Yelp
I always went to the taqueria, La Placita, up the street but figure I'd try this place since I recently read about it while looking for something new. You walk in, and you immediately notice the loud corridos, banda, and other Mexican music. Good sign. The lady let us seat ourselves and then brought us chips & salsa. The hardest part of the visit was trying to pick what we want. This was more than a taqueria and had many dishes. The menu was in Spanish & English, and there are pictures. The waitress was also quite helpful with questions that my Korean friend had. I kicked the Español, but my friend had no problems communicating with the waitress. One patron recommended we get tacos and the melon juice. To drink, I ordered horchata, and he ordered the melon juice. They came out in small pitchers with a straw. We both enjoy our drinks. He ordered a cóctel de camarón (shrimp cocktail) after I explained that Mexican style is so different than what he's had in the past. He also ordered taco with every kind of meat and tostadas. I ordered chilaquiles with fried eggs and bistec (thin steak). We both thoroughly enjoyed our food. This was his 1st time eating real Mexican food, so he didn't have anything to compare it to, but I grew up with it whether it was in different places in Mexico, California, Texas, and Illinois, specifically Chicago where Mexican food can actually be better than places in Mexico. This is now my favorite place for Mexican food in the DMV. I was so happy eating this food, the environment was what I've always experienced with the loud music, TVs with novelas & soccer, a table with happy drunks (at 11AM), and the nice people from the patrons to the wait staff. Before posting I read a lot of reviews on the bad service here, but that never entered our minds. In fact, it was the opposite. The frosting to this wonderful cake was when a mariachi band came in and started playing. I was in bliss. I loved it. I will return. Over & over.
Sidenote - It turns out that one of the patrons that I was talking to is the owner of La Placita, and his wife is the owner of this place. Way cool!
Chips - Normal-tasting. Not greasy.
Salsa - Little kick, good flavor.
Horchata - Normal flavor. Nothing special except that it's in a mini-pitcher. The drink brought a smile to my face.
Jugo fresco de melón - I'm not a fan of melon, but even I liked it.
Cóctel de camarón (shrimp cocktail) - Small order was not small. Full of shrimp, avocado, and the liquid was delicious, almost creamy. Served with saltine crackers on the side.
Tostadas - 2 in an order. I didn't try this, but it looked how they should look. Friend liked them and finished every crumb.
Tacos - The tortillas tasted handmade. We had tacos de chorizo (Mexican sausage), barbacoa (goat), lengua (tongue), al pastor (shaved beef), y bistec (steak). I like La Placita better, but that's a taqueria, and that's almost all they do, but these are still very good.
Chilaquiles - You have a choice vèrde (green) or rojo (red). You can also choose to have it plain or with chicken or steak and the option to add eggs. Mine was rojo con huevos, queso y bistec. The red sauce had some heat, though it may be much for those who cannot take spicy food well. Breaking the egg yolk, mixing it with the rest of the tortilla chips, cheese, sauce, and cutting a piece of the steak to balance everything into your mouth brought me back many years ago to the last time I had wonderful, authentic Mexican food. I sat there and enjoyed it. The steak was a little rubbery and not juicy at all. It is actually somewhat expected so I didn't mind, but to make it perfect would be a better piece of beef. I will order this dish again, but I won't get the bistec. The dish is so good that it stands on its own.
