I recently spent about two weeks in Puerto Rico (half my time in San Juan and half on the west coast) and this was definitely my favorite spot throughout my entire trip!
I regret to admit that I only had one drink here, so my experience was short (we were bar hopping after dinner), but it was extremely memorable. Upon arrival, we were able to immediately grab two seats at the bar (even on a busy Friday night) and were greeted by several people behind the bar. I grew up in Miami (going to bars in Wynwood throughout my early 20s) and now live in Brooklyn, and, based only on appearances, this place easily could've fit in in either place. At La Penultima though, I never felt like maybe I just wasn't cool enough. There were so many different kinds of people having fun here - people who just got off work (including some older people), a small birthday celebration, people simply having dinner, and, of course, a few tourists, like me. This is perhaps the least pretentious "cool" bar I've ever been to - and I loved it for that.
The cocktail I ordered was Feel the Beet. I love trying the more unique drinks on any menu, so beet in a drink always calls to me. This was...wow. Seriously, wow. It's been weeks and I still think about this one! So refreshing and tasty, let alone the color of the drink. I unfortunately didn't take a picture, but it was a beauty.
I also did not get anything to eat, again, regrettably. We had just eaten, but the food here looked incredible. The smells were enough to almost convince me I was hungry not even twenty minutes after a full dinner elsewhere.
Like I said, I spent quite some time in PR and visited nearly every popular (and not so popular) cocktail bar - if you're visiting and can only visit one, make it La Penultima.
