Had to try the menudo after an online recommendation. Warm, spicy broth with lots of tripe. Zero hominy but added a can I had. Ask for extra jalapeno/onion/cilantro, very skimpy amount for a large order.

Google
I didn't try any meals but the chelada was so cold and delicious. Definitely going back for another one. Service was odd, the lady looked upset or something. It made me feel uncomfortable but I decided to ignore it. Place looked clean and comfortable.

Jamie Dugan

Google
Very decent tex mex. Really good emchilada plate. Chips are store style like tostitos but taste good. Salsa was very good. Small restaurant atmosphere reminds me of places ive been in mexico.

Google
Food is amazing! Affordable! Fast service. I recommend this place.

Google
I get this Togo all the time and every time I do I’m NOT disappointed!!! GOTTA !!! Get the fajitas condo with shrimp!! Best flavors around and will definitely fill you up. I love this place!!!!

I stumbled upon this delightful hidden gem while waiting for my car to be serviced. The restaurant serves authentic Mexican cuisine, and I tried the chorizo and egg dish paired with a side of potatoes—it was absolutely delicious! The prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are generous. Plus, they offer taco specials in the morning, which is a nice bonus!

Google
This is a little diamond in the rough. The Mexican shrimp cocktail is the best in the area and a reasonable price. It's a working man's restaurant. It's truly a authentic restaurant. The ladies are nice. I haven't tried the other items but the restaurant has a bunch of take out orders.

Google
Fantastic food and the waitress was amazing. I just wasn’t sure if I should seat myself or not. No biggie, the beef enchiladas had so much flavor!

Yelp
We went on Sunday for breakfast and had a good meal. For $10, you get 2 eggs, 4 bacon, refried beans, potatoes and 4 corn tortillas. It was very filling and the service was prompt. The restaurant is clean. It's a fairly authentic atmosphere and the music from the kitchen was jamming! Local Mexican restaurants like this are really experiencing a loss of business as some of their regular customers are afraid to be out in public. So it's up to the rest of us to open our wallets, eat out regularly and keep these treasures in business!!!

Yelp
My daughter and I wanted a quick lunch, and decided to try this chain restaurant because it was nearby and we'd never been. It was just before noon and we noticed that the parking lot was pretty empty, so figured we could get a quick meal. By the time we left, the lot was pretty full! When we went in, we were told if we didn't want carryout we should sit down anywhere. Our waitperson immediately brought chips, salsa, and charro beans... but realized our table wasn't pristine so took care of that before putting everything down and taking drink orders. She returned later for food orders. The chips were very good, the salsa good but a bit on the spicy side for us. The restaurant filled up with people quickly, and we noticed more waitstaff. We also noticed that we were among very few gringos in the place... which we regarded as a good sign. Our orders of avocado tostada (from the appetizer menu) and carne asada mini-tacos arrived in a reasonable time. For the price, I was surprised by the quantity and quality of the food. My tostada had at least one whole, ripe avocado and my daughter's tacos were loaded with tender meat. A check wasn't delivered to our table, so we went to the counter to pay. While the atmosphere in this restaurant is rather basic, we were pleased with our food and service and would return. I wish I'd taken photos!

Yelp
Breakfast tacos, tortas, green salsa, horchata. Yum!!! Breakfast tacos: Great deal! I like there bacon and eggs, eggs and nopales (cactus). I like them on flour tortillas, but you can choose corn as well. Torta is goodddd. Al pastor, barbacoa, or tongue, they are all good options. It comes with lettuce, tomatoes, and big slices of acocado. Horchata is HUGE!! It shows on the menu that there are 2 sizes, but they actually only have the big size. And it's YUMMY. Not too sweet, not too vanilla-y Vibe: it's more on the you come, get your good food, eat, then leave kinda vibe. There was one time later in the evening, there were still customers, but they started to get the mop and fabuluso out and start mopping the floor lol. So don't expect much, come for the food only. *Free chips only available later in the day for lunch and dinner. Comes with red salsa and beans

