Panadería El Salvador Review - East Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"If the name, menu items, or abundance of patriotic memorabilia didn’t blatantly give it away, this East Hollywood bakery wants you to know that it’s a 100% Salvadoran bakery (and a great one too.) Here you’ll find excellent quesadillas salvadoreñas that are always the right balance of sweet and savory, and a rather sticky and eggy bread pudding with custard and sweet bananas that we usually devour before making it back to the car. There’s plenty more to sample in case you want even more variety, like large sheets of jelly-filled semitas, cheese-stuffed pupusas, and some tall milhojas made from slabs of whipped cream sandwiched between flakey puff pastry." - Sylvio Martins

Google
We're from Canada and do not have anywhere here that serves this kind of bread. My parents were SO excited!! The service was great, selection was great. We had no problem bringing them on the plane.

My spouse is mexiquenses...and have often heard him say that there are no good panaderias here in Los Angeles. After a bit of research, I finally came across Panaderia El Salvador and decided to take a chance and bring home a few selections. I have heard no more such complaints from my spouse. I am happy to have found them, after all.

Google
Historical spot. One of the pioneer Salvadoran businesses in LA. Definitely worth the visit. They have a great selection of traditional Salvadoran baked goods, juices, and snacks.

Google
Food is decent but the service and atmosphere needs work. Tiny place, dine on option isn't worn it and now higher prices

Yelp
I had driven passes this place many times and finally decided to stop and pick up some bread to try. I got a few different ones that came out to a total price that was fair. The breads I got (unsure of the specific name) were a cake looking one with a jelly of some sort in it which I was not a fan of at all. It was super dry, overly sweet and I did not enjoy the filling of the jelly. The other bread was a round one with the top looking like that of a concha which I enjoyed. It was soft and lightly sweetened. I also got a bun that resembles that of a Hawaiian roll which was super tasty and soft. It made me wish I had gotten more. The workers were also nice. I'd come back to try other ones! Bread: 7.5/10 Service: 8/10

Yelp
Doughnut was really hard not worth it waist of time !!! Very greasy I don't understand! They didn't even have hot chocolate!!!! Can't imagine how long their bread has just sat their ! Is this a salvadorian thing ? I'm curious

Yelp
Born and grew up around here and still come back. The quesadillas are flat out the best ones in LA. The other pan that my Tias and mother want here are always bomb: Peperichas, Maria louisas ( I have no clue if im spelling them right) etc etc. Obviously im Salvy and everytime I need that fix or im sent for pan, I come here! Nothing comes close. Fyi the I read the reviews on other yelpers you don't come here for donuts or tamales, you come here for pan. Nevertheless, if you want to sample authentic Salvy bread you come here. Salud!

Yelp

Yelp
I made a trip down to LA to visit home , but my Boyfriend is Salvadorian and he had told me he was craving cheese that he usually has when he's home .I dropped by to buy some seca queso fresco and some other treats that he hadn't had since were in SD for school and there isn't a lot of stores down here that sell it. It was worth the line , they are nice and friendly people , I really loved that they had a lot of things he had introduced me. It really was worth seeing how happy he got when I bought him a WHOLE quesadilla to himself for his cafe . I hope after the quarantine I can bring him to the store and buy more treats ! Thank you

Yelp
Good place. I've always loved their wide selection of pastries and other food from El Salvador. They've always had good variety of food at reasonable prices. However during these Pandemic times they are really taking advantage of the situation. Went there on Saturday 4.18.20 to get some pan dulce and tamales. What a ripoff, pan dulce that usually costs fifty cents, all of a sudden is $1.20. Tamales went from $2.00 to $2.50 - some other pan dulce went from 0.40 to $1.25 each. C'mon guys. Our people are the ones that are suffering by being laid off, cut work hours and their income has been significantly reduced. I understand that costs have also risen, but dont inflate prices like that. Especially in a situation like this. You'll scare away your clientele

Yelp
Love hitting this spot up late at nightie I cant sleep and want a pupusa. My bf loves the pupusas here. They use to open at 4:20 but now they open at 5 due to covid. Love going in the morning and seeing all the hard working Latinos getting food before heading into their jobs.

Yelp
Excelente bakery with fresh goodness daily! This little gem makes a variety of pastries and Salvadorian tamales pork, chicken, and "ELOTE" a must. They also have a small but tasty amount of cooked food which are staples to the Salvadorian culture "casamiento" rice and beans cooked together "plátanos fritos" Fried plantains and of course they'll even serve you a tamal if the appetite should call for it. They also carry a variety of Central American fruit and drinks! Prices are competitive definitely worth the drive from across town traffic or not but comes prepared because finding parking can be a challenge to say the least!

