10 Best Houston Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"Tex-Mex comfort food at its best. La Tapatia specializes in the kinds of plates you most likely grew up loving, from large plates of enchiladas and quesadillas with a healthy portion of beans and rice on the side to fajitas and seafood dishes. Naturally, there’s a great selection of margaritas. (Their half-frozen, half-rocks version is a must.) As an added bonus, it’s open until 3 a.m. and the late-night people-watching is A+." - Marcy Franklin

This restaurant os close to my job and a great place to stop by for happy hour while the traffic dies down a little. That happy hour house margaritas at very very strong! The asada street tacos, chicken quesadillas, rice and beans are delicious. Those are the only items that I’ve tried so far.. the bartenders are very polite and I love it.

If you’re craving authentic Mexican flavors, La Tapatia is the spot! The margaritas are strong, refreshing, and absolutely delicious 🍹🔥—definitely a highlight of the visit. I usually go for the beef and chicken fajitas, and they never disappoint. The meat is tender, well-seasoned, and served sizzling hot—perfect for wrapping in warm tortillas 🌯🥩🍗. The chips and salsa are a great starter—crispy, fresh, and the salsa has just the right kick 🌶️👌. On top of the great food, the customer service is excellent—friendly, attentive, and fast. Overall, a fantastic dining experience at La Tapatia. I’d give it a solid 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and will definitely be coming back! 🎉

Google
I'm giving a decent rating because Graciela was an attentive and friendly waitress. But the salsa was unbearably spicy. Plus, the vegetarian burrito, which costs $10, rarely had beans. The tortilla was not tasty. It was basically just sour cream and lettuce. How costly can it be to be generous with the refried beans filling? My friend's street tacos were served lukewarm. The only advantage about this place is that they open through 1 a.m. on weekends.

I enjoy this Mexican restaurant. It's close to home and I get to bring my doggy on the patio... the food is okay I've had better I always order chicken fajita quesadillas with spinach I come more for the ambience for me and my dog

Google
Their street tacos have to be the worst tacos I’ve had. No seasoning and they were drenched in onion and cilantro as to add somewhat of a flavor since the meat definitely didn’t. They also didn’t even come with salsa or any kind of hot sauce. The fajita plater was the same. Little to no flavor. Refried beans seemed to be from a can or something and just didn’t taste right. The shredded cheese was burned onto the plate. Which means they just threw the plate in the microwave to warm up the whole plate. We didn’t finish our food, paid and left. Would not recommend.

Google
5 stars from the bottom of my heart to this old-school place.. Still as cozy as it used to be back in the 90s when I was in college.. I'm just so attached to this place. Due to their fair prices back in the days, I & many other students like me considered this place as 2nd. home🏡 They used to have a couple of locations, and now they have grown to a big chain of authentic & home-style Mexican restaurant.. It is hard to transform your small family owned restaurant to a franchise business without losing the authenticity & originality of the cuisine, yet these guys have pulled it off with precision. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The staff was super friendly, the atmosphere was great and the food was amazing. I will have the fried quail again for sure. The size of one quail is small. So if you eat large meals order three or more. The food price was good compared to the quality

Yelp
The staff at La Tapatia are friendly and somewhat attentive. I went here after work for dinner. I decided yo get some beef fajita street tacos and a couple of happy hour margaritas. The service is prompt while dining in. The meat was seared to perfection, providing that satisfying taste that paired perfectly with the cilantro, onions, and lime ‍ juice. These tacos encapsulate the essence of Mexican street food and whether you're a taco enthusiast or a first-time visitor, these tacos are sure to satisfy your tastebuds!

Yelp
I drove by La Tapatia Mexican restaurant hundreds of times when I go to 24 hour Fitness on Richmond Avenue. I never thought I would be here last Sunday. It was 10:30 pm. I was starving and craving for menudo. I pulled out my phone and start searching after the gym. Most of restaurants are already sold out at that hour. I cheered when the waitress told me the kitchen had some menudo left. Woohoo, I said. She probably thought I was a goofball. I don't care what she thought of me. I've gotta have that menudo to fill my tummy. It was my first time in here. The brick wall and huge paintings set off a really nostalgic feeling. The sizzling sound and aromatic fajita got me going. That would be the next thing to try here. I sat far in the corner of the dining room. The waitress Graciela constantly checking on me. I love it. The menudo was just right thickness and right amount for $15.95, especially with those freshly chopped cilantro, onion, jalapeño and lime wedges. I saw a huge seating area right outside before the entrance. I think that would be a great party place.

