Where to Find Denver’s Most Satisfying Mexican Food

"Though it also offers tacos, gorditas, and weekend menudo, this Aurora quick stop is a torteria first and foremost — and a superlative one at that. The whizzes behind the counter whip up more than 20 different sandwiches complete with mayo, frijoles, tomato, onion, thinly sliced avocado, pickled carrots, and jalapeños, yet somehow, even monsters like the Super Cubana with breaded steak, chorizo, ham, pierna (pork leg), egg, and two types of cheese hold together." - Ruth Tobias, Eater Staff

Google
I live an hour away and was looking for food in the area. I tried this place for the first time and it exceeded my hopes. Order at the front and they bring your food to your table. Food came out fast and fresh. Everything was so flavorful, best al pastor tacos I've had in Denver ! The rice had lots of veggies in it and tasted perfect. The guac and chips came with enough for a whole table of people and looked freshly made to! I don't usually write reviews but the service was friendly, love the culture, artwork and music and atmosphere! Also so affordable! I would drive an hour just to come eat here again .

Google
Well my favorite taco truck was closed so we decided to take a chance on La Reyna and it was ok. The food could have had more flavor and spice and a taste of Mexico. The menu was full of options and choices. This was my second time there but I don’t think I’ll visit again. The experience was less friendly however, the colors of the restaurant were bright and vibrant. I ordered chicken tacos and some fries. A little pricy on the fries 🍟

Google
Had a smothered carne asada burrito. Meat was tough and not flavorful. Maybe a small scoop of beans inside, if any. Sauce on top wasn't green Chile, but some watery liquid. Friendly staff, will try the tacos another time.

Google
Figured I would try it out I pass by it every day, glad I did. I had the smothered burrito with carne asada the meat has a crispy texture, the beans are creamy and delicious, the rice nice and fluffy. The green Chile made it all come together with the tortilla very generous portion and worth it.

Google
This place is legit. Everything on the menu is amazing. They allowed me to buy their salsa and I advised them to bottle and sell it! Pretty please with a cherry on top...... Go and experience the best Mexican food ever!

Google
I absolutely love this place. The tacos are so flavorful. The rice & beans are always perfect. And the frescas are delicious! I was allowed to sample all four flavors and every single one was delicious. I ended up going with the cucumber & lime and I was not disappointed. This is definitely my go-to taco spot now.

Google
The food is amazing, staff is always really nice! The quesqburirria is amazing as well as the brisket! Salsa is also fresh and delicious! Haven't had a chance to try breakfast yet, but im sure its delicious!

Google
This place is awesome! My first time here I misread the menu and ordered the Birria Plate instead of the Quesabirria Tacos, but it was still absolutely delicious! Today, I got the Quesabirria Tacos, and they were even better than I imagined! My eyes were bigger than my stomach, and I ordered too many tacos for my dinner, but I'm not mad because now I have a super dank snack for later! 😉 The lady who takes the orders is very nice, and so are the guys in the back. I made sure to tell them how tasty the food was and thanked them profusely for providing such a delicious meal. Don't sleep on this place, it's straight fire. 🔥🔥🔥

Yelp
Love it here, it's family owned and their food feels like what you'd eat at someone's house (in a good way). Authentic and delicious. Great portions and the prices are fair. I love their quesabirria tacos, they are something to write home about! We also love getting the carne asada fries. Burritos here are super filling too! I'm obsessed with their Jamaica drink, I get it every time we eat here. Bonus that they carry this local ice cream company's creamy ice pops. I don't remember the business name off the top of my head but their flavors are bomb and it's a great treat, plus a "cool" way to support another local business.

