Santa Clarita Restaurant Owners Under Fire After They Openly Harassed a Fruit Vendor | Eater LA

"In the viral clip, a sidewalk vendor from La Palma Fresh Fruit was confronted for vending without a license in front of Bergie’s; I documented the vendor repeatedly saying in Spanish, “Aqui no mas vendiendo fruta. (All I’m doing is selling fruit),” and “La gente aca quierre venida a legal (these people want to call the cops).” The videographer attempted to deescalate, and when a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy arrived the vendor was instructed to secure a written permit and move to another location but reportedly received only a warning. The incident prompted strong community support: thousands of locals showed up at La Palma’s new Sand Canyon Plaza location to buy fruit, masked crowds were filmed in follow-up videos, and a GoFundMe started by Nayelie Ramirez, who identifies herself as the niece of the owner, was launched to help the vendors obtain necessary permits; the vendor in the original video has asked not to be named." - Sean L.
