21 Classic Restaurants In Mexico City - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"Since La Taberna del León relocated from Valle de Bravo to Mexico City in 1994, it has proven that international cuisine can be bright and sophisticated, going beyond cliché. Their Mexican family recipes—like bean soup or bite-size chicken tostadas—European dishes, and seasonal specialties stand out, enhanced by the beautiful Victorian house setting. Throughout the years, the restaurant has upheld high standards for both food and service, leaning into forgotten courtesies like complimentary slices of bread and butter at the start of the meal. If you can, sit at the bar, one of the most striking spots in the house, for a cocktail before or after your meal." - mariana camacho

A timeless classic with uncompromising excellence Taberna del León is one of those rare places where tradition, consistency, and excellence converge. Tucked inside the south of CDMX, this restaurant has operated with the highest standards since day one—and has never wavered. The food is exquisite—elegant yet comforting, rooted in classic flavors but elevated with finesse. Every dish feels intentional, from the perfect seasoning to the thoughtful presentation. The service is just as remarkable: warm, attentive, and discreet, a true reflection of hospitality done right. It’s astonishing that this gem remains slightly under the radar considering it belongs to one of Mexico’s most renowned culinary groups. It may not have the flash of some newer spots, but don’t let that fool you—Taberna del León is a masterclass in consistency and culinary rigor. A true jewel in the crown of its celebrated chef, and a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic, elevated dining experience in the city.

Great place for food, the service is excellent. The ambiance is like an old spot, don’t expect a party or younger ambiance; go with your parents. But definitely worth to try the food. - Mexican food - Seafood is a great option.

First off, please know that the moment you walk into this restaurant, you will be taken with the historical architecture. The place is simply beautiful. We were seated and immediately catered to by the staff. All of the food was outstanding, but the entrees were out of this world. This is one of those “destination” restaurants that you remember for just how good it is. It made for a truly lovely evening.

A remarkable cuisine experience from start to end. From appetizers to dessert, La Taberna del León offered a magnifficent variety of european flavors that left us speechless. Choice of Ribera del Duero wines was exceptional.

Excellent food and kind staff. One of the best gourmet restaurants in the south of the city. I gave 4 stars because I didn't liked that the mural paintings were covered recently. The place lost some of it's atmosphere.

Classy and familiar restaurant in the southern part of the city. Besides its amazing food, service provided from staff members is extraordinary. They were always careful, educated and attentive to our requests, you don't even need to turn around to search for a waiter because they were always one step ahead to help you. What an amazing time we had during lunch time eating homemade bread, clams, oysters, shrimp and duck tacos, crab and tuna tostadas and filet mignon. I'm looking forward to eating there soon again! Thank you Taberna del León!

Yelp
Old style service with excellent service and great food. Had shrimp pozole, it was fenomenal. Had it late in the evening and was able to sleep well. Great balance of flavor ands pieces. The following week, went for a second visit. I had the pork chop with brusell sprouts and a terrific sauce of pepper and mustards. Combination of flavors was terrific.?Unfortunately, the chop was overcooked to the point of rubbery texture and dry as a piece of meat can be. The breads are off this world!

Yelp
Excelente comida, maravilloso servicio. Desde la ensalada con queso Camembert hasta la crema de calabaza con castañas. El foie gras Digno de recordarse. Terminamos con un pastel de chocolate con un helado de frambuesa memorable. Un muy buen restaurante. Recomendable.
