Detroit’s Best Delis | Eater Detroit

"A scrappy little Italian deli off Washington Boulevard in downtown Detroit, La Pecora Nera is geared towards lunch crowds with made-to-order sub sandwiches, salads, espresso, and gelato. Grab a sandwich on Rising Stars Bakery foccacia; options range from a pistachio mortadella sandwich with pesto and whipped ricotta to a spicy chicken Caesar. Dine in at one of the communal tables or pick up an antipasto salad to-go. In recent years, La Pecora Nera has expanded to new locations in Birmingham and Farmington. Place orders online for pickup." - Danny Palumbo

Google
We finally stopped by La Pecora Nera in downtown Farmington and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Italiano and my husband got the Reuben Angelo. Both sandwiches were absolutely packed—they definitely don't hold back on the meat and cheese! The corn chowder was the perfect creamy compliment to my meal. Pro tip: grab a bag of their salt & vinegar chips and stack them right on your sandwich for an extra crunch. My only tiny personal preference for next time would be adding a mustard dressing to the Italiano to give it that extra zing. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
I really wanted to give this place five stars. The shop itself is clean, the branding is on point, the staff is super friendly, service is fairly quick, and the location is convenient. The sandwich size is generous, and the bread was fresh and tasty. I’m a Reuben person, and I really wanted to love their version. The idea of serving it on focaccia is unique and could have been great, but it fell short for me. The cabbage salad on top was too watery, which made the bread soggy, though not completely inedible. The real letdown was the lack of corned beef 😭 for a Reuben, that’s the star of the show, and it just wasn’t there in a meaningful way. I appreciate the concept and the friendliness of the team, but the execution on the Reuben didn’t hit the mark for me.

Google
Really good and fresh sandwiches. They have an amazing fresh hot gluten free bread, which is a rare find. Piacenza was my personal favorite!

Google
I have literally been wanting to try this place forever and finally had a date lunch with my husband and enjoyed some awesome sandwiches. The service was great, super nice and helpful. I got the Turkey Bella and the only thing I didn’t love, which I didn’t know it was going to be like that, but the sandwich came hot. I don’t care for hot sandwiches and would tell them to make it cold next time. But the flavor, and the bread was all delicous. The aioli was superb and they have Great Lakes Kettle Chips, which are so good! My husband got the Piacenza Italian sandwich and he said it was excellent, a bit spicy, but so good. There isn’t much seating and the chairs are pretty uncomfortable.

Jacob P.

Google
Hands down the best Italian deli and sandwiches in the Detroit area. The gluten free bread was delicious (a bit pricey $5 upcharge) and signature focaccia bread was great as well. We’ve tried 6 sandwiches and all have been great, Reuben Angelo and Piacenzo are our favorites. Awesome location and clean storefront!

Marcus L.

Google
I’ve tried roast beef sandwiches all over the area, and nothing comes close to this place. The bread was fresh, the portions were generous, and the staff treated me like I’d been coming there for years. If you’re a roast beef fan, do yourself a favor and try it here. It’s easily my new favorite deli and absolutely worth the trip.

Google
I was sitting at a nearby brewery when I noticed a familiar pain in my lower torso. I was hungry. So, I asked the staff if they had food. No. But, they had menus from nearby restaurants. The first one I grabbed was for La Pecora Nera. I am so glad I did. I haven't had a great muffuletta since New Orleans, pre-Katrina. Been a minute. Here. I can confidently state: The Muffuletta rocks! The fact that I walked in 5 minutes before closing made no difference to the staff. I was out of there 4 minutes later with a huge, delicious, messy, warm, wonderful muffuletta. Arguably, for me, outside of an authentic Cuban sandwich, there is nothing humankind has made to go between two pieces of bread that is better than an authentic muffuletta. It is a truly magnificent construction and the ones they make here belong in the pantheon of the greats. I am not worthy, but I am exceedingly thankful. It's 45 minutes from home on a good day but, I. Will. Be. Back.

