The 26 Best Restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico | Eater

"This industry hangout came back from the pandemic with a natural wine selection and revamped (but still exceptional) cocktail lineup. The new drink menu features a martini infused with sesame, a daiquiri made with the local agricola rum Ron Pepón, and a spicy hibiscus margarita. Thankfully, the food menu is just as well executed, with bar food you’d expect like wings and burgers, plus veggie lo mein, smoked gouda croquettes, and a barbecue portobello sandwich." - Paulina Salach Antonetti

15 Best Bars in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"La Penúltima perfectly balances hip, industrial-chic vibes with a cozy neighborhood atmosphere. It's one of those rare bars that feels artsy and cool without being the slightest bit pretentious. Cocktails are simple and well-crafted—no foams or unnecessary flourishes here. We like the daiquiri and the Isla Borinquen Fizz, a creamy and effervescent blend of rum, gin, coconut, pineapple, and soda. There are also a handful of good local beers. All of it brings locals out in droves." - Kris Fordham

Google
I asked for a Puerto Rican classic, Nabil hooked me up with a Rum old fashioned. Can't recommend enough. Disco fries on top, perfection. Great bar to come if you're looking for a taste of nightlife, excellent food, and high quality drinks.

We stopped by Penúltima around 5pm on a Thursday and the place itself was cool. The layout is great, very open and unpretentious, and the extensive menu with a solid spirit selection definitely stood out. The open kitchen concept is a nice touch too. We kept it simple with a couple Medalla beers, one cocktail, and a crème brûlée. The beer was canned (expected at $2.50). The cocktail was a mezcal Paloma riff. It wasn’t bad, but I would have elevated it with some carbonation and a better presentation like a long cube or pebbled ice with a dried citrus garnish. The star of the night was the crème brûlée. It was delicious: light, airy, creamy, rich, and decadent. Where things went wrong was the service. The bartender didn’t make us feel welcome at all. He seemed annoyed, ignored us when we tried to order more (which is just lost money for the bar), and it took forever to get the check. You can have great food and drinks, but if the hospitality isn’t there, people won’t want to come back. Overall, Penúltima has potential. I’d return to try the smash burger (which looked popular) and maybe more cocktails, but hopefully next time with better trained staff who understand service makes the experience.

Google
Stumbled upon this cool corner bar while waiting for a nearby dinner reservation, and it turned out to be a gem. The cocktails were outstanding, and the food smelled incredible; definitely coming back to try it. The bartender kept things moving smoothly, even during the rush. While indoor space is limited, there’s a spacious outdoor patio out back that adds to the vibe.

Google
Nice chill party vibe. The crowd was friendly. Drinks were great. The buffalo wings and fries were tasty. I had the Isla barquean fizz - I enjoyed it.

Theodore B.

Google
Great bar with really nice food and a wide selection of local beverages. There’s an indoor space with a bar and kitchen. The music in there can be a bit loud, but outside they have plenty of seating and still a nice atmosphere. Between the two, you’ll find something you like. I preferred to sit outside to enjoy my wings and disco fries.

Google
Probably the best cocktails in San Juan. Alternative and unconventional place, they also serve savory dishes, with vegan alternatives. They have a backyard were you can sit and dine. Perfect for after hours or a pre game cocktail. The Smashed Burger is AMAZING!

Jessenia R.

Google
The bar has amazing wines but the staff is so rude. They act like they are doing you a favor and they will literally ignore or cut you off. I went twice because the wine selection is pretty good but both times I got the worst service. They also tried to have me pay double the price I paid the day before for the same bottle of wine. I told them how is it double a day later and then they said it was a discount they gave the day before. Do not recommend at all!

Brian M.

Google
The best bar in all of San Juan! Impeccable friendly service, tastefully curated wines (THEY HAVE ORANGE WINE, multiple good ones!) a backyard, and delicious food. We ordered three rounds of the shishito peppers. The wings and disco fries were perfect too. Still thinking about the ever so slightly savory sesame martini as well. Overall an excellent bar for lovers of natural wines, elevated pub food, and good bohemian vibes.

