Born as a food truck, La Taquiza’s downtown spot brings pambazos, trompo‑spun pastor, and a salsa bar to a lively patio space. Spotlighted by the Lexington Herald‑Leader and a regular in local taco‑week lineups.

This place has great style, and the service was great. There are a lot of menu options, and I liked that they had a nice selection of vegetarian and seafood options. The food was good (empanadas, enchiladas, fish tacos, guacamole, rice, and beans) but could use a bit more seasoning.

We took my daughter and her fiance to celebrate his promotion at work, and we could not have picked a better place to eat. First of all, the food was amazing and delicious. Secondly, the staff was awesome and helped us celebrate. I love the people who work there. Lastly, they have a great atmosphere and an extensive salsa bar with fresh chips. The portions are extremely generous, so I often just get a single taco. That runs me about $4.50 to $6, making it very afforabke to go out. My family gets bigger dishes that runs between $10 and $15. Most of them take food home with them. This is a very afforable place to eat.

Service can be slow but the food is excellent every time. Definitely a caliber above the norm. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Enjoy!

Came for lunch on cinco de mayo the place is beautiful inside I like that they have a salsa bar it’s different I do wish the sauces were labeled though but still enjoyable I got a lunch fajita Al pastor and it was good I paid for extra shrimp and that made it great. Would definitely recommend to others and plan to come back and try other menu items. The house margarita was eight dollars, which I feel was a little pricey so I didn’t have one. Decided to get a flan to go which was tasty . The service was just ok

Google
Very good food. They were short staffed when we came in. The single waitress was working really hard, but it was still slow. Left a large tip, that was not her fault. The chiro Sunday was very good as were the chicken quesadillas, and the burrito bowl which I made vegetarian with all beans.

Google
Seriously, an incredible food experience that is only elevated with their beautiful plating! Very affordable too. I have eaten here multiple times, there are no bad options. The Birria!!! If I had an abuela, this certainly seems like it would come from her kitchen. The tortas are also fire and very generous on portions. The setting is chill and vibes are great. Selfishly, I almost hate to review this place. I want to keep this gem to myself. But in all seriousness, you need to try this place…you will be back for more!

Google
Was my first time, food was great and affordably priced. We sat outside since the weather was lovely. Service was a little slow with only a few tables, but overall we still had a great time. Definitely will try again!

Google
How have we just discovered this place?!? We went and loved absolutely everything. The meat was tender, the margaritas were amazing. (And 2 for 1!). And don't even get me started on their salsa bar! I've never felt those have quality food on a salsa bar but at this place each one was so flavorful. They really need to do a salsa class, I'd love to learn how to make any one of them.

Yelp
Incredibly delicious food, and the freshest, most authentic Mexican you will find in Lexington. No matter whether you're craving just chocolatey mole, enchiladas verde, street tacos, or quesabirria, La Taquiza has delicious foods satisfy your cravings. Staff are friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious. If you're tired of bland, stodgy Mexican food that is the same old, same old be sure to check out several of the dishes at this fantastic restaurant.

Yelp
My family and I recently decided to try La Taquiza and we placed a carry out order on our way home from an event. I struggled to find a rating for this restaurant and am settling on a three mainly because we had a few issues with our order and it was pretty pricey for a Mexican dinner. For our very hungry family of four, we ordered empanadas, flautas, the dip Trio, a cheese quesadilla, and two chimichangas. The dip trio was great - the guacamole was incredible! The empanadas were delicious, but had to wrong fillings. The flautas were rolled with very little filling and were mostly fried tortilla - but the middle bites with the toppings were quite tasty. The cheese quesadilla came with chicken, so my picky child wouldn't eat it - and after tasting it, I found the chicken to have a burnt smoky taste that almost tasted like cigarette smoke (we don't smoke so it wasn't from our car ride or our home). Both the chimichangas were made with the wrong fillings, and one had the same chicken taste as the quesadilla. The other was ok, but we don't particularly love pork. Had it been beef, it would have been incredible because the sauce and red onions were fabulous toppings. We may try again, but our neighborhood spot is about half the price and always correct. The staff at pickup was very friendly and all smiles, qualities I really appreciate!