Yelp
My Fiancé and I were looking for a late dinner spot and we decided on Mexican. We stumbled upon this gem in North West Austin. This place offers authentic Mexican food without all the frills. We arrived at 8:45pm and they close at 10pm on a Tuesday night. The service was excellent. The restaurant has a family style ambiance. The food was so delicious and the portions sizes are very generous. We started with Micheladas. We got a 4 tacos. Split lengua and asada. When I say I was blown away by the taste it's an understatement. Also light on the pockets so that was a bonus. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We started the night with mango margarita with chamoy. It's in a nice big margatita glass. It looked good and you could taste that it was made with plenty of mangoes. I ordered queso quesadilla with asada. It came with guacamole and sour cream. The meat had good flavor but wished it was more tender. My husband got the especial burrito, and it came with rice and beans on the side. He didn't like the cheese sauce on it because it reminded him of fake craft cheese. Overall, the food tasted good, and we were so full.

Yelp
These are (in my opinion) the best Huevos Rancheros in Austin. Atmosphere is super festive as well.

Yelp
We've used La Tapatia as the starting point for car club runs twice in the last year. One of our members actually eats breakfast daily here when he's in town. I'd actually be interest to know the history of the building; digs are quite small for the amount of business this restaurant does. Parking is ample! For our recent visit we snagged a large table and then commandeered an adjacent one so we all could sit and visit. Everything from just coffee to tacos were ordered. GF had her migas which she liked last time. Except, it seemed the portion had doubled in size since the last visit. It could have fed the entire table. My sauce choice for years when dining Tex-Mex has been Ranchero and I've been experimenting in 2022 modifying Matt Martinez's recipe. I never knew the importance of chicken stock in these recipes! So, Huevos Rancheros for me with cactus and cheese (gotta make it my own). Beans were alright; taters were not seasoned. Nopal, egg, and ranchero combo proved good bites. I ate more than I expected knowing we were heading towards a meat coma in Llano, Texas. BTW when they say ham (jamon) they mean the tiniest slice of cheap cold cuts. Aside from minor criticism we came, occupied, and headed out in an orderly fashion for our Hill Country cruise. Service was friendly and adaptive to our needs quickly. Food comes out lightning quick; it's up to you to eat the whole plate or pace yourself for your next adventure. I still ate it all and had BBQ afterwards!

Yelp
Stopped by here to have a late lunch/early dinner with the Husband. There were not that many customers there when we arrived so we were seated quickly. We were brought out menus and some Chips and Salsa. The chips were fresh and the salsa ok. The older waitress comes out to get our order, and she doesn't look happy lol. I am not sure what was going on but that scowl! After our food arrived - in a timely manner - we both dug in as we were both hungry. We were thankful for the quantity of food and began enjoying the quality. We ordered: Carne Guisada Torta - My hubby is a big fan of Carne Guisada but not when it has too much gravy so he was pleasantly surprised when his Torta came out to him with the Carne Guisada having the perfect amount of gravy to meat ratio. He said the bread was fresh and so were the veggies. The Torta was huge and very filling. Cheese Enchiladas with Green Sauce - Pretty straight forward Tex Mex meal. The green sauce was tangy and delicious. The cheese is the white cheese and it was warm and melty. The rice and beans were ok. All in all a good meal. This restaurant was clean and we saw other patrons with smiles on their faces from their friendly wait staff, unfortunately our waitress was just having a bad day I think. The food is good here, nothing to write home about - but good none the less. If you haven't been here before, try it out and see for yourself how you like it. We will probably be back.

Yelp
I love this Mexican restaurant, I come here for the fajitas, I'm petty sure they know me already, customer service is great, everyone is super nice, food is great.

Pui S.

Yelp
I ordered cheese enchiladas and a crispy beef taco. Enchiladas weren't cooked, the cheese was cold and solid. The taco shell was stale, like it was made yesterday. Waited for 15 minutes, but waitress disappeared. It was 1:45pm and the place wasn't busy. Wound up paying and leaving. Save your money

Alexander P.

Yelp
The food is only partially Americanized and the dining room makes you feel like you could be somewhere in Mexico. Mediocre and a bit pricey for what it is.
google avatar

Macias S.

