The Best Mezcalerías in Oaxaca City | Eater

"Occupying a lively corner on the calle M. García Vigil, La Popular is, as its name suggests, quite popular. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, “La Popu,” with its ever-changing art displays, offers a fun and casual environment for an easy meal, a chela, and a tasty house mezcal. The mezcal is sourced locally and includes some nice picks from Miahuatlán (Cuixe, Tepextate, Mexicano). Another reason for a mezcalito here is what’s just across the street: the consistently delicious street food stand Empanadas Nocturnas del Carmen, which serves late-night empanadas de amarillo and memelas de queso." - Niki Nakazawa

We happened to stumble upon La Popular by accident while trying to find another restaurant, and we’re so glad we did as the food was great and we ended up going back the next day. The food was tasty with nice flavours throughout. Portion sizes weren’t very big, but everything I tried was enjoyable. On the first day we waited around 10 minutes for a table, which was absolutely fine as the restaurant was full. I ordered the fillet of fish with rice and salad – the salad looked quite basic but was actually very nice and lightly dressed. One friend had the salmon special and the other ordered a beef dish. We all had lemonade, which came in a large fish-bowl-style glass and tasted homemade. On the second day we all ordered the garlic and pepper prawns (we asked if they could be served out of the shell, which they happily did), with rice and salad. They were tasty, but there were only five prawns each so we were still a little hungry afterwards – a few more would have been perfect. Also the prawns were not at all spicy and didn’t taste too much of garlic. Overall, the food, ambience and service were great. Definitely give it a try if you’re visiting Oaxaca. I will definitely be back ☺️

La Popular Named correctly 100% full of locals, greats vibes, and delicious food. Services itself was calm and honestly not needed. You get a great view of the street perfect for views and conversation. The food spoke for itself. México city’s restaurant scene was quite disappointing if I’m being honest but Oaxaca absolutely smashed it out of the park on the first go. We had the Pozole (spicy chicken soup) and Caldo De Camarón (spicy shrimp soup) during a rainy day! Meal for the mood and was packed full of flavour strong 9.1/10 Paired with torta carnitas which was fantastic with the soups! The Salsas were fresh and tasty! Mojitos some of the best I’ve had on the trip so far. Really hard to find a fault in this place especially with the reasonable pricing!

There are two La Populars, the one on Google maps and its smaller sister one block north. Where we ate a few times last year. This is where I am and it’s my favorite. The art alone is reasonable to come but the food is great, beer selection unparalleled, and staff as always in this City me encanta, perfecto. I ate the salmon. Shut the front door it was perfect and I’m from the salmon capital of the world (Seattle).

Maybe I was starving or maybe it’s legit, but this hit me as one of the best meals I’ve had. I had the pulpo and a margarita. The beans, the sauces and the simple yet rich and full flavors of all the sauces and ingredients hit hard. Octopus is my favorite dish and this hit hard! I felt like Julia child, I nearly screamed on my first bite of each sauce. High recommend!

Food was tasty, the Pulpo Tlayuda was packed with meat and was delicious. The Mole Negro con Pollo was also a nice dish, especially if you like black mole. Service was quite slow however, we wanted to continue drinking after our first round but staff didn’t seem to want to continue serving us after dropping off meals.

The space was smaller than expected. Food quality was good though. Prices are average for the location. Service is slightly rough due to business in the evening.

It's called La Popular for a reason. Love this place and always return. Fun , noisy , non pretentious atmosphere with delicious food. Sometimes you have to wait for a table as it is tiny (you can also try La Popular Otra just up the street ). Super sweet servers.