Yelp
It's fine, nothing crazy amazing, nothing crazy bad. We got the street tacos to share with a side of rice and had more than enough food for us! Happy hour margs were on point tho!

Yelp
Never had one bad experience here at La Tapatia Galleria. Every time I go late at night, they seat me asap. Chips are brought out with red salsa and I'll also request green sauce (spicy). I love getting their combo plates because it's a bit of everything (under $20). Decided to switch it up and we added a beef fajita for 1, the portions did not disappoint. It was enough for 2 and priced at $25. I'll def be coming back here again soon

Yelp
Today my family and I came to eat in this location of the restaurant the tapatía Mexican café and the truth today we had a not wonderful experience because the green sauce that we asked the boy who passed us the nachos that they always give us brought red sauce and my sister who really likes the green sauce that the boy gives without thinking told him that if they had but he brought us a sauce that parasites water with coloring the mere truth was the craziest they gave us and then the waiters came to take the order well as always we asked for the mixed nachos to start but then they brought us the food first and then they brought us the nachos and then the flutes that I ordered without any notice they brought me mozzarella cheese with the flutes instead of fresh cheese and not only that but they threw me exaggeratedly cheese

Yelp
La tapatia prices have become outrageous. If I'm going to pay these prices for Tex mex/mexican food I'd rather go somewhere with a little more aesthetic and ambiance. My boyfriend who picks up food from here has also mentioned some rudeness from employees- but I haven't witnessed this first hand. The stuffed jalapeños are DELICIOUS, like so so good. We used to love the soup there too, but last time there was zero flavor which was very dissapointing. Not saying I would never go back, but just doesn't seem worth the price anymore.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years. We started coming when we were young, late at night after being at the clubs and it's as good as we recall it! Good for authenticity!!
google avatar

Jeannie D.

Yelp
La Tapatia was our sanctuary after crazy dinner shifts. Countless hours were spent here filling our sorrows with no fuss, boozey margaritas and Mexican comfort food. Bacon wrapped jalapeños dipped in ranch and their caldo de res are the ways to my heart.

Yelp
How do you mess up queso (1/5) ????? I came here specifically for queso and margaritas. The Rita's were generic, in both rocks and frozen type..nothing to come back for. But how do you mess up queso? Maybe the kitchen had an off day but it's been awhile since I ordered a $10.50 large serving of queso and it served to me in the most grainy texture I've had. This was definitely reheated or they didn't heat it enough. I had the asada quesadillas and pastor street tacos. Both were also generic in flavor, pastor was better imo. 2.75/5 I ended up picking up Roostar on my way home. Service was slow in the beginning after our wait staff changed three times. Probably because we were sitting outside, they probably forgot us. They were very friendly though!

Yelp
I've been here a few times because I live close. The service is always amazing and the restaurant always clean! One time I came and ate at the bar but since it was so nice outside, relocated to the patio with no issues. I've also never Had a problem getting seated quick. The food is good. Has whatever Mexican style food you want. I will be back!

Nevaeh W.

Yelp
I came here one time and I ordered the ground beef nachos, when I ate my entire plate expect for one then I checked it the MEET was RAW it has blood in it.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hit or miss. The beef fajitas and street tacos are pretty good. They have really good queso, I mix the salsa with it & it's delicious. My boyfriend was iffy on getting the Torta because they skimp on the beef but this time seemed to be okay. There seemed to be no beans in my bfs charro beans. I really enjoy their strawberry margs. The service is not that good. They don't refill drinks, you have to ask. Also another time we went I was not feeling good and my boyfriend didn't know so he ordered me an alcoholic drink while I was in the restroom. I was unable to drink it and when we told the bartender he was really rude about it. He told us that he couldn't refund us and was just a whole hassle. I didn't even touch the drink. At the end the drink was taken off our bill but we got an attitude with it. I thought that was very unprofessional and absurd.

Ariel M.

Yelp
Came here for an employee Xmas party. Everything about this place is awful- food, service, drinks, ambiance is terrible. Weak alcoholic drinks, slow service, mistakes all around the table, environment feels dull & it's over priced. Worst place in Houston to get Mexican food.

Yelp
I ordered the Mole Chicken Meal earlier, which was great, very good texture in every part of the meal and very tasty overall. The chicken quarter was juicy, tender and cooked right. The mole sauce smothering it all was flavorful with a fruity, muddy taste and velvety, creamy texture. I prefer Mexican mole to be a bit spicier n more chocolatey, but it was still very good imo and would get it again with this chicken leg. The rice was loose, sticky-grained, fresh n aromatic. The refried beans were very good in taste with a chunky texture as they should be. I can't stand when places give the really smooth kind making me wonder if they just made them from a can instead of making them in house. The red salsa n chips were very good. I didn't care for the side of corn tortillas here, but no biggie since the rice n beans were great. I didn't get a sangria this time for my drink here, but they do make them really good from what I remember, kinda tart n very refreshing.