Yelp
I recently spent about two weeks in Puerto Rico (half my time in San Juan and half on the west coast) and this was definitely my favorite spot throughout my entire trip! I regret to admit that I only had one drink here, so my experience was short (we were bar hopping after dinner), but it was extremely memorable. Upon arrival, we were able to immediately grab two seats at the bar (even on a busy Friday night) and were greeted by several people behind the bar. I grew up in Miami (going to bars in Wynwood throughout my early 20s) and now live in Brooklyn, and, based only on appearances, this place easily could've fit in in either place. At La Penultima though, I never felt like maybe I just wasn't cool enough. There were so many different kinds of people having fun here - people who just got off work (including some older people), a small birthday celebration, people simply having dinner, and, of course, a few tourists, like me. This is perhaps the least pretentious "cool" bar I've ever been to - and I loved it for that. The cocktail I ordered was Feel the Beet. I love trying the more unique drinks on any menu, so beet in a drink always calls to me. This was...wow. Seriously, wow. It's been weeks and I still think about this one! So refreshing and tasty, let alone the color of the drink. I unfortunately didn't take a picture, but it was a beauty. I also did not get anything to eat, again, regrettably. We had just eaten, but the food here looked incredible. The smells were enough to almost convince me I was hungry not even twenty minutes after a full dinner elsewhere. Like I said, I spent quite some time in PR and visited nearly every popular (and not so popular) cocktail bar - if you're visiting and can only visit one, make it La Penultima.

Yelp
Very cool bar with a good vibe, knowledgeable and skilled bartenders and good music. I had a daiquiri and it was really good. The other cocktails looked good as well.

Yelp
Food was good, typical American bar food. Wings were crispy and flavorful; the burger was juicy. I also liked the buffalo chicken sandwich a lot as well, loved the coleslaw. Sit in the back patio outdoors, it's more open and chill. Didn't have any of the drinks but I thought that this place was a cool local spot.

Yelp
So glad we stumbled on this hidden bar while in Santurce. It has a Brooklyn-ish feel to it and the vibe was great. The bar tenders were really nice and fun. Nabil was great and helpful in accommodating my egg free needs! We ordered the cauliflower app and the croquettes and both were delicious!

Yelp
This is such a cool spot in San Juan to grab a drink and really great bar food. There's a great vibe to this place - but it gets packed even early in the night so keep that in mind. Service here was nothing special but that's as to be expected as the bar was several people deep.

Yelp
What a great bar! We sat on the patio on a hot, dry night. People shared tables. Someone was playing guitar. Our waitress found tea for our resident teetotaler. And the cocktails? My goodness! The Feel the Beef felt like drinking alcoholic vampire blood, and the Pina coladas were best in class. We had a blast!

Yelp
This is my favorite bar. Great drinks, wine and the best burgers in town. Order a Hopscotch, try a bottle of natural wine with shishito peppers and definitely the burger. You'll not regret it. The patio is always busy but is without a doubt the best place to hang out with friends. Great service and cool layback vibes round up the experience at La Penu. I know you'll be back. See you at the bar.

Yelp
Title: Disappointing Experience at La Penúltima Bar During my recent visit to La Penúltima Bar, I encountered an issue with a cocktail I ordered. Unfortunately, the drink did not meet my expectations in terms of taste, and upon trying it, I found it to be unpleasant. I politely requested if it could be replaced, explaining that the cocktail was not to my liking. However, the response from the server that her name is Lluvia was unexpected. She informed me that a replacement or refund was not possible and insisted that I would still need to pay for the drink. Further, when I sought to discuss my concerns with a manager, hoping for a more understanding approach, my request was denied. This lack of flexibility and refusal to address a customer's dissatisfaction was disappointing. An essential aspect of hospitality is ensuring that patrons feel heard and valued, especially when expressing concerns about their experience. The situation escalated when I expressed my intention to report this incident due to the server's rudeness. In response, she demanded that I leave the establishment immediately and vocally expressed that she hoped I would never return. This level of hostility towards a customer expressing a concern is disheartening and not indicative of the standard of hospitality expected in such establishments. I believe feedback is crucial for improvement and hope that La Penúltima Bar will consider a more accommodating approach to customer service in the future. It's important for a business to understand that customer satisfaction plays a significant role in its success and reputation. Lluvia I think that you need to learns some manners and good service and also how to come with solutions with this kind of complaints.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite with friends on a Monday afternoon. On Mondays in PR, so many businesses are closed, so it was great that LA Penultima was open. I tried the ceviche bao, which was EXCELLENT. If dinner weren't so close to this snack, I would've gotten more to eat. The exterior doesn't match the interior at all. I was expecting something totally different. Cute little spot. Downside: they are SO SLOW to do EVERYTHING. Don't be in a rush and come here!

