The Best Restaurants in Santa Rosa | Eater SF

"Santa Rosa’s somewhat rowdier side comes to life at downtown’s Mexican hot spot, La Rosa. The margarita menu is as long as your arm, matched by the beer and cocktail lists. Grab a seat in one of the cowhide chairs to gaze upon posters promoting Mexican wrestling matches and old Pedro Infante movies. Keen on a skinny margarita? We suggest the Cholita Linda, which swaps earthier mezcal for tequila. Big combination plates of everything from fajitas and tamales to birria and chimichangas seem designed for groups. And that’s ok because there is plenty of room inside and out for parties of all sizes." - Christina Mueller

Google
Love this Mexican restaurant. My family has been eating here for years. A nice spot for Forestville and Graton people to eat. The family who runs it is super sweet. They are very attentive and make the food quickly. I love their Veggie Burritos. Great for take-out or sitting outside during Covid. Easy available parking out front or on the side.

Google
Great food, prices, and service…if you’re passing through Forestville or on your way to a day at the river…don’t pass through without enjoying ( or grabbing to go) freshly made, absolutely delicious Mexican Food prepared just for you by Rosa and Pedro! You won’t be disappointed…

Sharla P.

Google
Rosa & Pedro (the owners) are the sweetest people and their food is outstanding. I highly recommend the crispy tacos but literally everything I've tried on the menu I've liked. Our town is so lucky to have this place!

Google
Awesome place to have lunch. I stop in everyday when im visiting the area for work. Friendly service and authentic great food.

Google
It's hardly a market, just a Mexican food order at the counter run of the mill spot, with a wall of refrigerated storage and a couple of gumball machines. I am convinced that the owners/cooks here don't ever try the food they serve, because everything I have ever gotten here is just blah, expensive as hell, blah. Borderline gross at times. In this town of one street, I guess it kinda works, but if they had ANY competition they would be sunk. I want to like this place, but the only thing they seem to be doing is raising the prices. Here's a thought, try your own food and make sure it's excellent before you expect people to pay more for it. Because frankly, I'd rather eat a wet shoe than one of your $20 burritos.

I was heading home back to Southern Sonoma County and hadn't had lunch. I decided to stop at this place and get a quick bite. You can never really go wrong with Mexican food. I thought it was kind of weird that the menu didn't have prices on it, but decided to order a vegetarian tostada which consisted of beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and some guacamole. When the cashier told me it was $16 for one tostada, I had to double check with him that I heard the price correctly. $16 for one bean tostada? Really?! I was shocked. But I was already there and starving so I just decided to pay. I understand that restaurants are struggling and I try to support local businesses. But $16 for a bean tostada? I can get a chicken tostada at my favorite Mexican place where I live for $8 (which btw I also think is a bit pricey, but again I understood the times we live in). So if small bean tostada is $16, is that going to make a carne asada burrito 🌯somewhere around $35? That would seem logical. The food was fine. Nothing amazing. And definitely not worth $16. Again,.I find it a bit odd that there are no prices on their menu. Next time I'm at a place that doesn't have prices I'll make sure to ask so I won't be shocked. But with prices like this, it's unaffordable for me to eat out.

Google
Kinda a strange place in the middle of no where. There defiantly is a pretty tense vibe here. I entered the restaurant unassumingly, and immediately felt something was off. It just doesn't feel right in there. The place was very empty on a Friday night during a holiday weekend. Like the other reviews stated, the owner mentioned some odd lines regarding covid 19. The female owner is very alert, and interested in anyone not from the area. You can tell not much ever goes on here. Her and her friend who hangs out, will have a bunch of questions that are totally unrelated to the restaurant that are quite personal that they will ask you. You will stand out if you are not an older person on a fixed income. This is really in the middle of no where. I have driven by before and noticed it mostly closed. I think this place is decent/ok. The prices are petty high and the quality is not reflected in high prices. It has a really bizarre tiered pricing system for cash or credit. You pay a few cents extra for credit like its a gas station. Strange. La Rosa Market is a slow, empty place with not a lot of business in a remote area. Its got a real back country vibe, not for the faint of heart, but the food is decent, nothing to complain about. The owner said she has some sort of meat connection through a family member, so the meat is fresh and its pretty good, but its defiantly diffrent. Tasted pretty fresh to me Overall, this place is strange and really really weird.

Google
I was looking for a place to eat and came here because of the reviews I saw online. I'm sure glad I found this place! The quesabirrias were delicious! The horchata was tasty and was homemade. The owners were very friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
Amazing locale in quaint Forestville. Best fish tacos and fresh Peruvian beans. Owner operated with a big heart and hospitality for 20+ years.

Yelp
My favorite local Mexican food spot. Always friendly, great food and easy to order online or dropping in.