Yelp
I was working on my deep thoughts like Jack Handey when I saw Reyna Azteca's sign next door hyping tacos, but I was like no mames, I'm going to order a torta foo... cuz sometimes you need a torta over a flaca, *wink *wink Most 'ethnic' places in Cowarado know that most of 'you people' have a limited range when it comes to your preferences of meat: like always only ordering carne asada, or beef (de res vs de chivo) for birria, and only tacos or burritos. So, the chances you'll order a torta at a place specializing in tortas.... not a high chance fooo, so they market the tacos but don't be fooled, this place is all about the tortas and aqua frescas. Well, this japones mofo hit up Vassssteee(sp?), the chica working the front who is from Mexico City, and since this is her uncles spot, you know, her Tio, i ordered her favorite which is listed on the lower left side of the menu, the vaquera (cuz cowgirl) with added bacon cuz you know, it's bacon foo. Her tio, a dude who is already onto his 3rd spot cuz dude throws down, and I get why this spot is so highly rated, it's earned. So get your gordo/gorda culo on down to Reyna, a torteria, and try the messssssican version of a sandwich cuz Subway is not cutting it homie... also, you people love your sammiches, so this won't be a stretch (psssss....try the gringa).

Yelp
Very casual but nice vibes. The place was next to a work site I was working at. I got Carne Asada tacos and carne Asada gordita. The place was a bit busy so I did wait a good 10-15 minutes for my food. Maybe try calling ahead if you're short on time. The parking lot was a bit small but I was able to find parking. The lady taking the order speaks English. They have little booths and tables with TVs. Once of the best Mexican places I've had food at. I definitely want to look for more! I have to try the rotates next time.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic Mexican. Large menu. The service was so friendly and efficient. We felt like they really appreciated our patronizing them.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly the food was pretty bland, I got the birria tacos with consome and even the consome lacked flavor. The portions were good but the flavor was just not there. My partner got a torta and asked for no tomato, and for other things in the "build your own torta", but the order was not made as requested. The store looked great though.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Get a Torta! Generous serving sizes. Great mixture of flavors. Delicious. Filling. Authentic with added cocinero's touch. Clean facility and restaurant. Stop reading and start eating!

Yelp
The tortas here are really good, buns are buttery and fluffy and the meat inside is tasty and plentiful. I also really enjoyed the tamarind Augua Fresca, it was sour and refreshing. The inside is also squeaky clean and the staff is really friendly. However, their tacos have some serious issues. While the Chorizo and Asada were delicious, the Al Pastor was an absolute travesty. The pieces of meat in the pastor tacos were not just re-heated but overwhelmingly burnt and black. The pastor meat was not scraped from a trompo, rather just diced and seasoned pork, really lame and not very authentic. The Lengua taco was similar, black and crispy. The last thing you would want in a lengua taco is to hear a loud crunch as you bite in. I would recommend coming in an trying a torta, they're better than average. But based on how the tacos were, the way they prepare/reheat their meat could make this a risky stop.

Yelp
This is the worst restaurant. The food was wrong, they spill water over my mother, they didn't bring us the food of what we order. This whole experience was awful. No discount was given, no "how can we fix this" the manager just printed out receipt. This was horrible. Ambiance awful.

Yelp
I Always drive past this spot off Hampden and wanted to stop in to check it out. The lot is usually always pretty empty so parking is not a problem. The staff was kind and the atmosphere gives you the vibes of authentic. We ordered tacos and Tortas. The tacos were decent and the salsas were mild in flavor, but not bad. I must admit we were a bit disappointed overall and would not return for the tortas. Especially because the pricing is much higher for what we got than we anticipated. I do not see myself returning but wish them the best of luck!

Michael M.

Yelp
The service was amazing, the was perfect. It reminded us of home. The owner is one of the kindest humans I've ever met. We highly recommend this place.

Yelp
We love La Reyna for a nice taco lunch. I am obsessed with their lengua tacos and would eat so many all the time if I could. Menu is easy to identify and the location serves great salsa at the table. Highly recommend La Reyna!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
I can see why La Reyna Azteca made it on the Yelp top 50 list! Tasty food options at a great price and helpful staff, what more could you ask for? I tried the Quesabirria Tacos with consommé and it was just what I needed after a long work day. My only knock on the tacos was that the meat felt dry even with the consommé!
google avatar

Bri A.

