The Wharf is Expanding to Fort Lauderdale | Eater Miami

"José Mendín is returning to Puerto Rican roots with La Placita in MiMo, taking over the former Balans space with partner Julián Gil and the Balans owners to serve straightforward Puerto Rican fare (explicitly no fusion) plus drinks from Cocktail Cartel Co., with plans to open by December." - Olee Fowler

This place is very clean, nice atmosphere with music, fresh flowers on the tables. The waitress is very attentive and took care of us, always had our coffee topped off throughout our meal. The food is good. The average plate price appears to be $10 but they have a great taco specials and affordable side items available . I was happy to find several kid plate options that are perfect options for little ones. I wish I had taken pictures before finishing our meal but we will most likely be coming back.

This place is a hidden gem! Great tasting food and amazing staff! The prices are within reach and you get a lot of food! The tripas are AMAZING. I got them in a plate AND in the mini tacos

The inside of the restaurant looks so pretty when you walk in. My partner and I ordered the Torta Cubana and Torta La Placita with beef fajita. The tortas were huge, packed with meat and veggies, and the bread was perfectly toasted on the outside. 10/10 recommend getting either, but I would definitely come back for the Torta La Placita and their green salsa. The servers were kind, checked on us, and made sure we had what we needed.

Google
I have been searching for a place that resembles the food back home and I’ve found it! This little gem on the east side has some of the best food I’ve had in Austin. The bistek a la Mexicana is spicy and very flavorful. The cheese enchilada gravy is made from scratch and very delicious. They also have a great salsa selection. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Great food, great price, and right by the soccer fields so convenient after leaving a game. I ordered with a group of 4 and amongst us we had a tostada, caldo soup, beef quesadillas, chicken enchiladas, cheese enchiladas, 2 cokes, and 2 michelada's. Everything was superb and came out to around $70, which honestly isn't bad for 4 people with alcohol. Service was wonderful. They were attentive, quickly refilled our drinks/chips, and had our food out to us in less than 15 minutes. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Excellent service and I cannot say enough about the food. The drinks are well made and worth the money. The plates that we order were the ones for 2 people. There are 2 choices so we got one of each, from the beef too the shrimp everything was perfect.

Yelp
It's the weekend, so time to try new tacos. Headed sorry again to La Placita. I was going to do two different tacos, but they do three breakfast tacos for $4.50, if they are all the same, so chorizo she egg on flour again for me! Fillings was good. Eggs weren't as fluffy as I'd ideally like, but not bad at all. Flour tortillas are a bit too thick, but Austin, not bad. Warmed up, but probably could be crisped up just a slight bit more. Seems like a solid place. Will try again. Three to four stars.

Yelp
I don't know about the food yet, but this place just left a bad taste in my mouth with the way they do business. Ordered a Gordita plate which costs 14.99. They charged me $18.00, which was weird and asked why the tax was so high. Was then told that they charge extra $1 for beef and the tax came out to $18, which was incorrect. I showed them that it should only come out to $17.31 and then was told that they charge extra for credit cards. There was no sign anywhere that says that. Asked to speak to manager/owner and was told they are not available I wouldn't mind paying the extra but I do not like being taken advantage of. Did not tell me beforehand and only tried to explain away the extra charges after I questioned the amount charged. Will never go back.

Yelp
Finally a restaurant in the neighborhood. (have been here for years, but they re-modeled ) Nice and clean environment. Customer service excellent hit at right time food prepared right away. Got Two egg cheese and ham burritos,2 Migas tacos they were crisp tasting good flavor. Nice to have it a real restaurant in the neighborhood. 78744 baby. Southeast Austin to heart and blood keeps the city going . Working hard nice when people get it, right!

Yelp
The service is fast. The food is ok. Prices are good. Im not a fan of the tortillas but the breakfast is good and they are open early.

