We had dinner here last week. Sometimes we crave Mexican food but unfortunately we don't live in an area where authentic and top-notch Mexican food is available so it is generally a craving gone unsatisfied.
This restaurant secured its spot in the cravings unsatisfied list.
Let me start off with the positives. Our waitperson was lovely. She was knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and efficient.
The chips that were brought to the table were delicious. They were warm, fresh and nicely (but not too) salted. The salsa that came with it was alright; I would have liked more of it and a bit spicier but it was probably, along with the chips, the best part of the meal.
The ambiance was nice enough and what one has come to expect from Mexican restaurants here: festive with boldly colored Mexican design and art work.
Although there were a number of other diners there, the overall sound level was manageable and we were easily able to converse. We were seated at a comfortable booth with lots of space between us and other patrons.
I ordered the mahi-mahi fish tacos that came with a mango salsa. The irony here is that the mahi-mahi was prepared in a blackened "Cajun" style which clearly is not Mexican but I went with it. Nonetheless, I was not a fan of this dish. I am a fish taco lover in general and this was such a disappointment and frankly, kind of weird.
The fish came out in a square shape which was off-putting as it seemed unnatural. I suspect, although I do not know, that this was frozen, packaged mahi-mahi that was "formed" not by hand into the square shape. Oh dear. The mango-pineapple "salsa" was a major disappointment as it was less a salsa and more like chunks of seasoned mango plopped on the fish. I did not see nor taste any pineapple. I have had excellent mango salsa and made some myself...this was not it.
Rice and beans (yawn) accompanied the dish served in a taco shell. They were quite bland.
My husband ordered some kind of combo plate and had been recommended by the server, which he thought was just okay. No sense in describing his dish further as from his point of view, it's just not worth the effort of getting into.
He had a Corona beer to drink and I had a margarita made with pineapple tequila but I couldn't taste any pineapple in it. Is there a pineapple shortage I am not aware of? No discernible taste in the pineapple margarita and no discernible pineapple in the salsa that came with the fish tacos. Hmm...
Despite the nice ambiance, and the lovely waitperson, I don't see a reason to return for what was a very mediocre food experience. In this current era of hyped up food prices, this felt like an unfortunate choice to have spent money. I know that sounds harsh and the prices are not bad here, but honestly, I wish we had gone elsewhere. Live and learn.