Yelp
It was so good and flavorful. The guys at the front were super nice! And the rice was an added bonus, super yummy. Even my son liked it and he is extremely picky. Thank you!

Yelp
Food is exceptional! The birria is so delicious and good size portions! The service has always been good and quick!

Yelp
I grew up in this neighborhood in the 80's and 90's. This location used to be a Taco Bell, so going back felt a little wild. I wasn't sure if they spoke English, so I ordered in Spanish (I'm guessing either is fine). I'm a fan of these little gems, and La Reyna didn't disappoint. The chips are warm, salsa is cold, tacos so good. My husband had a torta for the first time and thought it was great. Even my 12yo liked his quesadilla, and he's a hard man to please. I would definitely come here again when I'm in this part of town.
google avatar

Marcos H.

Yelp
Gotta say it's authentic Mexican food the 3 quesobirras is fire! Comes with consume (a soup to dip the tacos) and the salsas added great flavor green is of course my favorite! Super friendly people I asked what they recommend and they didn't disappoint! As the name suggest the Aztec vibe is awesome love the art on the walls! Can't forget about the horchata comes in a huge cup definitely shareable with your partner!
google avatar

Adelita M.

Yelp
My husband and I come here religiously for tacos every Monday or Tuesday. I came here throughout my pregnancy. I've been coming here for years since moving to Colorado. These are the best tacos in Colorado and will never stop coming here.

Nicholas C.

Yelp
What a great family owned restaurant. Son of the owner was working and helped me pick what I would like most. Food was fantastic if I'm ever in the area I'll be swinging by here again.

Yelp
I've eaten at this place before but this time I took a friend with me so she could try it out as well, she ordered the quesobarrilas .and I had the carne asada fries with tripe and we both shared a bit off each other's food to try them out. Both were good as usual and she said that this place was her new go to location for authentic mexican and was glad I showed her the place as she had driven by it all the time and never gone in. The staff is kind and if I didn't know what a menu item was they would explain it to me, the food was affordable and come out in fairly large portions in addition to being delicious. If I had one thing to say about it that was bad, if that, was that theocratic can get a bit cramp during the lunch rush, otherwise an amazing place for a torta or other Mexican foods.

Heather M.

Yelp
Food is delicious and the service is second to none. Quaint and authentic, their restaurant is great
google avatar

Frantsy R.

Yelp
The worst! Got 3 Asada tacos and 1 Gordita and the meat was tough, crispy and had a hair in it. Disgusting.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
My husband and I tried for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised! Food was fantastic! Not a fancy place but go for the food, not the atmosphere. Only negative: you order at the counter which means no chips and salsa at your table and no refills on drinks. Still would recommend and we will go back.
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
The food tastes amazing. I haven't had a torta and agua de horchata this good since I would vacation on the Mexico-Texas border. The portions are large and for a great price. The staff was very friendly and prompt. Will definitely be a regular!

Teresa C.

Yelp
The food here is DELICIOUS, and the people are incredibly friendly and helpful. We love the quesabirrias and the tacos. We will be trying more menu items the more we visit, as it has all been fantastic. If you haven't tried this place, you are missing out!
google avatar

Erin T.

Yelp
Love this place! We've lived in the area for a while now and haven't been able to find "our" spot. This is it!! Everything we had was excellent and we didn't even have a Torta but will be back to have one.
google avatar

Yelp
I've decided, in the new year, I would start reviewing restaurants in Colorado since moving here. This restaurant was the first I went to and I had the quesabirria meal with consome. it was absolutely delicious! I cannot remember the name of the young man who rang me up for my food but he was very kind and the food came out in a timely manner. The prices aren't out of this world expensive and the many options are extensive and inviting! I can't wait to come in sometime in the weekend and get an order or menudo.

Sam C.