Yelp
Came all the way from San Diego. This is the second time there. They have a huge selection of fresh bread and salvadorian products. I bought semita gruesas y delgadas, maria luisas, quesadillas y queso y crema will be back for more soon. Lastima que no compre mas. Se me termino muy rapido. Hahaha

Yelp
From the outside Panaderia El Salvador looks very promising. The facade has the colors of the Salvadoran flag. You would think that if they were lucky enough to call their place Panaderia El Salvador before anyone else they have to be very good! Sadly, most of the quesadillas were kind of overbaked and mine wasn't as moist as I would like. The second time I came most of the quesadillas were overbaked again. $2.25 for small coffee and quesadilla. They also sell tamales here. I like the interior. It's reminiscent of a good Latin American bakery. The bread is behind the counter and you can see it through the counter/case it is in. However, this place is a real disappointment. I do not know where to go for a great quesadilla that is nearby. It's sad but it may be possible that the Guatemalan bakeries around it may make better Salvadoran quesadillas than these guys! Parking is not that much of an issue as you can find free parking in the surrounding neighborhood usually.

Yelp
Omg! I must give this heavenly place 5 stars! I have been coming here since I was a kid and their pan dulce is bomb! It's so tasty and not as dry or egg tasting compared to other Latinx panaderías. Their tamales are good, but they are filled with lar. The place is a little pricey, but it's worth the spending! Definitely would come here to buy my future BF pan con cafe
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love this place!!! it takes me back to my country buying pan dulce en la tienda de la esquina lol everything that I've tried is delicious they also have tamales that are equally tasteful and the price are very reasonable.

Yelp
Best of the best milojas ever!!! Customer service is awesome the ladies are so wonderful and very courteous. I don't understand why people would say negative comments. Either way my personal experience has been nothing but the best!! I will continue to visit this bakery for the years to come.
google avatar

Hannah L.

Yelp
I came here yesterday, a gringa knowing pretty much nothing, to get some treats for my Salvadorean friend's birthday. The staff was very sweet and helped me pick out some things. I surprised my friend this morning and she was thrilled, especially with the Maria Luisa. Mil gracias!!

Yelp
After almost 2 years my childhood bakery has finally reopened!!! If your familiar with the area you know it's hard to find a Salvadorian bakery area especially ones with good quesadillas(not to be confused with Mexican quesadillas). It bread is just as good or even better since its been a while of not having it. The service is great and just remember people be patient there are only a few workers since they just reopened. For all the new people going to stop by this is a tip. The line STARTS where the drinks are and then you move to the cashier because people are being kind of rude about this saying they were in line and this and that. So to avoid that you can take the tip. I am just so over joyed it finally reopened thank you!
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
This panaderia is awesome! They do great business and have a large selection of different pastries. The prices are definitely reasonable and they take credit card, but it's a $5 minimum in order to use it. Although I don't know the types of pastries I like by name, I do know they are tasty and affordable. Only downfall is parking, but everything else is legit.

Yelp
What do you do when you pass a Salvadoran bakery but are too full off pupusas to eat anything? Get it to go and eat it tomorrow. Duh. Derek Z. advised our entire pupusa group to order the budin and, for a dollar, why not indulge? I ate it for breakfast the next day and it was still really good - reminds me of a firm bread pudding. Even my coworker, who just walking by watching me eat, said it looked good! I'll definitely be back. That budin's super addictive and I want to try the Salvadoran tamales too! Oooh...why must everything good be so far away...
google avatar

Tati H.

Yelp
Ahhh Salvadoran delicacies! Everytime my mom & I go to eat some pupusas at Atlacatl, we always come here for pan dulce. I can see that many people have tried the budin. Maybe that's something I should try since I haven't yet. But for now, I'll go with the other pan dulces that I know. My mom likes Semita Macho, which is the thick semita. It's interesting because sometimes they don't put as much pinapple filling/dulce as you would like as and sometimes it's too much. I prefer the flat Semita. You have a pineapple filling between two flat pieces of bread. It's yummy! Can't go wrong with that and a glass of milk.. The next thing I love is salpores de almidn, I don't even know how to explain it. But these little semi balls of flour/butter melt in your mouth. I love them. The Polvoron from Goldilocks has a similar notion to this for anyone who has tried it.. Sorta.. I once tried milhojas which I for some reason feel i compare to Napoleons (the french pastry). Anyway, the filling I felt was more caramely/sticky..as opposed to creamy...and the layers of puff pastry seemed to be a bit burnt/kind of dry as opposed to melting in your mouth. Anyway, i think I'd rather have the milhojas from Mister Donut than here.. We also like that the Panaderia sells frozen goods such as jocotes, lorocco & nance. They also sell queso fresco which is yummy sprinkled on top of a bowl of rice and beans. I think they also sell Queso Petacones which is an orangy looking cheese in a block. Also delish as well on top of a bowl of rice and beans. I can probably go on and on.. They also have music and traditional crafts from El Salvador. If you go towards the end of the year, literally in December, they give away calendars of El Salvador with pictures of touristic places of the country. Overall, this place is pretty darn good..and cheap.. which is always well received. :)

Yelp
Us Yelpers stopped by here on the way of the Papusa - Paloosa Progressive Crawl. Even from an ASIAN prospective, the BUDIN here was delicious! According to Derek, this pastry that is "similar to a hard custard and made from day old bread mixed with milk, Cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices" and caramelized top is good for any time of the day For $1, you can't beat that! http://www.yelp.com/biz/pupusa---paloosa-uye-progressive-crawl-los-angeles#hrid:zhtnmfsBtzlDjflxaBBKBQ

Yelp
I bought some chicken tamales, and 3 of them had hairs in it!!! So dissapointed since I had already eaten one and it was good. No such luck for my other family members....called the panaderia and the gal that took my call said she would definitely talk to her sup and the cooks about the incident. Hopefully she does follow thru and those cooks keep their hair out of the food, in the mean time I would eat them very carefully, just in case nothing was done about this..watch out dont eat them in dim light, you might end up swallowing a hair!!! As for me I will not be going back...which is too bad since I grew up around that area eating their bread and tamales for years...like I said so disapointed.