Yelp
This is a neighborhood go to. They have great Al pastor tacos, enchiladas, and nachos. Their chicken tortilla soup is great too! Generally always have good service and good food! Nothing fancy but good spot for casual texmex and margaritas!
google avatar

Mahwish S.

Yelp
I would say food is average. I did like their quail it was cooked well with good flavor. They gave a small portion of rice and the beans could have had more flavor. Stuffed Jalapeños were also good. What turns my three star into a 4 star is because the bartender Mateo is excellent. He has great service and makes good drinks.

J A.

Yelp
Placed an order for nachos and this is the first time I come across a nachos plate with the meat not sliced in pieces. This looks like a fajita skirt just cut and thrown on. The meat itself was tender but it's also about presentation. Service was ok, I do suggesting asking customers if they want a refill or another alcoholic drink.

Yelp
We were there Saturday night and nearly everything that could go wrong went wrong. We got there and service was non-existent, we waited for nearly 15 minutes just to order drinks and appetizers even though our group had been there for about 30 minutes already. We then waited another 30 minutes to order food. 2/6 orders were incorrect, one of us returned the order and never got a replacement (even though the kitchen was "remaking it") even though we were there waiting for a total of 2 hours. Once we got the check 2 orders of the meal we're on our ticket. The staff was checked out but finally adjusted the bill since we didn't receive the food. We got outside and our car had been broken into and damaged window/ door. ***DO NOT PARK THERE*** We contacted the restaurant and they were unfortunately no help, they said the cameras may have caught something but would not be able to check. The person that could look would be there Monday. A server told me this is the third car that month, and good luck getting the cops out there. We waited 3 hours to file a police report, but the police never came (they said the area was very overwhelmed with various crimes and this was low priority). The people who took all of our things had scattered some of it through the street (assuming upon getaway) and we collected what we could find in the dark. Upon calling on Monday to get the camera footage and get the police looking into it, the restaurant now says they're not responsible for cameras and don't have access to the cameras at all, they insist it's part of the shopping center and we must contact them. They do not have a phone number for the shopping center and are unable to forward or direct us any further. It seems the place is either understaffed or under trained and a manager is never available as they're "busy". The food is ok, basic texmex but I would suggest going to a safer location (note there are two on Richmond). I'd opt for another restaurant altogether as the ambiance is better elsewhere.

Yelp
very good food excellent service staff is attentive, professional and friendly food is out quickly!! spacious environment

Yelp
This a good spot for late night dinners when everything else is closed. They have good queso and guacamole. Their margaritas are pretty standard too. The service is not always the best if you're sitting at a table, but bar service is pretty good.

Erandy M.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place because it's so close to me. Unfortunately, it let me down. The place looks super unappealing from the outside but I had hope when I walked in and it was nicely decorated and more importantly, clean. The staff was nice. Though I wish they would've been more attentive. It took awhile before someone noticed I needed my waiter's attention. The food was mid (okay not great, nothing special). The chips taste stale. The red salsa had no flavor so I asked for the green. The green salsa was so liquidy and literally had no flavor. I asked the waiter if they had any other salsas and they said no. It is very disappointing that a Mexican restaurant's salsas have absolutely no flavor or are even the least bit spicy! I will not be coming back :(

Yelp
Tepatitlan Mexican Grill was fulled around noon so we decided to stop by La Tapatia on Richmond Avenue on Sunday 11/12/23. I ordered the fish taco plate + 4 street tacos to share with my husband, he ordered a quesadilla plate. Food was typical, nothing to brag about but before we even ordered, the waitress asked me "what brand is the purse you are carrying because the lady over there (meaning her boss?) wants to know.". I kept quiet, looked at her & shook my head - my nice way of saying "mind your own business". The waitress took our orders, served the food & we were almost done eating when DRAMA#2 (the boss lady?) showed up at our table, went straight to my husband and asked my husband "what is the brand of the purse she is carrying?" in SPANISH without acknowledging me - obviously her pea brain can only handle men making purchases for women and not the other way round. We went to this restaurant to eat, drink a cup of coffee & move on. It was extremely unpleasant its waitstaff only cared about what patrons carry on their body instead of serving the food. And by the way, it was unsanitary when you held & touched the cup rim when you poured coffee into my cup.

