Where to Eat Magnificent Mexican Food in New Orleans

"La Tia is one of the best new Mexican restaurants to open in the area in the last few years, an inspiring collaboration between Leo Vazquez and Luis Nava. Their range is vast, from a bright shrimp aguachile and unexpected pork belly tamale to rustic regional specialties like chamorro. A must-try cocktail menu likewise impresses." - Clair Lorell

Yelp
Our second trip was on the 18th of June, 2024, We focused on the Brunch menu to celebrate my birthday (82). We chose Chilaquiles (de Mole), Enchiladas (de tomatillo), a postre that was a flan, and Ice cream. When I left Mexico in 1958 - I am bilingual and know capitalino food - This food tasted authentic but I was disappointed in the presentation because the food that was online showed with Queso Fresco (crumbled), chopped white onion, and sour cream-- the way it is done in Mexico but server said it was served on request. But I enjoyed the food. It was a very pleasant repast. The server was "simpatica" The Early morning food seemed to slow the Server. The "cafe de hoya" was weak coffee and not prepared well (I suggest the chef teach the servers how to present cafe de hoya Your electronic food editor is not working well. I do not mean to be negative because I enjoyed the food. Someone in the kitchen should see what is being served. Ron Alonzo

Yelp
there has been a lot of positive talk about this restaurant so decided to check it out. overall it delivers more authentic mexican-style food as opposed to tex mex. they offer a lunch special so we ordered the enchiladas verdes and enchiladas verdes plus beef taco. we also got a single taco cauliflower and complimentary chips and salsa were provided. the chips and salsa were good, the salsa tasted homemade and had good flavor. the cauliflower taco was outstanding with excellent flavor on both the cauliflower and the toppings; also good portion size for the taco. the enchiladas and taco were also good - a decent portion size so that you are full but do not have leftovers. overall a good place for authentic-style mexican food with good flavor and medium portion size

Yelp
The salsa was great - nice and smoky with roasted peppers and has a good kick. I had the grilled chicken burrito with a side of black beans. The burrito was an excellent blend of rice, black beans, cheese, grilled chicken, (I removed pico de gallo but it comes with it). The flavors meshed wonderfully - smoky, cheesy, tasty, and a hint of lime. Burrito is sealed with some grilled cheese so that it stays together - a tasty touch. My wife got the chicken fajitas. They do not come out on a sizzling cast iron pan, which is a nice deviation from everyone else. The chicken was delicious, peppers and onions were cooked to perfection. Our server was very friendly and held great conversation. We will be back!

Yelp
This place was really cute and was clean. The place was kind of empty on a Saturday around 4ish or so. I was greeted upon entering and decided to sit at the bar. Please get the blueberry mint margarita....it was delicious to the last drop. I was told the bartender makes his own syrups for the drinks and it honestly tasted like it. I got the birra tacos to eat which is 3 small tacos and comes with rice and beans. I did think serving sizes were smaller than I'm use to for the price but the flavors were good. They also bought out complimentary chips and salsa so that helped with portion size. I paid about $30 or so. Although I don't think there's anything spectacular about this place, I'd go back.

Yelp
Great service - excellent food - good prices. Had the shrimp fajitas, more than I could eat. Unique salsa with the chips. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
Great service , great food ! I had tacos al pastor and they were amazing ! Also had a tres leches and it was good also. I would come back for sure

Yelp
First the service is probably the best thing about the place. Second the food is also good. I like that it isn't necessarily identical to other restaurants so you are able to get a variety of flavors. The tacos, rice, and salsa were great. I was not fond about the beans however I feel like I'm picky when it comes to beans of any kind.