Yelp
Ordered Togo for lunch on my break. Specially asked for no onions ONLY cilantro. Looks like if anything they put extra onions on it. Not ordering here again.

Yelp
Bean and cheese nacho plate with ground meat added was fantastic! Huge portion! Ate about 1/3 and made 3 more more " reasonable size" meals with take home. Salsa was good and they gave a bowl of beans, wow! Sooo good! Wait staff were very friendly. The place smells so good! My friend had a taco salad, huge taco bowl with plenty of ground meat, sooo good! Will be back for more!

Dani R.

Yelp
the food was okay. service was horrendous. came in at 12:00, served me at 12:50. not coming back. dont go unless you want wait more than expected.

Yelp
Ok if you like a quick, affordable meal. The service was friendly and quick. When served, the food was hot. Nice neighborhood restaurant - not crowded at all on an evening hour. I had three beef tacos - decent - but a bit chewy and dry - end of day? Maybe better at lunch time...

Yelp
I have not been to La Tapatia since before the pandemic and had a craving. I still don't eat inside restaurants, so I went there to get some food to go. Found out they had a makeshift drive-through window. So this made it even easier! I ordered two meals to go. One 1) TexMex plate with ground beef taco, chalupa, cheese enchilada, rice and beans. It's a lot of good and can easily be stretched into two meals. It's a lot of delicious food. 2) Enchiladas Tapatia-delicious ground beef enchiladas covered in queso and served with rice and beans. Very generous portion of food. I had to do some more shopping, so these two meals sat in my car for a couple of hours. The photos didn't look so great, but once plated and heated they were delicious! Yummmm!

Yelp
La Tapatia is what some would label a 'hole in the wall'. Just off Hwy 183 and Anderson Mills, this spot is no frills and easy to get to. Food: Breakfast plates are generous with portions. The eggs and bacon comes with three eggs (choice of scrambled, over easy, etc.), three slices of perfectly cooked bacon, potatoes, and refried beans. Chicken enchiladas were delicious, with a tomatillo sauce, served with rice and beans, and shredded lettuce. Their red salsa is spot on with heat and flavor. Service: Decent table service, though you may need to wave for a refill now and then, particularly when they are busy. Cost: Two meals, two drinks usually run us about $17 after tax. You really can't beat that. Overall: This place is a dive, and food prices are cheap, so let that set your expectations. Parking is plenty, they take cards (though there's a small surcharge to do so), and food is pretty consistent each time we've been.

Yelp
When you walk in, you can smell the freshness. The waitstaff is nice and polite. The food is really good.

Yelp
Amazing food of authentic mexican, we come here often and really happy with the quality of the service

Yelp
This is our go to spot! The 2 meat platter is amazing. Salsas are always fresh and delicious. Friendly staff.

Amanda G.

Yelp
I've been eating here for 6 yrs. I've dealt with the rude ass manager and my card being charged 3x and still I go back. Not after today. My mother, my daughter and my son went in for lunch today. As my daughter started to eat her food she was about 1/3 way through her plate she found a COCKROACH in her beans!!!!! I wanted to scream and she wanted to throw up. I informed my waitress showed her the plate told her I wasn't paying for anything and left!!! Never again. And from what I've read this isn't the first time!!!!

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but I was a little disappointed. Paid for a to go order and got the shrimp cocktail and menudo. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail was so tough. Like a brick which sucks because the sauce flavor was good but because of the shrimp it was inedible. Menudo broth lacked flavor however the tripe was cooked well. I would've returned the shrimp cocktail but I live 15 mins away and honestly it wasn't worth it to drive back. From the other complaints I've seen in their reviews it seems as if they just don't care anymore. Gave 2 stars instead of one for the cocktail sauce. Better luck next time.

Yelp
We Found our new favorite Mexican restaurant! We love the crispy tacos beans and rice plate. Great service and the chips and salsa are fresh.

Yelp
Review of 183. Delicious food. Terrible service. I tipped but gave it to the Lupe (the one pleasant server) and the kitchen staff for my favorite bowl of tortilla soup.