Yelp
Fantastic bread pudding (budin), semita was sweet and baked just right, got a couple pieces of pan dulce and they were excellent as well. The place was quite busy when we got there and the staff was friendly and quite efficient. I don't know that i have had Salvadoran baked goods better outside of El Salvador or my mom's kitchen. Place could have used a little clean up work...my only slight complaint...not a big deal though. Oh...got two big bags of stuff for $7 bucks..unbelievable!

Yelp
The charamuscas are delicious! The women working there are very attentive and helpful. My family enjoys all of their goodies.

Yelp
So worth the drive ! Next time bringing a cooler to take some of their cheese - it looked very fresh!

Ed R.

Yelp
Haven't been to many other Salvadorean bakeries, but I have had bread from elsewhere and it's not the same! you can't top the salvi quesadillas, salporas, and budin (pudding)! We've been going there since I could remember and if you are new to the Salvadorean bakery scene, this is the place to start. They also sell some good chicken tamales, have salvi cream and cheese, as well as other salvadorean delicacies. It's also the one-stop place to take the bus in the morning while enjoying a fresh cup of joe. What can I say, this is the best in the west! Street parking only, but don't let that stop you! Now I'm craving a budin...

Marelyn C.

Yelp
I love the Salvadoran pan dulce from here, And the Banana Covered in chocolate! They make really good bread pudding with banana, it is all yummy!!! I can't wait until it opens again!
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
I love this place they have the best tamales and bread, but lately every time I go their shop is closed. Their time says 4:30am-9pm and I go at 7am and their closed I just want to know what is their new opening time. That's why it's not 5 stars.
google avatar

Libby P.

Yelp
This place is not in a cleanish neighborhood but service is great and their fluffy donuts w chocolate frosting are amazing. shhhh, don't tell anyone.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
I have not been in this place in years. I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by and buy some "empanadas." The bread here brings me back child hood memories of when my mother made me come and buy "bolillo." The food here is great. What is not so great is the service. The service I received here today will make me not want to ever come back. The lady that helped me had an attitude with me because I would not buy more than what I asked for. She also got mad at me because I asked if the "bolillo" was soft. With service like this no wonder they are not as busy as it was when I was a kid.
google avatar

Jenny C.

Yelp
This place is awful. The bread is dry, it's not authentic. I tried the Salvadoran bread, so this review is for that bread specifically. Maybe the Mexican bread may be better. But if your looking for Salvadoran bread go to Panaderia Universal. This place does not give justice to its name. They should change the name of the bakery because the Salvadoran bread literally sucks. I will never again spend a dime here.
google avatar

Francisco M.

Yelp
the best pan dulce in LA and the best chicharrones

Helen H.

Yelp
It was hard to find parking but with all being said it is worth it I live in south gate, ca and drive all the way to the bakery. Food and bread is great.

Joshua E.

Yelp
To bad this was a great bakery but it burned down i was a little kid when i started going there with my grandma
google avatar

Derek Z.

Yelp
On the days that i crave my grandmothers home-made tamales but unfortunately she lives 2400 miles away in El Salvador, this is the place that satisfies my urge. The salvi tamales are soft in texture compared with the harder Mexican tamales. They use potatoes, chicken, hard boiled egg, and sometimes olives as the center ingredients. I love coming by on the weekends and buying freshly made tamales for $1.10 each and our version of french bread 5 for $1.00. They also make daily a cheese called cuajada which is light and crumbly. I got my future wife hooked on a pastry called budin ( similar to a hard custard). It's made from day old bread mixed with milk, Cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices. This place sells all kinds of pastries and it gets extremely busy mon thru fri early in the morning since they also sell traditional breakfast to early morning laborers. If you ever decide to stop by, let me know and i will meet you there.

Michael E.

Yelp
The customer service over the phone is awful. Called this location to ask for a number to one of their different locations, was given the wrong number twice and when called back the third time asked for the mgrs name was told that information can not be given. The employee would not give her name and in fact hung up the third time. Just awful customer service.

Martha V.

Yelp
The best panaderia en Los Angeles, Salvadorean bread have a distinctive taste and perhaps if you are not salvadorean and you like the lots of salt on your bread then this place is not for you, but if you are looking for quality bread then this is the place you are looking for, this panaderia is been my source for bread since 1987 and I'll recommend it to anyone.
