The 26 Best Restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico

"Beer bar Lúpulo is always blasting the best playlist and serving a wide array of beers on draft as well as in bottles and cans. Focus your drinking efforts on local breweries, such as those from Boxlab in Aguadilla on the island’s west coast or Zurc Brauhaus in Coamo. Everything pairs well with the selection of bar food, including some truly wonderful french fries, wings, and an excellent Cubano." - Paulina Salach Antonetti, Alicia Kennedy

15 Best Bars in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"La Taberna Lúpulo is a gorgeous Old San Juan tavern with soaring beamed ceilings, big oak doors flung open to the street, and a long wooden bar. When you think about drinks in Puerto Rico, you don't immediately think beer bar, but from the moment you walk in, it's clear that's what this spot is about: Shelves of bottles line the walls, the bar boasts a whopping 50 taps, and there's a huge chalkboard scribbled with the bartenders' favorites." - Kris Fordham

Google
Some of the best beer for this popular area. Lots of choices of styles and brewery locations. They had a great selection of liquor, especially the randomly placed rum bottles. Their prices for liquor were all over the place, some bottles should have been higher while others probably lower. Staff were friendly and showed great attentiveness. Overall I was quite happy to find this place as it was a great place to relax and sip on a tasty beverage after walking around.

Google
We had some snacks and beer at this place. The drinks were nice, and the beer was actually pretty good. However, the food was disappointing. The fish inside the taco was burnt, yet they still served it — which was quite frustrating. Despite the friendly staff and decent drinks, I wouldn’t recommend this place. The snacks were below average, and overall, it felt like a waste of time.

Google
La Taberna Lupulo is a great taphouse and restaurant in Old Town. They have a full bar, and nearly 50 beers on tap, with options not listed on the website. Roughly 1/2 their beers are local and with this many taps, they cover most styles. Their menu is not huge but what they make is really good. The atmosphere is great, it's big, open, and has the classic spanish old town feel. Service is friendly though the music can be a little loud. This is a spot I would stop at again.

Google
The best part about this experience was the food. The Questo Frito was sooo yummy! We inhaled it (did not photograph). The cheese was so good on its own, but adding the guava sauce? Incredible. The Burger Sliders were really good too! A lot of flavor on those smaller bites (it comes with 4 sliders, a good portion)! The fish tacos were pretty good too. The fish were pretty battered but the taste was fresh! The poorer parts of this experience was how long it took for the food. The bar had less than 10 people inside when we ordered and it took well over 30mins for our food to arrive. The music was terrible inside, loud and messy. Our server was kind though and we thought he did well. Bathrooms were good, they had soap and overall were pretty clean.

La Taberna Lupelo was my favorite spot on our first trip through Puerto Rico. The feel is like a small hometown tavern in the historical.district. It was so awesome, chill with a comfortable vibe and good music and bartenders. Lupelo is awesome!!!

Google
If you are in old San Juan and are looking for some local Puerto Rican craft beer. I would recommend checking this place out. We had great service and the food was good as well. My wife and I had the Cuban sandwich and Fish Tacos. Both were very good. We were only in town for the day and were looking to try some Puerto Rican craft beer and lucked out with this place.

Google
Great spot on the North end of Old San Juan. The service and atmosphere was lovely. Split the Cubano which was a delicious offering. Loaded with meat was MORE than enough for 2. Open air seating. Large selection of beer options from PR and all over. I enjoyed the fries but they are double fried and are very greasy.

Yelp
I had a great experience here. The staff was super nice. I asked for two rum cocktails of their choice and both times the cocktails were fire. Usually I don't expect much from bar food, but all the food was great. Queso Frito was my favorite. My spouse got fried chicken sandwich and it was great. They also had homemade fries which were also great. For non-alcoholic drinks, my spouse got a lemonade and it was also yummy.

Yelp
We came by here for a drink before dinner. It's a local, dive bar with a large selection of beer on tap. There's plenty of local options to choose from where you can get a flight to try multiple. I ordered the La Patria Colada ($9.99) and got the Queso Frito ($7.99) to snack on. Their take on the pina colada was delicious --creamy, yet refreshing. We also really loved the queso frito, which are little fried cubes of cheese paired with guava sauce. It's my first time having this dish and it's such a great combo!

