If I could give this intimate, romantic old-style restaurant ten stars, I would. And I know. Actually, I don't want you to come and make the pace more famous that it is; I want it to remain a secret, at least from hoards of tourists! I've been coming here for 43 years, about ten years after it became an institution on Mission Street. An opera restaurant in the Mission? You bet your bippy! Ask John the owner-chef or his wife or daughter who help with serving, for a summary of the fascinating, complex history of this classic place. Unless they are jam packed esp. on the weekend, they will likely tell you. I swear about half his clientele are repeat customers like my partner and I. It's had its share of misfortunes from the death of the original owner Zef to the surprising new owner from Albania, Zef's newpher who was then a law student, to going by one evening to find it boarded up from a fire that gutted and destroyed hundreds of photos of famous opera singers who have dined there. I think the story goes that every one of them came back to deliver and dine again, or mailed John replacement photos and he took care to hang them in their honored original places. Only two pictures on the walls are not of opera singers, so ask who they are. And try these gustatory miracles: the hot baked bread they put down on the table to strike their first blow, an appetizer of white cream sauced tortellini to die for, any pasta, shrimp, or veal on the menu, and the coup de grace of their tiramisou large enough to share - the best I've had in my 81 years of life (or since coming there the first time in 1972). Believe, me, you will soon be back! (But don't tell too many of your friends, please!)