Yelp
Family owned in the heart of forestville!! Very friendly couple that seem to be there all the time!! I live the carne asada quesadilla, the carnitas taco salad and the chicken plate!! They have a ton of beverages to choose from also.
google avatar

Natasha K.

Yelp
Delicious taco salad with shredded chicken Mmm that's pretty much the only thing I get here. Sub refried beans and add rice. It's just perfect! Really convenient and easy to phone in an order. Super friendly and they've been in town a long time. Just love we have a Mexican restaurant in town. I've never sat down but from the looks of it, lots of space and good for kids, so perfect for large parties. Highly recommend this place if you love fresh ingredients and great flavors!

Yelp
I'm the butthead that didn't realize they were closing soon and ordered late night... I absolutely did not mean to do that, and I felt so bad but the staff were so nice and made us some DELICIOUS burritos!!! Definitely recommend this place if you like good food, and great service
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Lovely, comfortable place with generous portions and fútbol on the TV. I usually eat four of the typical small taqueria tacos but I can only finish two of these. Everything I've tried has been full of flavor and enjoyable. The chips, sadly, are baked rather than fried, which are much healthier but don't taste as good. Friendly and locally owned.
google avatar

Yelp
Our burritos tonight were delicious !!! My son is a tough critic, and he always has impeccable taste for food and he took a bite of his carne asada regular burrito and said, "hey mom these are good burritos!" Like music to my ears and I ate up my super vegetarian burrito and loved every bite !! Now I'll be dreaming of this place til next time ! Super sweet family owned husband and wife and kindness ! Love !

Yelp
Best burrito ever!! I stop here every time I pass through Forrestville. Simple market and taqueria in downtown Forrestville. Everything I've tried here has been awesome! Today I ordered a chili relleno burrito and it was outstanding!! Whole beans, rice, guacamole and sour cream surround a batter dipped (real whole chili) stuffed with cheese and wrapped in a soft flour tortilla. It was great! The best burrito I've had in years! Super nice mom and pop operated place. Very kind and welcoming! Eat in or take out. By far the best Mexican Food around! My first choice for Mexican food in the North Bay! Wish a took a picture.
google avatar

Tamara L.

Yelp
The food is generally good, but I don't understand being charged for chips and salsa at the table when those are free at every other Mexican restaurant I've been to.

Valerie V.

Yelp
Very delicious food made by the owners of this establishment. We ate there and noticed how they had a lot of phone orders from their local clientele, and I don't blame them. The owners were very warm and friendly. So glad we stopped by.

Yelp
Rude lady up front. Food was just ok Have never gone back. Had other friends go and they said same lady rude,
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic family run business. Food is wonderful. Ambiance not so good, extremely nice people
google avatar

Yelp
Very good fresh food. The owners and workers are the sweetest people. My orders have always been delicious and fresh and done in a timely manner. My favorite place to eat in town.
google avatar

Yelp
There's really not much to say about the place other than that it's the archetypal casual Mexican place. Good food, for a good price, generous portions and a lot of variety. While this place doesn't have the more niche meats a lot of places in the city proper have, like cabeza or buche, all of their meat choices are very well-done and tasty, especially the chicken and the beef tongue. They also have good seafood fillings as well (the fish tacos are excellent), and the breakfast burritos are delicious as well. They also have, if not chips they make themselves, at least a good supplier - nice and crisp and light, not heavy and half-stale mass-produced ones. Having the ability to buy a six-pack of beer or some energy drinks at the same place I get my food is also great, and very convenient while doing the back-and-forth from work. Make sure to stop by this place if you're in the area - probably the best food in Forestville.

Yelp
Our favorite place for enchiladas. I've been going there with my granddaughter since she was born. She's 13 next month. They treat us like family. Always so kind and interested in our lives. We always feel special when we go for our favorite enchiladas. Now I take another granddaughter who is 3. We share a cheese enchilada dinner (not on the menu but they're always happy to make for us). We love the chips and salsa too. They make a hot salsa and a roasted salsa. We almost always get a bottled coke from Mexico with the cane sugar. Delicious. The restaurant is inside a convenience store in Forestville. So you can grab some groceries if need. They have many menu choices. You'll be pleased with whatever you order.

Yelp
So want the best tasting Mexican food in Forestville, Sebastopol area? This has been it for over 15 years. Low to medium ambience but such great tastes. Go here and order 2 more dishes to share and be so happy you got to taste the best of everything. Other restaurant has pottery but not the sophisticated tastes
google avatar

Ian B.

Yelp
Finally got to this family owned/operated mainstay in Forestville and it did not disappoint. Especially the made to order chunky guacamole that was more like an avocado salad. I also had the pork chili verde plate. The meat was a bit more chopped up than I like but the flavor was excellent with the fresh tortillas and beans/rice. Nice beer selection too.
google avatar

Tatianna P.

