We had to stop in at this new-ish authentic Mexican spot in town. Some of the menu items are a very good value. Flavor overall were pretty good. They have a great variety of fresh salsas that help boost it, full bottles plopped down right on your table. Mmm, that creamy green one is especially yummy. My chimichanga was only $3.99, seriously. It was a good size too, not huge-huge, but just the right size. Flavor wasn't mindblowing, it was pretty good -- it was simple, but had more asada steak than I thought it would, along with refried beans inside. Asada was steaky in flavor like a fajita, cut into large cubes, it could have been a bit more tender. Chimi came smothered in a queso that made me think cheap Velveeta (add some chiles pls). But I'd order it again, for a cheap meal on the go. Adding sides of beans and rice doubles the price. And for some odd reason a regular burrito costs $6.95.
I've also had their carnitas mulitas, which was basically a half-sized quesadilla and pretty filling for only $3.50. Carnitas plentiful and tender with good flavor.
An order of sopapillas are a must here, come 2 per order for $1.49, and are completely covered in cinnamon & sugar -- soft, flaky, very tasty, with a cup of thinned honey to dip in. My husbands cherry chimichanga was premade and hard to eat without a plate to cut it on. The crispy shell had turned chewy and the canned cherries became a bit strong and overwhelming after a few bites. But it was a unique concept, only $2.99, and definitely has potential with some recipe tweaks. There are also other flavors such as peach and apple.
No water cups, only bottled water (grr). Ooo, and my biggest pet peeve..No plates. Just paper trays like with gas station food. I debated dropping half a star just for this, since it makes food harder to eat.
The family running the place is very friendly, but their super cute kids are all over the place, taking up space and tables in an already small dining room. We were forced to watch YouTube gaming videos on their TV the entire time.
They also need to work on the cleanliness some. All of the tables had previous meal spillage on them. Plus the floors are movie theater sticky. Decor is so done on the cheap, it's both funny and endearing, with lots of Pancho Villa and random family and Biblical quotes hung all around. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall kinda place.
So if I lived nearby would I be a regular here? Quite possibly...But probably just for takeout. 3.5 stars.
