The Best Tamales in Portland, Oregon and Beyond | Eater Portland

"While many Mexican markets have large, devoted followings in Portland, La Oaxaqueña stays relatively under the radar. However, this market’s selection of banana leaf tamales is very strong, with a nice, luscious texture and plenty of filling. Expect a classic roundup: Pork in chile verde, chicken in salsa rojo, rajas, and sweet corn." - Eater Staff

My first visit. I went there for their thinly sliced marinated beef (I don't remember what it's called). Got some tamales while I was there. The Chicken Red was kinda dry. The Chicken Mole was better. Both had too much masa compared to meat imho, but still good. If the beef turns out good, I will make a special trip just for that, but the tamales I'll only buy if I'm already there. Service was super! Parking is very limited.

Prices? Really? Try running a tiny grocery store and have the same pricing as a large supermarket. It’s ridiculous to rate a family local market because the prices aren’t Winco prices. Adults who attended their high school economics classes know that overhead costs are lower per item the more items you sell.

The tamales are so good. The carniceria in the back has delicious marinated meats and they have a great selection of cheeses and cremas that are hard to find outside of Mexico.

This store is the greatest and I'm sorry to say I just found it. Looking for chilies for an Alton Brown chili powder and they had them all! The Greatest family run store, sweetest ladies were so helpful. GO THERE, you'll love it! Sorry no fotos.

I love this mercado. They have staples I have a hard time finding near me like chayote and ripe plantains that I don’t have to wait to ripen on my counter. The family is so kind and wonderful. The carnecería is good and I love that they’ll give you a big ladle full of their marinade on your meat. I love supporting this market!

Yelp
Que bonita tienda! What a lovely corner store for our products and needs from south of the border food traditions. I've been looking for quality masa and produce for my recipes. Muchas gracias y los tamales ya preparados estan muy ricos. Very friendly family owned energy when I shopped. Glad I found this shop.

Yelp
One of those Yelp hidden gems, they've been in the current location for 20+ years. Tamales, tamales, tamales! Usually four different kinds are available, Jalapeño and cheese or sweet corn are probably the most popular. Value wise - $2.50 at this writing - is tough to beat. Do know these are the Yucatán/banana leaf type, and not what you might find at a typical farmers market. They also offer homemade corn tortillas and hot salsas which pack some heat. It's a grocery store with an excellent variety and additional ready-to-eat hot items. The owners are very kind. My favorite shop in a neighborhood that's been improving.

Yelp
Nice little market of Mexican goods on Cully with a very friendly owner. I go as he offers home made Manteca de Puerca.

Yelp

Yelp
If you're like me, you've driven past the little market at Cully and Wygant without a second glance, assuming it's the kind of place that sells lottery tickets, international phone cards, and beer. That was a mistake I made for 3 years, and then I checked inside. La Oaxaqueña is a serious little Mexican market. Specifically, *Southern* Mexico, Oaxaca. The main thing you'll know this region of Mexico for is Mole sauce, and indeed they have prepared mole sauces in a variety of formats, including jars, spice mixes, and dehydrated paste blocks. I recommend the last, mostly because it includes a local brand. Other things available at this market include prepared masa for making your own tortillas, all the different Mexican spices there are, high-quality locally made tortillas and chips (4 Hermanas and 3 Hermanos), and lots of Latin canned and dried ingredients -- mainly Mexican but even a few other items like Cuban bitter orange sauce. The one thing they're really weak on, though, is produce; you'll want to pop by the nearby Albertsons for that. And no beer, after all. Also, they have pinatas.

Yelp
Amazing staff very helpful. Owner is always trying to help customers look for what they're looking for. They have a variety of Mexican goods from fresh tortillas to Mexican candy to authentic Mexican chips. They also have fresh produce and meat. I really enjoy shopping there every time I'm in the area.