Yelp
Delicious!! We went in and ordered a steak super burrito and two bean and cheese burritos! Very sweet couple running the business. Tons of options for drinks! I was very impressed with the bathroom - extremely clean!!! 10/10 would recommend and we will be back!!

M G.

Yelp
Just came here for the first time and I will 100% be coming back. Food was delicious and served promptly. The service was fantastic and the people working there were incredibly kind. I highly recommend anyone in the Forestville area to come check this place out if you haven't already.

Daniel C.

Yelp
Oh man, I LOVE this place. Just really good old school Mexican in a casual cafeteria vibe, run by nice people ... a local treasure, so good.

Chris M.

Yelp
The owners, Pedro & Rosa, have owned this restaurant for many years. The food is authentic, and always delicious. We have eaten here at least 5-6 times in the last 6 months, and have never been disappointed. Great place for takeout as well. This is our go to place for Mexican food. It's casual, and highly recommended.
google avatar

Nikki W.

Yelp
Not terrible but not good either. The chicken burrito was too spicy for my kids but in my opinion also lacked flavor. Everything was fine but it's not somewhere I'd go again. Food was ready on time and the service was good- we had to go food.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
A true gem in downtown Forestville! I've eaten here four or five times over the past year and the food is not only genuine, but it's also incredible. I'm finally writing a review because I had lunch there today and for the first time tried their super burrito bowl. OMFG! The absolute best bowl on the planet! Great owners who put their hearts and souls into the wonderful food they serve

Lucy H.

Yelp
La Rosas is our once a week go to for yummy Mexican food. We are stuck on the vegetable bowl but the rest are delicious too with plenty of cheese and goodies. Their Horchata is refreshing. Desserts too!

Joseph H.

Yelp
Nicest folks and best food. Insane portion size and he even dropped some chips and salsa on the house. You gotta go here!

Rivkah O.

Yelp
They kind of have a s***** attitude about covid. Shrimp quesadilla is one of our favorite things to order at this place. Now, maybe not everybody cares about this but my husband and I do... THEY DO NOT DE-POOP THEIR SHRIMP. Nothing life-altering happened as a result, but that's just nasty.
google avatar

Maddy M.

Yelp
Honestly the best burrito I've ever had! Such delicious food. The staff is very nice and quick to serve. If you're hankering for some good food, go check this place out!
google avatar

Leona C.

Yelp
Came in and was ripped off about $100, no warning of service fee, said they charged "30% gratuity plus CRV on the drinks we were served at dinner, charged for an extra refil on chips for the table and treated every person in our party extremely rude. Husband was kind but I don't even think he's aware that this woman is ripping people off. The $100 gratuity forced on our bill and almost every order was wrong, people were scared to even ask for napkins she was so rude and then to top everything even though her sign says 13% DISCOUNTED for cash payment we were charged and ADDITIONAL 13%! We were also charged for additional meals of people that walked in during our party. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. Forestville is a beautiful community and I came in with my complaints explaining the laws around these things to see how we can make it right but the wife was to stubborn to budge! Reported to the BBB especially when I saw all the additional grocery taxes added to the bill... grocery tax? Ugh

Yelp
Had a quick lunch here recently, we were taking a break moving our friends into a house in Forestville. Very clean interior, wide beverage selection, friendly gentleman behind the counter taking the orders. Tacos al pastor and fish tacos were both large and tasty. Good service, clean surroundings and tasty food, can't ask for more.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
I popped in here for a quick burrito while I was working. It was about 11:30 and there was already one person in line. The woman at the register was very friendly and I ordered a Super Burrito. The entire restaurant was super clean and so was the restroom. That is always a good sign. My carne asada burrito was ready quickly and it was quite good. Their Super Burrito has rice, whole pinto beans, guacamole and sour cream inside and the meat was tasty. They give you chips and salsa with your burrito and the salsa was medium hot and homemade very good. I would definitely go back if I was in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
This is a no frills but delicious little stop in town. We wanted a bite but nothing too heavy since dinner was just around the corner. Tacos never sound like a bad idea - so we checked it out. Super clean, very open space with some scattered tables to eat inside after you order but I'm guessing most people take the food to go. Coolers along the wall to get some cold beverages, and a full menu to select from. I kept it simple with the taquitos (beef) served with chips and house made salsas. Delicious! Perfectly crunchy, the corn tortillas were nicely browned while the meat stayed succulent and flavorful without charring on the ends. Salsas were good; the roasted was my favorite. Good flavor but not a lot of heat. I can't say I would come to Forestville just for this spot, but if in town I'd certainly come again as the server/owner (?) was friendly, place is clean, prices are on point with food quality delivered. Definitely worth a gander if you want something easy, approachable, and delicious.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
Grabbed lunch here for four the other day. Ordered the taquitos, chicken enchiladas, a chicken torta and an order of nachos. They had it ready to go in not time. Got chips and salsa on the side. Fantastic! Fresh, hot and delicious. Love this market/restaurant!!
google avatar

Sheila W.