Google
I've been coming to La Pecora Nera for the past couple of years and absolutely love this place. Sandwiches and ingredients are very fresh and high-quality. Espresso and lattes are also phenomenal. Staff is very pleasant and professional, even with the large lunch rush that this place experiences. Food is timely. This is my go-to sub shop and I will be coming here for many years to come!

Yelp
Such a great spot in Farmington Hills!! My boyfriend and I were in town and were looking for something quick like a sandwich spot. The inside is really cute with a lot of seating. The servers were all very friendly. We came on a random weekday around 2pm, and we were served very quickly. He got a meatball sub and I got the prosciutto panino. I thought it was really delicious. The fig jam was a great touch. I didn't try my boyfriend's, but he said that it was really good and that he'd order it again. Definitely recommend this spot and these sandwiches!!
google avatar

Raquel T.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible sandwiches and friendly staff! I ordered 3 sandwiches to go and they were ready in no time. Next time I wouldn't mind having lunch inside, the space is clean and bright! I had the piacenza - capicola, arugula, provolone, giardiniera, house garlic & herb aioli. Absolutely delicious and very spicy!
google avatar

Raagini Y.

Yelp
Don't walk, run!!! Delicious sandwiches on Fresh focaccia, with delicious aioli and lovely basil on top. Omg. You must get the giardiniera on top which gives the perfect amount of zing. I got Italian dressing on the side to try since it's house made and looooved dipping my sandwich into it. While they are expensive, I found one sandwich huge and could only eat half. Great service and lovely ambiance which includes a soft leather couch for comfortable seating. It's a must visit!!
google avatar

Niky K.

Yelp
visited this place a few weeks after they first opened and it just seemed completely subpar I went here thinking they had coffees lattes and sweets as their front window advertised but their coffee machine was just something that you would see in somebody's home. I reluctantly ordered anyway because who doesn't want to support a small business they had a ton of meat sandwiches, which I didn't order because I'm vegetarian they had some sweets and other stuff but just nothing really looked good. The ambience was kind of dry and boring overall I don't know if they were still decorating but this place didn't strike me in any sort of way. The workers seemed busy and the person who took my order did not seem enthusiastic at all. I was more excited than the staff was. It seemed like anyways I might give this place another try, but overall I don't think so. It was not very memorable.

Yelp
Lunch with friends was extra special with a visit to la Pechora nera. I really enjoyed my sandwich with a side of the red cabbage slaw. The menu is great, with fresh ingredients and excellent bread. They had brunch/ breakfast items as well with specials, soups and salads to keep things interesting. I was impressed with their dessert options as well, especially freshly filled cannolis. Yum! Great spot!
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
Excellent sandwich. Key is their freshness, especially their focaccia bread . It is soft to touch but have a chew to it. Tried their special menu today. Chicken culet, herb aioli, roasted red pepper and lots of arugula. Yum.

Rachel A.

Yelp
This cute Italian deli was such a little gem. The sandwiches are what you will be left craving time and time again. So warm and delicious and beyond filling. The staff is always friendly and more than willing to help guide you in the direction of your perfect sandwich...sooo yummy
google avatar

Yelp
I'm shocked we haven't been here until today. The restaurant was very clean and the people working were very nice and helpful. We ordered the Italiano and the Prosciutto panini and both were delicious. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this for a while now!!! Got the prosciutto panino on their foccacia.... I've never had another Sammy like it! The ricotta & fig jam made it so yummy. First time in downtown Farmington as well, such a cute area. Parking was busy for lunch but was able to find a spot eventually. Their house Italian dressing is YUM too!!

