My friend gave La Posada high marks and I wanted to like it, but lackluster service and poor management overshadowed slightly above average food.
Our server was nice, but it seemed as though he was the only one on the floor. Perhaps he was the only one in the kitchen as well because it took more than a half hour, probably closer to 45 minutes, to get our food. Salsa is served in an excruciatingly small bowl, refills were sparse and I never got the extra tortillas I requested.
I had the carnitas, which were strangely cut into cubes and had the consistency of a roast rather than slow cooked pork butt. The optional chipotle sauce was pretty good, but these were below average carnitas by any metric. Pair that with the fact that they were served with two, that's right, only two, tortillas and it made for a lackluster experience.
The margaritas were fairly stout, which helped to mitigate the frustration with the slow service, but there are damn near an infinite number of Mexican restaurants in Austin and La Posada blew its chance to reel me in as a repeat customer.
All that said, much of this negativity could've been diffused had the woman who appeared to be in charge visited our table to apologize for the shitty service. People get sick, shit happens, I get it, but when shit hits the fan, it's up to the manager to deal with the situation. And rather than jump in and help the lone server, she rolled silverware in the corner and seemed wholly uninterested in lending a hand.
If you live in the neighborhood and are a fan of La Posada, this review probably won't impact your appreciation of the place. Fair enough. Maybe they just had an off night, but the food wasn't anywhere near good enough to overlook the poor service.