Chris P.

Yelp
Weird hipster type place Younger crowd (20's). Drinks were solid. Not my typical vibe personally but I was oldest person there so take that for what it's worth.

Yelp
Really chill vibes, amazing and inventive cocktails, and gorgeous bartenders. The mural outside is really cool, too.

Yelp
Went there 15 minutes ago had a pleasant conversation with the bouncer. Went inside. Stood there like a moron for 15 minutes. No one gave me service.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and the Michelada is amazing! My husband had the Cubano sandwich and it was the real deal. The pickles must be homemade because they are lightly pickled and sets the sandwich off. I had the chicken sandwich with buffalo sauce and blue cheese. It was goooooood! French fries are fresh... and the michelada mix is made in house too. Service was phenomenal. I highly recommend this bar and grill! Sorry I don't have a pic of the food, it was that good and we were that hungry!

Yelp
Three words: Isla Borinquen Fizz. If you come here and neglect to order this drink then there is something genuinely wrong with you- I'm not sure what. I've come here and ordered this drink each time I've visited San Juan, and while I'm away, think about this drink on a regular basis. It is so smooth and creamy and fizzy and delicious. I haven't had anything like it anywhere else. When I came back after having not been here in a year I was worried the menu would have changed and it would be gone. Thankfully, nothing had changed and it was still there. The service is friendly and quick, the ambiance is really nice; they offer both indoor and outdoor seating. I haven't tried any of their food options but they seem good and like there might be 1 or 2 veg friendly items on the menu. This place is the best.

Yelp
Of course we found a Chicago bar while on vacation in San Juan! :) We stopped here on a break after walking around Santurce and I am so glad we found it! While we didn't try the food the cocktails were delicious, we also really enjoyed chatting with the bartender and the owner! great people!

Yelp
Top notch bartenders. This is the place to go for cocktails. The menu is only the beginning of the selection.

Yelp
When I first arrived here, I thought I had the wrong place. The reviews were great but no one was there. Apparently, things start to pick up later in the evening as the locals told me this is considered an after hours spot. I arrived there around 7:30 pm on a Friday night in search of food and drink. I was not disappointed when I finally received my meal. The burger was delicious and the drinks were mixed so well that would say they are the best that I've ever had. I forget the name of the mustard sauce mixed with mayonnaise and garlic, but I suggest you try it with the fries. Things started to pick up around 9pm but the locals told me that as the night goes on it gets more and more crowded.

Yelp
A hipster hangout with great cocktails made by a talented staff. Service was quick on the Thursday we visited and the place was pretty busy. The outdoor patio's centerpiece is an old truck where the bed is used for extra seating. Our server recommended we come here, and we're grateful he did. The place is very young and accepting-- we appreciate y'all flying a rainbow flag above the bar!

Patrick R.

Yelp
Holy shit can they make drinks. Plus, astonishing beer list (Collective Arts!) Bury me here.
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Santuce. The cocktails are reasonably priced $8-12 and deliciously made. I suggest the Borinquen Fizz and the paper plane (if you like bitters). They also typically have the best craft beer rotation in the area. We've also had their buns, lo mien, and wings. Bonus that they separate the sauce from the wings if you order to go so it doesn't get soggy! There's an outdoor area where smokers typically hang out, but plenty of room at the bar or standing tables to enjoy a well crafted cocktail or good craft beer.

