Detroit’s Best New Restaurants, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"La Pecora Nera’s stealthy Italian sub sandwiches made with bread from Rising Stars Bakery, salads, espresso, gelato, and small Italian grocery selections are now available in Birmingham, as of March. Order from the large chalkboard-style menu at the counter where you can watch your sandwich being assembled. The original location opened in downtown Detroit in 2017, followed by a spot in Farmington. Online orders can be placed via Grubhub." - Serena Maria Daniels

I literally love this place and everything about it. The sandwiches are amazing, i can smell and taste the freshness of the olive oil and the customer service is awesome too. Don’t forget to get the cookie because that was amazing too

Google
Perfectly good little sandwich shop. Everything was light and fresh - really hit the spot. If you want to pack your sandwich with flavor, ask for some of the garlic sauce (like a pungent aioli). Everything is made to order so it isn’t a quick stop. But for an easy Sunday lunch it was perfect.

Google
had the turkey hella and everything was so fresh and tasty! we sat and chatted all afternoon in the coziest space and even tried the pumpkin spice cannoli which was so delicious and perfect right before halloween. will definitely be back in the future!

Found this place last week from DD & had to check out the store front!! Fantastic, homemade italian/american sandwiches in the heart of Birmingham. Highly recommended for anyone looking to try something new if you like subs/sandwiches

Writing this review to help the biz: 1. The sandwiches were great so we will be back. 2. There was no one else ordering in front of us when we entered, despite that it took a good 25 mins to get 2 sandwiches due to apparently several online orders chiming in around same time. This is where the staff needs to work on prioritizing food for guests who are at the store. There is no reason guests should be waiting that long for a couple sandwiches while online orders are being made for people who are not present in the store. I get that when you order online you'd like to pickup at a quoted time but part of running a sandwich shop means making food for people who are IN the store and not having them wait extended periods while food is prepared for others who aren't there yet. 3. As we waited several other folks came in and ordered and by the time we left many people were waiting for sandwiches while online orders sat on the counter for people who weren't there. 4. Unrelated but still worth mentioning a rude woman came in and began touching the online orders instead of asking the staff if her order was ready. Also cutting in front of folks who were waiting for orders. So overall good food, staff simply needs some training on prioritization and guest interaction. The guys making the sandwiches were doing a good job and ppl were working hard - hoping you will take this feedback as a way to improve guest experience in future.

Google
INCREDIBLE! Best Italian sandwich shop since I left Chicago. The bread is fresh and crazy well made both airy and expertly seasoned with delicious olive oil. The ratio of meat to cheese, veggie and bread showcases skills and mastery of traditions. The temp is on point and the spice on the muffuletta will make your mouth water. I’m just grateful that whoever worked hard for this place decided to do it in my neighborhood. What a lucky day to find this around here!

Google
This is such a cute spot! Great to get some food to go or to sit in. The sandwiches were delicious and the bread tastes so fresh. Not to mention they were HUGE! We also got the cookies and the cannolis and the chocolate and that hit the sweet tooth perfectly. The owner and the employees were so attentive and wanted to make sure everything was perfect. Excited to come back!

Google
Not many places in Michigan that serve a little taste of Italy with speciality Detroit/ Italian style Sandwiches. Had the mortadella and ricotta (highly recommend!) and the papa Georgio. The service was friendly and helpful with recommendations. It’s also a small place so seating will be limited if you go during peak times. Overall the sandwiches were good and will definitely come back for the mortadella and something new.