Yelp
Wanted to find some good craft beers for hophead DH and this place didn't disappoint. With over 30 different beers on tap along with various options for beer cocktails ... there's something for everyone. Super friendly and helpful bartenders with a nice atmosphere to just sit at the bar ... what could be better!

Yelp
Great spot! A great selection of craft beers! Friendly staff! Definitely a place for beer. Lots of bar seating and some tables.. just a good spot to try some local beers!

Yelp
Sick little spot in Viejo San Juan! When we went, we ordered different beer flights because they had a plethora of choices for different kinds of beers to choose from. I didn't end up getting a flight (I got the Patria Light, which was pretty good for me as a person who doesn't drink beer like that) but my friend, a true beer connoisseur, indulged in a flight and was able to try different beers. Overall, cool spot to get your beer fix in and try the many different kinds they have to offer. They also sell food here (just bar food, nothing crazy) if you need to snack on something as you sip away! Tip--Bathrooms are in the back outside as single stalls

Yelp
Great spot to have a drink and get something to eat. Great location, good service. Diverse selection of local beers. You know the food is good when staff from other local places are going here to eat. Ambiance varies depending on the time of day.

Yelp
After spending the night out in old San Juan we decided to make this our last stop, grab one more drink and snack for the road. To my surprise they had a huge selection of whiskey and bourbon (for the island)! In an area known for rum, you might not realize how rare this is - even more shocking was finding an allocated bottle of bourbon. Our bartender gave us a very generous pour since the bottle was done after that. She and everyone else working behind the bar were very nice. I ordered fries to go and although they weren't anything special and took a while, they hit the spot and were just what we needed for the Uber ride home. I would pop in again to see what bourbon they have in the future. Nice little spot!

Yelp
Place has got a good selection of beer. No AC though! Which was ok with me but be forewarned that you may sit here and really feel the heat. Not a dive bar btw, some others have described it as such. Just a friendly local bar that's in Old San Juan! Bartender was really cool and recommended to me some great beers and then recommended another brewery in Aguadilla! I went and that was cool.

Yelp
Stopped by this spot before heading in on a Saturday night at 2 in the morning & it was a great spot to people watch. I met some nice folks there and we stayed & chatted for hours. I only had Chicken Wings but they were good and safe. But I wish I had tried a different flavor than HOT. I'm not much of a beer woman but they had lots on tap.
google avatar

Jada H.

Yelp
People at this spot seemed to really be enjoying themselves when I went on a Saturday night. It wasn't too crowded and the music was mostly fun throw backs of American pop music. I ordered a few rum punches and they didn't give me a buzz but were tasty. I would try something on tap next time.

Yelp
Great selection of beers from around the world. 40+ beers! Best of all they had plenty of amazing local cervezas. I had a mind blowing golden stout from REBLucion and my boo loved her lager. Lots of IPAs and I even saw a sour. They have a full bar with plenty of top shelf options and we saw folks enjoying cocktails. With fun music pumping and a nicely mixed crowd anyone can have a good time here. Food options are plentiful. Our server recommended the Cubano sandwich and the queso frito. We went with the cheese. Fried and cubed with a tangy sauce. We were happy. We were seated by the kitchen and noticed that the fries and wings also looked good.

Yelp
Great cool beer tavern with full bar and frozen margaritas. Very good fair priced delicious food. Has outdoor space in the back. Great selection of beers and friendly staff. Food came quick!

Yelp
The Crunchwrap with pork was fantastic. Chips and salsa was great as well. The Crunchwrap is pretty big and honestly could be split with someone else. The staff was super friendly and it was a great spot. 5/5 recommend going here for lunch.

Yelp
We were hot, tired and hungry and the yelp reviews brought us to this refreshing spot in Viejo San Juan. First, I loved the music. Ordered the Falafel which was very yummy. And we don't drink liquor but the lime juice was exquisite. Sat there for a very long time enjoying the music, the cool breeze and people watching. The wait staff was attentive and gave us a lot of ice. Love Love Love this place

Yelp
Amazing. One of the best craft beer selections of any bar in San Juan, plus good music, good atmosphere, plenty of seats, and even above average food. Fries, queso frito, sliders, fish tacos, all hit. Don't miss this place!