Melissa A.

Yelp
This place is so horrible. Staff unfriendly they always get my order wrong whether it's a doordash order or dine in. I have given this place so many opportunities but this will be my last time giving them my business. Food is garbage. Service is worse than trash. Ladies up front must really hate their job because they provide not an announce of customer service. Go to this place if you have zero standards. Food portions are big but why want big food portions when the food taste like caca.

Yelp
This place is my go to for fast Mexican food. The service is great and they also have a drive thru. They have delicious frozen margaritas and mouth watering micheladas. Their menu has a great selection of Mexican food from tacos to gorditas.

Yelp
Pretty good spot for tacos are bigger than other tacos consistent and reliable. Al Pastor Tacos are great!

Yelp
I've been frequenting this restaurant for years . I've never had a issue with any of their service . Food is good , service is quick and waiters are polite .

Arleen D.

Yelp
Delicious, affordable and HUGE servings. We loved this place, found it randomly and didnt regret stopping! For 30 bucks we had two margs and the huge parrillada plate. We were full!
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
We love this place for grabbing quick, yummy Jalisco style Mexican food. Certainly nothing fancy about it and that is one reason we love it. The migas plate is enough for about 3 meals - it's an amazing value. The breakfast tacos, nachos and flautas are all good too. Posting photos since they have updated and greatly expanded their menu fairly recently.

Yelp
Just left from this place! Horrible went to have lunch with my family and I ordered sea food, when I was half way through my soup my wife ask if a would share with her and when started to look food clams she found a Cockroach in there I was so disgusted!!!never going there again!!!

Yelp
I This place has always been my go to for good & priced right Tex Mex. Always been consistent. I love their fajita nachos. Normally you get strips of fajita that are grilled & have a smoky flavor to them. Not today. I ordered them & i got something all chopped up. I asked if they gave me ground beef by accident but the new waitress said it was fajita. It had no grill flavor. Tastes like boiled chopped roast. Had no flavor at all. Very disappointed in this visit. I give it 3 stars as my many visits before today was good.

Yelp
My husband has been eating here for 10 years and today he decided to take us out for a treat.. We ordered our food and my food wasn't the best and looked bland but I ate it, my husband had a burrito and he got to just about the end of the burrito and said "are you fucking kidding me?.." I was said "what's wrong!?" He turned his place around and there was a screw A SCREW in the burrito.. just disgustingly hanging out in the food.. I don't know how that even happens, how a screw can get into a place of food but we are very disappointed and extremely disgusted.. The prices went up as well.... They don't check temperatures when walking in, no gloves, some had masks on their chin, no sanitizer, and the place was pretty gross and grimy to be honest... you can see where they wiped down the tables but that place needs a serious deep cleaning because it's pretty disgusting when you sit and look around... theres like a sticky substance caked everywhere... Needless to say we will never be going back again..