Yelp
It was well past lunchtime, so I was starving when I arrived at this relatively newer location in downtown Farmington. Inside several customers were waiting for their orders, while I reviewed the blackboard menu by the register. So many choices: sandwiches, salads, and a few soups. Space was tight, even after I moved to the dining area to wait for my order. I liked the overall restaurant aesthetics: white subway tiles and black wainscoting, leather sofa lounge seating, black aluminum chairs, and industrial tables. The decor was very much in keeping with the "black sheep" theme. I had the Italiano, a crusty roll loaded with a number of deli slices, shredded lettuce, lots of sour pickle slices, and Italian dressing. Delicious. I was intrigued by the Muffaletta. It is something I always order when I see it on menus. Here, it is made with ham, capicola, salami, and cheese on a grilled ciabatta, not a sesame roll. A giardiniera of pickled vegetables balances out the taste profile of the sandwich. The chocolate chunk cookie was okay - a bit dry for my taste. Incidentally, I heard a lot of orders for chicken parm - I'll have to try that the next time I'm here. Service was friendly but much, much slower than expected. And the tables were not cleared/cleaned regularly. Ample parking is available behind the restaurant.

Yelp
I've been craving a meatball sub for over 6 months. Looked at Yelp reviews and decided to go here. First time here. Ordered a meatball sub to go. Asked the chef if there were any options, like toasted bun, he said no. Sub was ready in 5 minutes. Took it home, 2.5 miles, to eat. Very cool, warmed it up in the microwave for 20 seconds, still not warm. Hit it for another 10 seconds and decided it was time to enjoy a meatball sub! The flavor was blah, meatballs were kind of scarce and not very tasty, way too little sauce, way too much doughy bread, not enough cheese. I forced it down but tossed 2/3's of the bread. The following day I ordered a bigger 12" meatball sub from Subway for 30% less cost, that tasted great with all bread consumed! I will not be back.

Yelp
I'm a new lover of Pecora (third visit) and I can attest, I haven't had a bad sandwich yet! The tomato basil soup is yummy and the service is always with a smile. The Piacenza and the Turkey Bella are my favs but underneath it all, I'm really in love with the garlic herb aioli keep 'em coming!
google avatar

Josie V.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are so insanely good. I've tried a few but my favorites are the spicy muffuletta and the corn beef one they have! The breakfast sandwiches are pretty good too if you can get them during their serving hours! The restaurant itself is very clean and tidy and the staff is always nice!

Yelp
Good Shite Maynard. On point. Delish! Best I've had in a long time! Go get you sum bra

Yelp
Stopped by La Pecora Nera for lunch today. We ordered #13 MBLT and #10 Chicken Parmesan subs. They were freshly made and delicious. The staff at LPN is very friendly and efficient. We had our food in no time. Next time, we plan to come early and try out their breakfast menu, which looked interesting.

Yelp
I was excited to try this spot, as I've heard about the one in Detroit. My sister and I ordered separately, she ordered a meatball sub, a corned beef sandwich and the Italiano (I don't have a pic of this, but I thought it was strange for an Italian sandwich to have turkey on it). Anyway, I ordered the #7 Prosciutto w/ricotta, arugula and fig jam, plus some tomato basil soup and a latte while I waited. We came in around 2:30 on a Monday afternoon, there were people sat 1 table and that was it. We ordered and probably waited 15 minutes for our take out orders. It was very clean looking inside, but it was very cold inside, the cashier had a winter coat on. I'll only comment on what I ordered, the tomato basil soup had a really strange look to it. There were little white dots throughout, I think milk/cream maybe curdled when added to tomato base. The flavor was fine, I liked the homemade croutons that it was served with. I was really excited to try the #7, as I had a taste for prosciutto. When I opened the sandwich up, I was disappointed to see that it was made with salami!! There was ricotta, arugula, but I'm not sure if that was fig jam, it almost looks dark like balsamic (but it was sweet). I'm not sure what my sandwich was, it was clearly marked "#7" on the wrapping. The latte was good. I took a some pics of the sandwiches my sister ordered, I think they were all made properly. I'm disappointed, as this was my first time here and my order was made wrong, it wasn't even busy at the time.

Yelp
The number 7 blew me away, Italiano was delicious as well. Bread tasted like it was baked fresh, loved it. The Italiano and number 7 were on two different types of bread, both delicious. Meats were so fresh. Service was quick and friendly,
google avatar

Yelp
I love the Napa club with the warm chicken. It is always so delicious. Portion sizes are big and service is pretty quick.
google avatar

Genevieve D.

