Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, July 2025 | Eater San Diego

"Pacific Beach —A casual family-owned Mexican restaurant opened in half the space that Oscar’s Mexican Seafood restaurant formerly occupied on Turquoise Street. Las Ola Seafood opened on 703 Turquoise Street, where it leases the space. Juan Cardina owned Tacos Mi Rancho on Cass and Loring in Pacific Beach for 12 years before selling the taqueria in 2009; Cardina worked at the Spot La Jolla for 36 years. Popular menu items include the Cali burrito, surf-and-turf fries, and surf burrito with potatoes, eggs, beans, cheese, and a house-made secret sauce. Don’t skip the fish stew with clams, mussels, and fish — made in house daily." - Helen I. Hwang

We walked in the first time here during 3 days vacation in San Diego by chance as it was late in the evening when we arrived and was one of the few options that we still hade to eat. It was the best that could happen, because the food was amazing 😍. From the free fish/clam soup till the best octopus taco that I ever had ( and I am a sea food and taco lover)the food was amazing. We choose several tacos and all of them were done to perfection. The staff there was super friendly, and food was served in very short time. We enjoyed so much that we had returned there for the second evening, something that we never do in our vacation as we always want to try something new. I the second evening we tried the new Taco el Chingon and was the perfect combination of sea food and veggie. For a food lover - a clear must go place!!!

Went back for my second visit since opening week and quality, portion sizes, taste, etc. are still worth every penny. Got 1 battered fish and 2 shrimp tacos, with a sample of the seafood soup. The tacos are light and fresh yet filling, and highly recommend trying some of the sauces. The seafood soup is great now but is going to be perfect after a surf session in the cooler months. Highly recommend, 10/10 Will be coming back.

The prices, food quality, and service are 10/10. I love that you get a free cup of the BEST seafood soup while you wait for your order!! Every person I’ve met working here is soooo nice and goes above and beyond to make sure you’re happy. Amazing new spot!

Everything 10/10. Omy gosh. The seafood soup- free & delicious. Reminds of soup I had in Jamaica. The food- I got a California burrito with mango Fresca soo good. The flavor was on point in burrito I was left full and only spent $13!! Whaaat! So amazing, will come back again to try all the burritos, ceviche and other things on the menu. Could not recommend enough. Great stop before or after the beach too.

I walked in here thinking I was going to my old usual spot (Oscars), but was thrilled to discover this fantastic, new, family-owned business! What an incredible surprise. The experience started immediately with the warmest welcome. The cashier was super friendly and genuinely seemed happy to have us there. While we waited for our food, they went above and beyond by offering us a cup of complimentary soup—a truly unexpected and thoughtful gesture that immediately won us over. But the star of the show is the food. The tacos were absolutely delicious, packed with the freshest seafood and perfectly seasoned. Every bite was an absolute pleasure. It’s clear this family puts heart and soul into every aspect of their business, from the warm service to the unbelievable quality of the meal. If you're in the area, stop by and support them. Skip the chains, and try this hidden gem. They deserve all five stars and every bit of local support!

Google
Im pretty stingy with reviews but this placed checked all the boxes. Great food with fair prices! I ordered 3 tacos and a torta and all of it was exceptional. They even gave out some free seafood soup which had muscles and clams in it. Great spot for north PB!

Google
A true hidden gem. The food is beyond amazing with each taco carefully constructed and made with the passion of a chef. It’s always a hard to pick from so many good options, but my ultimate pick is the Octopus Taco and La Ola Taco. The friendly atmosphere and smiles give this place a step above the rest. Did someone say Michelin star candidate??

Yelp
These tacos are a hidden gem in San Diego! I'm from Ensenada, Baja California --where the best fish tacos in the world come from-- but in my opinion, these are the best tacos I've ever had, hands down. And it's not just the tacos --the salsas and the aguas frescas are amazing too! From the very first bite, you can taste how fresh the fish is. The tortillas are warm and freshly made, and you can tell everything is cooked with great flavor and love. The place is spotless, and the service is super fast. These tacos make me feel at home --you can tell the team works with real passion to give their customers the best experience possible. Without a doubt, my favorite tacos in all of the United States: fresh, flavorful, and made with love. Coming from Ensenada, I can honestly say these are the best for me!

Yelp
Great tacos! Incredible value for the quality of food for the price. Solid guacamole. Will definitely go here again.

Yelp
A longtime taco shop in the North PB neighborhood was vacated earlier this year. To much uproar, La Ola Seafood opened as the replacement with many of the same mariscos offerings. A new mural was painted on the wall to the right of the entrance in front of the suite. On-site dining was limited to outside stools that were placed adjacent to railings with ledges that served as countertops. The inside only had sufficient space to place an order. The menu screen was to the left when you entered. It hung above a shelf that held a variety of hot sauce bottles. Other than the four breakfast burritos, the vast majority of selections were similar to its predecessor. I selected three seafood tacos for my to-go order... Grilled Fish, Grilled Octopus, and Smoked Fish. The first two were dressed with lettuce, pico de gallo, and avocado. The last one was folded over with fried cheese inside along with lettuce and avocado. I liked the Grilled Fish the best although it was double the price of a Battered Fish version which I thought was steep. The Smoked Fish tasted extra salty compared to the same item I have eaten elsewhere. The service was acceptable as the cashier was pleasant. My food took about ten minutes to be prepared. Parking can be challenging as it's all curbside spaces with a large grocery store lot across the street that you can risk parking there if they are not monitoring. I gave a 3.5 star rating for my experience at La Ola Seafood.

Yelp
Such great food and service. My smoked fish taco was the bomb! The staff was very kind to my children. Love this spot.

Yelp
Since Oscar left, Juan has completely transformed this place. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is better than ever. Juan even offered samples you can tell he puts so much love into everything he makes!

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, way better than the previous owners! Amazing hospitality and super casual hole-in-the-wall vibes. They sometimes serve a complimentary seafood soup while you wait for your food, which always comes out fresh. The Mar y Tierra burritos, tortas, and grilled octopus tacos are incredible! I try new things every time, but I always come back for the Mar y Tierra burrito. Totally worth the two-hour drive. You can even take it to go and eat by the little private beach nearby or enjoy sidewalk dinning.

Yelp
This is my second time coming here since it's opened and I give it a 10/10. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Their ceviche is fresh and delicious, served with plenty of avocado. I also highly recommend the La Ola taco. This place is much cleaner and has better quality food than the previous establishment. Can't wait to try more items on the menu. It's a great new addition for the neighborhood

Yelp
The fish and shrimp tacos and ceviche were delicious! Plenty of avocado. Service was good and quick. It is the old Oscars location.

Yelp
Saw this place by the beach and was able to try a few items. The soup was nice for a late night sip and tasty while the tacos were all stacked with toppings and flavor