Yelp
I had just happened to find this lovely bar when I was in PR for two months because of the hurricane. The three (or four) times I had a bit of time off supporting the relief effort, I came here and enjoyed the regularly priced drinks, and the chill atmosphere. This bar plays some really chill ass music (they play everything from your generic bachata to music from the likes of Kaytranada), and it has a artsy, slightly vintage vibe you would only see at a dive in Manhattan... in fact this place looks better than MANY spots i've been to here at home. The owner is from the mainland U.S. (yes I know what you're going to say, but he isn't your typical gentrifier, he respects the culture and learned the language) and he built a original, yet un-overbearing spot for local, tourists, and servicemembers taking a break from helping the island alike. P.S. The owner couldn't make a Pina Colada while I was there ( island has fruit shortages at the time for obvious reasons), but he promised one the next time I happen to be in PR (hopefully to vacation).

Kat G.

Yelp
Wonderful hospitality. Great burger. Amazing could cocktails. I appreciate Christian's recommendation to go here so much was definitely different then any where else I visited and en la placita. Loved it and hearing Stephens story and what him back to PR inspires me. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Bartenders craft delicious cocktails here. My faves are the Cafe Carre, and Old Sports. Small menu for food, I like the Pork Belly Bao Buns! Good music inside, they have a back area with park tables which are better for chatting with friends. The owners let me host a friend's birthday party here in the back, and it was a great venue! All the staff were kind and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is amazing, great food, cocktails, and service. The selection of interesting spirits and cocktails made me want to sit and try everything at this amazing venue, the militaristic set up shows that it was definitely built by an industry veteran who understands that optimization trumps ascetics any day of the week. I highly recommend Penultima!
google avatar

Ben D.

Yelp
Some of the best cocktails I've had anywhere. They come slow, but are passionately crafted and all are well balanced. The disco fries kick ass as well

Francisco C.

Yelp
Great food, great drinks, (5/5) awful service in night time. In this sense, rude and slow service summarizes the same. This is very unfortunate given that the food are drinks are the post in la placita area. The bad service is due to a bartender named Carlos. A total jerk. The other staff are quite "nice"
google avatar

Kotomi C.

Yelp
Our waiter Pedro from Santaella suggested this place. Good vibes and drinks. $5 beer and shot

Lizzy O.

Yelp
Fun place with an outdoor patio. I got the Isla Boriquen Fizz and I honestly think it was one of the best drinks I've ever had. I basically chugged it and immediately got up to get another.
google avatar

Alev K.

Yelp
Amazing spot. It is a fairly new bar with Great vibes. A must visit bar in San Juan for outdoors, good beer selection and burger. We stopped by here in hopes to find a local bar outside old San Juan. Really loved the people and atmosphere.
google avatar

Brittany C.

Yelp
The best Bartenders. Great food. Beautiful space. They really care about what they are producing. They want to give you the best version of whatever they are putting forward. I would fly back to San Juan just to go to this bar.

A O.

Yelp
I used to come here about a year ago and enjoy the food and some drinks (Moscow Mule rocks!) but now they have working there some bartenders that are so unprofessional that just got me to leave. I'm a computer engineer and was looking for a place to have a meeting so I was in the area and remembered how cool this place was and how chill the owner was. All I needed was a table, electricity and food and drinks because I have my own hotspot. So I enter there and music was super loud, bartender was dismissive even when explaining and I just left. Easiest $100 the place could make with a guy buried in a computer but too bad their bartender are sooooo cool. Never again.

Mark S.

Yelp
Hands down the best cocktail bar in San Juan. Creative, well grounded in the classics, amazing space. Terrific food as well!
google avatar

Carlos F.

Yelp
An unpretentious yet cool place where you can sip a beer or have a cocktail and actually sit down and eat! A hop skip and jump away from La Placita so you can start your bar hopping here. Fast becoming one of my faves in San Juan.
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
Best unique cocktails you will find in Puerto Rico without question. Don't get the same mojito over and over, come here and get the banana daiquiri -- the bartenders are as good as any in the US big cities.

Mari M.

Yelp
Have come to this place several times. Great cocktail selection, friendly attentive staff. My appetizer was ok. Drinks are made with care and the bartender seemed to enjoy explaining the differences between the drinks and giving reccomendations. Quality service makes this a great place.