Yelp
Stopped in to pickup lunch as I was in the area and had been wanting to give this place a try. Cool little restaurant with some foods for sale as well. There's not much seating, so expect to eat elsewhere or be patient depending on when you go. I was back and forth on what to order; I eventually decided on the Napa Club (chicken based). The sandwich was pretty solid. The chicken had a good amount; taste was fine. The pesto was fantastic. I love a good pesto; this was right up there with some of the best I've bad. The greens were fresh and the avocado was ripe. I have several small criticisms though. I could have used some more avocado, but I could still detect it, so I'm just being a little greedy for that. However, the bacon was undetectable. It had two of the smallest slivers of bacon you'll ever see on it. While I wasn't expecting a baconator amount; a bit more would have actually made it noticeable and gone a long way. The other main criticism would be the bread. The focaccia was good. Potential to be very good. Not dry and decent flavor. Unfortunately, it was cold when I had it and a bit hard. Maybe that's the design, but the bread makes up so much of a sandwich and this was lacking. Oh well. Still a good sandwich. The chocolate chip cookie was next level. Not too much chocolate, but it still had plenty. Perfectly soft throughout (my preference). Good size on it too. Ended up getting a bit sleepy after lol. Definitely get this. Overall, I was pretty pleased with my meal and the friendliness of the staff makes this a place I would try again. If you're in Bham, give this a try. There's a reason this is their 3rd location.

Yelp
Birmingham, Michigan--who knew? I've been around the world and back, but this town is easily one of the fanciest, most polished places I've set foot in. Think designer storefronts, perfectly groomed sidewalks, and a vibe that just screams money. I mean this gives Beverly Hills a run for their money! Right in the middle of all that shine sits La Pecora Nera, a quaint little sandwich shop that almost feels like a secret gem tucked inside the town center. Now, I'll admit it--I'm a sucker for focaccia. That's what pulled me through their doors. I went straight for the prosciutto with fig, a combo I've tried at plenty of spots before. Here's the verdict: overall, a solid sandwich. The sweetness of the fig worked nicely with the saltiness of the prosciutto, but the edges of that focaccia leaned a little too crispy, and a couple of prosciutto slices were tougher than I'd like. Not a dealbreaker, but very much noticeable. Would I go back? Probably. Even if just to grab a sandwich and soak up the opulence of Birmingham's town center....legs crossed, pinkies up ?!

Yelp
THE BIG: Authentic Italian sandwich shop in downtown Birmingham! Cute lil shop inside with classic italian sandwiches on the Schiacciata bread. Street parking available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: This spot reminds me of All'antico Vinaio in Florence. It serves the same tuscan sandwich that reminds me of Italy. For the foods, I came twice in two days. I got the the viareggio and a cannoli the first time. The second time, I got the napa club and a cannoli. The cannoli is very fresh with the filling put in as you order so it doesn't get soggy. My favorite bite was definitely the viareggio. It's the bread plus the fresh meats! I'm a sucker for a good sandwich. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Ultimately for each trip it only set me back around $22 for a sandwich and a cannoli. Very affordable and very delicious. I will be back.

Yelp
Really good sandwiches, the aioli and ciabatta bread are perfect! The portions are on the larger end. The service is usually pretty quick, and you can order ahead or schedule a pickup time, but there's usually a wait during lunch time if you order at the counter. It's a small place and there's only a couple tables and chairs inside.

Yelp
This review is just for the cannoli. I was walking back to my car after stopping at Paris Baguette after work yesterday, and was feeling a little gluttonous (I'm also 7 months pregnant, so I'll use that as my excuse, lol), and saw the cannoli sign in the window, so I stopped in. I've heard of their Detroit location before - apparently they have one in Farmington too - but they're new to Birmingham, when I asked they said they been here 3-4 months. I want to say this is where Planthropie was, but I may not be correct on that. They have the cannoli shells ready to go, and they add the ricotta when you order. You can also choose if you want caramel and/or chocolate sauce on top. The cannoli are $3.75 each and I think there was a discount if you bought a certain #, I just bought two though. The sandwiches looked fantastic although unfortunately I'm not supposed to have deli meat right now.... I'll be back after August, since I'm due then. :) Overall I'd come back here, service was friendly too.

Yelp
Some friends had recommended this place to us a few weeks ago, so when we were wandering around Birmingham on a pretty spring day, we decided to give it a try. The menu has a variety of sandwiches and salads to choose from. I tried the spicy chicken Caesar and my wife did the same, without the spice. The sandwiches were very good, but they were huge - we probably would have split one if we knew that ahead of time. It was also kind of pricey - not unusual for most places in Birmingham - but $35 for two sandwiches and two waters seemed a little steep. There are a few small tables inside, but you're probably better off taking your food to go.

