed and now I found one. My husband and I came here for Valentine's Day and were very impressed with the service, ambiance, and food. The burrata appetizer is a must. They had limited veggie options on their Valentine's Day menu (I believe there are more options on their regular menu) but the eggplant dish I had was tasty. The food came out incredibly quickly. A great cozy neighborhood spot. Cash/venmo only and byob.
google avatar

Kylie B.

Yelp
Amazing family-run, BYOB, old school Italian restaurant in Philly! I had my rehearsal/welcome dinner the night before my wedding at La Nonna and it was beautiful. The service is fantastic along with the price, portions, and quality of the food. Everyone raved about their time spent at La Nonna and needless to say has now become a family favorite. The tiramisu and gnocchi is the best I have ever had! Important to note that this restaurant is cash/Venmo only.
google avatar

Joey S.

Yelp
Great homemade pasta! We started with the bruschetta which was really simple, but delicious and very well done. We also split a half order of the gnocchi, which were some of the best I've ever had! Light, fluffy, a little sticky, and very soul warming. Delicious in the Alfredo sauce. We ordered both of the pasta specials for the evening, one was buratta ravioli and the other fettuccine bolognese. They were both exquisite and came out exactly as advertised. We finished the meal with a lovely slice of the limoncello mascarpone cake, and it was utterly amazing.
google avatar

Laurel H.

Yelp
What a little gem! This is a true family restaurant. The owner, Gianna, was also our server. Her uncle was in the kitchen and dad (now retired) was hanging out at the bar. We had lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and the shrimp gnocchi special. Everything was nicely seasoned and delicious. The ambiance is relaxed and friendly, and the service was perfect. If we lived here we'd be weekly customers! It's BYOB, but there's wine for sale next door. So happy we found this place!