Yelp
great food and great people. breakfast Is amazing. Birra tacos are the bomb. Salsa is on point. gotta try this place
google avatar

Jackson L.

Yelp
First off the food was fire. But the best part , was that they give you sauce bottles so you can use as much sauce as you want! Also, the cashier was super kind and friendly. Santi was the cashier name on the receipt. He even poured us water and brought it to us when he didn't have to! Great place
google avatar

Yelp
Missed the 11am deadline for breakfast burritos, so I ordered the Torta Suspiro de Monja (a balanced chorizo torta, egg, franks, fresh cheese in a well formed bread). All tortas include pinto beans, mayonnaise, tomato, onion, avocado, and a choice of chipotle or jalapeño. And I ordered a Taco Taliban (flour tortilla, marinated pork, melted cheese, grilled onions, and pineapple). Absolutely delicious food, and very friendly & helpful customer service.

Yelp
Service is TEN Stars! Food, is ok. Denver is blessed with a HUGE list of mexican-inspired food. This part of town has an abundance. Right now, the best is a food truck in the parking lot at the Southwest corner of Hampden and Yosemite. But what the food cart is missing is this ray of happiness that runs the register at La Reyna Azteca. She is so helpful and enthusiastic about their food, you are convinced it will be great before you finish the order. The Talibán taco is a house specialty. It is nicely balanced and not too filling to be wrecked for trying others. It has a nice sweet, spicy balance and the flour tortilla is grilled lightly for added crunch. The Barbacoa and Pollo tacos are nice street taco three biters. Try em with their housemate green salsa. I was less impressed with the El Pastor and Carne Asada tacos. I found both to be shallow in flavor. Not inedible but just meh. Multiple reviews have gushed over the Carne Asada Fries. These aren't a true menu item but the kitchen will create a basket for you with enthusiasm. The enthusiasm is awesome! The fries with their carne asada, just ok. In full disclosure, I ate here without drugs on board. The pipeline of people that came in after us and just ordered the C.A. Fries were trailing the morcheba cloud. Maybe that's the secret ingredient missing from my experience. Oh but the service is spectacular!!!!

Yelp
Ordered two breakfast burritos (1 sausage and 1 bacon) on a Sunday morning. It took them about 30 minutes to make. The burritos were $7 each... Plus they were super dry and they lacked salsa/chili inside of them. Also the sausage was burnt. Probably won't come back... There are way too many other Mexican joints to check out.

J. R. D.

Yelp
Was craving some good shrimp tacos. Came here and wanted just three tacos and they wanted to charge me the price of the full meal with beans and rice. No way am I paying this rip-off- $17.95 for three tacos?!?!?! Go elsewhere and pay honest prices.

Mike R.

Yelp
Ordered the chorizo breakfast burrito to go. Everything is made to order and it takes 10-15 minutes to get food. Burritos are made on a flat-top and all ingredients are chopped up together leaving the burrito interior a bit mushy with little texture of the various ingredients. Tasty, but could be better from a preparation/assembly standpoint. Huge menu of Tortas and appears very authentic. Will try this establishment again.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
I tried a taco al pastor and lengua. They were really good. I read reviews on a popular torta, so I tried one of their 20 or so choices with jalapenos. Wow! I'll be back to try others. Marinated pork, ham, cheese...mmm...mmm...good!

Rafael M.

Yelp
The best tortas in Colorado.and very good service and very nice and clean place for the family.

Yelp
We were so excited to find this hidden gem in Denver, and can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Deborah S.

Yelp
Chorizo breakfast burrito it's crispy, fabulous, a bit spicy and probably a good hangover cure
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Their breakfast burritos are always spot on! Service is friendly and delivery is pretty quick.