Yelp
So my fiancé and I decided to try out a new place and he stumbled upon La Tapatia online. We passed this place several times since we live in the area so I was really stoked to try this place out. The restaurant can certainly be called a "dive" and in my past experiences that *usually* means the food and service are totally awesome. Unfortunately today was not the case...I didn't see a "seat yourself" sign when we first walked in but there were people waiting in line to order to go orders. My fiancé and I do see people seated with menus so I do a casual search of the place and see a stack of menus by the register. I grab two and one of the waitresses sees me and asks if we're eating here or to go. I say we're going to eat here and it's our first time so I didn't quite know the procedure and she just laughs and says "it's okay." So we make our way to a table and pursue the menu. My fiancé gets a huge glob of something on his hand from looking through the menu and it's HAND SANITIZER. I noticed several globs on mine and did my best to avoid it.... I ordered the enchiladas and it said on the menu it came with my choice of beef or chicken. I said beef and our waitress asked me what kind of beef. She points to my option on the menu and tells me it says my choice of Between THREE BEEFS and Chicken. (I'm thinking how the hell am I suppose to know because their beef options aren't exactly listed) I settled on beef fajita. My fiancé orders some sort of burrito and said he wanted chicken. Our waitress mumbled "it comes with chicken" and continued taking our order.... My food came out first and it was a good looking plate. My fiancé's plate hadn't come out and I hated to start without him so I waited. We were both pretty hungry so we started nibbling on the chips and we were both dipping in my queso sauce, the beans, and the rice. He prompts me to starting eating because he's food STILL hasn't come out yet at this point. I'm about half way through my enchiladas and I just put down my fork. I can't believe he's food STILL wasn't out. Our waitress hadn't come by to give us a status update, nothing. He goes up the counter where both waitresses are just leaning on the counter, and they tell him they are still waiting on the cook. Tell me why the next two plates to come out were to a table that got there not 15 minutes ago!? Why was my fiancé's plate brought out damn near 25 minutes AFTER my food was brought to the table?? I was NOT happy. Our waitress acted like she was new but was attentive to the other tables. Our waitress took our order, made us feel stupid for not knowing their menu. Our waitress came back two different times to ask us questions I feel like she should have asked at the time she took our order. No joke. She came back and asked me if I wanted corn or flour tortillas, and came back a second time to ask my fiancé what kind of sauce he wanted on his burrito. The ONLY reason this place is getting 2 stars is because the food is decent. The red & green sauces have great flavor, the enchiladas I got were really good, and my fiancé enjoyed his burrito. We won't be back, but I really wanted to share my experience today to save people the trouble. My trip today was not worth the $30 we threw down.

Yelp
Cheap and filling food tasty, nuff said. What I've had that were good - Al Pastor tacos, Barbacoa tacos, Beef Fajita Nachos (They're huge), Chicken Tortilla soup, al pastor tortas. Their chorizo and potato tacos were great for breakfast. Friendly staff too.

Raylee E.

Yelp
This used to be one of our favorite spots, being from south Texas these kinds of restaurants remind me of home. However, the past few times we've been it's definitely been a miss. From the food, to the prices, (excluding the service because staff is always friendly) I just don't see us frequenting this place like we used too. We went last week and had 2 lemonades and 2 orders of mini tacos and it was $37 before tip. The meat on the tacos had 0 flavor, nothing. It almost tasted boiled, and was a little Grayish in color. For $20 a person, I would much rather go somewhere consistent in quality of food.

Yelp
I just went back today for the first time in a long time. Previously it was the same old tune, great food, the worlds WORST service and that nasty mop water smell. However, I went at the request of my daughter and the service was outstanding, the food came super fast, and although they were moping, it didn't have that disgusting smell from before. What changed? Well turns out it now has new ownership and a better attitude to match. So no longer are you greeted by an angry crabby old lady, but instead service from people who care you took the time to come in. How's the food. Now that's the tiny issue. My dish was better under the old owners. It's not bad at all, just different. I need to try more dishes before rendering final judgement. I wish them the best in their new venture and I'm sure it will awesome because it looks like they actually care.

Yelp
Everytime I go back to Austin, I have to stop by here. This place reminds me of my childhood. Let me say this prior to this place, no restaurant/ store could remain in the storefront for more than 1 year. La Tapatia opened up during my junior year in highschool when I first got a car in 2007. Not only was the food cheap, I always left super stuffed. Sadly, I guess due to inflation and increases in food ingredient costs, the price of the food has gone up. Previous burritos that were $4.99 are now $6.49. By far the most dramatic price increases are in their breakfast plates. These increased from $2.99 to $5.99, and they now charge for extra salsa! Sad times indeed. Still, for me I will come here for the nostalgia reasons. My usual order is the Breakfast plate for breakfast or the burrito la tapatia beef barcaoa for lunch.

Yelp
We Saw it, We Yelp! The reviews were amazing the food in fact is great. The waitress we had was horrible, she bought our food. We waited 5 minutes for silverware she forgot to bring to us after bringing us our FOOD! So we're just sitting there being tease for delicious food, along with the food i ordered a side of queso & chips....she didn't bring the chips & forgot my flours tortillas for my entree long story short after waiting 10-15 minutes & my queso getting hard as clay i finally spoke up & was pissed. I sent back the queso for fresh queso & didnt tip the lady shit. Overall the food was great.