Yelp
This place is unbelievable! The decor is ALIVE, fun and full of life. The staff was very kind and hardworking. The kitchen was a one man show tonight and can I tell you he can crank out some mouthwatering delicacies! It was so hard to decide what to order because my mouth was watering watching dish after dish come out of the kitchen. I went for the house margarita with salt and be prepared it hits you, in a good way! Then I had the verde enchiladas with carnitas. OMG! To die for, the best, flavor, moist, colorful presentation, phenomenal beans. I can't say enough positive things about this place. I'll be back for sure! Stop in and support these hardworking staff members and enjoy the delicious food that will take you away to an exotic place with all the flavors

Yelp
On my way back from downtown, I stopped for lunch. Had the Enmoladas con Pollo --- three stuffed with chicken and a side of Mexican rice. Very Filling Took half home Very friendly staff. Still my favorite. 45

Yelp
Been here twice and just don't get it. Like $20 for lunch. They charge for chips and salsa. Also very slow service. There are plenty of great Mexican spots in town. Think I'll stay away from this one for now. The food looks beautiful and can be quite tasty but it's way overpriced.

Yelp
Food is great. It is very convenient. Service needs better work and they just need to greet people when they come to their restaurant. Very kid friendly l, but relaxing chill and calm. Definitely a spot to go if you are downtown lexington

Yelp
The food here is excellent!! We started out with some chips and guacamole- the portion was plenty for our group of 5. I also noticed there is a "salsa bar" that I'd like to try next time! For an entree I ordered a veggie taco and the huitlacoche taco- they were bigger sized street tacos and packed with fillings. I saw a few reviews mentioning bad service - that was not our experience here- our server was very attentive and checked in on our group frequently. The parking situation is not great- mostly street parking which can make it difficult to find a space during the busier times.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place for Mexican food in Lexington. It is clean, bright, and the servers were friendly and attentive. The food is delicious. They have so many options that you don't see at other Mexican restaurants. The food is presented beautifully and the drink menu is extensive.

Debbie S.

Yelp
Food: one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in Lexington. Authentic, well priced, and great tasting food. You do have to pay for chips, but the free salsas were great. Service: Agreed with other reviews - service is slow, and food takes a while to come out. Tables were not quickly cleaned, and were quite small for each party. Long wait time for parties as well. Likely need some additional efficiency improvements in the kitchen and front of house. Ambiance: well decorated, but need bigger tables!

Ari P.

Yelp
The food. Is above average. The Menu as most mexican places is very extensive. Sometimes less is better. Would suggest paring down to what is doing well over time. The plate presentation is very good . Service probably will hinder their growth. Could do with some basic training of staff which would improve the customer experience. Ambience needs a lot of work. Place is lovely with a clean uncluttered look. But the staff found the number 11 on the volume for the mexican popular music. My head was hurting by the end of the lunch. Its not supposed to be a night club. I asked politely to turn down the volume so i could atleast converse with my friends but the volume was lowered to 10. The lady taking the order who also controlled the music actually was finding it difficult to hear us tell our orders. I actually like spanish music but they set it at a painful level. Uncomfortable is an understatement for how loud it was. Overall the food was good but the noise is just too much to come back.

Yelp
What DIDN'T go wrong? Our server was rude, walking away mid-sentence when I inquired about when we could expect our missing basket of chips, 15 minutes after all the others arrived; you have to pay for your chips, FYI. Not uncommon these days, but worth noting in context. One of our friends got her tacos - TACOS! - 45 minutes after the rest of us received our food, mostly also tacos. Another friend canceled her strawberry daiquiri after waiting an hour. The rest of our drinks were dry for the last hour we were there, no refills or fresh drinks were offered. The cocktails menu is outdated (BOGO margs no longer offered on Mondays and Fridays) and the whole "post and tag a picture and get your margarita free" is a total scam; they tell you AFTER the fact (as you're paying the tab) that you can redeem a mini lime margarita, right then. Ok, can I get it to go?! Let's see, what else? Oh, roughly 20-25 minutes for sour cream. Did I mention the place was half full? So they can't blame a packed house! The real crux is: The food is good, like really good. Well, not the chips, but everything else, including the salsa bar, super good. But the service was so abominable I don't feel the need to EVER spend money there again. A real shame. Did I mention they HOVER over you while you check out? That makes not wanting to tip a terrible server very awkward. Smart play by them, but no less infuriating. And what's worse? No one cares. This review won't get responded to and subpar service will be allowed to continue. So buyers beware!

Yelp
Great spot that shouldn't be overlooked. A small bar but many tables available to sit. I got a cold beer and it hit the spot. The enchiladas were delicious.

