Best Migas in Austin | Eater Austin

"Down in Garrison Park, the Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant’s breakfast migas are a great bet, served alongside potatoes, beans, and tortillas. There’s an option to swap the standard ranchero sauce for queso. There are indoor dine-in services." - Erin Russell

Hot damn! I wish this place was closer to us. The place itself has lots of seating, booths and tables. The service is great, staff is very friendly and gives you time to look over the menu. The chip were fresh and hot, and the salsa very yummy. They had a lot of options on the menu and our food was absolutely delicious! We saw they have margarita specials but we didn’t order them. The portion size was awesome and we would definitely be back if in the area again! Definitely a must stop if you want some good Mexican food.

Google
This restaurant has a charming atmosphere and a welcoming staff, which made for a pleasant dining experience. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite match the vibe. We ordered the mole plate and the nachos especiales, and both were disappointingly bland. The queso was fine but nothing memorable, while the salsa was the standout of the meal—fresh and flavorful. If they put as much care into seasoning the dishes as they do their salsa, this place could be great.

Jose Antonio

Google
For the first time while driving in the area. Places like this they should be able to exist forever, good flavor on the food and great quality margaritas for sure. The servers are great which is a better reason to go to this place so you have all the VIP attention while eating. The place get packed during dinner time and that’s because the food is great and the service too.

Google
Came here because other reviews… I love authentic Mexican food, but sorry to say this was not it. Food was bland. Chicken mole tasted very different I was able to sample the sauce and I’m glad I did. I can’t put my finger on it but it tasted different from any chicken mole I’ve ever tasted in my life The ground beef inside of the tacos was flavorless the cheese enchiladas had so much cheese that, thats all I could even taste. The Sopapillas were overcooked, very dry and difficult to eat. Three things that were good were their tortillas, charro beans, and Mexican margarita.

Google
We were excited to try this place. We were in town and like hole in the wall Tex-Mex restaurants, and we saw that they had homemade tortillas. The food was so bland. The beans running. Just not impressed at all. Two stars only because service was good.

Erin Larkin

Google
The food was so tasty! Generous portions and friendly staff!

Google
Very chill place with quick and friendly service, big portions, reasonable prices, and great Tex-Mex! The fresh-made tortillas are an excellent touch. Also refreshing when a place offers free chips and salsa.

Google
The old number one for folks in the westgate area when it comes to tex-mex. Been going here for 25 years. Old timers will say more. I've literally eaten everything on the menu. There is nothing I would not recommend. Seat yourself, get greeted with chips and salsa, order drinks and eats promptly. Pay up front at cashier. What else could you ask for? Every time! THANK GOD there are still, at least, a few REAL places like this.

Alyssa R.

Yelp
OUR GO TO MEXICAN RESTAURANT. The best small place for mexican food in south austin, we love the authenticity and servers know us well. the beef enchiladas are fantastic.
google avatar

Michaela P.

Yelp
Ol' Skool Tex-Mex. The kind where the plate comes to the table at 300 degrees. Food is good. Service is sweet but a little slow. Chips are from a bag and salsa is kinda bland. Nice prices.

Yelp
Great service. Amazing food. Tortilla soup, Tampiqueno plate, cheeseburgers, Queso all tasted great.

Yelp
This is the absolute best Mexican restaurant to go to for Enchiladas. I've been coming here for years and years and ever since getting the cheese enchiladas the first visit, I've never ordered anything different. If you're in the Austin area or any surrounding city, this place is TOTALLY worth the drive. I take everyone visiting town to this restaurant. Service is also great and very friendly and the atmosphere is nice. It's not too big or too small and they even have a party room which I've rented out on more than one occasion. If you've never been here, you absolutely need to plan a visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Our first visit to La Posada was a bustling one, for sure a beloved choice among the locals. The prices are reasonable, service commendable, and the food satisfying. We are certainly planning a return visit. Kudos!

Yelp
If you like un- authentic Mexican food with nothing made fresh or from scratch- this is the place for you. Taco Bell is better

Yelp
Lived across the street for a few years and finally tried it. Now have been twice in two weeks. Great standard Tex mex. Very filling and great value.

Yelp
Tonight we went here for dinner after not coming here in years. Combination Plates one with crispy beef taco bean toastda rice bean and cheese enchiladas. And beef taco guacamole rice beans and queso. All was hot fresh and tasty and a good price they were busy but we were waited on quickly and had great service. We will be back for sure.