Yelp
Nothing beats good beer and La Taberna Lúpulo is the best spot to find good beer. They have a nice selection on draft, as well as bottled and canned. You'll find a variety of craft brews, local and imported. I recommend checking out the local ones. Several local breweries are very small and don't have taprooms and/or are located outside of San Juan, so it's nice that you can find many of those beers here. I decided to go with a Hazy IPA from BoxLab Brewing. They are based in Aguadilla (west) and have a taproom (Beer Box). I followed it up with their Pale Ale. Now I want to visit the Beer Box to try more. My wife tried one from Dragonstone Abbey (Rio Grande) that was made with guanabaná (soursop). Get past the funky aroma and it was tasty. In addition to beers, they also serve food starting at 11am. We stopped here with some friends for lunch on a Sunday around noonish. For the kids we ordered the Bigote Chicken Sandwich. It's a fried chicken sandwich that comes with slaw and pickles, but we got it plain for the kids. They loved it. I got a bite in and it was nice and juicy (they use thigh meat instead of breast meat). For the adults we ordered the Tripleta Burger Sliders. One order has 4 sliders. We each took one. We also went with buffalo chicken wings and their fresh cut fries. All were hits, but the sliders and fries really stood out. Note that fries are separate, they are not included with the sandwiches or burgers. They are worth getting. Service was slow at first but picked up. Keep in mind that the servers are also the bartenders, or at least they were that day. Paola and Mariano did a good job. They were friendly, very knowledgeable, and helpful providing suggestions. It's enough to say that this place is a must stop in Old San Juan.

Yelp
Wouldn't recommend this place, especially if you're a tourist. We seemed unwanted from the second we walked in. Nobody told us where to sit so we eventually just picked a table. Waited a while for a server. We ordered an appetizer which arrived quickly, and then never had a server come back to our table again. We sat there for a good half hour waiting to order our meals and nobody came. They walked past us multiple times, making eye contact, and never said a word. We eventually had to approach one of the servers ourselves to ask for the check and left after just an appetizer. Really bad customer service. It wasn't all that busy either.

Yelp
Ambiance was nice. Open concept dive bar on a corner with all the doors and windows open. We hopped in for a seat at the bar. The beer was yummy. They had all varieties. The rum old fashion was the best I've had. The food was good too.

Yelp
After a long walk through Old San Juan, had a little bit of thirst and saw La Taberna Lupulo Open. I had never been to this place but it looked inviting and a good spot for a short break. Walked in and sat at the bar and ordered one of the many beers they have on tap. The bar stools are not the most comfortable to me, but when you are tired and thirsty, they will do. The beer I ordered was great, cold, and refreshing, and the bartender was friendly. Although I did not try (because I was not hungry), I observed folks working hard in the kitchen and bringing food out to other patrons - the food looked good. Next time I am around, will visit and explore further.
google avatar

Brian E.

Yelp
Didn't end up eating, waiting 15 minutes before we were even seated, once seated, no one came to take our order so we bounced.
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
What a great Puerto Rican bar and food spot. Open on Sundays! Playing some great music ( classic rock inspired) see photos of the food. Good flavor with shareable portions. I'm not a beer lover but the colada with coconut stout float is delightful and refreshing.. servers and bartenders are prompt and friendly.. hip, upbeat and highly recommended..if you're around old San Juan
google avatar

George D.

Yelp
Went here as a part of a Historic Tour of Old San Juan. It was one of 5 places we stopped. They gave us a small Cuban sandwich as a part of our visit. It could be the best Cuban sandwich I have ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! This place is great. My only complaint would be they need ac, but nowhere in PR do they have that. So we brought a family of 7. The 12 year old got bbq wings...delicious! Someone also ordered the buffalo wings and also delicious, but what took the cake for wings was the SPICY GUAVA WINGS! They were amazing!!! Best wing flavor I have tasted! I got the Crunchwrap (chicken) it was huge and delicious! We also got the chips and salsa and it was great! A little spicy but I love that! Last, we got the fried cheese! The server said it was a very Puerto Rican thing to get. So we did and they were amazing! The beers were great and they will let you taste them to see what you want. I went with the BOB, orange flavored. Not for everyone and I usually don't like beer with a fruit taste, but I loved it. My dad got the 873 ipa. It was amazing. So in the whole, the food and beer was amazing and the service was top notch and fast!!! I would go here many times if I was here longer!