Yelp
I am so happy that Metairie is finnally getting fun Mexican restaurants. This place has the best decor! I think Tacos Del Cartel has equally fun decor. I highly recommend making a reservation because this place gets packed! The parking lot isn't huge but get there early and it isn' a problem. You walk in and it's like Disney's It's a Small World. I just loved being in the decorations puts me in a good mood. We ordered guac, tongue tacos, birria tacos, burrito, and a strawberry mint margarita. The margarita was not strong but it was very, berry, very tasty! I loved it! The Birria tacos and burrito were amazing, I am waiting to go back for those. And the guac was a little off for me. And as it was fun to try the tongue tacos, they were not my favorite either. The waiter was very professional, we even had someone come out and explain some of the dishes. So if you are looking for a different more upscale Mexican restaurant, this is it! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
My favorite Mexican style food spot in the city (or just outside). Service is friendly, food is fresh and delicious. I love the shrimp tacos and Burritos. Marguerite's have just the right spice and are well made. Recommend their specials any time!!

Yelp
I came here solo for my birthday last year. It was delicious, fun, and friendly. I felt welcomed, relaxed, and never rushed even though they were busy.

Yelp
Great food! Ordered carne asada tacos, mouth watering. Great service, very friendly. The entire atmosphere was awesome! I feel like you can order anything on the menu and enjoy it

Yelp
Been wanting to come here for a while as I read a magazine review for this restaurant highlighting its authenticity and amazing flavors. As a San Diego native, I have often found that Mexican food in New Orleans often means Tex-Mex, which is an entirely different category of cuisine. La Tia is the Mexican food that I ache for when missing home--cooked by someone's aunt but elevated in presentation. From tender lengua tacos and the aguachiles, to the flavorful beans and fluffy rice, my husband and I enjoyed it all. There are also vegan options available. I had THE BEST cauliflower tacos and even took a couple to go. If you're a drinker, try the Corazon Margarita, which is made with mezcal--sooo good! The carefully thought out decor creates a casual and creative ambiance that transports me back to Southern California, with an homage to lucha libre and Aztec wall. More importantly, the service was excellent. La Tia is easily one of our favorites!

Yelp
My husband and I went there for the first time for some chips, queso, and guacamole. The atmosphere was great, appetizers were delicious, and our waiter was very friendly and attentive! We mentioned that we are expecting our first child to our waiter, Les, and another friendly customer and so I couldn't take advantage of their happy hour. When we were ready to pay, our food was covered with a sweet little note congratulating us! Les wouldn't even accept a tip or tell us what happened/who paid for it just that it was taken care of. We want to say thank you so much for that gesture to whoever was kind enough to do so. We were planning on it anyway based on the service and food, but will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Do I love tacos? Yes. Do I love queso? Heck yes! Do I love margaritas? Double yes! So, I was super excited to try La Tia after hearing great things. We started with the queso and aguachile. Both were super super good. For my entree, I had three tacos - one fried fish, one fried cauliflower, and one mx. I didn't really like the mushroom one and found that there was a LOT of breading on the other two. Both the fried ones would have benefitted from a lot more lime or something extra. To drink, I had a jalapeno cucumber margarita, and it was just ok. It didn't taste very strong. Overall, I enjoyed my time here and the service was wonderful, but some of what I had was lackluster.

Yelp
Loved it. Had a really great experience here! Queso fundido- ate the whole thing by myself. Quesadilla, 10/10 with the chipotle sauce on it. Drinks, I mean it was all 10/10 in my own opinion. Came here with some co workers and they loved it also. The owner/chef was very kind and even came to our table to check on us :) I will absolutely be back. Looking forward to it!

Yelp
The food here was amazing! Tried their fish Ceviche and it was divine. Devoured the Cauliflower and Barria Tacos. Finished out the meal with the Chamorro dish! For dessert we also shared the Bizococho Tres Leches. The tres leches was different than I've ever had but it was light and delicious. Additionally the atmosphere in here is so cool! Very modern and a fun environment to experience such delicious food. Side note... My dogs loved that left over Chamorro bone!

Denise S.

Yelp
I don't know why we don't go to La Tia more often, except that it's way out in Metry. We made it there tonight and everything was excellent: Tamal with crispy pork belly, ceviche, fish tacos, and asada taco. Excellent, I say!! The decor is fun, the tables and chairs are utilitarian. But you're going for the food, which I have to repeat is excellent.

Russell R.

Yelp
We lousy so happened to stop at this place and were very glad we did. The tamal and short rib were two of the most memorable dishes I have had in a while. The service was friendly and efficient, and the drinks were well mixed. We are already planning to come back next week!