Yelp
Bouncing around the Montrose my friend was hungry. I remembered this as basic Tex-Mex. I was surprised in a good way by vegetarian options. Immaculate restaurant killer cocktails and great service.

Veronica R.

Yelp
Great place ...amazing Mexican food! Great tacos and great parrilladas! Amazing flavor
google avatar

Gregg G.

Yelp
On take out orders chips and salsa which are complimentary if you dine in are $9.00. $2.95 each for chips and red and green salsas. Sorry, not going to pay that. That is insane. Lost a customer. You want to charge a couple of dollars for containers? ok. This is almost the same price as another entree for something that is complementary in the restaurant.

Yelp
We stopped by La Tapatia Richmond after visiting the nearby Hat Store and couldn't be happier. The service was friendly and the food items were memorable. Everything we tried was super tasty and I especially enjoyed their popular nachos. I look forward to returning.

Yelp
I frequent here every month and the food is very good. However I ordered togo and they told me it would be ready in ten minutes. I come and it ends up not being ready until 40 minutes. They said because they are busy but it is only 1/4 capacity at most. No apology, no chips, and no drink while I wait.
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
Stopped in for Tuesday dinner, was very quiet, early but did get busy after 7pm. drink was good, had the Enchiladas they were rather bland and were not all that hot coming from kitchen.
google avatar

Yelp
We really liked this place! Margaritas ok, food pretty good. Service excellent! Loved the fajita tacos! Loved the nachos! Salsa not my fav but not bad. We will definitely be back!

Yara M.

Yelp
The service is great, the ambiance is nice too. The street fajita tacos were horrible. The refried beans were soupy with a taste of burnt. I wasted my money. This was a couple of days ago

Yelp
I stopped by La Tapatia for a late, last minute lunch. The lunch specials are available from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Typically during happy hour, evenings, and late nights you can expect to be welcomed to a festive and jovial atmosphere, but lunch was much more refrained and subdued. It was nice being able to just relax and dine in the casual and unpretentious dinning room before jumping back onto my list of tasks to complete. I had the Burrito Plater stuffed with ground beef, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, etc., topped with a tasty queso and meat sauce. There was a side of rice, and a dab of guacamole. For the price, the lunch proportions were sufficient and the service was prompt. Other sound choices on the lunch menu include flautas, enchilada plates/combos, sizzling fajitas, and the option of ordering off of the full menu. Regardless of if you are seeking a low key lunch, or a fun and jovial happy hour, La Tapatia is a place to keep in mind.
google avatar

Valerie D.

Yelp
I used to come here back in the day as it was the go-to place after a few drinks. My friend who lives in another state still talks about missing it so I decided I'd give it a try again. The service was pretty good but the prices were so-so. $3 for a fountain soda and the lunch special was just a dollar off the normal price of an entree. The chips were well made and I did not hate the green and red sauce. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with refried beans and rice. I love beans and rice but there was little flavor in either of these sides. I used the red and green sauce to flavor them. The cheese enchiladas were fine. Basically, the food was just OK but there are so many other Tex Mex places in the area that are far better. I'd still come here late at night though if there wasn't another taqueria open.
google avatar

Yelp
Every so often you find a place that you don't want to share with everyone but with people you really like. That's how it felt at La Tapatia Taqueria with most of my main staples closed in observance for Memorial Day I was looking for something that light as I needed to get through a few books. What I got was a delightful treat. Plenty of parking as its located in a strip center at the corner of Richmond and Chimney Rock. Ambiance is well balanced - enough pleasant (not too loud) background music to complement some dainty conversation with one of more of your friend(s). Service was good, prompt, courteous and attentive are words I would use to describe what I recieved. As far as the quality of the food I would start with this - while store bought tortillas aren't necessarily lacking - there is a world of difference in how good they taste - the tortillas here are from scratch. Mimosa was good - not overpowering but enough to just feel it. Overall it was a great experience and I'll definitely be back

Ludy N.

Yelp
Waitress was awesome. Fast, friendly & welcoming. Quick, kid friendly & clean! Food got to us incredibly fast. Restrooms were soo clean. Food was delicious. Our waitress was welcoming and fast . Best part-margaritas!!! Sooo delicious. Music was perfect. coming back for sure!!!

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place has so many bad reviews. We love this place. It isn't appealing from the outside but once you try the food it's delicious and opened late night. We have had a few rude servers and hostesses but aside of that this is our go to place.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
They don't even deserve 1 star. Very Rude and racist they kicked us out saying they close at 11pm while they actually closes at 1am..... The food was not good at all. I don't normally like to give bad reviews, but it was a bad experience after all. We felt we were unwelcome because we were 3 white guys.