Jaime C.

Yelp
In the state of Texas you can buy beer at 10am on Sundays to go with your menudo. I was in the hopes of going there and have 1 beer with my menudo, when they said we can't until 11am. I wasn't going to stay there for an hour and wait. So we went to a different restaurant where we got what we wanted and it's 10:18 right now. I think you've lost my business and my family's business for ever. If I can leave a no star review I would.

Yelp
My first time at this location. Let's see how it turns. It was not my best experience. I had la mexicana it was good, the Mrs had carne casada it was ok.

Roberto G.

Yelp
Great place and nice environment but I just went to get some breakfast tacos and they gave me all the wrong tacos I ordered a egg and chorizo and two egg and papa tacos and got beans and papa and egg and bacon tacos
google avatar

Forrest W.

Yelp
Eating here for years and all the other times I've had no problem quick turn around and great service however I was eating there last Sunday and the service was horrible took almost an hour to get my food and there was only five people in the restaurant and then I saw the cook take frozen enchiladas out of the freezer to warm them up and I thought I was getting food that was made from scratch. And also the waitress did not speak English and could not explain why the service was so slow.

Yelp
Chillaquilales not cooked correctly, Tortillas not fried to proper consistency. Tortillas were not submerged and stirred in Sauce. They used low Quality Yellow Cheese Instead of Queso Fresco and used Sour Cream Instead of Mexican Crema. Also Eggs Slightly Burned. Very Culinary Backwards...
google avatar

Ellizabeth S.

Yelp
Did not cook eniladas after waiting 45 minutes for food brought the wrong order then second order the cheese was not melted and food was cold. No AC AND FLIES EVERYWHERE
google avatar

Damian K.

Yelp
Great food, great prices. I've been to other tex mex places in austin and ordered the same meal I did at La Tapatia. La Tapatia makes a better meal for a cheaper price.

Nick W.

Yelp
It's not a fun experience when you go in for the three-tacos deal and then they charge you an extra $2.50. Being talked over as if I didn't understand Spanish was really bad. I pointed to the actual sign, they still charged me more. It was offensive. The tacos were sort of average Mexican fare. Too oily and too salty. Bad food is one thing. Overcharging is another. Speaking about you in another language that you understand perfectly too much . This place sucks. Forget the food, it just sucks.

Tiffany O.

Yelp
Sooooooo good! The chilaquiles were delicious and I can't wait to bring my family back to try more items. Very happy I decided to stop by and try a new place out!

Charlie C.

Yelp
We have been by this place many, many times. Looks like an old fast food restaurant with a drive thru. Based on a positive review from a friend who had a good bowl of menudo, my wife and I decided to give it a try.. It will be the last time Dark inside, very spartan, with old tables and booths. It was seat yourself so we chose a booth upfront by the front door. The floor was the concrete slab stained and unpolished. No ambient music. There were only two other parties there which should have tipped us off. Wife ordered menudo which is why we came in. The menudo was acceptable (she gave it a 5 out of 10), but way too salty and tripe was in big pieces and would have to be cut with a knife. Into the to go cup it went. I ordered an appetizer of bean and cheese nachos with jalapenos and onions on the side and a main plate of beef enchiladas, taco, tostada, rice and beans. The food was almost uneatable. Nachos were served cold on a cold plate with stale chips, Canned cold queso poured sparcely over them with dabbs of refried beans in some spots. No jalapenos or onions and a dollop of sour cream and guacamole on the side. Cold order of nachos. Had to ask for the jalapenos and onions The enchilada plate was tasteless with unseasoned ground beef wrapped in wilted corn tortillas with little or no cheese. There was a small uncrispy taco with a uncrispy tostada with rice and beans...What a mess. Nothing was spicy, not even the waitress. I simply asked for a to go box (boxes). Oh, the iced tea was ok..Had to ask for sweet and low as it was not on the table. We reluctantly paid for this unrecognizable mexican meal as we want the staff to get paid. I blame this on the owner....