Yelp
Just went for a meal after my boyfriend's basketball game in the area and it was phenomenal! Service was fast and friendly - plus the quesadillas were the best we've had! I had a shrimp one and my boyfriend had the chicken fajitas. Their salsas are also very complex and delicious! Hope to be back

Yelp
Once upon a taco-less morning, I sauntered into this joint, tantalized by the promise of breakfast tacos that could sweep me off my feet. Visions of crispy bacon, fluffy eggs, and gooey cheese danced in my head as I eagerly placed my order: potato and egg with beans, cheese, and a slice of bacon in each tortilla. The anticipation was akin to meeting a blind date for the first time - would we hit it off or end up in a heated debate over who makes the best tacos? Unfortunately, it was the latter. With one bite, I was transported to aisle 7 at the grocery store, wrestling with clingy plastic wrap on a pack of discount, non-refrigerated tortillas. Surely, this couldn't be the grand taco affair I was promised! As a proud native of the 956, Rio Grande Valley (where we take our tacos as seriously as our quinceañeras), I can attest to the authentic taste that should be present in a true breakfast taco. If that elusive 10 out of 10 taco is a precious gem, these tacos were a 2. The vibe of the place and the pictures on the window lured me in, only to leave me with an unfulfilled taco craving and disappointment so heavy, it could sink the Titanic. To sum it up, my breakfast taco journey at this establishment left me feeling like a lovesick fool who was catfished by a breakfast taco. If you're after that true, authentic taste, it's best to keep on looking - or simply hop on a plane to the 956. As for the service, it was alright, but it's a pain to call a place to place an order and have it give you the busy signal. If you can afford to remodel your restaurant, then surely you can afford to make it so that your customers can be placed on hold while they wait for the cashier to finish the other call.

Yelp
So it's not in the most upscale part of Austin. So what! If you want some excellent Tex-Mex breakfast, this is the place for you. Located in a tiny strip center in south Austin, this little eatery is a gem and serves some mean breakfast tacos. I mean almost San Antonio good. Delicious and rich flavors. We had 2 types of tacos: Chorizo with potatoes and beans Papas a la Mexicana with beans. Both were excellent

Yelp
Wonderfully clean hole in the wall. Impeccable creamy green salsa. In fact, they bring three different kinds of salsas to the table which is lovely. Server spoke both Spanish and English and was super kind. I'm also celiac and wasn't cross contaminated

Veronica G.

Yelp
The food itself was pretty alright but the service wasn't there for me. I am someone who didn't grow up learning Spanish and I feel like the ladies there were rude to me because I wasn't speaking to them back in Spanish. Then when I paid I was definitely overcharged.. I would never again.
google avatar

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
Called to make a takeout order (they answered in Spanish and I spoke English). I asked if they could make a shrimp burrito and she said no and listed out options in Spanish. I said ok, I'd pay for the up charge and she hung up on me. I'm working 12-14 hour days which is why I'm ordering out on a business trip. This business lost a good tipper and reviewer.

Shaelee F.

Yelp
Phenomenal place!! This is probably the best enchiladas I have ever had! We had a group of 5 and everyone loved their food. The service was great as well! Will definitely be back!! highly recommend

Yelp
I will never go back there. Ate there for over 30 years but the bar tender got hostile. Food used to be excellent but has gone downhill also. This place is no longer an option for me, off my list. Find somewhere else to eat and whatever you do avoid the small bar.

Jane M.

Yelp
My manager and I are in Austin for a business meeting, and we ordered tacos from La Placita for a breakfast meet-and-greet. We were served promptly, the food was excellent, and our visitors enjoyed the tacos as much as we did. We made sure to bring La Placita's menus and business cards with us so our co-workers who live in the area could drop by!
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
Great little place, good staples, great prices. The tortas are my favorites.

Dean S.

Yelp
I decided to give this little place a try. I ordered Steak Poblano, one of the best Mexican plates I've ever had and the portions we're huge. Excellent service as well, with a smile.
google avatar

Incze C.

Yelp
Found this little Mexican restaurant- with delicious food! Breakfast tacos are great. Hubby got chicharrón, eggs over easy, beans and potatoes ...
google avatar

Cassandria A.

Yelp
Soooooo good! Had me a quick breakfast taco here and let me tell you this is what a Mexican breakfast taste like down the taste of the grease. 10/10 will be coming here again
google avatar

Kirsten B.

Yelp
Excellent community diner with quick and friendly service. I work nearby and go often for breakfast or lunch, their seafood is particularly good.
google avatar

Joshua O.