Yelp
This is our go-to Mexican restaurant in Lexington. That said, a couple of areas for improvement. The main thing is of course the food. We've really enjoyed the tacos and tonight I had a burrito for the first time - it reminded me of great burritos in Houston. Didn't quite match the best Houston burrito but it did remind me ... Guac is good but needed a bit of salt, which is easily remedied (better too little than too much). Also overall really like the vibe - fun decor, friendly staff, just feels like a nice neighborhood place. Now the areas for improvement: 1) Tables - Tonight we sat at a high top and it was just too small for four chairs, at least the chairs that were set there were just too big for the space. Also (some of?) the outside tables are too high for the chairs. 2) Drinks - The house margaritas are just not that good. Very sweet, just tastes like they are trying to save money on alcohol by adding lots of mix. Is there even tequila in the drinks? Between that and other drinks we'd have, I'd give the bar a C+ at best. Also the (new?) menu has draft beers listed that aren't available - kind of shabby showing. Given the vibe of the place, some local beer options would be a nice touch - don't need to have "all" the Mexican brands, right? Anyhow, we always enjoy ourselves at La Taquiza and hope to see it improve!

Yelp
Great spot just outside downtown. Food is absolutely delicious and has a more sophisticated flare. Lunch enchiladas with verde sauce is my plate of choice. Will update with picture.

Yelp
A few kinks to still be worked out at this location but overall excellent. Bright, welcoming space. Fish tacos and shrimp tacos were excellent - crispy, colorful presentation. All very fresh. Great options on the salsa bar. A little pricey for a few items but what isn't right now? Extensive menu. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Starting with the location and look of the place, it looks great in a nice place. The decor is amazing especially the outside part where I ate. Tables were sticky because of the shiny film. Moving on to the service. You're seated fast and order is taken fast and the staff was attentive. Again this is my personal experience on a Saturday afternoon. Finally the food, it wasn't as good as the place looks I'll tell you that. I came here to eat and the horchata kind of ruined the meal. The burrito I tried had two sizes and the extra money paid for the larger size wasn't worth it. The Tijuana burrito was good, worth $11.99 good? Debatable. Overall I think a 3 star is pretty fair but this is a very light 3.

Yelp
One of the most amazing places for brunch . The food is authentic and delicious. The Sopa Bennys and chilaquiles are simply to die for. Best kept secret in Lexington.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything I've had here is good. Their homemade salsas and beans are outstanding. Street tacos, birrillas, queso burritos...all good.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
Went with a group; had excellent, friendly service. Food was authentic Mexican; several pages of choices of drinks and food both. Had live music that really fit the scene. Salsa bar has about 5 different choices. Even has good choices for vegetarians. We were all happy.

Matthew G.

Yelp
Went back 4/22/24 for dinner-food was still very good. Service really needs to improve. Server was not over worked, just slow, non communicative and forgot several items, several times. They were waiting on a table of 4, all of who have worked in food services for at least 2 years each, so we were patient, but management needs to work on the front end...it will cost them customers and business.
google avatar

Amie B.

Yelp
This place was just okay. A Lex local recommended it and the recent Yelp reviews were all excellent, so I felt like it would be a sure bet. Started the meal with a house margarita and cheese dip. I was surprised to find the dip was bland. The margarita was too sweet for my liking, though I did appreciate the festive presentation. The chile relleno taco was also bland though it had goat cheese and pickled onions. The tinga chicken taco was the best thing about the experience. The atmosphere is bright. Love the Frida Kahlo bathroom wallpaper. Service was good. Just wish the food had been more flavorful.

Yelp
I have tried very hard to like this place on multiple occasions, mostly because it's in my neighborhood and a lot of people seem to enjoy it. That said, I've been on at least seven or eight visits and each one has gotten progressively worse. After the last visit, I will not return. Incredibly slow service from a bunch of kids who just stand around and talk to each other. Most recently, it took over 15 mins to get a single draft beer and I was one of three customers--while I counted four staffers standing next to the bar area. Even after I voiced my frustration, no one did anything. The server simply said the bartender "just took a long time." No apologies. $4.00 for stale chips and salsa from a self-serve bar (most recently with hair in it), and overpriced food lacking much flavor. The owners need to spend more time in their restaurant to whip it back into shape, or this location will not survive. I cannot recommend visiting this restaurant without some big changes.
google avatar

Ellie E.