Yelp
Was walking down the street in Old San Juan when I stumbled upon this place. It caught mine and my boyfriends eyes and we decided to pop in. Grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered some drinks. My boyfriend got some beer and I got a beer flight. There is a ton of beers to choose from. They provide you with chalk for your flight board and you wrote the numbers of the beers you want. I enjoyed them all. We also ordered salads and chips - it was delicious. The music inside was fun and provided a good atmosphere to be in. Enjoyed it!
google avatar

Alyssa G.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch and enjoyed the shade, vibe, food, beer, quick service and good company! It's a cool little spot with lots of local beers, which one of the guys there helped us pick out what we'd like best. I really loved the BOB by Ocean Lab Brewing and we got a fried chicken sandwich and crunch wrap. Both were really good and filling. We chatted with Matt the head Intoxicator for a good bit and learned more about the building and area. We'll be back for sure and would recommend to anyone for a casual lunch & beer!

Harry M.

Yelp
Great spot for us old heads to sit back and watch the young crowd walk Around. Bar staff was excellent. They worked very hard even when some kids came in and made mess in the banio area.
google avatar

Gleicyane G.

Yelp
One of the best bars in Old San Juan, maybe the best. They have a nice selection of beers on draft and also in cans and bottles. They even have a couple non-alcoholic craft beers. The food is also very good, especially the tripleta sliders and the fries.
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
Great food although limited menu. You have to try the Cuban sandwich; awesome beer selection. They'll let you try a little taste before committing to a larger serving. Also, they have samplers of 4-5 small glasses so that you can try it out. Young female bartender, pretty rude, but the others were more accommodating and explained that if you sit at the tables, you basically have to go up to the bar to get service. Music selection was pretty good too.
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
Best cuban sandwich ever. Pernip was seasoned perfectly and the homemade mustard with rum was incredible.

Larry H.

Yelp
This was a great find in Old San Juan. Great selection, great service. Got something to go and continued on to lunch.

Yelp
Great beer list with lots of local options and you can get a flight if you have a hard time deciding. Good food, friendly service, lots of Insta-worthy photo ops.

Yelp
A beer lover's paradise in San Juan. If you really appreciate nice beers, then this place should be on your list . . . unless the line for entry is super long. Fortunately for us, we visited on an easy, breezy Monday and waited for about 10 minutes. While I enjoyed my experience at La Taberna, I have to say that the female bouncer needed to take a chill pill. Before entering the bar, she randomly started screaming at us - NO RUM; NO HEINEKEN; NO COCKTAILS. UM. . .thanks, lady. Here's the funny thing. Upon entering La Taberna, I saw a bar full of various liquors. Also, the menu has various regular and beer-based cocktails. I'm not sure what the bouncer was talking about unless she did not want non-Puerto Ricans to hang out at La Taberna. Intense bouncer lady aside, we had a nice experience trying out a few drafts. Boy does La Taberna has a HUGE selection of beers, so there's a little bit of something for everyone. Unlike many other places in the area, the service was pretty on point, and we were not left waiting for an extended period of time for refills.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible selection of beers. Fish tacos were amazing as were the wings. Highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
Get the Cubano and shut up. Unreal flavor , I don't even fw mustard and pickles but everything together just hit. Make sure to wear a bib this thang is juicy. Mi gente!

Yelp
We came for a late night dinner and drinks. This is a fun bar in a lively street in northern OSJ that is populated with other bars. There is plenty of seeing at the bar and at individual tables. They have a wide variety of beers, including local beers. We got a flight of beer and some food. The fish tacos (set of 2) were made of a substantial amount of fish, and they did not skimp on the toppings (shredded cabbage, not a slaw). The spicy Mayo on top was the best part of it. We also got the tripleta sliders- not the most unique dish but definitely still delicious. Overall, for bar food, it was pretty good! All good came out hot and freshly made.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
What at first seems like a run of the mill bar actually had one of the best Cuban sandwiches I've ever had. Not to mention their fantastic Beermosa. Also, it's just a great vibe that complements its surroundings in Old San Juan.
google avatar

Meghna S.