Yelp
It's cheap, it's quick, it's greasy and it's good. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here buy if I'm in the area and want something quick I will stop by. I came here with my cousin we were driving by hungry and saw the sign . The full parking lot was reassuring in deciding to eat here . I ordered a fried shrimp plate which was a lot of 10 pieces my cousin ordered the vegetarian torta (it needed salt). The shrimp and torta took about 12 - 15 minutes to come out which was not bad . Considering they seemed to be having a rush. The torta like I said needed flavor and salt. The shrimp were very greasy and probably really bad for me but not bad. I would stop by if I'm hungry and in the area. They are very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Zach G.

Yelp
Have eaten everything on the menu - best Mexican food in S AUSTIN and great prices - highly recommend the tortas (beef fajita) and the Fajita Texanas for 2!!!
google avatar

Hank H.

Yelp
Came out of Yelp retirement to say how awesome this place is. Had a huge, filling breakfast including coffee with my husband for around $15. The staff was friendly and attentive. We're from out of town and were warned to stay away from this neighborhood but I'm so glad we didn't take that advice. Definitely worth a visit for the beans alone.
google avatar

Mindy G.

Yelp
This is a very good hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. Not too crowded, delicious food but some items are a little pricey. They have very good Gorditas, menudo, corn tortillas from scratch. But they do not have the best service and I received my bean and cheese taco cold due to the cheese. If they would throw it back on the stove top for just a few seconds to heat up the cheese before it is served, it would be so much better!!
google avatar

Orlando R.

Yelp
This place is the BOMB! The tacos and burritos are the best! The menu has a wide variety!

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Horrible service. My husband and I got to the restaurant at 8:55 PM which online it says they close at 10 PM. Denies us to eat inside, mind you I have a baby. We ended up leaving. I never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. It was embarrassing. Don't believe the reviews. There's a bunch a flies and dead flies inside as well. Doesn't look very clean.
google avatar

Steph B.

Yelp
Soooo good! Came here for lunch and got quick service and the food was delightful! Not to mention is was less then $20 for two meals and two drinks.
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
Delicious every time, without fail. My family & I come here often. It's not fancy by any stretch but boy you will get some yummy~ness & for not for a lot of money! Staff is always friendly. Food comes out quick. No complaints!
google avatar

Carolyn C.

Yelp
We stopped here while camping at McKinney falls. The food was very good and the service was pleasant and attentive . The red salsa and green sauce were both great. Prices were reasonable. Definitely recommend.

Kevin S.

Yelp
Love this place! Our favorite Mexican food in south Austin...super-tasty, generous portions, and affordable. I'm especially a fan of the Bisteck Ranchero, but everything we've tried has been great!

Christiana A.

Yelp
I adore this place! Authentic and quality, one of my go to's for Mexican food in my area!
google avatar

Yelp
Best migas in Austin, awesome breakfast tacos and everything I've tried on the dinner menu has been excellent. Highly recommended gem in southeast Austin!
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I just moved to the neighborhood and are still figuring out the cool nearby secrets. This place is definitely one of them. I'm from San Antonio and this place taste just like home. The staff was super friendly too. It might not look like much on the outside but if you're looking for the good stuff go here.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Best menudo in town. My husbands every Sunday brunch meal. Great food. Great service.

Yelp
This place is so disgusting, the food was horrible-found a hair in my taco..The cashier was mean and extremely unprofessional. I will never dine here again!

Yelp
The best tortilla soup I've ever had! Super sweet servers. Glad I found this place recommend by a friend.