Yelp
This place is great, especially for the price. Whenever we want Tex-mex, this is our go-to spot. Their margarita was decent and we've liked everything we have ordered so far. My favorite is the burrito plate with shredded chicken. The burrito is huge, enough to take half of it home. It's packed to the brim with seasoned shredded chicken and covered in a red sauce with a hint of spice and cheese. It's also served with salad and rice. We last visited on a Friday evening so it was packed. We only had to wait about 20 minutes for a table because the employees are always quick to clean tables and get everyone seated. I was surprised we didn't have to wait long for our food either. Im sure we'll be back!

William C.

Yelp
The worst cheese dip I think I've ever seen at a Mexican restaurant...like melted nacho cheese, super goopy...the other stuff was sub par....soggy quesadillas...really really slow service
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place since I was a kid. It used to be a family owned place (maybe it still is? I'm not sure but I think it changed hands). What I like about it is they really do AUTHENTIC Tex mex and Mexican food. They have a really delicious flauta plate that I like, and this place has delicious complimentary chips and salsa but BEWARE - I do think it's the spiciest complimentary salsa I've ever had in a restaurant. The ambiance is very old school diner-like and that's probably because it's been in the same place for years and they haven't renovated. It's nothing fancy, but makes for a decent brunch/lunch place (although like I said - there are much nicer/fancier places for Mexican food/Tex mex if that's what you're looking for). The last few times I've gone here the servers have been really nice, so pleased from that standpoint. While I wouldn't overall recommend going out of your way to eat here, if you were craving Tex mex and nearby, I definitely think this place is a reliable and tasty option to satisfy the craving.

Yelp
La Posada is a hidden Tex mex gem in the south Austin community. The menu is vast as is their drink selection and the portions are incredibly huge! I especially looove their chips and house salsa. Their salsa has a little bit of heat to it which is nice. The food is really good, but with their combination plates everything seems to taste all the same. Unless you get green chicken enchiladas, mole, or tamales. The drinks are crazy good for the price, I have to be careful! Service can be slow when they're super busy. I don't think they're short staffed per say, more it just depends on who your server is. However they're all super nice and sweet. This is a pretty affordable bang for your buck kind of Tex mex restaurant.

Yelp
We went here last night at 8:30 pm, happy to find a place open until 10:00. The waitress seemed to be in a hurry so we ordered the first draft beer she mentioned. That keg turned out to be empty, not a biggie, but maybe a hint to the remainder of the visit. We ordered our food, finished off the chips and a tiny cup of salsa, ordered more of that. Got the salsa, but never any chips. The food came, nothing outstanding but ok. Just a couple of minutes into the meal, someone wheels a mop bucket full of some toxic ammonia based cleaner through the dining area, past our booth, then proceeds to carry it up the stairs behind us and begins mopping. We all got a major dose of fumes, one person had to get up and leave before throwing up. The couple in the booth behind us had the same reaction. A guy at another table said "yeah, they do that every night around this time... it's really annoying." It never did dissipate, so we had to leave. We mentioned it to the server and the girl at the checkout, both couldn't care less. $80 tab. Guessing it's not cost effective to keep staff around and clean after regular business hours, so just be prepared to dine in a janitor's closet if you go here at night. This place is Fabuloso!

Yelp
Surprised we just heard about this place, considering they've been in business for over 25+ years! Had an absolutely delicious dinner. They are shortstaffed, so there may be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Even though they were busy, the staff was very friendly and served us warm chips and delicious (and spicy!) salsa to start. The frozen margaritas are now one of my favorites in the city. Definitely recommend the Avocado Relleno--it was deliciously seasoned and the chicken was very tender. Can't wait to go back!

Barbara F.

Yelp
Great food! Great Service! Been going here for 20 yrs. Love the breakfast tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas.

Yelp
****Best Frozen House Margarita**** You must read to understand why. First of all I finally found a margarita thats a "10"...Have you ever had a margarita you liked but couldn't enjoy....brain freezes, your chest hurting, headaches, etc...we get a older and we analyze it all...this margarita its perfect!! How its frozen consistency flows and melts without that harsh snap and cold jolt...right amount of alcohol...too much is too much...the mix is just right...no sourness as of fresh lime that burns your throat. A plastic margarita glass...less weight, easier to pick up, less condensation...this margarita has all the benefits from drinking alcohol...no side effects!!! You have to have one here...and as i prefer a margarita with chili powder on rim its not the standard. Please dont show up here i dont want this place to get anymore crowded....only been here twice...friendly staff, amazing enchiladas, and quite possibly the best Mexican restaurant you will find in a random plaza!!!!

