MiMo Miami’s 12 Best Restaurants | Eater Miami

"Pubbelly mastermind Jose Mendin has channeled his Puerto Rican roots for his latest restaurant, La Placita. The colorful space is hard to miss with its bright Puerto Rican flag decorating the front of the space. Inspired by San Juan’s colorful Mercado Santurce, which locals call “La Placita,” it recently transformed itself into four different eateries including grab-and-go juice bar, farmer’s market, a taqueria, plus a full-service eatery with plates ranging from $5-19. Available for takeout and dine-in." - Carlos Olaechea

Look Inside Jose Mendin’s New Puerto Rican Food Mecca, La Placita | Eater Miami

"Channeling his Puerto Rican roots, Jose Mendinhas opened La Placita in the former Balans space at 6789 Biscayne Boulevard in MiMo on New Year’s Day, teaming up with Latin American TV and soap-opera star Julian Gil. I note the menu is inspired by San Juan’s Mercado Santurce and leans into Puerto Rican street-food flavors—arepas filled with octopus, conch, or ceviche; salted cod fritters; a Puerto Rican-Spanish seafood stew; and a sweet plantain, short rib and béchamel pie—while the main attraction is a “Mofongo Shop” where guests can build their own mofongo combos topped with proteins like shredded beef and garlic shrimp. The colorful interiors mimic Old San Juan, and every weekend the venue’s 6,000-square-foot semi-private space turns into “Market Days” with local South Florida vendors, live music, food and entertainment. The opening has been swirled in controversy over an exterior mural rendition of the Puerto Rican flag painted by Hector Collazo Hernandez—the restaurant says the mural was approved but neighbors disagree, and because the building sits in the Miami Modern historic district the restaurant did not apply to the historic preservation board before commissioning the painting; the site, built in 2009 and not listed as historic, now has 30 days to address the mural with the city or may have to paint it over, though reps say they are working with local entities and more than 80,000 people have signed a petition to keep the mural. La Placita is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; for more information call 305-400-8173." - Olee Fowler

Some of the best tacos I’ve ever had! The birria tacos were incredible; tender, flavorful meat and a rich, delicious broth that tasted freshly made. The fried chicken tacos were also amazing and huge! The crispy shell paired with juicy grilled chicken was a perfect combo. We also ordered chips with red and green salsa, both were excellent. The red had a nice kick, and the green was super fresh. Definitely a must-visit spot if you’re a taco lover!

I came to check this place out. Ultimately I was not impressed. Didn't seem to particularly stand out from the thousands of other similar taco places. When I ordered I told them I can't eat pork. So when I got the tacos I ordered it had pork rinds inside the tacos. Flavor was mediocre. Location was not great. You have to park in the back of the building and walk all the way around in the South Florida heat. And there is no sidewalk so when you are walking around the building you are walking on the one-way road that allows cars to get into the parking lot in the back so it feels like an accident waiting to happen. There are few taco places that I feel are worth the price. Tacos are supposed to be cheap. But for some reason, people think it's okay to charge 15 dollars for 3 tiny tacos. I don't get it and it shouldn't be normalized if you ask me.

This is one of my favorite Mexican food places in the area. The place is clean, the staff is friendly and the food is delicious. I got a burrito al pastor and my wife got tacos🌮. Both were tasty and had good portions. The nachos were also something special, which we enjoyed and ended up getting more to take home.

I was not expecting an authentic Mexican meal here since the atmosphere did not give it that vibe- more cute than good food. The food was meh- extremely salty and no real good flavor. I got the birria quesadilla,Bad hombre and campechano tacos. Salty- everything was not enjoyable, the birria consomé was trash. Overall, the food was not great. The service however was nice. Very attentive- no complaints. Would not go back for expensive not tasty food. Not worth the calories. They did have Mexican coke available, so I guess that’s a plus.

This is a cute little place that recently opened! The atmosphere is enjoyable and the place is very well decorated and super clean. Service was great! The cashier was very helpful when I ordered. They let me know they had just opened a few weeks ago. We ordered some birria tacos and crispy chicken tacos. The birria tacos were very tasty! The crispy tacos we thought were regular tortillas with fried chicken, but they were actually flautas. We also ordered a side of guacamole and chips and they were very tasty. A bummer they didn’t have horchata because they said the demand for it hasn’t been that high. I highly recommended this place if you are in the area! P.S. they are waiting on their alcohol license and should have it soon 😀 Overall, it was a great experience and would come again. Please support local places like this one!

It’s been a while since I’ve been meaning to try out this new local taco spot. I came in on a Sunday and ordered 3 birria and one chorizo and potato taco. I ordered to go so my partner and I could sit out on the beach while giving it a try. Chips and salsa were free and the birria came with a side of rice that I have to say was delicious. The birria is my wife’s favorite and so she was the real reviewer, she gives them a 8/10 which is solid. The consume she gives a 10 and I can agree it was soo flavorful! I’d give the overall experience and food an 8.5/10. The service was quick and the food was good. Only thing I will say is that if you’re interested in trying different types of tacos you’re only allowed to purchase 3 of the same, only exception is to add one to your plate (hence the one chorizo and potato taco). Which I hope in the future will change. Would come back!

Wow! La Placita Taco Grill is a must-try in NM Beach! 🌮 The nachos are outstanding—perfectly portioned for two and full of flavor. The tacos (three per order) are absolutely delicious, the guacamole is fresh and tasty, and the Mexican salsas are the real deal. The service is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home. Yes, parking is limited to just 2 or 3 cars, and the place might not catch your eye from the outside, but trust me—it’s 100% worth the visit. A true hidden gem you’ll want to come back to!