Yelp
La Placita "The Little Place", is a hole in the wall restaurant, with comfy booths in a tiny strip mall that I have been coming to for years, now. They call themselves the home of the mini taco, because you can get a plate of 5 mini tacos for about $5.00 for lunch. The mini tacos are, actually, not the best things to get here, though. I mean, they are good, but, there is stuff here that is better. They make SUBLIME Mexican shrimp cocktails. Served in a glass, cooked fresh, in a brothy tomato sauce with avocado slices on top, a cup of lime wedges, saltines and a bottle of Valentina on the side, these are totally traditional. So many Mexican Shrimp cocktails "coctel de camaron" in Austin are wayyy too sweet. This one is perfect. Just the right amount of everything - citrus, broth, tomato, pico de gallo. The chico is find for lunch - the large one is huge. Delicious. The small is only about 5. 95. Pretty much anything this place makes with shrimp is wonderful. They have a plate of sauteed shrimp with onions, peppers and cheese. They have shrimp-filled chile rellenos and shrimp enchiladas. YUM. My perfect lunch there is a fresh squeezed glass of carrot juice (they make it while you wait) and the shrimp cocktail. They also serve whole fried fish, homemade gorditas, tortas, etc. Their meats that they can put into taco and tortas include the good stuff -- tripitas, chiccharron, lengua, al pastor, barbacoa - all the good traditional stuff. For appetizers, the mushroom and cheese quesadilla can't be beat. Breakfast. Sigh. Breakfast here is wonderful. I don' t think any breakfast plate is over $4.95 and they are wonderful. They have both migas AND chilaquiles, as well as nopales and eggs, chicharron and eggs, chorizo and eggs, huevos Mexicanos, huevos rancheros, all kinds of goodness on a plate with beans and potatoes and tortillas. Cheap breakfast tacos, too. The folks who run this place are super sweet and they will keep your salsa bowls full, with delicious homemade green and red salsa with chips that are brought to you as soon as you sit down. Yes, its a small homely place, but it is very clean and one of my favorite places in Austin.

Yelp
The food wasn't terrible. The Server checked on us only once during the meal but only after she checked on the table across from us twice. It's a very small place with a big menu. It's also pricey. We would not have normally gone there had I not had a Restaurant. Com Certificate which they refuse to accept. They said they weren't taking them anymore. Their suppose to accept all that are sold. I bought mine on 10/14/18. It's bad business not to finish what you start. I find this place kind of Shady. They should have contacted Restaurant. Com and explained why they weren't accepting the Certificates. Instead they lure people to their business using the advertisement then refuse to accept the Certificates. They figure they have a fifty, fifty chance on the people staying like we did. It was apparent because the Server asked us if we were going to stay when she gave us a NO on the Certificate. I can't recommend this place.
google avatar

Aaron J.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite places to grab migas before work. Over time the prices have gone up and the quality has gone down.

Yelp
This place is conviently located a couple of blocks down my street.I have eaten here more than 30 times and the food is solid. The service is very polite. If you are looking for authentic and good Mexican food I really recommend you try this place. The chile con queso is the best in austin.Their best two dishes in my opinion are the gorditas and the pork chop plate. They tortillas are very good not floury or undercooked like other austin basses chain tex/mex restraints.GO and Eat good Food now.

Angela G.

Yelp
Had the enchiladas they were delish, staff is attentive, location is convenient. Service was fast and food was hot and yummy. Nice quiet home feel loved it and will be back.

Yelp
Amazing food great sevice i have no complaints i literally walked out full with $5.00

Megan W.

Yelp
Best Chicken tortilla soup I've ever had!! 4 stars instead of 5 because the consistency is terrible, sometimes they forget the cheese, the rice or the guac, one time they forgot the chicken. :( I always get food to go, maybe they are better if you eat there...
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
Since I first visit this place it has been my #1 mexican restaurant...love the food and the ppl and the steak poblano (minus the bacon) is slamming. they make a really great and cheap borrito that has quenched my hunger on many occasions and a strawberry smothy thingy thts totally awesome....i highly recommend this restaurant to everyone

Daniel S.

Yelp
Exceptional Mexican food! I come here twice a week and am never disappointed. The food is excellent and cheap. The service is A+!

Eliza S.

Yelp
Classic dive setting but they serve a good shrimp cocktail. Only thing that kept it from being great was that it could have been a little colder. Plenty of shrimp for a small and lots of crackers to go with it. Had to get my own menu but no big deal, the place is small enough to almost reach out and grab one. Good prices. Got some tacos to go for lunch tomorrow but the carne guisada did not make it. Too good to wait. Lots of gravy and super tender meat chunks, not pieces, chunks. 1st time there, let's see if they can keep up the quality. Parking is sketchy, best if you go in a truck.