Yelp
Great sandwiches! Good portions of meat, fresh and delicious bread. Called in a pick up, easy breezy.

Cal S.

Yelp
The sandwiches are decent enough but not noticably superior to other decent sandwich places. If you need a sandwich, drop in, but don't do out of your way.
google avatar

Cherie T.

Yelp
I usually get the Italian sandwich. I enjoy the food and presentation is good. I been 2 both location, farmington, Birmingham's. Both do well with food, service. Good for a carry- out.

Grant H.

Yelp
Phenomenal sandwiches. Everything Ive tried has been so good. Even something as simple as coleslaw was a delight with how tasty it was. The focaccia bread the sandos are served on is bangin' and is a big boost to the experience. They have a cool selection of bevs and sides and the folks there running it are nice and pleasant. 10/10 would grub again

Yelp
I've just had one of the most filling and satisfying sandwiches that I have had in a while. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich and it delivered loads of flavor. The person who took my order and the cook both helped me decide. I decided to eat in front of the restaurant because it is a nice day. Upon sitting down I realized that I was sitting next to fresh herbs that were planted there by the restaurant! The basil, oregano, rosemary, and mint smelled so good while I decompressed and ate my lunch. The sandwich also had loads of fresh basil in it as well! Total score and I will be back for breakfast.
google avatar

Mary Z.

Yelp
Finally got to try out this little Italian deli. The man who took our order was so friendly, as well as the man who made our sandwiches. We got the #2 turkey bella (Turkey breast, lettuce, tomato, fresh mozzarella, bacon, fresh basil, house garlic & herb aioli) and the #10 chicken parmigiana (italian-style breaded chicken breast, mozzarella, parmesan tomato, fresh basil, house marinara sauce). Both were jam packed with flavor, fresh tasting ingredients, and the bread was so warm and toasty. They do NOT skimp on the meat! These were by far the best sandwiches we have ever had. Can't wait to try their other sandwiches and breakfast menu! I grew up hanging out in downtown Farmington during my middle and high school years in the 2000's and there has been so much change over the years with so many new restaurants/businesses. I am so glad to see la Pecora nera (the black sheep) and Cannelle (both originally from Detroit) come to downtown Farmington. Edit : I later realized that they forgot the tomato in my Turkey Bella.
google avatar

Barrett H.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. I just wish they had longer hours as they are often closed when I'm in downtown Farmington.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Muffuletta sandwich. Mic drop. Best sandwich of any kind that I've had in a while. Perfect ratio of toppings on crispy focaccia.
google avatar

Yas A.

Yelp
The sandwiches here taste great--no doubt about that. Fresh bread, solid toppings, and they clearly know how to build good flavor. But honestly, the portion of protein was disappointing. For the price, I expected more than a few thin slices of meat. It felt more like a snack than a meal. Also, the weekend rush is rough. Long waits, no seats, and it just doesn't seem like they're staffed enough to keep up. If you're going to try it, go on a weekday--you'll probably have a better time. It's a solid spot, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the hype. Ambiance of the place is nice, open space with large windows with a lot of light in. Good vibe for lunch.

Erik A.

Yelp
Here from milwaukee for a soccer tournament. Starving and fell upon this gem. Had the Ruben and daughter had turkey sandwich. 10/10. Focaccia super good. Corned beef awesome. Also had basil tomato soup which was top notch. Everyone super nice and friendly. Packed in a Sat which is to be expected given how good it was. Reasonably priced. Very happy with this find!
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
I came in to splurge on a couple of shareables. I ordered the #6 piacenza and the #9 caprese. Parking was non-fussy, service was friendly, and the shoppe was clean and inviting. The piacenza was OUTSTANDING!...OUTSTANDING, as in the most yummy thing I've eaten in a while. It was a little agrodolce with the giardiniera, and the garlic herb aioli was fantastic with the crusty crunchy exterior of the ciabatta. I highly recommend this handheld! The Caprese was OK, although there was a lot of bread compared to the amount of mozzarella and tomato filling the roll. I'll be back to try more of their menu.