Kathryn R.

Yelp
I've had breakfast and dinner at this restaurant, and both times did not disappoint! Service is great. Food is great. It gets packed, but it's worth the wait!

Yelp
Unfortunately I'm providing a negative review on a to-go order of their Chicken Verde Dinner. After eating this meal I contracted food poisoning. I consumed this dish last Saturday September 24th 2022. My thinking is the chicken was either contaminated, undercooked, or spoiled. I typically order their lunch dishes and enjoy their chicken & beef fajita tacos . These meals have been delicious. Also, their frozen margaritas are a local favorite. I'm going to take a break from La Posada for the time being. The wait staff has always been friendly. My critique is with the cook on this specific entree. Consumer Beware!

Yelp
I discovered this south Austin gem through a Nextdoor thread talking about favorite Tex-Mex joints in Austin. I'd never heard of it but peoples' comments were great and merited a trip from the northwest to give it a shot. It's a wonderful neighborhood place with very friendly service and yummy food. We were welcomed and treated like regulars. Tea glass and coffee cup never got more than half empty. I had the migas because of great reviews here on Yelp and I wasn't a bit disappointed. They normally come with bell peppers but I substituted serranos and loved it. I'll be back, even with the long drive to get there.

Yelp
Every Monday a bunch of us meet at a Mexican restaurant in South Austin. La Posada has become our home base due to their food and service and most importantly the ease at which they can separate checks within a big party. They are very accommodating and friendly. Thanks again guys!

Jacqi B.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 26 years. Family run and you feel like family when you come in. Great margaritas and staff! I love their breakfast, lunch specials (crispy beef tacos(!), and dinner-steak a la Mexicana, Carne guisada, stuffed avocado. We love La Posada!
google avatar

Yelp
Great pulled chicken enchiladas! Very underrated and afforadably priced; will be back soon
google avatar

Anita C.

Yelp
I struggle with this review because I can't decide between 3 or 4. The service was extremely slow and poor. They seem so disorganized. It took forever to place a drink order than another wait to place food order. Now onto the food...I got the carne guisada plate and it was extremely disappointing and bland. It's my second time ordering this dish in general and I had great luck at cruzteca and that's why I ordered it here. Do not order this. However, they had great salsa and my boyfriend ordered the super combo that came with an enchilada with their sauce. THAT was amazing and we both want to come back just for the enchilada. I just don't know if we would be willing to endure the poor customer service.
google avatar

Shama P.

Yelp
I'm honestly not surprised by how I felt about this place, but I wanted to try it. With other similar priced and style restaurants around, this one is just not the one to pick. Will you get fed? Sure. Does the food work? I guess. But I got a cheese enchilada and it was like a cheddar cheese? And it was not soft like one would expect. Most of the food I got in my combo was on the blander side. The salsa was nice, so it found it's way onto every part of my plate. The booth seats were cracking and had like holes in them and such. Not for me.
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
We love coming here for their breakfast items, the food here is always so good and the service is great too!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Came into town and stopped for lunch on a recommendation. The service was very nice, but a few of us ordered the cheese enchilada lunch special and it was made with velveta or some type of processed cheese. Not good. The chicken tacos were average and the margarita was very little for the price. I rarely give low reviews, but considering there are many choices for this type of food I feel like I would like to know.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Great spot! Authentic Mexican food with a bit of a twist. We tried all the tacos and loved the steak ! Great ambience and service was decent! Recommend but they are new....
google avatar

Daysi L.

Yelp
My boyfriend took me here because he liked it. They have some really good salsa that's pretty spicy. We got the fajitas for two for likeeee $30. It came with our own rice and beans and a plate of pico, cheese, sour cream and guac. Everything was seasoned very well even the pico. I hate when food doesn't have enough salt but they did super good. The fajitas were delicious! will be coming back cause i need to try their tortilla soup.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
Very unassuming look from the outside. Turns out the place has been around for over 20 years! For starters, chips came out nice and warm and the salsa was great (bit on the spicy side) The carne guisada was awesome and comes with either corn or flour tortillas. Would highly recommend getting this dish! One of the best parts were their margaritas. Nicely frozen with a good kick to them, looking forward to dropping in for some more of these. Overall simple little place that has great food and drinks!