Xxxx A.

Yelp
I walked out. I'm an African American man. I don't want to assume but I was the only one there and I stayed long enough to see if I was imagining the difference. My first drink was poured by a barback because the bartenders were ignoring me. While the white and Mexican patrons directly next to me were served with eye contact and a smile all night, I had to literally wave down the bartender...who had been serving the person directly to my right (within one foot) all evening. Though others were checked on, offered refills, given service, I was ignored. I had to wave her down to get a refill and that was done with no eye contact or acknowledgement. When I finished my 2nd drink I waited patiently with an empty glass in front of me for over 15 minutes while I watched every other patron at the bar serviced fully with a smile. I didn't think that it was fair to have to beg to be acknowledged to pay my check, so I got up and left. I don't think that anyone noticed. But in case the narrative is "another Black guy skipping out on a check", know that it wasn't that, and that I'll pay for my two glasses of wine if management contacts me. But it was beneath my dignity to beg to be asked if I needed my check while others were being served and I was being completely ignored for my entire visit. If you don't want to serve Black men, find another job... I literally signed up for Yelp to leave this review because I feel insulted. My previous visit was pleasant, so please note the date and time of this review. It is specific to this visit.

Devon D.

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. If you want the worst service you've ever had & subpar Mexican food, this place is for you. Queso took 20 minutes & came out cold. I had to ask 3 different servers for a water refill. Only to be ignored by all 3 of them. We never got napkins. Just a horrible place to eat. Like take pride in your job guys. Shouldn't be open if your going to Consistently give subpar service. Terrible place. Yuliana was my waitress.
google avatar

Todd P.

Yelp
Good. Solid Tex Mex food in Houston. Nothing you are going to go out of your way for but it is definitely consistent and delicious. Good margaritas, chips, and salsa. What is key is that their prices are reasonable Compared to some other Mexican restaurants around town. Can't go wrong and rarely if ever a wait. Also, a great place if you want to grab a quick meal.

Daymara L.

Yelp
never come here , my friend end up at the hospital because they don't cook the chicken well , he called to tell the manager and she said it's his fault to eat it like that that and then block him
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
I used to like this place but every time I gave them a chance it always done something like give me tacos over cooked or they forget to put something in my orden. Hope it will be improve it cause this is very expensive to received this service.

Terry W.

Yelp
Went in on 12/19/2023 to enjoy their great food but unfortunately the server Kenion Martinez was really bad at his job. Was only checked on once to see how the food was but after that he never came back to see if we needed anything else until we were ready to leave.
google avatar

Ashley E.

Yelp
So I'm torn on this rating. 5 stars for service. We went during lunch hour, we were seated right away, and the waitress refilled our drinks without need to ask. She took our order and we literally had our food in like 7 minutes, which was amazing considering lunch rush. So the food was just okay. The tortillas were store bought. I hate store bough tortillas. I got enchiladas and it was filled with hamburger beef, the menu described this but it was just so bland. My buddy had fajitas and I was a bit jealous but he commented there was no taste to them either. My other buddy got soup and she has the same opinion. I really wish I would have liked this place, but the food just didn't hit the spot. We may come back again, just because I really want to like this place.
google avatar

Timothy S.

Yelp
5 for food, 4 for drinks, 3 for service. The food is much better than other Tex Mex I have had in Houston. Their salsa (both red and green) was wonderful. The beef in my burrito was tender and flavorful. Drinks were a little weak but were cheap and worth the price. Service was mediocre at best. Slow, missing in action and now good at suggestions for a new custoI definitely will be going back but hope to have a different, better server.

Yelp
Came here on Mother's Day with the family and we had a great experience. Nice staff & delicious Mexican food! Me and my boyfriend order a Parillada Puebla that came with fish filet, chicken, beef, shrimp for two. It came out sizzling and you choose corn or flour tortillas. Everyone enjoyed their dish! We also order Flan and Tres Leches for dessert. Nice family oriented restaurant!

Yelp
street taco is gooood and drinks great and beers cold and service Veronica Ramos is great , just ask her she lead to best options.

Yelp
If you come into this place for drinks yea fine but for food.... I found a hair in my salsa this is horrible.... It's the first thing you learn when you Cooke to put on a hat.

Dalyn R.

Yelp
Overpriced and not good at all. Prices did not match the quality. Margeritas were small but probably the best thing on the menu. Happy hour is well worth going tho