Anthony C.

Yelp
Have been to Pecora Nera a number of times, and never disappointed. Whether a hot meatball or cold Italian sandwich you'll enjoy the friendly staff. Recently tried their chicken Caesar salad and was amazed with the size, freshness and flavor. Well worth your visit, and you can take your food home or sit outside by the fire pits on a sunny day.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the best sandwich I've had in metro Detroit! Great quality and very tasty! Plus the staff is great
google avatar

Cindy A.

Yelp
IF YOU ARE HERE READING THIS. STOP READING MY REVIEW AND JUST GO IN. It's worth it I promise. I can't praise this local business more. Their ciabatta is perfectly dense, chewy and lathered with dreamy pesto with sundried tomatoes, cheese and eggs. The only downside? I dropped my god damn sandwich. I don't think I've ever done that my entire life and here I was unwrapping this breakfast of champions about to dive into great conversation with a friend I haven't seen in forever, I take a bite and dropped the whole thing. The owner saw and provided a remedy right away. I was the first one in the restaurant and I watched him work so hard. I love supporting local businesses that are so tied to their families because it reminds me of my childhood with my own family. These places can't be here without family and I gotta say I would support these hardy sandwiches any day. Dagwood is a close contender since they have a kajillion options, but this is a fantastic lunch stop if you are in the area and want something a little different with that runny egg to complete the sandwich. I also stopped in again. Since they don't offer mimosas I just grabbed a take out (called ahead) and it was ready within 15 minutes. I had hosted brunch at my house and had their calabria hash and strawberry basil italian toast. My only recommendation? Please put ricotta and strawberries on each of the toast dude. We were lucky we were friends that ate together. Or... I would have fought for that one toast that was smuthered with cheese and strawberry ;) When I do another mom date while the kids in preschool... I'm def. doing this again. You must return. You must.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick amazing food made with care and wrapped up in butcher paper. This is a must stop if you are in the quaint downtown area. The turkey was shaved and piled onto a fresh baked bun. The shredded lettuce, fresh tomato and aioli were a top notch choice to go with this menu staple. They have this on the board as #1, and I couldn't agree more. They cherry BBQ chips were a unique choice that I'm not sure I would get again, however something new to try. Sweet, salty, and a tiny bit of heat made them truly original. Enjoy a great sandwich at a cozy little spot. Outside seating out front. Make a date of it and chow down.
google avatar

Chloe K.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place!!! Have been back multiple times and it's part of my rotation of regular places. The staff is always so nice and helpful as well as the food tasting fresh. There's a small parking lot in the back which is convenient in downtown areas, I parked and walked in from the back door. Highly recommend :)
google avatar

Monica W.

Yelp
Clean, quaint, friendly. Came on a rainy Tuesday. It's definitely quaint but modern farmhouse vibes. Not a lot of seating but it was enough for the lunch and work crowd with those ordering to go. I got the #7 proscuitto panino: it was delicious yet rich. I really look forward to having breakfast.
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
Finally got a chance to hop in and try the new sandwich shop in town. The new location is right on Farmington Road in the center of town. Adorable cozy location with some indoor seating and in the summer it has some spots to sit outside. We were greeted right away and the staff was great at answering our questions and also making suggestions. I ordered the #7 (I picked off the arugula- yes, I'm one of THOSE people- ) and my husband had the #10 chicken parm sandwich. All the sandwiches are handmade and everything was very fresh. The ciabatta bread on mine was lightly grilled and crispy and was a great compliment to the thinly sliced prosciutto and ricotta spread on the bottom. Mine was double the size of the pic, but I was starving and wolfed down half before the "money shot". My husband said the chicken parm was crisp and sauce was tasty. We both thought portions were great. I thought mine was huge and definitely could have split it. Can't wait to go back and try more. This Italian girl was very thrilled for the selections. Glad to have you in town.
google avatar

Yelp
These sandwiches are otherworldly. I was blown away by the level of quality not only if the food but of the people working here. It's a perfect Italian sandwich shop. I've had several of their sandwiches now and every single one has left me wanting more. Kick ass sandwiches!
google avatar

GG M.