Yelp
They have the best pork, and cheese tamales, hands down. So good when fresh, and even after it's been frozen. We generally pick up a batch and put some in the freezer. Their chips, fresh guacamole and salsa is delicious too and great to share with friends. The owners and staff are friendly so it's always an inviting experience.
google avatar

Jesse R.

Yelp
Though the meat and lettuce was fresh and so was the avacado the rice was dry and beans had the texture of being canned. Beer was cold and though the name says market all that was visible was drink products.
google avatar

phil h.

Yelp
Part convenience store, part taqueria, La Rosa makes a good burrito at a fair price. The owner was super sweet and engaged us in conversation while we were waiting for our food, asking us about our day, where we went wine tasting, etc. If you're looking to fill up after a long day at the wineries, give La Rosa a shot.
google avatar

Kara A.

Yelp
Have eaten here for years when visiting my mom. Consistent. Prawn burrito is expensive, but worth the splurge sometimes!

Arron H.

Yelp
Like I said Forestville has it just slow down and get some this is bang for buck better than the taco truck, be patient or call ahead they will take care of you.
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
Our family moved to Forestville about 11 years ago, and we love Mexican food. Our go to meal is basically a veggie burrito or a rice bean and cheese burrito with some extras added. Unfortunately, we've basically given up on eating there due to their prices ($9 for a burrito), and they want to charge you more for an extra salsa when you take the food to go. It's like they do not want the business. Maybe they're tired of running the joint. I wish there was some competition for this place, even a taco truck. Usually, we just go to el patio in Santa Rosa. Another new favorite is California Taqueria!
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
No. Just no. Lovely people - terrible food. The taco salad with carnitas was a soggy mess, and the carnitas tasted like turkey. The green chili was extremely bland - not even copious amounts of salsa could save it. The worst Mexican food I've ever had and one of the worst meals of any kind.
google avatar

Aaron H.

Yelp
Rosa is as sweet as they come. The place has good food and a good location. Call ahead and your order will be waiting. This isn't a so cal spot and the prices are bit high but there isn't any place better nearby. Say hi to Rosa and enjoy a giant delicious burrito.
google avatar

Mitchell S.

Yelp
I came in here the other day to have a carne Asada burrito which was ok. Very nice man that was behind the counter. Place seemed a little run down. Went in the next day with some co workers and sat with them while they ate and a lady working there was very rude and asked if we were waiting for someone and if not we needed to leave. We also had our own drinks and she accused us of stealing them from her store. Very unprofessional and will not be going back ever.
google avatar

Branden H.

Yelp
La Rosa is a place that I ate at all the time as a teen; I grew up and went to school in Forestville. It's always been a place I've liked, and as an adult who hasn't been there in a while I decided I'd go back and give it an honest review. Conclusion - maybe it tastes better than it is because of the nostalgia, but I still love the place. The burrito is still good, very generous portions, pretty quick service, and the old dude behind the counter is just as friendly as ever. If you're in the area for any reason, definitely give it a recommendation. Good food, good prices.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Burrito was tasteless. Staff was friendly by slow. Salsa was good. Chips were okay. Would not come back unless Taco Bell goes under.
google avatar

Fredric R.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the cheese enchiladas with red sauce. I asked for chopped onion to be added and along with whole beans and rice, lunch was a pure delight! Friendly, welcoming service, made to order dishes, and Mexican Coca-Cola, what more could one ask for? All for a good value!
google avatar

Peregrine S.

Yelp
Disappointed that it's called authentic Mexican food, seems very Americanized to me but some of their dishes are amazing, I love the puerco verde and pollo , but sometimes the steak is too dry!
google avatar

L I.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this little place while in the area. No line, delicious tacos, good (n/a) beverage selection. Ample seating and ample parking + very low $ authentic food.
google avatar

Nathan M.

Yelp
Overpriced, unsanitary food practice and just plain bland Mexican food. Would recommend Guerneville's La Bodeguita or the taco truck near Safeway.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I have been going in since I moved here 2 years ago. The owners are very friendly and the food is great. This is one of my go to restaurants when I don't have time to make a meal.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
This taqueria outdoes ANY taqueria within 25 mile radius of Forestville. Super - SUUUUUUUPER - clean, fresh ingredients, refried beans and the best fresh salsas. The carne asada is almost Pancho Villa and the super quesadilla is fantastic. A side note to my previous 5 star rating: DO NOT let the owners cocky and immature son make your meal. The sweet owner makes everything 10x better than her entitled millennial son who bases the quality AND quantity of food on the size of your tip.