Yelp
Super cute bar...that 90s look and amazing service by both the bar tenders. We fell in love with the cool vibe and fun crowd. We ordered some beer and appetizers and just blended with the groove of the place. Queso fritos were soft and well made. Felafel sliders made for the perfect bar food. This is the kind of amazing bar snacks that should be available in most bars in New York too. Highly recommend this place for a casual stroll in on a warm afternoon for some chilled beer and amazing apps.
google avatar

Vanessa A.

Yelp
This place was so good!! Nice little brewery in Old San Juan. They have drinks and food!! We had their house beer which tasted like medalla light so it was great. The hubs had the chorizo and beef sliders which he fell in love with and I had their fish tacos. Would have preferred them to be in corn instead of flour tortillas, but nonetheless they were good. We bought some souvenirs shot glasses to take back home, which will be a good keepsake memory.
google avatar

Cristina R.

Yelp
We had lunch in the interior patio to be as COVID-friendly as possible. There are tons of beer options, and our server brought us some samples based on what we said we liked. I got a Saison from a brewery in Carolina, PR - yum! For food, they have great takes on bar/fast food classics like a Crunchwrap Burrito, fish tacos (which were spicier than expected), tripleta sliders (on a sweet Hawaiian roll mmm), and the queso frito with DELISH guava IPA sauce. The food was better than expected and paired really nicely with our drinks. Overall a great place to rest and recharge while walking around VSJ!

M H.

Yelp
A gem. Many Puerto Rican beers. The staff know their stuff. Not too loud. Large selection.
google avatar

Ben A.

Yelp
In old San Juan stands a bar with a huge variety of drinks. What we can for was a meal to eat and not a single dish disappointed. I recommend the shishito peppers and the Cuban. Food came quickly and service was lovely. This is the place to eat.
google avatar

Olivia P.

Yelp
We came upon this tavern while waiting for our table to be ready at another restaurant in Old San Juan. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby but we chose this one because of the music, open-air seating, and large drink selection. The place was busy but not packed and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, including the staff. It's a fun party vibe and I would definitely come back next time we're in OSJ!

Jose O.

Yelp
I felt in dangered the manager not only threatened life and pulled my phone off my hand and became confrontational and aggressive , forced his staff to make us feel unwelcomed. Don't go here very homophobic and unsafe!
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
Truest gem in Puerto Rico. That is a microbrewery that can cook. This is non touristy, and a great place for a brew. Now the food is just simple and excellent. It's also plated like a million bucks.
google avatar

Georgina S.

Yelp
Excelent beer ! Beautiful place! Great service ! I order beer my kid order jugo parcha so yummy We will be back Nice place Nice atmosphere. Joe was a great server !
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cool tavern spot in OSJ! Fairly priced and descent service! There is a wide selection of beers to choose from and the food menu had a very nice variety as well

Yelp
Swung in for a beer and chips/salsa. We also got the the queso, which came with a ipa/caramel sauce, it was so good! Fantastic beer options and great service.

Yelp
La Taberna Lúpulo was a happy place for my boyfriend and I when we were visiting Old San Juan. Our first visit was on a Spoon Food Tour. We learned about the history of the bar and tried some of their delicious beers and the cuban sandwich. Once the tour was finished, we immediately went back to La Taberna Lúpulo for another Cuban and some more beer! The service at the bar was not as outwardly friendly as we had experienced elsewhere in Old San Juan, but it wasn't unkind either. We really enjoyed the small beer garden area in the back, and the big open windows around the main bar. If you're in the area, La Taberna Lúpulo is a must!
google avatar

Carrie P.

Yelp
Our favorite place to grab a beer. So many beers on tap choose from, reasonable prices and great bar food. Tried the chips and salsa, Crunchwrap supreme and their fried cheese! All delicious. This was by far the best place to chill.