Yelp
I can't wait to come back! The atmosphere is so fun and the food is incredible. The salsa bar is one of my favorite parts. Our waitress was very kind and on top of it. Best mexican place in town.
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
Checked out the new Tex mex place tonight, and it's gooooooooooooood. Chips and salsa are a little different, you order chips or an appetizer to get fried tacos to break up, they have a salsa bar of 5 different salsas, tried everything but the hot, and they were really tasty. Good sized menu, and lots of things looked good, so I let the bartender pick for me, knew I was in good hands as the quesabirrias were incredible. Impressive drink/food specials Monday-Thursday. They were busy, servers, bartenders were hustling non stop. Servers called in on them, so they were battling tough odds, taking care of people, bartender was non stop positive, really impressive in that environment. Great atmosphere for a date, night out with friends. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
The service was not good. We arrived at 6:45PM, had someone finally seat us on sidewalk, waited 15~20 minutes for a server and eventually tried to flag one down with no success. Went inside to ask for service, but no attendant. Went back outside to wait a few more minutes. Never got served and left. The other reviews about bad service appear to be true. Not a good experience and would not recommend.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Went there earlier this winter and loved the food and the experience. We were among the few Anglos in the midst of several Latino families, and their joy was contagious! And, like I said, the food was delicious -- and not Americanized! I will go back, especially since it's a quick stroll from Kenwick, in the former location of Sav's on Main. !

Karim K.

Yelp
Definitely the most authentic Mexican place I've tried in Lexington so far. Immaculate and clean vibes, must be a very new or recently renovated restaurant. Very fast service, the kitchen readied our food very quickly. I got the chicken supreme burrito, highly recommend it, everything about it was fresh. Wasn't able to try any alcohol, they're still working on getting their liquor license. I don't think they have soda on tap if you still drink soda. Highly recommend this place!

Silvia V.

Yelp
Amazing food, service and friendly staff that served gracious portions to our guests, menu suggested was perfect for our event and our guests love all the delicious food, especially the Cochinita Pibil. Thank you for our delightful evening.

Kerry F.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place out for sometime. And now I'm mad at myself for not going sooner. We got chips and salsa,I ordered the Tijuana burrito with asada polo. The chips came out they give them to you in a full tortilla, they were good & you get your salsa at the salsa Bar. My Burrito was prob the best one I've ever had! Can't say enough about it My wife got the Quesabirrias they were Excellent as well we will definitely be back
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
I' ve been here twice - the food tastes great! They still have some kinks - street tacos MUST have 2 tortillas - they completely fall apart. They are full of meat and all the things but you can't hold them at all. There is only one tortilla. I would prefer tortilla chips for the dips. They give you 4-5 whole tortillas to break apart which take care of 1/2 your dip but then you must ask for more. They are not yet attentive enough to what their customers need. It will succeed but needs more support and a very intuitive manager.
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
We have been very excited for this second location to open as their other location is my favorite Mexican food in town. If you like more authentic and progressive mexican dishes this is the spot to go! Their tortas are awesome and so are the tacos, empanadas, and everything else we have tried there!
google avatar

Jesse D.

Yelp
Waiter forgot to bring my entree and I could never get ahold of him again, so I sat there for 45 minutes while my wife nibbled on her food, not wanting to eat without me. Just a mistake on his part, I guess, but completely ruined our first and only experience here.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
What an incredible disappointment. My wife and I wanted to try this restaurant because of the pictures of the food posted on here. It all looked so delicious. It did not fail to live up to the food looking great. It did fail for the taste living up to the pictures. When your first bite of your sope is nothing but gristle and fat it is hard to overcome that kind of set back. When your sope is so tough that it is hard to cut with a knife and fork it is hard to overcome that kind of setback. When your 4th and 5th bites are nothing but gristle and fat it is game over. In addition to the disappointing sopes there was unexpected roughage in the rice. A piece of plastic was mixed in with my second bite. I enjoy music as much as the next person but when I am out to dinner with my wife I don't want it so loud that we couldn't have a decent conversation. I understand that it started out as a much loved food truck. Maybe they grew too much too fast. There were two positive notes on our dinner. The salsa bar was quite nice and the horchata was good. Other than that I found nothing to recommend this place. Spend your $35 somewhere else.

A B.

Yelp
Food is AMAZING. Not the traditional Americanized Mexican restaurant that you find in every Midwest town. Think food truck style Mexican. Freaking deeeeeeeeeelicious. Any reviews criticizing the food are unwarranted. Chips are different, not a huge fan of those (probably my gringo taste buds) but the salsas make up for them. Atmosphere is really cool and it's newly remodeled. Patio seems like a good place to grab a drink with friends. Tables are really high so it feels kinda awkward. Service seems to be heavily criticized. Our experience was fine, so must be hit and miss. Everyone around us was served quickly. A tad on the expensive side. I was skeptical but it's in the neighborhood so we gave it a try. 100% will be back.
google avatar

Brad R.

