The Best Bakeries in New Haven, Connecticut | Eater Boston

"Rows of tall bakery racks practically overflow with massive treats at La Tapatia, a compact Mexican panadería in Fair Haven. Friendly staff supply you with a tray and tongs to self-select, wrap, and tally your order, and offer insight upon request, since the mouthwatering assortment is displayed without labels. Walk out with a selection of gorgeous pan dulce like flakey abanico puff pastry, bisquete sweet rolls, and guava-filled peinetas." - Stasia Brewczynski

This place use to be best! I dont know what happend. Yesterday i spent $31.75 on 8 pastries. The quesitos had mold. Este lugar fue el mejor! No sé qué pasó. Ayer gasté $31.75 en 8 pasteles. Los quesitos tenían moho. Tengo fotos. I tried to contact the owners but the lady over the phone said that they are never in. To come in the morning with the mold quesito. Which i still have. Everything i bought tasted old!!!! Nothing was freah. Im sooo pissed. I live 35 minutes away. Im sorry but what the hell happened to the quality of their pastries?

Well, I usually stop there. But I stopped late in the evening that day, and the food was very stale actually ended up tossing it because it was too hard. First time in many that I was disappointed.

The best “Rosca de Reyes”, nice and small bakery in New Haven. Location is a bit tricky for street parking. Small place for delicious take out Mexican/Latin bread.

Bought 4 pieces of pan, costed me $19.57 Later that day I decide to have my Spanish speaking girlfriend call them to ask how much a piece of pan is, they said $3.59 each. (Which the total should’ve been about $15) The worker blatantly charged me for two extra pieces, most likely because I’m white and my Spanish is not too good, definitely don’t go to this bakery if you don’t speak Spanish fluently they will try to take advantage of you, it’s unfortunate I have to have my girlfriend go with me so I don’t get scammed… disgusting behavior

Yelp
3 conchas, marbled cake/muffin, guava cheese danish, tres leche cake and flan came out to 32 bucks. I wouldn't have been grabbing as much if I knew the prices. There were no pricing on the breads and cakes. The marbled cake and concha were a bit dry. Flan is good, nice and creamy.

Yelp
The owner knows her craft and was so pleasant! The smell mild, the music celebratory and the colors are bright! These cakes and pastries will have you filling up a whole tray (we filled two bags to take home!) They have an assortment of cakes which are excellent for birthdays! Sadly no seating, this is a store made to take these delicious treats home! It is worth improving on my Spanish! I look forward to eating these with my friends and family!

Yelp
Superb panaderia, far better than any I went to when I lived in Arizona. "La tapatia" means "woman from Guadalajara," and it turns out Guadalajara is renowned as a foodie spot. Rightly so -- this little bakery has a huge variety of huge pastries, reflecting the variety of Mexican baking, including its French influences. For $8.50, I came home with four gigantic pastries, including bigote con crema, broca with chocolate and coconut, and something that looks similar to ricotta pie. This morning they definitely had bisquets, besos, abanicos, a raisin sweetbread, cubiletes, the usual muffins and conchas, and lots more that doesn't stick in my memory but looked promising. Trays aren't labeled, so I just picked whatever looked most intriguing in the moment -- it's all fresh and high quality. (I know from experience that I like every flavor conventionally used for fillings in pan dulce, though.) In true panaderia style. you take a tray and a set of tongs, and you serve yourself. The nice person at the counter wraps your pastries and takes your payment. I'm eyeing Google Maps for a comfortable walking route, so I can justify going here more often.

Yelp
What an incredible gem. This place offers amazing pastries, presented in the attractive, colorful storefront on Grand Ave. A refreshing breath of air from the Italian-American pastries is the fact that Mexican pastries are less sweet, allowing you to indulge and enjoy the sweet delights rather than getting fed up from all the sugar. People behind the counter are super friendly and bring out new surprises every few minutes. You do not need to know any Spanish as you are free to roam around the store and pick things onto your tray but it does not hurt to say a little Hola :).