Yelp
4.5 stars. This was our first tex-mex meal during our texas trip. The menu was varied and prices were great. Server ladies were also super sweet and attentive. We had the pork chop dish and combo #2. Everything was good, except the ground beef in the taco could have used a bit more seasoning. We also started with a chile con queso - for some reason we were expecting something with a slight more spicy kick to it, but this just seemed like melted cheese sauce. This is our first "real" queso, so maybe our expectations were misplaced. Still tasty though. The complimentary salsa was more spicy than I was used to though! We also added on a pastor taco, the meat was flavorful and I tasted the slight pineapple flavor. For me the standout was the tres leches cake. The perfect amount of sweetness and milk-soaked cake. I wish I could take some back to NY with me!

Shuck A.

Yelp
Food was great and service is excellent Rather inexpensive by today's standards Quite full afterwards is nap time lol Average price is under 20.00 per person Including drink and reasonable tip

James C.

Yelp
Food and drinks are delicious! Ambiance is great and the service is always good. We eat here once a week it is so good!

Marlene D.

Yelp
Customer service waitress is very rude. I'll make sure not to sit in your section next time. Food is really good. However if that waitress had not been serving me I would have enjoyed it more

Richard D.

Yelp
Top notch service! Great food, Beef FajitasCarne & Beef Enchiladas were the best . I recommend calling and ordering Togo if your in a hurry as the get pretty busy. Definitely a must try!

Yelp
After living in South Austin for over 10 years now La Posada is definitely a go-to spot for Tex Mex eats and drinks. I love their homemade limonada (lemonade) and that they have white cheese as an option to cover your meal in! Breakfast tacos are nice and fat just like you want them and a fairly decent price. When you order tacos to-go the staff is super nice enough to wrap a small white napkin around the foiled taco with the name of what the taco is. This is super helpful especially for me when I order at least half - a dozen tacos each order. My partner really touts La Posada's al pastor tacos here as he really enjoys the nice charred al pastor mixed in with the finely chopped pineapple and onions. Do note that the al pastor tacos are defaulted on flour tortillas and includes cheese so if you are not down with that you will need to let them know you want those on corn tortillas and no cheese. Happy Hour specials during the week are worth visiting La Posada alone as they have some great deals on food AND margs as well. Check the chalkboard above the kitchen window area as they have all specials for happy hour listed including the timeframe (which I believe is 3pm-6pm). You will have to double check that time. Otherwise La Posada is a great Tex Mex staple to have in Austin and offers wonderful options for food and has great service every time we visit.

Alana S.

Yelp
Our go-to for Mexican food! Best fajitas, great service. The homemade tortillas are delicious. The salsa is spicy and great. Can't go wrong with La Posada.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a gem of a neighborhood restaurant and bar. Great food, servers are always friendly and great drinks. Grab some wedding cookies to take home while you're checking out.
google avatar

Carmella M.

Yelp
It was real Tex-Mex food very tasty seasoning with all them spices , Mexican Margarita not the best I've ever had but I did drink it all . I will be going again the crispy taco was good the tortilla soup was cheesy . It was clean and friendly place to go.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but this is the best Mexican food joint I've been to in awhile. Constant water and chip basket refills. Great tasting queso. The nachos are very hearty and the quesadillas were delicious. I spied some tasty margs from across the way but I'll have to try those next time. This is my new go-to on the south side of Austin.
google avatar

Ralph S.

Yelp
This is our first time here. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The food was as delicious. I had the Spanish omelette which comes with potatoes and refried beans. It also comes with homemade corn or flour tortillas. We chose the corn. They were sooo good! We will certainly be back because the lunch menu looks really great. The prices here are very reasonable and the food is generous.

Kathy B.

Yelp
Always AWESOME food and service! We love going to LaPosada everytime we visit our daughter in Austin. Everythng we've had here has been the best Tex-Mex and the margaritas are super good! My husband loves the enchiladas with a fried egg on top! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Earl R.

Yelp
We have eaten there regularly since they first opened for business. Great food and drinks. Best Caldos in town and best corn tortillas in Austin!
google avatar

Kip S.