Alexandra M.

Yelp
drinks and food are spectacular. the vibe is great and service is better. will definitely be back!

Barry T.

Yelp
There is nothing to dislike about this place. Food is excellent. Waitstaff is very accommodating and the short rib is a must

Patty E.

Yelp
The food was great-freshly cooked with high quality ingredients-delicious! The cocktails were made from fresh ingredients-no premade mixes. The waitstaff was great!

Yelp
I'm on the fence about this place! Location was nice. We had a company dinner last week. For the drinks, I had the Jalapeño Margarita. It was good but nothing out of this world. For appetizers, I tried the queso dip, guacamole, and aguachile. The queso dip was really good. The chips were a little too thin. The guacamole was watery and not that great. Some people said the aguachile was too raw. Not sure how it's usually served but it was tasty. For my meal, I had the Al Pastor Tacos. It came with rice and beans which were really good. The tacos itself were super flavorful but they were not authentic al pastor tacos. For the service, the waiter was attentive but I did not like that when he took our food order, he wouldn't come to our side. We had to tell our order loudly at him across the table.
google avatar

Yelp
Delish!! Second time here. I had al pastor tacos. They were the best I have ever had. Hubby had Mexicali shrimp and loved them tho the fried rice wasn't his favorite. The Cadillac margaritas were smooth and awesome. Azteca soup was excellent. This is authentic Mexican food -NOT TexMex. Great place!
google avatar

Sharon L.

Yelp
Food is horrible. Food was served absolutely burnt Sent it back twice. All burnt.everytime. manager keeps telling me it is cheese. Bull crap. I never have asked anyone to take anything off the bill. I had way more time than enough to pay for my bill.
google avatar

Bruce N.

Yelp
First time here, colorful, nice bar and ambiance! Service was great. Food was way above traditional texmex. Avocado, ceviche, steak tacos, shrimp fajitas!! Really good!! We will be back!
google avatar

Shaula L.

Yelp
I love this place! The food is fantastic. There is a little for everyone. From basics that you will expect to the different, new and unexpected. This makes this restaurant one of my new favorite ones. We have been here several times and the food never disappoints. I specially love the brontosaurus ribs..., yum!!! More than enough for two. Their tacos are great all of them and their mole dumplings are surprisingly good. My least favorite was the red fish ceviche and the agua Chile was a little bland for my taste. But, all and all great place, nice service, good people and great food.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
Came here on a random whim and I was not disappointed at all! I ordered the pork belly tamale, carnitas dumplings, and four different tacos from left to right: (Quesa-birria, mix (vegetarian), bajon (shrimp), and suadero (confit brisket). As pretty as the tacos look, it tasted wonderful! All the appetizers and tackos tasted wonderful! I'll definitely be coming back here if I'm in town again! Ps: our waiter Guss was so helpful and awesome for giving us a golden food experience. Thank you!
google avatar

Leslie K.

Yelp
Best Mexican food ever! The mole' is so good you could but on a shoe and it would taste good! The pork belly tamale and carnitas dumplings for appetizers were on point as are any of the main entrees. For dessert, their version of tres leches was different in a great way. They pan sear it to make the outside crispy! Yum! The staff is friendly, prompt and informative. Will be back because there is so much more to try!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Holy guacamole!!! The food was excellent, as well as the ambiance and staff. I had the house made molè which was extraordinary! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

KC C.

Yelp
Chef inspired restaurant with outstanding food! I spoke with the chef/owner who was personal and came by asking for feedback. Decor - Fun and Festive, nicely done Drinks - great Cadillac Margarita! Loved the bar setup. Food - Great flavor profile. This is not TexMex. This is Mexican done well above average, so go with the mindset that you will experience and appreciate flavors most have not experienced at the "Mexican" restaurants in the area Hats off to Greece and his team. I hope they do well! Go out and support them!

google avatar

Daina B.

Yelp
The owners came by to meet us, which was very nice. My friend and I were there for cocktails after work and drinks were excellent. We look forward to coming back for dinner one evening.