Yelp
Had an excellent early lunch here today. As we use Yelp all the time to find new places with ratings of places that are more reliable than other sites, this place getting 4 stars and close to us fit the bill. We live in bham yet had no idea this place existed. It's in a nondescript location on Pierce and we went in to a small , bright, clean space. There are a few places to sit and most were taken but we got a nice seat and went to order at the counter. Their menu is not large but has many delicious sounding options. Our order was taken by a very polite and friendly young man. The whole crew behind the counter seemed to be having a good time and promptly made the 2 sandwiches we ordered and a cannoli. We ordered a mortadella sandwich on focaccia and an Italian on an Italian roll. Both breads and sandwiches were excellent. This place is unpretentious and most importantly makes great food with quality ingredients made by a great crew of people. We had a great lunch and look forward to returning soon!!

Yelp
Great new addition for breakfast/lunch options. Cool vibe and attentive service. You order at the counter and there is limited seating. Great tasting big sandwiches. Took half the sandwich home. We ordered the Turkey Bella and the Italiano. Not a fan of the focaccia bread. Wish I knew you can substitute an Italian roll at no extra cost. Both sandwiches were seriously under "sauced". Ask for extra aioli/dressing on the side.

Yelp
Fantastic Italian sandwiches. The foccia bread is a little thick, imo, but everything here is amazing. The sandwiches are large--large enough for people to split or to eat over two meals. Service is quick and friendly too.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing! The sandwiches and soups are absolutely delicious. You can tell they use fresh and clean ingredients. I was thinking about the sandwich for a few days Birmingham needed this! + staff is super friendly and helpful!

Amanda J.

Yelp
Such a cute sandwich shop. Ingredients are fresh and the sandwiches are huge. I love to eat here and leave feeling good that i had a nice healthy lunch. Everyone who works there is so kind and the service is great

Yelp
Thank you very much for a great meal! Been waiting for a sandwich spot downtown where sandwiches were not $20/per, this place fits the bill. 100% would recommend getting the corned beef, pasta salad. Bread is amazing! Definitely check it out.

Mark L.

Yelp
I love a great deli sandwich. Sadly, La Pecora Nera didn't quite deliver. The meats in my italiano were very good quality, the shredded lettuce was fresh, and the dressing was tangy and bright. The problem was that there was so little of it. It was buried in a giant, bland, slightly stale focaccia. Ive had much better in much less upscale zip codes. This place is trying hard to fit into the Birmingham vibe, but they might do much better by making a better sandwich. The service was friendly enough, but the music was definitely off putting. Really loud music that would have been more suited to a Mediterranean style restaurant.

Yelp
Lame Italian sandwich , its a loaf of bread with no dressing and a bit of meat... wont return.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding and the dining room is clean and bright. They just added an adorable little patio. I highly recommend this establishment.

Yelp
Big order, every week, spicy chicken sandwich with dressing on the side , no dressing just bread chicken and lettuce , dry, cannot be eaten, hard to find parking to go again get the dressing

Mary L.

Yelp
Wow so good, I had the turkey Bella, the bread is insane. Really nice staff, beautiful store.

Sean R.

Yelp
A lot of recommendations, so we split an Italian sandwich to try out during lunch. Very busy place. I would say, that after having a Rocco's Italian sandwich in Detroit, La Pecora is not even close to the Quality of Rocco's. LePecora is however a better option than Subway or Jersey Mikes.

Skip W.

Yelp
Sandwich was big for the price, and the pasta salad was out of this world. Very friendly help, and they filled my cannoli to order. Definitely will be coming back.

Gregory S.

Yelp
Sandwiches are fantastic, however you have to ask to have them cut in half, in which they say "no problem" and then don't cut it. So after waiting for it you then have to take it back up to have them cut it. Service and friendliness is mediocre at best, and the place is dirty. Trash can always full, dirty tables and floors, not to mention the music is terrible. Maybe they prefer you take your food to go, because they certainly don't make it comfortable and inviting for you. Sandwiches are good but I would rather drive down to Rocco's before I go back to this place.

Lorenco P.

Yelp
I love this place and the tram is great. if your looking for a quick, affordable, TASTY sandwich this is the spot. I highly recommend the Italiano with a side of coke.
