I first visited La Picanteria with a large group of friends for a night of painting, tasting, and sipping. We had the entire bar-side of the restaurant to ourselves and the food and drinks were so incredible I promised to return soon with my hubby.
Then covid hit.
So, finally, after 9 months, we did it and it was everything I remember. We made a reservation in advance and arrived to the center, the steps to which are now barricaded off completely except for one entrance and one exit. At the top of the steps, our temperature was taken and we were permitted to enter. Once downstairs, I was amazed at how completely transformed the space is now. Rather than a lot of wasted outdoor space, there are tables lining every corner, edge, and walkway. Each table is labeled for the specific restaurant (about 4-5). When we found the hostess stand for LP, we again had our temperature taken and were ushered to our table in the far back corner, which was nice and quiet. They brought us pillows to make the stone bench slightly more comfortable, and we scanned the center sign to bring up the menu.
We perused the menu and could not decide exactly which dish we wanted because EVERYTHING looked so good. We started with a round of large (giant) Pisco sours and asked our server if the chef happened to have a tasting menu. He left to go ask and returned with a smile, at least I assume he was smiling because he was wearing a mask of course. He began by asking us what kind of ceviche we wanted and we agreed on the mixed seafood with spice. Next, he brought us one of my favorite Peruvian dishes, a causa with giant prawns. Finally, we had a delicious dish that had a sort of Indian or mediterranean feel to it complete with steak, breaded and fried mini potatoes, and a vegetable fritter. It was too much for me to finish, so I ended up taking most of the last dish home, but I was not too full to turn down dessert (never).
The dessert was really special--I thought we were getting just a simple brownie, but it came with not one but two sides of ice cream (a second was in a martini glass), as well as blueberries. Rather than coffee, we also ordered mixed drinks of a Moscow Mule and a margarita, neither of which was nearly as delicious or authentic as the Pisco sours, but that is to be expected.
If you have not tried LP, I highly recommend it. It's an excellent date spot and you will not be disappointed with the romantic ambiance and top-notch service.