Yelp
Went in tonight on a whim and was not disappointed. I had the suadero tacos sans cilantro (dang genetics), and they were absolutely delicious. I could have inhaled 10 more of those. The flavors blended together perfectly. My wife had the flautas with chicken and enjoyed them as well. Our waiter Victor was very warm and welcoming. We definitely will be back to try more of the taco selection.

Yelp
Im so excited about this restaurant! We went last night and we it was delicious! The kids enjoyed the food as well! The margaritas were super! I really hope this restaurant lasts forever. The restaurant was super busy for a Wednesday. The staff was really nice and very helpful! Best of luck to La Tia! Yea

Daphne D.

Yelp
Cute place but horrible service, greasy food and watery tea!!!!! Will not be back!!!!
google avatar

Rickie K.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly and the margaritas are the best and so was the food. Can't wait to go back.

Aaronlyn B.

Yelp
Love love love this place! The staff are amazing! The food is bomb and don't let me get started on the drinks! I love the decor, it brings back memories of when I visited Mexico City last summer. If you are looking for somewhere to host your next event, please do it here. My friends surprised me with a bridal shower and let me tell y'all.... the team at La Tia were on it! The drinks were constantly flowing and the food came out hot and ready all at the same time. We had an amazing experience with top tier customer service. Thank you so much for making my bridal shower so much more special. Y'all are the best! And make sure y'all tip my favorite bartender.

Janie W.

Yelp
I visit no less than once a week . Love the food, drinks , as well as the personal service. I have been coming since they opened the doors . They make feel like part of the family . Everything is great . I can't tell you what is my favorite because I would name everything.
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
Most excellent. Joshua, our server, was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean, and I loved the vibe of the place. The food came out quickly and it was delicious! I Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jena S.

Yelp
I was kinda like yea right this place isn't gonna impress me ! But it did! I really enjoyed their rice me and my mother In law ! I kinda wanna go back just to get that alone and maybe also try the queso bc I had some cheese with my fajitas and it was really good , the flautas were really good the meat was pork I think , also the chips and salsa they give before u order had a red and a green salsa which were both diff and very favorable . The only thing was I asked for a skinny cilantro jalapeño and they acted like they were doing a hard thing putting cilantro in my already on the menu jalapeño margarita lol well it was amazing so they need to add to the menu !!

Amy F.

Yelp
Amazing food and amazing staff! Everything is from scratch! Don't sleep on this! Even the margarita mixes are made in house!
google avatar

Shane H.

Yelp
I could write a pretty long winded review of our spectacular experience at La Tia, but instead I'll just say that the food was incredible and the service was impeccable. Probably the best dining experience I've had in recent memory. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Molly O.

Yelp
The food was only out down by the service. Authentic and fresh, definitely our New Mexican spot!! DELICIOUS!

Lisa P.

Yelp
Awesome food, service & very clean. I highly recommend trying this place. Our waiter Jacob was amazing. Always friendly & helpful with drinks & the menu.

jeremy m.

Yelp
By far a hidden gem. Customer service is out of this world. The food is crazy good amazing flavors and freshness. Hands down the best mexican food around. The atmosphere is super nice too so magical.

Christie D.

Yelp
Delicious food and drinks and such a fun atmosphere. The margaritas are absolutely exceptional. The salsa that comes out with the chips must be mentioned because it is so fresh and delicious, by far the best around. For appetizers you have to try the carnitas dumplings and the flautas. Both are amazing! My favorite tacos on the menu are the Pastor. But, we've also ordered the birria, carnitas and chicken tacos on other visits and we've never been disappointed. For something sweet to finish the meal try the Jericalla. Everything is so flavorful and the service is impeccable. Another thing to mention is that my family and I dined here for Mother's Day and they were giving out roses and a complimentary glass of champagne to all the moms. So thoughtful and sweet! La Tia has quickly become one of our top spots!
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Very delicios. I have the morita shrimp and it was some of the best food i've ever had.

Yelp
Went tonight for the first time and was not disappointed! The food and the service were some of the best we had and we can't wait to go back and try more! Truly one of the best restaurants in Metairie!