Yelp
My friend gave La Posada high marks and I wanted to like it, but lackluster service and poor management overshadowed slightly above average food. Our server was nice, but it seemed as though he was the only one on the floor. Perhaps he was the only one in the kitchen as well because it took more than a half hour, probably closer to 45 minutes, to get our food. Salsa is served in an excruciatingly small bowl, refills were sparse and I never got the extra tortillas I requested. I had the carnitas, which were strangely cut into cubes and had the consistency of a roast rather than slow cooked pork butt. The optional chipotle sauce was pretty good, but these were below average carnitas by any metric. Pair that with the fact that they were served with two, that's right, only two, tortillas and it made for a lackluster experience. The margaritas were fairly stout, which helped to mitigate the frustration with the slow service, but there are damn near an infinite number of Mexican restaurants in Austin and La Posada blew its chance to reel me in as a repeat customer. All that said, much of this negativity could've been diffused had the woman who appeared to be in charge visited our table to apologize for the shitty service. People get sick, shit happens, I get it, but when shit hits the fan, it's up to the manager to deal with the situation. And rather than jump in and help the lone server, she rolled silverware in the corner and seemed wholly uninterested in lending a hand. If you live in the neighborhood and are a fan of La Posada, this review probably won't impact your appreciation of the place. Fair enough. Maybe they just had an off night, but the food wasn't anywhere near good enough to overlook the poor service.

Yelp
What can I say...when I find a spot that I love that treats me well I'm completely loyal. I've been going to this place since I was a broke college student when they'd give me and my friend free chips and salsa to go after our meal! This is a staple for me. This time I tried something new. I ventured away from my usual para las damas plate and tried the carnitas a la mexicana. I wasn't expecting the cubes of meat as when I think of carnitas I think of the shredded pork style. But it was very good! The meat was incredibly tender. The flavor was great because you got a kick of spice whenever you hit one of the fresh jalapenos. This dish is truly tex-mex perfection. I didn't have what is probably the best thing here...DRINKS!!!! Their margaritas are legendary! Strong, tasty and a perfect match to anything on the menu. But dry January has me ruining the beginning of the year for myself because writing this I can't believe I didn't have just one! I might have to go back and make my January a little drizzly :)

William N.

Yelp
After not being able to two previous Mexican restaurants open, we ended up here and noticed a large crowd inside. We thought that would result in a good experience. The wait staff was professional and fast. The hot sauce and chips were great. However, neither one of us enjoyed our dinners. That was unfortunate. Maybe it was a bad night for us. Check out was quick.

Marissa Z.

Yelp
Love my cozy neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Everyone is so nice and most of their servers have been there for years and know people by name and family. Have had many private parties there too. Food never disappoints and the drinks are always good! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tom R.

Yelp
Being from San Antonio and visiting Austin often see my son and his wonderful wife, I am always looking for good Mexican food. This is the restaurant that beats anything I have found an awesome or North San Antonio. The hot sauce is fantastic the service is off the chart wonderful. It is not a fancy restaurant but the food makes up for anything but someone may find against the restaurant. My wife ordered the Mexican plate and loved it. My son ordered the carne guida plate and could not say enough good things about it. I had the Menudo and a crispy beef taco and it was as good as anything I've ever had in San Antonio. We all had a house margarita which was very good and a large size for the price. The chips and hot sauce that they serve you while waiting for your order or some of the best you'll ever have, if you are alittle shy with heat It's good but it's warm. I will definitely be coming here again on my next trip to All Star
google avatar

Luis R.

Yelp
Super standard mexican food, that being said you can't go wrong. I will say their hot sauce was super duper spicy. Like even for me and i like hot sauce, it was a little overwhelming. Super good. This is the first restaurant in Austin I've been to with prices that are pleasantly priced and you get a large amount of food. This plate i got came with like 5 different things all for 11$. I believe they also have lunch specials. Cheap prices and good abundance of food.

Debbie P.

Yelp
My husband used to take me all the time, but not now. My husband passed away a few years ago so I go now! It's still a good place to go though

Wayne P.

Yelp
My wife ate here on Christmas eve. Since then fraudulent charges appeared on our credit card, Target $132.61 and $145.05 to a latina meat market in Houston. By process of elimination, we SUSPECT the card information was copied by someone at this location. An investigation is underway. If true, how sad is this?