Yelp
First off this is a real Mexican restaurant. Not some gringo coleslaw Taco serving place. I've been here a few times food is excellent every time anything from their tortas, carne asada fries & lingua tacos. Definitely check this place out they should have a line out the door with the quality of food that they're serving but they're almost never busy. It's a new hidden gem right on the Denver Aurora border across from Walmart.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Santi who took our order was fantastic, food was fast but made fresh to order. The Taco Taliban is awesome- I highly recommend. Torta menu is huge but we came here for the breakfast burrito served until 11 am. Major props to Santi though - amazing customer service
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall. I came here with my son. The tacos and tortas were great. The service was on top of their work too.
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
I got the pollo smother burrito and it was amazing! There was so much authentic flavor and the salsa was perfect! I also got to meet the owner Francisco and he was so kind, and helped me practice my Spanish!
google avatar

SnowChik B.

Yelp
Came here on Labor Day Monday. Pleased to know they were open on the holiday. The smell coming into the door was an authentic Mexican restaurant smell. Seems like they specialize in Tortas. My husband ordered one of their special signature Tortas, he said it was delicious and very filling. The red salsa had a smoky chipotle flavor and was tasty. We ordered the chips and guac which were both made fresh. The service from the young man behind the counter was great. He let us know he was there to help with any questions about the menu or ordering. I ordered a barbacoa plate which came with rice & beans and salad garnish. The rice was really good, fluffy, not oily like some places make it. The barbacoa was very tasty and tender. The Jamaica drink was so good, not overly sweet. We would return to this little hidden spot again sometime when we're in the neighborhood! The dining area was typical of most authentic Mexican spots similar, although the lobby area looks a bit rough, the tables & bathrooms were clean. Thanks for a great meal. We will be back!
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Fantastic food made fresh in front of you. Humongous Tortas. Exceptionally friendly employees! We came two days in a row! Santi was at the front counter and served us as well. He was really energetic and explained the dishes well to us before ordering.
google avatar

Vanessa S.

Yelp
Hands down the best authentic Mexican food you can get and their customer service is amazing!!! Whether you're ordering during business hours or 20 minutes before they close, the tacos y quesadillas are fire!!!!! ¡Dios mío! ¡La comida aquí es como en casa! Y su servicio es excelente incluso si se están preparando para cerrar el restaurante. La comida es fuego!!! No mames jajaja!!!
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Great service and Excellent fresh food. All three Tortas were great. The only complaint I had was the Asada Fries could've cooked a little longer.
google avatar

Derrick G.

Yelp
I was looking for a quick bite to eat while I was driving to the airport, so I decided to stop at La Reyna Azteca Tacos & Tortas. The food is amazing. The menu is mostly in Spanish but it's easy to decipher. The menu mostly consist of tacos & tortas (sandwiches). I ordered carnitas, chorizo, al pastor, and asada tacos. All tacos were amazing. The restaurant is very affordable and the flavors are incredible. If you enjoy tacos I highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
I hate to write another review about how I really had high hopes for a certain restaurant based on the current glaring reviews but......I really had high hopes for this place based on the current glaring reviews. Here's what humbly makes me a Yelp elite reviewer: Let's start with the torta. I had the build your own asada and mushrooms torta. It's actually pretty good but I just wish the bun had more of a firm texture rather than soft and soggy. Even though the torta was tasty, I definitely have had better and less soggy. The torta is 4 stars at best. On to the tacos. They're nothing to write home about. The brisket taco is fatty and disgusting; the chicken tacos are over cooked, low quality and nothing special. That's why I had to knock this place down to a three star. In my opinion, Los Dos Portillos in Centennial and highlands ranch, and La Loma in Denver by the Brown Palace are much better places to get good mex food. Honesty is the best policy and the concept of the Internet being undefeated based on differences of opinion and truth sharing is the key! Cheers!

Beatriz M.

Yelp
Great service with even better food! I love the authenticity of the tacos and the size of the tortas! They also offer quesadillas and gorditas. But hands down the #1 item is the Quesabirras! The juiciest meat crispiest tacos and the absolute best broth in Denver to dunk them in!! Definitely one of my favorites! They also have cool hand painted murals to enjoy while waiting for your food.