Yelp
The food is really good here...but the tables in the patio are super tall and the chairs super short. So it feels super awkward. And the music is crazyyyyy loud! We went and could not talk to each other at all. So really it was a great door dash place terrable to sit inside.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
My new favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Delicious drinks, great salsa bar and everything I've tried on the menu is amazing! Check it out. A great outdoor patio also!
google avatar

Destinee A.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere and good Mexican food! We went on a Saturday night and there was live music - once we were able to move to table on the (heated) patio we really enjoyed our time. We were initially seated so close to the music that we couldn't enjoy conversation (there's not a ton of seating). The queso comes with fried tortillas that you break apart yourself as opposed to a basket that they refill. I ordered a burrito and I really enjoyed it. Soft drinks are sold by the bottle.

Julie S.

Yelp
La Taquiza Taqueria Centro grand opening was today! I will be a regular. Big selling point for me is the variety of salsas. Mild would be spicy to some, two hot varieties were delicious. Warm inviting space and decor. Today I just got a variety of tacos to take to a gathering but I'm looking forward to trying other items!
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
I've had the guacamole, empanadas and fajitas and all were excellent. The service was quick and fantastic. Can't miss at either location but Richmond Rd. is probably a better sit down dining experience if that's what you are seeking.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
First time at the new location on E. Main Street. Had a margarita and three street tacos: two asada and one chorizo. The shell on the tacos was single layer (which I preferred to double) and larger than other street tacos I've had in town. Plenty of meat, cilantro, and onions. The sauce bar with five different sauce options was a great way to change the flavor with each bite. Highly recommend and cannot wait to go back.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Finally got to see the newer location, and as always delicious food. Some people do not like the "chips" that you get but I love the salsas and the tostado chips that are given. I need to explore the menu more but I got the Al pastor tacos and of course they were amazing. The flavor is there, hint of spice with the pineapple to help balance it. This is always my go to taco place! It's a must try. There is a second location on Tiverton that is just as good!
google avatar

Quinn T.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great food, and great people. Will definitely be visiting again. My group ordered the Chile Relleno, quesabirria, and veggie tacos and highly recommend each. Would also recommend the street corn and chicharroncitos! The patio is heated and indoor space cozy and fresh. If you're looking for some great Mexican food this is it.
google avatar

Karl W.

Yelp
I dunno how this place doesn't have 5 stars. The food isn't like other mexican restaurants. Everything they've got is scrumptious and you can really taste the originality and authenticity. Meanwhile places that have chicken and steak as their only meats get 5 stars.

David H.

Yelp
First time visiting. The Birria tacos were very good as was the pork taco my wife got. The carne asada taco was so tough she couldn't eat it. A little pricey, I know everything is these days. Thinking $38 for five tacos and a coke and chips is a little much. Cool little place, worth trying.

Keith M.

Yelp
Birerra torta is great. I have been back several times and it has not disappointed ever.

Yamile G.

Yelp
Great customer service THE BIRRIA TACOS ARE IMMACULATE ‼‼‼ Gustavo my server and he works as the host most days gave great customer service and was super nice I highly recommend I've already been 3 times in a month
google avatar

Stephen T.

Yelp
The service is a bit confusing/confused but the food is inventive and authentic and as tasty as it gets.

Spence S.

Yelp
I have been here twice and got take out both times. First experience was good! I got the same item today l and I'm pretty disappointed. These are the tacos light. The first time I got them they were so full of chicken, veggies, pico, avocado and the lettuce was super intact. I was satisfied. I expected the same today but the quality was awful. These would be sad tacos even if they were on tortillas. I guess this is a warning that you might not have a consistent experience which is a bummer because it was great the first time. ‍

Yelp
Landed here after a recommendation at a local brewery. The place is very festive. Bright colors, fancy patterns, and interesting tile abound. Local artwork (for sale) adorns some of the walls. The host sat us timely on an early Sat evening. Our waitstaff was cheerful and attentive. Started the meal with a margarita on the rocks. It looked fantastic. As did the queso. Served with whole, round fried corn tortillas, not chip size. An interesting part of the meal. The queso looked like standard (not a bad thing) queso, pale with specks of color and also goat cheese. Which was also the cheese that was stuffed in my chile relleno taco. I noticed it as an ingredient in multiple dishes. I don't think I've ever seen it on a taqueria menu before. And sadly, that goat cheese was not enough to carry the day. The specks of color in the queso added no depth. The relleno fell flat. Even the margarita, bordering on too sweet, was too bland to even reach that. I also had a street taco (asada) and thankfully, this simple treat was done as expected. Soft corn tortilla, steak, cilantro, and onions. Nothing fancy here. And by far the best thing. There is a sauce bar with five available. Of the two I tried, the smooth green, which is what I usually put on my asada, matched the blandness of the other food. The habanero had good flavor. I really wanted to like this. Just wish the flavors were as festive as the atmosphere.