Yelp
La Pecora Nera in downtown Farmington is top tier! Their #12 sandwich is truly one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The fantastic food is complemented by the incredibly friendly staff, and the super clean, aesthetically pleasing interior. A five-star experience all around!

Yelp
Welcome to the neighborhood. Family owned Italian sandwich shop with great selection for every taste bud and yes they have Gelato and you can add topping to it from strawberry to Nutella. Super fast friendly service and nice ambiance with wonderful Italian music playing in the backdrop. Trey also have breakfast menu that looked delicious we went with lunch # 13 and # 15 and tomato soup. They were busy so allow about 20 min wait. They have two tables outside and 6 tables inside.Cant wait to come back and try the whole menu. Highly recommend what a great place!!
google avatar

Don R.

Yelp
With all the great reviews i was really expecting a great experience. Going with my favorite a Italian sub, or what they call Italiano. For $14 i was expecting it to be really packed with meats and cheeses. Sandwich was nice looking but once you split it open i started to feel let down. Well maybe its tasty at least? I probably should of dissected it to see what was on it. Not Really much flavor. I didnt taste much more than the ham and turkey and lettuce and provolone. No tomatoes. Very little onion. I didnt taste any dressing. I was hoping to like this place and come back to try the muffuletta. Just as well i see they by the menu it isnt a true muffaletta .Who ever heard of one without olive salad on it? I dont know if i caught them at a bad time or what? Just know ill try somewhere else next time.

C.J R.

Yelp
Sandwiches are too small for the price. I could go to New Jersey and get a better Sandwich 3 times the size, for less than $20. You're better off going to Jersey mikes. The tomato basil soup was good, not great, but good. Pasta salad, eh, red cabbage coleslaw needs some acidity. So called Italian sandwich only tasted good with the giardiniera. I got this mozzarella caprese thing, add some pesto it would taste way better, and make the mozzarella pieces bigger/put more.
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
The turkey bella with arugula is my absolute favorite! I get it at least once a week. My husband likes the Italiano. I also love the chicken Caesar with arugula added. 1 salad = 3 servings for me. The flavors of each of these are out of this world!
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
This is the perfect addition for downtown Farmington. Everything was delicious, staff was friendly and a nice stead flow of patrons. I had the #3 The Italiano along with a bowl of Minestrone. It was by far the best deli sandwich I have had in a long time. I did substitute the Italian dressing for fig jam and that was a really good move The soup was full of flavor. Clean simple decor. Highly recommend and we'll worth the price. Stop in and help keep them around for many years
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Tried this new place for lunch. (New to us, no idea how long it's been around.) Very happy. High quality and great flavors. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp
Yes! Black sheep unite! Come and get a really nice sandwich in a relaxed easygoing atmosphere. Everyone is great and helpful and the menu has something for everyone. Going back soon!
google avatar

Chelsea P.

Yelp
I am a sucker for a good Italian sub, and this one definitely made my favorites list! It's meat packed and the veggies are all fresh. I am a sauce girl, so next time I will ask for more Italian because it was delicious! Definitely recommend and I will return!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
This review is strictly for the food as my bf picked up the order and I didn't interact with anyone. I got the Italiano and it was honestly one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. It's a simple sandwich but it is done very well. Plus they give you a ton of food for your money. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Barbara O.

Yelp
OK, we were in town last week visiting family and ate here and I have to tell you the sandwiches are so good and fresh. The meat is very good. All of our sandwiches were excellent. We had five sandwiches. They were all so good if I lived in Farmington or in the near area I would be here at least once a week if not more that's how good they are so try them out. We're from Las Vegas and we have some good subs shops out here, but this one is really very good.

kevin k.

Yelp
We got chicken parmesan and prosciutto panino both with red cabbage slaw and cannoli all we solid we will be back. If in the area give it a try.
